Previous research shows that in order to be able to multiply, in writing and mental arithmetic, it is necessary to have automated table skills up to the tenth table. The aim of this study was to investigate how the teaching of the multiplication tables in Swedish schools has changed from the 1970’s until today. In the study a document analysis was made of the curriculums Lgr69, Lgr80, Lpo94 and Lgr11. Ten teachers were also interviewed and a content analysis was made from their answers. The document analysis shows that table training in multiplication is explicitly formulated only in the knowledge requirements of Lgr69 and Lgr80. The interviews show that during the 1970’s and 1980’s the pupils were taught table training in multiplication. In the late 1980’s a period came, where the understanding of multiplication became more important than the automation of tables. The interviews also showed that since the latest curriculum was introduced, table training is once again included in the teaching of multiplication The didactic implications in this study shows that although the table training in multiplication is not explicitly stated in the knowledge requirements of the curriculum, the pupils need to be taught table training in multiplication in order to calculate multiplication, fractions and algebra.
