Abstract [en]

This study focuses on the online presence of three religious communions which adhere to the beliefs of modern Asatru and Forn Sed. The communions chosen for the study are Samfundet Forn Sed Sverige, Samfälligheten för Nordisk Sed and Nordiska Asa-samfundet. The aim of the study has been to identify in what way the three communions define their own beliefs and ideals, and who they seek to define themselves against, and which similarities and differences exist between them. The finds of the study reveals that all of the communions define themselves in accordance with modern democratic values, tolerance, and respect for other cultures and religions. They also seek to define themselves against common perceptions in society that practitioners of Asatru and Forn Sed are harboring values often found on the extreme right on the political spectrum. Furthermore, several differences and similarities are found in the beliefs of the communions. All three have some inspiration from the ancient Norse religion practiced during the Nordic Viking age, regarding gods as well as certain practices. While differences mostly stem in how they view the origins of their faith, as well as to what extent they believe in various supernatural beings, or if they believe solely in the ancient Norse deities.
