Abstract [en]

This study has examined the culture in Swedish ice hockey and the visibility, construction, impact and consequences that comes from it. Opportunities for change and improvement hasalso been an important part of the chosen subject. Sweden is considered to be one of thefrontrunners of ice hockey, both in the execution of the game, but also in the growth anddevelopment of the sport. Historically, ice hockey is a physically tough and masculine sport, whythe aim of this study was to research how this reflects on the cultural environment and thepeople in it. The study was based on qualitative data that was gathered from interviews withpeople currently active in ice hockey. These people all have different roles in the field, such as,for example, players, coaches, consultants or other types of organizational leaders. The resultsshowed that there is a distinct norm and idea on how players and other people in the sportshould act, talk and present themselves. This creates homogeneous groups where you easilystand out if you are slightly different. The result also implicates that society’s depiction of icehockey in many ways are different from what people working with the sport believes it to be,something that can obstruct the growth of the sport of ice hockey. This study will hopefully serveas a base in continued research about sports culture and more specific the culture of ice hockey.
