Smart Baggage in Aviation2011In: 2011 IEEE International Conferences on Internet of Things, and Cyber, Physical and Social Computing / [ed] Feng Xia, Zhikui Chen, Gang Pan, Laurence T. Yang, and Jianhua Ma, Los Alamitos: IEEE Computer Society, 2011, p. 620-623Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Nowadays, the Internet has dramatically changed the way people take the normal course of actions. By the recent growth of the Internet, connecting different objects to users through mobile phones and computers is no longer a dream. Aviation industry is one of the areas which have a strong potential to benefit from the Internet of Things. Among many problems related to air travel, delayed and lost luggage are the most common and irritating. Therefore, this paper suggests anew baggage control system, where users can simply track their baggage at the airport to avoid losing them. Attaching a particular pattern on the bag, which can be detected and localized from long distance by an ordinary camera, users are able to track their baggage. The proposed system is much cheaper than previous implementations and does not require sophisticated equipment.

    Abstract [sv]

Reconstruction of occluded facial images using asymmetrical principal component analysis2011In: 2011 18th International Conference on Systems, Signals and Image Processing (IWSSIP), IEEE , 2011, p. 276-279Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

When face images are occluded it becomes difficult or impossible to make a correct recognition based on only the non-occluded parts. With asymmetrical Principal Component Analysis (aPCA) it is possible to estimate occluded regions based on the content of the non-occluded pixels. Entire faces can be reconstructed from images where some parts are occluded with the occluded region being estimated based on the relation to the non-occluded region. We show the result with 3 different occlusion cases and compare two reconstruction methods. The results are measured both objectively and subjectively and it is shown that a clear and sharp image part should be used even if the resulting image have edges in it.

En studie om typografins betydelse i analogt format2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract (EN)

This paper is the final part of the Media Producer Program at Umeå University, including a supplementary year. This essay is a Bachelor thesis in media technology.

The purpose of this was to deepen my knowledge and extend my skills in graphic design, especially for printing. The goal was to find an answer to the question "what is the significance of typography in the analog format?". Another purpose was to test the hypothesis "it is harder to read text written in a different color than black on a white/light background".

This thesis are for those who are interested in typography and its importance. The thesis also refer to the history about typography, the structure and basic rules. It also presents a survey of its significance in the analog format. Not a statistical survey, but an empirical study that captures a bunch of opinions and values about the use of typography.

The results of the survey are presented with texts and tables, and it shows a disagreement to what the literature says. The result shows that people read text written with sans-serifs rather than text written with serifs. It also shows that people doesn’t thinks it’s harder to read text written with other colors than black on light backgrounds.

The result of the side project appears with texts and pictures, so you  can get an overview about the layout and how the results of the study, and the theory, are implicated.

In the essay I have also looked at scientific articles. You can read about that in the discussion section, where you also find suggestions to further studies and research in typography, as well as thoughts on the work in its entirety.

En kartläggning av producentens roll i skapandet av en kortfilm.: A survey of the producer’s role in the making of a short film.2016Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

This  report  describes  the  production  of  a  number  of  short  instructional  videos  in  cooking.  The  project  was  a  thesis  project  for  Högskoleprogrammet  till  medieproducent,  which  is  a  two-‐year  program  for  media  production  at  Umeå  University.

Video  production  took  place  at  the  request  of  SVT  (Swedish  television)  in  Umeå.  The  videos  are  meant  to  be  used  on  the  cooking  portal  SVT  plans  to  launch  in  the  fall  of  2015.  A  chef  was  hired  to  carry  out  the  procedures  to  be  filmed,  and  the  student  was  assigned  to  shoot  and  edit  everything.

Before  production  started,  cooking  instructionals  on  Youtube  were  analyzed,  to  create  an  idea  of  how  such  videos  typically  look  today.  The  results  of  this  analysis  were  then  used  in  the  production,  but  they  were  not  governing  in  the  design,  since  specific  requests  from  others  involved,  and  specific  conditions  of  the  project  existed.  Also  the  student's  own  visions  influenced  the  outcome.  Another  preparation  was  to  set  up  various  options  for  the  design  and  assessing  what  these  different  options  would  mean  for  the  result.

