Is Swedish education about natural disasters a disaster?: ICT as a tool for increasing awareness of natural hazards

Abstract [en]

This degree project has two aims – to compare the secondary school curricula and syllabusesof Sweden and California for references to natural hazards, and to test the OIKOS WebApplications as a tool for increasing the pupils´knowledge of natural hazards. Most of thework was carried out in 2007. Not surprisingly, the Californian syllabuses were rich in goalsconnected to natural hazards, while the Swedish syllabuses did not mention them at all. TheSwedish syllabuses based on the new curricula Lgr 11 and LGY 11 do, however, containgoals related to natural hazards. The OIKOS web site was tested in a class of eleven-graders,who very much appreciated the session and what they had learned from it. Clearly, thiswebsite is well suited for its purpose of increasing awareness of natural disasters, and canafter an initial teacher-guided session be used for self studies.

Detta examensarbete har två mål – att jämföra svenska högstadiets och gymnasiets läro- ochkursplaner med kaliforniska dito med avseende på hur naturkatastrofer tas upp, samt att testaOIKOS webapplikationer som ett verktyg för att öka elevers kunskaper om naturkatastrofer.Det mesta av arbetet utfördes 2007. Föga förvånande hade Kaliforniens läroplaner många målknutna till geovetenskapliga risker, medan de inte alls omnämndes i de svenska läro- ochkursplanerna. Kursplanerna baserade på de nya svenska läroplanerna Lgr 11 och Lgy 11innehåller dock mål knutna till geovetenskapliga risker. OIKOS webapplikationer testades ien andraklass på gymnasiet, och eleverna visade stor uppskattning av siten och vad de lärt sigunder lektionen. Helt klart är denna website lämpad för att öka medvetenheten omnaturkatastrofer, och kan efter en inledande lärarledd lektion användas för självstudier.
