The experience of living with a transplanted organ (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract

Background: Organ transplantation is a lifesaving treatment for patients with severe organ failure and waiting time can be long and painful. The new organ brings big changes in life and can cause long recovery periods.

Aim: The aim of this literature review was to illuminate the experiences with persons who have undergone an organ transplantation and replaced a heart, lung, liver or kidney.

Method: This literature review reviews 11 qualitative studies through content analysis. Articles were searched in the CINAHL, PsychINFO and Ebsco collected databases.

Results: Three categories developed from the result: “To be given a second chance to live”, “A multitude of feelings concerning being given a new organ” and “Limitations in the new life”. Nine subcategories developed from these.

Conclusion: To be given a new organ is an experience that causes a multitude of emotions and means that life will change forever. The new organ gives rise to a new life for the patients but this life also entail limitations. Nurses should be aware of the complicated situation that patients face to be able to provide good and safe care tailored to the transplanted patient.