Shooting  took  place  in  the  chef's  kitchen,  during  three  days.  Each  video  was  filmed  from  two  angles,  to  facilitate  cutting  therebetween.  The  material  was  edited  with  the  aim  to  convey  both  clarity  and  good  aesthetics.

The  experience  resulted  in  recommendations  for  further  work,  in  the  form  of  a  manual  of  how  to  produce  such  cooking  tutorials.  The  manual  describes  what  equipment  is  needed  and  how  to  work  on  set.  Then  the  editing  process,  including  appropriate  lengts  of  the  videos,  is  presented.  The  manual  also  contains  recommendations  for  how  much  time  is  needed  when  producing  a  certain  number  of  short  instructional  videos  of  this  kind.

Evaluating University course search: - development of a new user-centred interface concept2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Findwise is a Europe-wide producer of search solutions. One of their search solutions included a university course search interface, which needed revision due to a loss of coherence in the structure. This had negative impact on the simplicity and usability. The thesis describes a process for improving the interface design and user-friendliness of the course search. The search interface previously developed by Findwise have been studied and evaluated in order to develop and bring forward a proposal for a new interface design mock-up. In addition to this, two areas have been explored in more detail; search engines and Human computer interaction methods.

The resulting proposal consist of usable methods for structuring course search interfaces, creating a more intuitive new design.

Filma med mobilkameran: En kvalitativ studie i användandet av mobiltelefonkameror i nyhetsrapportering2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today, anyone who has access to a mobile phone with a camera can provide information to others wherever, whenever.

The mobile phone was crucial for the news reporting during the Arab Spring, when everyone had the possibility to reach out to the world through social media.

During the terrorist attack in theatre Le Bataclan in Paris in November 2015, the only videos recorded from the happenings were with mobile phones, videos that later on echoed throughout the world.

Mobile journalism, or MOJO, is a form of journalism that implies that the journalists record and edit the news reports by only using a mobile phone.

Today, Sveriges Television are using MOJOs, and this report tells how they practically use their mobile phones in news reporting. It also tells the difference between a news report recorded with a mobile phone, and a news report recorded with a professional camera.

The thesis is made using a qualitative method, where semi-structured interviews and Jakob Nielsen’s usability testing has been used.

The result shows that a mobile phone is a very effective resource to reach out to an audience in a fast and effective way, and the respondents thought that the quality was good enough to use in news programs.

    Abstract [en]

Vattenfall Finance and Accounting services contacted media producer Mathias Ekberg because they needed a person that could create a video tutorial for a new method of working when invoicing in SAP.The purpose of the video is to in a simple and instructive manner, through video and audio, demonstrate how to use the new system. The project launched by creating a pre-study. Where among another things, a target audience was presented as men and women in the ages 30 to 65 with mixed experience. The production was partly performed in Berlin where among other things, a narrator for the video was recorded. The editing software used in the production is called Camtasia, which is a program that is adapted for tutorial videos. The result was a six minute long video. Images have been edited using Camtasia and a female narrator is explaining how to use the system. The conclusion of the project is the importance of an elaborate pre-study where the questions, what to do? When to do it? How to do it? And for whom is it done, are answered. If there will be a next time working with tutorial videos, I have concluded things thatcould have been improved. To use more of the functions and tools that Camtasia has to offer is an example of this, and also that the project could have been run morestrictly from my side, in order to avoid delays. The report also contains a theoretical part where important things when recording audio are covered. It is also possible to read about functions and tools in Camtasia that can be used when creating a tutorial video. Information on Vattenfall as a company and SAP can also be found.

