Civic orientation: path to successful integration? : A qualitative study on communication between newcomers and stuff on civic orienteration in Umeå (English)
Abstract [en]

The author examines the norms and values that are communicated on civiv orientation (Samhällsorientering) in Umeå and how staff and newcomers feel that comunication works. The theoretical framework constits of: the concept of power, hegemony, codes and conventions, the concept of culture and intercultural communication. The study relies on three methods: interviews, participant observation and text analysis. The result shows that communicators and newcomers believe that communication works fine except when the terms used don’t exist in their languages. Cultural differences also constitutes a communication barrier because newcomers perceive things differently than here in Sweden. The communicators think that lack of time is also a problem. When it comes to norms and values communicated, Sweden is presented as a democratic country where e.g. men and women are equal and people accepted regardless of gender, ethnicity or origins. But information that contradicts it is also found.
