Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to describe children’s experience of domestic violence and their experience of group therapy. The method has been qualitative consisting of eight interviews with children having experienced both domestic violence and group therapy and who were 7-8 years old at the time of group participation. The focus of the study has been on a specific and distinct phenomenon and my purpose has not been to make it generalizable. The central issues have been related to how children experience domestic violence and the help they are offered. The results have been interpreted through concepts such as psychotherapy, trauma, mentalization and attachment theory. The results have shown that the group has functioned as a a therapeutic alliance where the children have been able to explore their internal mental issues. This alliance provided a holding function for the children and in the play area that developed they hade the possibility to explore their internal, as well as their external reality. Also, the results have shown that participation in the group gave the children a sense of belonging and security as well as the opportunity to talk about and process the violence.
