Abstract [en]

This study was carried out on behalf of Västerbotten Idrottsförbund and SISU Idrottsutbildarma. The aim with this study was to try to understand what influences adolescents to participate in sports association or not. This was done by describing and analyzing adolescent's attitudes to sports association activities and other forms of exercise. Data collection was done by a questionnaire, answered by 121 high school students. The results showed that the majority of students exercised four times a week or more, and that they had a positive attitude to exercising in general. The reasons for participate in sports associations compared with reasons to exercise outside sports associations differed a lot between the groups. The conclusion drawn from this was that young people choose form of exercise activities depending on what they find meaningful. For example, those who do not find competing meaningful choose not to participate in sport associations. This because activities in sports associations often involve competing and ranking. Sports associations need to adapt if they want to attract adolescents who do not find meaning in the sport's core logic of competition and focus on results.
