    Abstract [en]

    Nowadays, the Internet has dramatically changed the way people take the normal course of actions. By the recent growth of the Internet, connecting different objects to users through mobile phones and computers is no longer a dream. Aviation industry is one of the areas which have a strong potential to benefit from the Internet of Things. Among many problems related to air travel, delayed and lost luggage are the most common and irritating. Therefore, this paper suggests anew baggage control system, where users can simply track their baggage at the airport to avoid losing them. Attaching a particular pattern on the bag, which can be detected and localized from long distance by an ordinary camera, users are able to track their baggage. The proposed system is much cheaper than previous implementations and does not require sophisticated equipment.

    Abstract [en]

    Number of mobile devices such as mobile phones or PDAs has been dramatically increased over the recent years. New mobile devices are equipped with integrated cameras and large displays which make the interaction with device easier and more efficient. Although most of the previous works on interaction between humans and mobile devices are based on 2D touch-screen displays, camera-based interaction opens a new way to manipulate in 3D space behind the device in the camera's field of view. This paper suggests the use of particular patterns from local orientation of the image called Rotational Symmetries to detect and localize human gesture. Relative rotation and translation of human gesture between consecutive frames are estimated by means of extracting stable features. Consequently, this information can be used to facilitate the 3D manipulation of virtual objects in various applications in mobile devices.

    Sveriges Radio började sända radio i Sverige år 1925. 1957 genomfördes de första TV-sändningarna i Sverige av samma företag. Med åren kom företaget att delas i flera mindre delar och en av dessa var det nya företaget Sveriges Television som snabbt etablerade sig som Sveriges primära Tv-station.

    Genom åren har både radio och TV förändrats men även själva tittandet. Idag tittar väldigt många människor på TV via sina datorer eller mobiltelefoner. Detta gör att satsningarna på TV-program och deras hemsidor samt sociala medier blir allt viktigare.

    Efter att ha funnits sedan år 1980 skulle TV-programmet "Mitt i Naturen" inte sända någon vårsäsong år 2015. Det fanns en önskan om att fylla detta tomrum med en satsning på webben för att programmet skulle leva kvar på något sätt under vårmånaderna. Strategier lades fram och efter detta valdes några av dessa ut. Artiklar och små miniavsnitt skulle produceras varje vecka under vårmånaderna fram till sommaren. Publiceringar på Instagram och Facebook kom även att ingå i arbetet.

    Programmets huvudmålgrupp är barnfamiljer och här vill man få så stor räckvidd som möjligt genom satsningen. Efter arbetet kunde man summera att det i några fall gått väldigt bra för vissa artiklar som publicerats på hemsidan. Det som gett bäst genomslag var videoklippen på Facebook.

    Abstract [en]

    When face images are occluded it becomes difficult or impossible to make a correct recognition based on only the non-occluded parts. With asymmetrical Principal Component Analysis (aPCA) it is possible to estimate occluded regions based on the content of the non-occluded pixels. Entire faces can be reconstructed from images where some parts are occluded with the occluded region being estimated based on the relation to the non-occluded region. We show the result with 3 different occlusion cases and compare two reconstruction methods. The results are measured both objectively and subjectively and it is shown that a clear and sharp image part should be used even if the resulting image have edges in it.

    With developing technologies and growing infrastructures, connected experiences are expanding their realms towards various devices and scenarios in our lives. One of the areas, which is going under a big change due to this connectivity is the car related experiences. As connectivity is intrinsically enabler of different experiences and services, it is foreseen that it will bring a different dimension to car and driving related experiences as well.By investigating the future trends and possibilities that connectivity can provide to car and driving related experiences, this thesis aims for imagining the near future scenarios with an explorative approach, focusing on one and addressing to the rising issues with a design proposal that is meaningful to both users and the industry.The result, Tripcloud, contributes to the future scenario of having a road trip with the car, with a new digital platform that aims for supporting the users throughout the planning and bringing the plans into the car experience seamlessly and safely. It aims for reducing today’s existing complexity in terms of interaction and cognition to provide a better experience and avoid driver distraction. With providing organised information pieces, information exchange between people and automated links with mobile devices and car, Tripcloud offers easier an more convenient alternative for road trip planing and bringing the plans into car experiences for the near future.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis investigates the two gaming platforms PC and Console and how the interfaces of games on these platforms could be designed more efficiently making it easier to release games on multiple platforms. In other words, how could the Multiple Platform First method look. Little previous work exist on this problem so this thesis work gathers information from other industries and also research on user interfaces in games in general. By looking at games running on both platforms different best practises and common solutions were discovered. A study was conducted testing different in-game components on users. The components were selected to test if the users would accept non-traditional components since users detect when playing on an interface not intended for the platform. This makes the study very complicated since the "best" solution might not work if the users does not accept it for the intended platform. Concepts were designed to combine the testing of solutions with the users opinion of the solutions. The chosen concepts were researched both in literature and by looking at present implementations in games. To be able to user test the solutions they were iterated from low fidelity prototypes on paper to high fidelity prototypes that were playable in Unity. The prototypes were tested on users and data gathered through Think Aloud comments and questionnaire answers. This study presents a first draft of how a multiple platform approach can be achieved.

