Classification of pp-waves in General Relativity

Abstract [en]

First we give an introduction to the mathematical theory needed for Einstein’s theory of gravity. The equivalence problem is to determine whether or not two metrics of spacetimes describes the same geometry, which is defined and then solved. We give a short introduction to the theory of spinors and its application to Petrov classification. As an application of the classification procedure presented, the metric for gravitational pp-waves is classified. Gravitational pp-waves are a class of metrics which solves Einstein’s equation exactly which also possess the similarities of wave structure found via linearised theory.
