Abstract [en]

This study examines the artists that art teachers choose to teach about and the reason behind it from a gender perspective. The study carried out consists of four interviews with four different art teachers working in secondary schools. The four informants' responses were compiled thematically linked to the study's purpose and issues to allow for comparisons and analysis. The analysis of the information served was based on a qualitative perspective. Based on feminist art theories, I have come to the conclusion that the individual artists used in art education is historic with classical or modernist character and is produced primarily by male artists, with few exceptions. There is an art historical canon in art education that excludes women artists. The study also shows how four informants perceive and relate to women artists in the context of secondary schools. It is also suggested that contemporary art is an absent element in art education in secondary schools. Finally, I have compared my own studies with the most recent evaluation of the art subject, the national evaluation of the art subject in compulsory school (Skolverket, 2015), which was carried out in 2013.