    Abstract [en]

    The study about communication between subcontractor and design-and-build contractor are accomplished at Östervångskolan in Lund. The purpose with this study is to get a better understanding about how the communication works between the contractors today, find out which interferences and misunderstandings that influence the communication and which ways of communication that is being used at the working establishment. The building and development meetings are also being observed and analyzed at the working establishment. To examine how the contractors at Östervångskolan considered the communication today the method of qualitative interviews will be accomplished. These interviews generated a result, which was analyzed. The conclusion of this study is that the communication works fine but there’s a lot of deficits to rectify. One of the deficits that appeared was that the meeting protocol could be improved. A solution to this was to introduce a white board where the sub-contractors can write suggestions or thoughts. These will be processed by the supervisor and brought up at the weekly meeting to get a better participation in meetings. In the category “slutsats” more actions that will minimize the deficits in communication are described.

    Abstract [en]

    Tourism is an important force for sustainable development in many countries. It provides millions of jobs which, for some countries, entails an increased gross domestic product (GDP). Unfortunately, there are downsides of tourism as well, and work towards sustainable tourism is now a key feature of many travel organizations. To influence consumers into more sustainable behavior, organizations can use nudging as a tool. A nudge uses a specific psychological effect to guide individuals towards a predefined choice. Since many travel companies provide their products through digital environments, such as websites or apps, knowledge of digital nudging is mandatory. The aim of this study was to investigate how digital nudging could be used to encourage more sustainable decisions on a travel company website. How the digital nudges should be designed, and how digital nudging would be perceived by consumers were investigated. The use of existing guidelines for how to design digital nudges resulted in prototypes of a travel company's website including several digital nudges. The guidelines included four steps: define the goal, understand the users, design the nudge and test the nudge. The result showed several digital nudges that after some design improvements have the potential to influence consumers to make more sustainable decisions on a travel company's website. The result also showed that the majority of the consumers had a positive attitude towards digital nudging in this context, although this needs to be further evaluated. Further research is also recommended to assess which nudge that works best for a given choice situation.

    Abstract [en]

    Humans were made to move. Many hours in front of a screen leads to stiff bodies and a diminished bodily awareness. The aim of this project was to explore how technology can serve to increase our body awareness and adapt to our physical conditions in everyday life with focus on office spaces.

    The study is explorative with a user-centered approach and a focus on embodied prototyping, where the user is a subject of design. Data was collected with recordings, interviews, and workshops. Reflexion-on-action, prototyping and iterations lead to the final outcome.

    The final concept is a wearable that encourage people to move and stretch out more often and spontaneously throughout the day. It does so by vibration patterns along your spine and shoulders.

    The idea of this concepts is to make people move often and regularly during the day; to react spontaneously to a reminder from the body, mediated by the vibrations. The system is thought to be self-awarding; if it feels good to stretch out, to extend the arms, to move – then you will want to do it again.

    Abstract [en]

    The media landscape is changing and Internet-based streaming services for children are becoming increasingly popular. The concept of online streaming extends freedom and control over content selection but discovering new content is often experienced as troublesome. The objective of this thesis is to identify parameters to make it easier for users of streaming services for children to discover and watch unfamiliar programs. Guidelines are formed based on literature studies, interviews, observations, a survey, a benchmark, data analysis with Adobe Analytics, a workshop and finally user tests with prototypes. These guidelines conclude that content should be categorized, dynamicized, highlighted and socially engaging. Categorization based on age is primarily important but interests and genres can also be used to make children more interested in a title. Content should be dynamic, customizable and personal to each user to give more accurate recommendations based on age and interests. Making one alternative more visually prominent will make this alternative more interesting especially for younger children and social features with information about other users opinions can motivate a decision to discover new content among older children.

    High pressures are often measured using the resistance of Manganin wires. However, the pressure coefficient of resistance is known to depend on temperature. We have measured this temperature dependence by comparing the output from a Manganin gauge with that of a well calibrated Zeranin gauge and determined a correction factor which enables us to measure the pressure at any temperature between 150 and 300 K with a temperature dependent error well below 0.5%.

