Abstract [en]

This study focuses on examining how the use of public transport has developed between the urban area Hörnefors and the city of Umeå years 2006-2015. During this time a railway Botniabanan has been completed, which connects the two locations. This gives people in Hörnefors the opportunity to travel both by bus and train, instead of the car, that has been proved by other research to be the dominant mode of transport in Hörnefors. This study shows the conditions for bus and train service between Hörnefors and Umeå, which may be important for public transport planning in order to reduce car dependency in the long term.

 

The study is based on quantitative research where statistical data and a GIS network analysis have been used. The empirical work has been based on what other research found can motivate people to use public transport such as; accessibility, the number of trips offered, the time required.

 

The conclusion of the study is that the establishment Botniabanan between Hörnefors and Umeå contributed to improved opportunities for the traveler to be able to optimize their daily travel. Perhaps even reduced car dependency. The most interesting is that there has been no apparent change from bus to rail traffic. The study imply that the bus has a large role to play in public transport use between Hörnefors and Umeå. This study also showed that it is important to have comparable travel statistics over time, to measure the development of public transport, to make assumption if people tends to use more or less public transport over time, which can be of great value for transport planning.
