Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to show and discuss the differences between The  Regula Benedicti monastic rule in theory and it`s practice with regards to the Cistercians monastery ownership of property. In this paper a difference between the ideals or principles of the monasteries and the reality of the following of these ideals is established. A qualitative and comparative method is used to establish the differences between Regula Benedicti and its rules regarding ownership and the Cistercians monastery ownership in practice. Regarding the medieval charters used in the study, a quantitative method is used. The source – materials consists of medieval charters (diplomas), mainly in the forms of wills (testaments) and The Regula Benedicti monastic rule. In earlier Scholarships the Cistercian monasteries and the monasteries ownership has been discussed and explained mainly with regards to real property ownerships such as land. The economical transactions and activities regarding the Cistercians have also been discussed. This paper focuses on the ownerships of property and establishes a difference between ideals and reality or practice by the medieval Cistercian monasteries regarding the ownership and ideals of poverty (established as important in The Regula Benedicti rule). The results of this study show that it is the property donated to the monasteries as a hole that is dominating and commonly occurring in the Swedish Cistercian monasteries in the study with regards to the testaments. The donations (from the testaments) of estate directed to individuals in the monasteries are particularly seen in examples from Alvastra and Nydala monasteries. The results also shows that the existing rules regarding ownership as followed by the Cistercian monasteries is not followed mainly regarding to the donating of property to individuals in the monasteries (monks or nuns). Keywords: donations, testaments, will, Cistercians, charters, diplomas, medieval Swedish monasteries, property, ideals, reality, practice