    Abstract [en]

    At the University Hospital of Umeå, NUS, a new radiation treatment department is being built. The purpose of this master thesis is to evaluate the actual radiation protection outside three out of five treatment rooms in the building, including two Varian and one Siemens accelerator, and to verify that the radiation limits for the staff and the general public, stated by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, are obeyed.

    The evaluation of the radiation protection shielding is made through measurements. The nominal photon beam energies 6 and 15 MV (dose rates up to 500 MU/min) can be used, which means that both photons and neutrons will contribute to the effective dose. For the photon measurements, two different GM counters have been used and for the neutron measurements a Neutron detector with a polyethylene moderator and a 3He recoil proton counter tube was applied. The thesis also includes a literature study of the photon and neutron energy spectra outside the treatment rooms in order to check that the measurement equipments are suitable to use.

    The measured doses of the radiation shielding are below the radiation limits per week and year but the measurements indicate too high values per hour, i.e. momentary dose rate, at the height of isocenter of the primary walls and at the gap under the door for all three accelerators. The rooms with the Varian accelerators also show too high values per hour at the secondary wall where the door is attached. However, the limiting value per hour is only a recommendation and no extra reinforcement in therefore required. Nevertheless, one should avoid placing a workplace, for example a writing desk, close to the secondary and primary walls.

    Abstract [en]

    This dissertation describes the theory behind a specific solution for balcony attachment for concrete constructions designed by Prefabmästarna. The purpose is to get a deeper understanding of design according to Eurocode and EKS (Swedish application of eurocode) and to optimize the current solution for balcony attachment in view of reduced material usage. The design is based on a prefabricated balcony slab is fasten to a T-section whose flanges are molded in a prefabricated DFS-slab. Two tie-rods is threaded into the balcony slab and fasten to the T-section with a washer. After mounting of the balcony slab the DFS slab is molded on which stabilizes the T-section from instabilites. The results show that the structure is largely optimized but that there are room for improvements in specific places. For balconies with a length of 2.0 meters the T-section can be reduced with 10 kg of steel, which corresponds to more than 50 % of the T-section weight compared with the reference solution. Also at the 2.5 meter balconies the T-section can be reduced with 7 kg of steel, which corresponds to a 38 % reduction in material use compared with the reference solution. A common standard for the T-section is possible for balconies with a length of 2.0 and 2.5 meters.

    Abstract (EN)

    This paper is the final part of the Media Producer Program at Umeå University, including a supplementary year. This essay is a Bachelor thesis in media technology.

    The purpose of this was to deepen my knowledge and extend my skills in graphic design, especially for printing. The goal was to find an answer to the question "what is the significance of typography in the analog format?". Another purpose was to test the hypothesis "it is harder to read text written in a different color than black on a white/light background".

    This thesis are for those who are interested in typography and its importance. The thesis also refer to the history about typography, the structure and basic rules. It also presents a survey of its significance in the analog format. Not a statistical survey, but an empirical study that captures a bunch of opinions and values ​​about the use of typography.

    The results of the survey are presented with texts and tables, and it shows a disagreement to what the literature says. The result shows that people read text written with sans-serifs rather than text written with serifs. It also shows that people doesn’t thinks it’s harder to read text written with other colors than black on light backgrounds.

     

    The result of the side project appears with texts and pictures, so you  can get an overview about the layout and how the results of the study, and the theory, are implicated.

    In the essay I have also looked at scientific articles. You can read about that in the discussion section, where you also find suggestions to further studies and research in typography, as well as thoughts on the work in its entirety.

    Many studies looked at mobile information needs of users and how to support those needs in the mobile platform and the challenges it holds. In this study I tried to take a different approach in arguing that the uses of the services available on the stationary set up are used with different motivations and goals on the various mobile platform context and therefore designing the mobile versions of those require careful considerations of that. I present the results of a study conducted to investigate how the use of Facebook mobile differ over the stationary and mobile platform and use that as an example to elaborate on the design considerations of similar services.

    Abstract [en]

    Brain-computer interface (BCI) systems can provide people with ability to communicate and control real world systems using neural activities. Therefore, it makes sense to develop an assistive framework for command and control of a future robotic system which can assist the human robot collaboration. In this paper, we have employed electroencephalographic (EEG) signals recorded by electrodes placed over the scalp. The human-hand movement based motor imagery mentalization is used to collect brain signals over the motor cortex area. The collected µ-wave (8–13 Hz) EEG signals were analyzed with event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS) quantification to extract a threshold between hand grip and release movement and this information can be used to control forestry crane grasping and release functionality. The experiment was performed with four healthy persons to demonstrate the proof-of concept BCI system. From this study, it is demonstrated that the proposed method has potential to assist the manual operation of crane operators performing advanced task with heavy cognitive work load.

