Methods for teaching reading and reading comprehension : A study of reading instruction in grade 1 (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore and compare how three teachers work with literacy learning and reading comprehension in grade one. The data was collected through observations and interviews. The findings indicate that the observed teachers focus on Bottom-up methods while teaching reading. The teachers seemed to think that students first have to learn to read (decode) and linking sounds to letters before working with reading comprehension. All teachers preferred to work jointly through discussion and interaction to visualize reading strategies. The teacher’s chose methods mainly by the former teacher's direction.
