Women's reflections in connection with mammography A qualitative study (English)
Abstract [en]

Abstract

Background: In the administrative division of Västerbotten women between the ages of 40 and 74 are offered regular mammography checkups. Mammography is a medical inspection that many women proceed through with both anxiety and gratitude. During these inspections the relationships and meetings taking place between the nursing staff and the patient are fundamental. Women’s reflections during mammography checkups are essential for X-ray nurse’s to understand in their further development.

Aim: To describe women’s reflections during mammography checkups.

Method: Semistructured individual interviews were conducted with eleven female patients. All collected data has been analyzed using a qualitative content analysis technique.

Result: The analysis has resulted in three categories: Will be professionally treated, Mammography evokes feelings of anxiety and stress and Privilege to get mammography.

Conclusion: Female patients reflections during mammography checkups are generally positive. The patients appreciate empathic and present X-ray nurse’s that regard their wishes. The need for further information about mammography is not always met satisfactorily, and the long responding time subsequent to the checkup negatively affects the female patients reflections in relation to mammography.