    Abstract [en]

    What transportation means corporations choose for satisfying their mobility needs may have an essential impact on the environment. Choosing environmental friendly, alternatives such as battery driven light electric vehicles, would mean drastically contributing to a more sustainable environment. Meanwhile as carsharing solutions, continuously rise in popularity together with other sharing economy business models so do their possibilities to satisfy the mobility needs for corporations either by them implementing their own carsharing service or by investing on external services offered by established carsharing operators. This thesis has investigated and designed for a Zbee based corporate carsharing service, to be used between the affiliates of Vinngroup in Gothenburg. A Zbee is a light electric three-wheeled vehicle. Based on user-centred service design methods, methods suggested for sharing economy solutions, as well as user experience design methods, this thesis identified that users have different individualistic needs in a workplace and prior experiences that affects how they will use the service.In order to satisfy these different needs, it was found, the system needs to provide real-time vehicle and scheduling information for ensuring the users vehicle availability and service reliability, being one of the first requirement from the users. Further the service should provide users with functions that help users through the different use phases that were identified during this work. The findings found were then presented visually by designing mobile application prototypes and testing them on participants iteratively. The final set of prototypes was further evaluated by using the System Usability Scale, an effective and popular tool for measuring the usability of products and services. This evaluation gave the scores 77.5, 92.5, 90, 87.5 and 72.5, thus this giving a mean-value of 84 and a median of 87.5. All these scores suggests the prototype has high usability.

    Abstract [en]

    Engine components are exposed to vibrations which may lead to fatigue damage. Accurate dynamic simulations are necessary especially during the development process, in order to find a satisfactory component.

    Currently Scania uses a standard method for dynamic calculations that is based on a frequency response approach. A measured or calculated excitation yields a certain response through the transfer function of the system. The transfer function is obtained through an eigenfrequency calculation and an experience-based estimate of the modal damping. An obvious drawback of this method is that the estimated modal damping strongly affects the calculated response of the system.

    In this thesis, the method outlined above is compared to an alternative, so-called, inverse method in which the excitation of the system is calculated using a measured response. The advantage is that the modal damping does not affect the result directly since the excitation has been adjusted according to the response. As a demonstration object a charge air pipe and its bracket are used. Acceleration response data is collected from an engine vibration measurement.

    The calculated safety factor of the demonstration object is reasonable for both the standard method and the inverse method. An estimate of the quality of the model is obtained for the inverse method through statistical measures, which is not the case for the standard method. The excitation for the inverse method is adjusted to the estimated modal damping which is a major advantage since damping is notoriously difficult to quantify in engineering practice. The inverse method has proven to be a useful simulation method for calculations when a prototype of the engine component of interest already exists.

    With a digital screen a company can provide a simple way to inform its employees and visitors about what is going on at the oce. The company KnowitAB wished to be able to display upcoming events through such a digital screen.This thesis describes how a solution was designed and implemented to suit the needs of the company.By using the design process a web based solution was built able to display events retrieved from the company's Exchange server on a digital screen. The solution was also built as a web site, making it accessible from outside the office so that employees can look up information on the go. The resulting solution is going to be installed in Knowit's office in Umeå, with a future vision of installing it in several other Knowit offices.

    Det finns i dagsläget ett stort antal bostadshus som inte har någon värmåtervinning i ventilationssystemet. För att uppnå energiförbrukningsmålen till 2020 och 2050 är ett alternativ att sätta in värmeåtervinningsbatterier i frånluftskanaler som ansluts till en värmepump.

    Syftet med detta projekt har varit att undersöka hur energiförbrukning och årlig kostnad påverkas av temperaturer från värmeåtervinningsbatteri. Parametrarna som har undersökts är normala variationer av  Frånluftstemperatur, Fukthalt i frånluft, Frånluftsflöde genom batteri resp. Vätskeflöde genom batteri.

    Utöver detta har även totalvärmefaktorn för anläggningen undersökts beroende på om det är en varvtalsreglerad värmepump som används jämfört med en värmepump med steg samt hur totalvärmefaktorn har påverkats när solfångare ansluts till systemet.

    Vid beräkningar och simuleringar har två värmeåtervinningsbatterier undersökts, ett traditionellt batteri från Luvata och ett nålrörsbatteri från Retermia. De två värmepumparna som har undersökts är en fastighetsvärmepump från IVT och en industrivärmepump med varvtalsreglering från Kylma. Dessa beräkningar och simuleringar har utförts i programmet Coils och Microsoft Excel.

