The relationship between movement control tests and physical capacityand flexibility, lifestyle and health

This study investigates whether physical capacity and flexibility, lifestyle and healthin adolescence, young adulthood and middle age are related to movement control in thelumbopelvic region. In 1974 muscular endurance and strength were measured inrandomly selected 16-year old students. In 1992 they were followed up with the sametests and questionnaires about lifestyle and health. In 2010 the second follow-up wassupplemented with two tests of movement control – flexion control (standing Waiter’sbow) and extension control (supine double leg lower test).Significantly more women than men performed the Waiter’s bow correctly. About25 percent of the men and 33 percent of the women performed the supine double leglower test correctly.Among women extension control, and among men both flexion and extensioncontrol were associated with a higher physical capacity, but the association withphysical activity were contradictory. Among men a higher BMI and wider waistcircumference was associated to supine extension control, while smoking wasnegatively associated to flexion control.In middle-aged men and women, movement control was not associated with health,including low back pain, but with physical capacity and somewhat lifestyle, althoughthe performance varied with gender.
