Abstract [en]

The aim with this report is to investigate which kind of trees that can be used in dust and wind reducing purposes at the LKAB iron ore mine in Kiruna. The issues being investigated is which establishment areas are best suited, which is the best way to plant the trees, which are the best fitted type of tree, which conditions do these tree require and what is the cost. During the process of the report literature studies, interpretation of maps and visits at the industrial area has been carried out. Professionals in the field of study both internally at LKAB and externally have been questioned through mail and telephone. Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L.), birch (Betula pubescens ssp. tortuosa), contorta pine (Pinus contorta) and sallow (Salix caprea) are the best fitted tree types. These trees suits the project well as they do not require any particular soil, grow on nutrient-poor soil, are adapted to short vegetation periods, are relatively shrubby and intercept dust on different levels above ground. If conifers are used, it improves the protection during the winter as they keep their fir needles opposed to the deciduous forest.