    De fall som har undersökts är:Fall 1: Luvata-batteri anslutet till Kylma-värmepumpFall 2: Retermia-batteri anslutet till Kylma-värmepumpFall 3: Luvata-batteri anslutet till IVT-värmepump

    För att få en bild av hur lönsamt det är att värma tappvatten med värmepump kontra fjärrvärme har fjärrvärmepriser och elpriser jämförts. Dessutom har vilket av fallen som ger den lägsta årliga kostnaden beräknats.

    De resultat som fås när värmeåtervinningsbatterierna jämfördes utifrån simuleringar och beräkningar var att Luvata-batteriet kan tillgodogöra sig mer värme jämfört med Retermia-batteriet i de flesta parametervariationerna eftersom dess temperaturverkningsgrad ligger något högre, cirka 81 % jämfört med 79 %.

    COP-värden för Kylma-värmepumpen har beräknats vara mellan 3,9 och 4,1 och för IVT-värmepumpen mellan 2,6 och 2,8. Vid beräkning av totalvärmefaktor för anläggningen blev fall 1 och 2 de bästa alternativen med en totalvärmefaktor på cirka 3,8 medan fall 3 gav en totalvärmefaktor på cirka 2,5.

    Vid beräkning av vilket alternativ som är mest lönsamt gav fall 2 den lägsta årliga kostnaden per producerad värmeenergi på cirka 390 kr/MWh jämfört med fallet där en fjärvärmeväxlare installeras på 640 kr/MWh.

    Utifrån de beräkningar som gjorts för både totalvärmefaktor och ekonomi kan slutsatsen dras att fall 2, när Retermia-batteri är kopplat till en Kylma-värmepump, är det bästa alternativet.

    The awareness of environmental impacts lead to that organizations are starting to work towards UN's global sustainability goals. To influence customers into a more sustainable behaviour, organizations have the potential to look at nudging as a tool. A nudge is a way to alter peoples behaviour into taking a certain decision. However, since many organizations offer their service or product in the digital environment, such as websites or apps, increased knowledge of digital nudging is required. This thesis aims to establish a framework for how nudges should be designed and used on digital platforms to encourage sustainable decisions. The purpose is to enlighten designers of digital environment of the potential of nudges, pitfalls to avoid, and a general design process to follow. The framework is based on a literature study and interviews with people familiar with the concept of nudging. To examine how the framework works a case study is performed, this includes a workshop, performing a user research, developing prototypes and finally, conduct user tests. By testing the framework further methods could be found, this meant that more practical steps could be included in the framework. The result of this thesis shows that the framework proved to be useful and functional to use when designing digital nudges to encourage sustainable decisions.

    En kortfilm definieras främst av dess längd på max 30 minuter, men även av att kortfilmsprojekt ofta utförs med en synnerligen liten budget samt att konstnärlig ambition värderas högre än kommersiell nytta. Att producera en självständig kortfilm är arbetsamt och sällan speciellt lukrativt, men att driva ett självständig kortfilmsprojekt, följa och fullgör sin egna vision, genererar erfarenheter som kan leda till fantastiska möjligheter. Tydligt är att producentrollen utgör en viktig del i ett kortfilmskapande, desto otydligare är vad rollen exakt består i. Den här studien har som syfte att kartlägga producentens roll och arbetsuppgifter vid skapandet av en självständig kortfilm.

     

    Parallellt med framställandet av rapporten utfördes ett kortfilmsprojekt av rapportens författare tillsammans med två kurskamrater. Målet med kortfilmsprojektet var att genom utförandet av de nödvändiga momenten i ett kortfilmsskapande erhålla viktiga och värdefulla erfarenheter inför framtida kreerande. För att förvärva ytterligare kunskap specifikt gällande producentens roll genomfördes en litteratursökning i ämnet. Denna litteratursökning kom att visa på bristen av tillgänglig information i ämnet vilket mynnade ut i rapportens frågeställning.

    The paper reports a study in which two aspects of interaction design - human interaction with technology and acting through technology were analyzed in the context of participatory sessions having the focus group format. The sessions were conducted as a part of redesigning a novel digital artifact, a web-based project management tool. An initial prototype of the artifact was introduced to two different groups of participants possessing expertise in, respectively, human-computer interaction (HCI) and teaching and learning, a key target application domain for the tool. Re-design suggestions provided by each of the focus groups were found to address issues with both user interface and functionality of the prototype. The main difference between the groups was in whether they primarily focused on interaction efficiency or artifact's integration into a larger social and technological context. Implications of the study for further development of participatory methods in interaction design are discussed.

