Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Extensive worry can cause clinical suffering such as anxiety- and depressive symptoms, which are reduced by physical activity. Worries about negative consequences of modern society, modern health worries (MHW), has not yet been studied in the context of anxiety-, depressive symptoms and physical activity in a longitudinal perspective. The purpose of this study was to investigate concurrent and predictive associations between MHW, anxiety- and depressive symptoms. Psychical activity was entered as a moderating factor. The data, stratified by sex and age, were gathered from the survey-based Västerbotten Environmental Health Study. The sample included 2306 individuals who responded at baseline and at three-year follow up. To analyse the data, hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used. The results showed that MHW are associated with and predicts anxiety- and depressive symptoms, and that physical activity has a moderating effect on these associations. The results also confirmed the opposite concurrent association between MHW and anxiety- but not with depressive symptoms. Neither anxiety- nor depressive symptoms were found to be predictors of MHW. Physical activity had no moderating effect on those associations. The explained variances for all significant associations were low. The results therefore can be useful for public health purposes, stand as an implication for future research and should to a lesser extent be used in a clinical context.
