To provide information on invasive species Production of teaching material for middle school Johanna Nordling
Invasive alien species have increased significantly over the last century, due to globalization and increasing travel, and today it is considered the second biggest threat to biodiversity in the world. One of the earliest and most important preventive measures is to inform about the problems caused by invasive alien species and how they can affect both ecosystems and our societies. Unfortunately today very few people have much knowledge about invasive alien species. The aim of this study was to investigate how information on invasive species and its problems is delivered today, both in and outside of Sweden, with emphasis on secondary schools in the municipality of Örnsköldsvik, and to develop a working material that can be used in teaching. To find out how the education situation looks like today in the schools, a questionnaire was sent out to seven secondary schools. The result showed that they did not have any teaching about it. There is not much information in Sweden about invasive alien species, probably because there are relatively few of them in the country, and those who do exist are so far giving relatively small problems. In countries outside of Sweden the problems of invasive alien species are bigger and the teaching, which has been more developed, is more important.
