Abstract [sv]

Do we choose careers or do they choose us? Questions about career choices, transitions, and social inclusion av Dr Helen Colley.

Abstract [en]

We have with this study researched how facrtors such as gender, class and ethnicity affect the choice of Upper Secondary School, and also what is to be expected from a student counselor. The study is based on telephone interviews with three student counselors that work on different primary schools. As method we make use of the qualitative method, where we with the telephone interviews have hained a deeper insight and have been able to ask follow-up questions regarding our subject. We have chosen to use a subjective selection regarding the interviews. As base during the interviews we have been using an interview guide. The theoretical starting points that the analysis is based on is The careership theory by Hodkinson and Sparkes and Do we choose careers or do they choose us? Questions about career choices, transitions, and social inclusion by Dr Helen Colley. The three telephone interviews that we had with the student counselors describes that factors such as gender, class and ethnicity affext the student choice on which Upper Secondery School they will choose. The result is confirmed from earlier research and theories.
