Abstract [en]

One of the major issues following the rapidly growing proportion of elderly in the population is the high rates of depressive symptoms found in the elderly, and the socioeconomic and individual consequences it brings. As a part of the ongoing research project “Healthy Ageing Initiative”, the present study uses cluster analysis to group participants with regard to their functional performance level, in order to identify high risk groups for depression in a sample of 2,167 70-year olds living in Northern Sweden. The results show that individuals in the high-risk group are characterized by not fulfilling the WHO recommendations for physical activity (PA), as well as, overweight, type 2 diabetes and poor functional performance. The results emphasize the importance of maintaining a certain level of physical functionality, and the important role PA may play in preventing depression in late life.