Målet var att ta fram en enkel webbplats som skulle vara lätt att underhålla och inbringa nya kunder till företaget. Rapporten tar i första delen upp bakgrunden till detta projekt, dess syfte, förutsättningar det haft samt avgränsningar som gjorts. I den andra delen redogörs bland annat teoretiska delar kring hur en webbplats skapas med Wordpress, vilka för- och nackdelar som finns och ett antal viktiga punkter att tänka på.     Abstract  

    This  report  describes  the  production  of  a  number  of  short  instructional  videos  in  cooking.  The  project  was  a  thesis  project  for  Högskoleprogrammet  till  medieproducent,  which  is  a  two-­‐year  program  for  media  production  at  Umeå  University.  

    Video  production  took  place  at  the  request  of  SVT  (Swedish  television)  in  Umeå.  The  videos  are  meant  to  be  used  on  the  cooking  portal  SVT  plans  to  launch  in  the  fall  of  2015.  A  chef  was  hired  to  carry  out  the  procedures  to  be  filmed,  and  the  student  was  assigned  to  shoot  and  edit  everything.  

    Before  production  started,  cooking  instructionals  on  Youtube  were  analyzed,  to  create  an  idea  of  how  such  videos  typically  look  today.  The  results  of  this  analysis  were  then  used  in  the  production,  but  they  were  not  governing  in  the  design,  since  specific  requests  from  others  involved,  and  specific  conditions  of  the  project  existed.  Also  the  student's  own  visions  influenced  the  outcome.  Another  preparation  was  to  set  up  various  options  for  the  design  and  assessing  what  these  different  options  would  mean  for  the  result.  

    Shooting  took  place  in  the  chef's  kitchen,  during  three  days.  Each  video  was  filmed  from  two  angles,  to  facilitate  cutting  therebetween.  The  material  was  edited  with  the  aim  to  convey  both  clarity  and  good  aesthetics.    

    The  experience  resulted  in  recommendations  for  further  work,  in  the  form  of  a  manual  of  how  to  produce  such  cooking  tutorials.  The  manual  describes  what  equipment  is  needed  and  how  to  work  on  set.  Then  the  editing  process,  including  appropriate  lengts  of  the  videos,  is  presented.  The  manual  also  contains  recommendations  for  how  much  time  is  needed  when  producing  a  certain  number  of  short  instructional  videos  of  this  kind.

    New ways to search the library catalogImages, animations and sound has not an obvious role as information carriers in the library catalog. To create a new interface which inspires and allows a more visual browsing we collaborated with children, artists, design students and software developers. The prototype has been implemented on an interactive touch floor screen. The new interface is based on the circle form, is voice controlled and has images and animations in focus. This new information landscape involves the whole body in the search process. The interface can of course be displayed on more common technological devices as smartphones and tablets.

    Abstract [en]

    The effect of gas compression at the developed stages of flame acceleration in smooth-wall and obstructed channels is studied. We demonstrate analytically that gas compression moderates the acceleration rate, and we perform numerical simulations within the problem of flame transition to detonation. It is shown that flame acceleration undergoes three distinctive stages: (1) initial exponential acceleration in the incompressible regime, (2) moderation of the acceleration process due to gas compression, so that the exponential acceleration state goes over to a much slower one, (3) eventual saturation to a steady (or statistically steady) high-speed deflagration velocity, which may be correlated with the Chapman-Jouguet deflagration speed. The possibility of deflagration-to-detonation transition is demonstrated.

    Smartphones are used by incredibly many people, and in 2011 there where a total of 491.4 million units soled worldwide. This makes it a relevant technique for performing dietary studies when the test patients are on the move. This thesis shows how to create a back end environment for an Android application with existing techniques linked together, using MSSQL database, Visual Studio Web Service, web pages and C# classes and ASP.NET security. The back end development is used in a dietary study on Gothenburg University, butcould be applied on many similar back end projects using databases and server development.Techniques used in this thesis are: REST (Representational State Transfer) -client implementation and development inside the Android application, using HTTP methods to set and get information from the server and database, and JSON-format to read and transferinformation in an easy and understandable way, both from the Android application and from the database. FileMaker is also used in this project as a third part programme tovisualise the information in the database.

    Public areas are more and more equipped with digital screens that are used to inform or promote a particular product. This is a way to communicate with the people on that area. The idea is to get people's attention, make them read and take in information and possibly buy the product that is marketed. This type of digital display is called digital signage and can also be used as an information channel of a company where information directed to employees and visitors is displayed. CGI Östersund has a screen placed in their office that works as such an information channel.

