Abstract [en]

The study's purpose was to show the perceptions that exist encircling seven persons representing four golf clubs in Northern Sweden in terms of carrying out and managing activities for people with disabilities. In addition to this, the study also examined what requirements a golf club faces when trying to establish and incorporate sporting activities for people with disabilities. To answer these questions semi-structured interviews were conducted and the correspondents that stipulates as the main source in this study consisted of seven people that are highly engaged and involved in four different golf clubs within the geographical sphere of Northern Sweden. The results show that disability overall and sport activities for the incapacitated is a broad concept that has different meaning and implications among individuals. The result further implies that golf clubs mainly have a positive attitude towards pursuing sporting activities for people with disabilities, though golf clubs generally attain a limited opportunity to do so due to lack of resources in the form of: time, finances, lack of voluntary commitment and lack of coaches and leaders. There is seen to be an interest in terms of pursuing sporting activities and not least handicap golf among the disabled, though implications from this study signifies that the main challenge surrounds identifying participants and recruiting them to the golf clubs. Another obstacle that permeates this area is the intuition that there is seen to be a social barrier that exists between society and golf which concludes in the fact that golf is perceived and experienced to be a sport which is not suitable for everyone. The general perception merely concerning the disabled and their ability to interact in sporting activities is that this social barrier can be eliminated by continuously working with questions of equality. Conclusively, the assumptions portrayed is that this issue can be diminished and resolved within the future if acts towards equalities are continuously encouraged and implemented. In that way, the future for the disabled in terms of participating in sporting activities is seen to be bright.
