The aim with this study was to review and compare what input seven language teachers use in their teaching in two country contexts. The study was carried out in three different primary schools, two in Sweden and one in Australia. The second aim with this study was to investigate how students learn languages, both L1 and L2, according to research and policy documents. Another important part of this study was to find out what students believe is most beneficial for their learning concerning input during language lessons. The results of the study showed that students in Sweden prefer the use of games, videos, drama, songs, TPR and fictional books. The Australian students preferred pictures, storytelling, songs, the method Teaching Handwriting Reading And Spelling Skills and reading groups. The results from the observations showed which input and what activities the teachers used in their lessons. The Swedish teacher’s utilized workbooks, songs, speaking of the target language and reading aloud. Two differences between the school’s approaches were that the Australian teachers used songs and the Big book method in their L1 lessons whilst this didn’t occur in the Swedish classrooms. Another difference was the use of THRASS. There was no use of an equivalent pedagogical resource to the Australian THRASS in Sweden. Similarities between the countries where that the L2 teachers used the target language about everyday things like weather and for the L1 lessons both countries discussed the issue at hand through pictures and mind maps.
