Zuper-Zlatan och Kanon-Kalla : A qualitative and quantitative analysis of how Sportbladet portray Swedens two most beloved athletes as “sporting heroes” (English)
Abstract [en]

In this essay I have studied how the swedish newspaper Sportbladet is contributing to the construction of sporting heroes by examining their covering of two accomplishments by two of Swedens most beloved athletes: Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Charlotte Kalla. The theories that I applied were National Sporting Heroes, the media story of the sporting hero, framing, womens space in media and performance versus gender. I used two different methods: a qualitative text analysis to see how Sportbladet have used typical tools to make an athlete seem like a hero and a quantitative content analysis to see if there was any differences between how the man Ibrahimovic and the woman Kalla appear by counting the space they got and by counting certain words. The result of the qualitative text analysis shows that the journalists obviously makes the athletes seem like heroes through their way of writing about them, especially trough their own opinions expressed in columns. The quantitative content analysis shows that there were barely any differences regarding the space the athletes got but Charlotte Kallas gender were featured twice as much as Zlatan Ibrahimovics.
