Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Palliative care is directed to both the patient and next of kin by responding to both their needs. Being a relative of a person in the end of life can mean both mental and physical stress. Relatives express a desire to maintain some form of control in the otherwise chaotic and uncertain everyday life. Aim: The aim of this study was to illuminate the experiences of being a relative of a person in the end of life. Method: A qualitative literature review based on twelve scientific articles were reviewed, analyzed and compiled. Results: The study resulted in three main categories; A changed life situation, to be in a vulnerable position and getting personal needs met. Relatives custom everyday life for the dying person. Powerlessness, inadequacy, guilt, shame, loneliness, anxiety, fatigue and exhaustion were central emotions in relatives' lives. To cope with the complex situation it was important to receive support and information from health care professionals. Conclusion: Family-focused care is important to encourage both patients and relatives health. It is important as a nurse to pay attention to relatives' needs, support them in their role and strengthening their sense of coherence.