    This thesis is about investigating and analyzing the current presentation and creating a new solution with a custom interface that will be more effective and engage more people.

    The new solution is interactive and clickable with the help of a mouse. A user study has been done using a Kinect sensor to see how many people are watching the screen, how long they look at the screen and from what distance. This data was also supplemented by a survey sent to the employees at CGI Östersund. The result of the user study shows that there was no significant difference between the previous solution and the new one. This may be due to two main reasons: the lack of time in which the experiment was performed and the location of the digital screen that is not currently optimal.

    Findwise is a Europe-wide producer of search solutions. One of their search solutions included a university course search interface, which needed revision due to a loss of coherence in the structure. This had negative impact on the simplicity and usability. The thesis describes a process for improving the interface design and user-friendliness of the course search. The search interface previously developed by Findwise have been studied and evaluated in order to develop and bring forward a proposal for a new interface design mock-up. In addition to this, two areas have been explored in more detail; search engines and Human computer interaction methods.

    The resulting proposal consist of usable methods for structuring course search interfaces, creating a more intuitive new design.

    Wind power will play a major role in the future energy system in Sweden. Most of the major wind parks are planned to be built in sites where the cold climate and atmospheric icing can cause serious problems. This underlines the importance of addressing these issues. The major cause of these problems is in-cloud icing of the rotor blades due to super cooled liquid droplets of clouds. The droplets freeze upon impact with the rotor blade and form hard rime ice. This rime ice causes disruption in the aerodynamics that leads to production losses, extra loads on the rotor blades and when the ice is shed it poses a safety risk to people in the near environment. This master thesis focuses on how to measure the accretion of ice and the correlation between measured ice and production losses of two wind parks in northern Sweden.

     

    The results show a good correlation between the ice accretion on a stationary sensor and the production loss from a wind turbine. In most icing events the icing of the sensor and large production losses from the wind turbine correlated clearly. Attempts to quantify the production losses at a certain ice rate measured with the stationary sensors was done, however no clear results was produced. The reason for this is that the wind turbines often stop completely during an icing event and that the time series analyzed was too short to be able to quantify the losses at certain wind speed and ice rates.

     

    Recommendations on the type of sensor which should be used was to be produced, however the conclusion was that no single sensor has acted satisfactory and could be recommended to measure ice accretion for wind turbine applications. Due to this, at least two sensors are recommended to increase the redundancy in the measurement system. Modeling ice accretion with standard parameters measured has been done and the results show that the time of icing could be determined quite well when the sensors was ice free, however when the sensors and especially the humidity sensors was iced the time of icing was overestimated.

     

    The main conclusion drawn is that there is a clear relationship between the icing of a stationary sensor and the rotor blade. There is still no which fulfills all demands of measuring ice accretion for wind turbine applications, further it is possible with simple models to roughly determine when icing occurs with standard measurements.

    In the wake of digitalization and recent technological innovation, news consumers have increasingly moved to online spaces to access news. As changes in consumer behavior appear even within these new contexts, several legacy news publishers that are often linked with high journalistic quality and trust are struggling to monetize on their content. In such struggles, an increasingly common sight over the last couple of years is the implementation of paywalls; digital boundaries that require consumers to pay before accessing content. This work applies a design thinking approach, utilizing a mixed-method methodology by interviews, surveys, workshops, prototyping, and testing, to explore the users’ experiences of navigating this landscape, while at the same time taking the perspective of legacy news publishers into account. The first part of the report entails the identification of a set of design challenges in this regard. The second part focuses on one such challenge—the onboarding experience of paying readership online—and explores possible solutions where the experience of the users and the business of legacy news publishers can merge. It argues that, while still inducing some degree of irritation in the users, a registration-first model with multiple choices to pay is likely to create new opportunities for news publishers as they seek to charge for content online, while at the same time being appealing to a larger audience. However, the role of the relationship between the individual reader and the content itself was identified as absolutely central in increasing the value perception of news online.

    Abstract [en]

    The overall purpose of this project is to develop an immersive storytelling experience that connects with both physical and social environment. To be specific, it focuses on the old prison in Umeå which was closed in 1981 and nowadays serves as a hotel. There are abundant historical materials related to the old prison preserved, and how might we transform such textual, historical information into relatively interactive experience. By collaborating with Hotell Gamla Fängelset ( Umeå’s Prison Hotel ), the result turns out to be an application in combination with augmented reality (AR), to build a guided tour that brings history to life at Umeå’s Prison Hotel. The tour not only demonstrates the plight of the prisoners, but also showcases the reform to humanized treatment over time, at the end linking back to the cozy hotel where the guests are staying. After users experience the tour application, it stimulates people’s imagination of the prisoners’ story and raises their awareness towards the cultural heritage that has always been forgotten.

    Abstract [en]

    This study is concerned with the negative effects of wearing corrective lenses while using eye trackers, and the correction of those negative effects. The eye tracker technology studied is the video based real-time Pupil Center and Corneal Reflection method. With a user study, the wearing of eyeglasses is shown to cause 20 % greater errors in the accuracy of an eye tracker than when not wearing glasses. The error is shown to depend on where on the eye tracker viewing area the user is looking.

    A model for ray refraction when wearing glasses was developed. Measurements on distortions on the image of the eye caused by eyeglass lenses were carried out. The distortions were analyzed with eye tracking software to determine their impact on the image-to-world coordinates mapping. A typical dependence of 1 mm relative distance change on cornea to 9 degrees of visual field was found.

    The developed mathematical/physiological model for eyeglasses focuses on artifacts not possible to accommodate for with existing calibration methods, primarily varying combinations of viewing angles and head rotations. The main unknown in the presented model is the effective strength of the glasses. Automatic identification is discussed. The model presented here is general in nature and needs to be developed further in order to be a part of a specific application.

    Abstract [en]

    We report a novel method for fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) biocompatible micro-fluidic flow chambers in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by 3D-printing water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) filaments as master scaffolds. The scaffolds are first embedded in the PDMS and later residue-free dissolved in water leaving an inscription of the scaffolds in the hardened PDMS. We demonstrate the strength of our method using a regular, cheap 3D printer, and evaluate the inscription process and the channels micro-fluidic properties using image analysis and digital holographic microscopy. Furthermore, we provide a protocol that allows for direct printing on coverslips and we show that flow chambers with a channel cross section down to 40 x 300 μm can be realized within 60 min. These flow channels are perfectly transparent, biocompatible and can be used for microscopic applications without further treatment. Our proposed protocols facilitate an easy, fast and adaptable production of micro-fluidic channel designs that are cost-effective, do not require specialized training and can be used for a variety of cell and bacterial assays. To help readers reproduce our micro-fluidic devices, we provide: full preparation protocols, 3D-printing CAD files for channel scaffolds and our custom-made molding device, 3D printer build-plate leveling instructions, and G-code.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis explores Virtual Reality (VR) as a digital medium for teaching in a professional context. In collaboration with ABB, a pioneering technology leader, the thesis questions whether VR could be the future medium for training ABB service personnel. 

    The research discusses how you can design for VR, by drawing parallels to traditional mediums; Moreover, the research covers insights into the ABB education and VR explorations. 

    Three experience prototypes were designed as the final concept. These experience prototypes aim to highlight educational use cases through VR, covering collaborative work, safety guidelines and various utilities. The goal of the final experience prototypes is to engage potential users and designers in a dialog concerning VR as an educational medium of the future.

    Today, anyone who has access to a mobile phone with a camera can provide information to others wherever, whenever.

    The mobile phone was crucial for the news reporting during the Arab Spring, when everyone had the possibility to reach out to the world through social media.

    During the terrorist attack in theatre Le Bataclan in Paris in November 2015, the only videos recorded from the happenings were with mobile phones, videos that later on echoed throughout the world.

    Mobile journalism, or MOJO, is a form of journalism that implies that the journalists record and edit the news reports by only using a mobile phone.

    Today, Sveriges Television are using MOJOs, and this report tells how they practically use their mobile phones in news reporting. It also tells the difference between a news report recorded with a mobile phone, and a news report recorded with a professional camera.

    The thesis is made using a qualitative method, where semi-structured interviews and Jakob Nielsen’s usability testing has been used.

    The result shows that a mobile phone is a very effective resource to reach out to an audience in a fast and effective way, and the respondents thought that the quality was good enough to use in news programs.

    Abstract [en]

    Web based television is a growing phenomenon, which becomes bigger and bigger for every year. Today many TV channels all have their airings on the web, for example Aftonbladet TV, and that’s where the degree project took place. Aftonbladet TV is a very successfull web tv channel, with over 45 unique programs who shows all from training and fitness shows to bloggers with hidden camera and simple news television. The examination paper discuss the history of Aftonbladet, all the way from the start of the newspaper to how it’s now. It also discuss how to produce a good news feature, what a remote camera is and finally web based television, with its history and the impact it has got in todays society. The examination paper is written with a qualitative method, and will be referring through the Harvard Model. The sources are partly from literature lent from a library in Stockholm and party through articles found on the internet.