Reality-TV: En fallstudie om SVT Göteborgs produktion av programmet Hjärta för djur2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Media producer Mathias Ekberg has during the spring term worked at SVT Gothenburg. SVT Gothenburg will during this time, for the first time produce an in-house reality production, instead of buying shows from an external production company. The show is called Hjärta för djur (Heart for animals) and tells the story of people who devote their lives to helping animals who have been mistreated. The production is a pilot project and SVT Gothenburg has therefore asked Mathias Ekberg to analyze the workflow and systems that have been used during the production. Mathias Ekberg has taken part in the project as coordinator and logger, which has made it possible to have good insight on the production as a whole. In other words, the following report is a case study on how to produce a reality show from the first idea to the show being delivered. This report will for the most part cover the production phase since Mathias Ekberg will not be able to gather empirical data from the other parts of the production, though these parts have been complemented through interviews. The purpose of this report in to learn more about reality productions and also to review the workflow that SVT Gothenburg has used to produce Hjärta för djur and which benefits and drawbacks it generates. The result of this study is that the workflow is relatively price- and time effective. The recording was compressed to four weeks, which meant that the team on the spot had to direct the reality in order fit the timeframe. Whether or not this had a positive or negative effect on the content is left to the viewer, but from a production point of view; it was a necessity. Most parts of the production were active at the same time which resulted in good communication between the set, editors and the rest of the production.According to most coworkers this workflow should work in theory. In this case the workflow wasn’t followed to 100 percent since it was a pilot project. This resulted in bottlenecks at the contributing editor and loggers. The recommendation is to refine every part of the production and that the editors should possib

I contacted the production company Salmonfox in the hope that they would have any projects that they needed help with. It showed that Salmonfox just started up an old project that they needed to complete. They wanted my help to edit some trailers and one crowdfundingfilm for the short film called, Captain Sweden (Kapten Sverige). Salmonfox are hopefully going to use the different trailers and crowdfundingfilm to promote the short film and get help with the funding to make a feature. The project began with a pilot study in which I made a time plan and a requirements plan, where the different requirements were set. A communication between me and Mathias were co-the-working-time. The project resulted in 3 teasers, 1 trailer and 1 crowdfundingfilm. These were made with guidelines and suggestions over how to make a trailer and my own suggestions. The conclusion of the project is to make a great pilot study so you easily can follow the planning and in that way reduce the chances of failure or get the feeling that the amount of time is not enough. The report’s theoretical part focus on how you make different trailers and gives suggestions on how to make your trailers better and reach out to the audience, which types of techniques there are and what you should think about. The theoretical part will also bring up what a crowdfundingfilm is and how crowdfunding works. The report will also focus on the platforms Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro, what they are and how they are working.

Gott ledarskap för kvaité: Litteraturstudie & observation från mediabranschen2016Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Good leadership is important if you like to have high quality in the results. My experience in the production of the television industry is that conditions for good leadership is insufficient. Therefore, I have tried to get answers for those two questions in my exam report:

What are the characteristics of good leadership? What are the prerequisites for good leadership out of production?

The method I used is a literature study and observation.

I have read a number of books and research studies about the importance of the leadership for the working group's final results and the commitment of staff during the working process. It is clear that leadership is an important parameter for a good result. However, I have not found any research on leadership in the media production business area. My observations from two media production companies have however shown the inadequate working environment for employees, lack of leadership, and difficult conditions for the exercise of positive leadership. I think the media production branch of industry should have business opportunities and reach more and broader customers (in this case television viewers) if there was a more stable labour market with clear conditions of employment, healthy working hours, multicultural groups and so on. Then those who have supervisory functions should get an opportunity to perform its leadership and develop as leaders. Employees would feel more committed and secure. More people would dare to work in the media industry and remain in various stages of life. For example, the time in life when you have children and thereafter. It would eventually provide higher quality and more stable results. It requires a major cultural shift that would create sustainable jobs and market.

Lösning för direktsänd videolänk för produktionen Go’kväll i SVT2014Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The talk-show Go'kväll (Good evening) broadcast five shows per week during the autumn, winter and spring. The show is produced and broadcasted by the non-news section (ATV) of SVT in Umeå. In some parts of the show, guests who gives comments to various recent events is wanted. Some particular times, the editorial staff has experienced that the most ideal guests could not be present in the show, mainly according to the circumstance that they have to be physically present in the studio in Umeå in order to participate in the show, often made impossible by travel logistics. The production wanted a solution for using the concept of remote located quests participating live via video link in chosen segments of the show. There was no economical budget for the project, so the question was: How to implement the concept of using remote located quests live in Go'kväll, only using present infrastructure and other resources? The TV-operations within the company of SVT is divided into three different divisions, ATV, News section (news, sport) and SVTi (Technichal development). ATV is produced and broadcasted from Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and Umeå. These four facilities produce and broadcast in HD-format while the news division mainly broadcasts in SD. Practically, this means that with no change at all in infrastructure, HD can only be transmitted between and from the ATV-locations. The main challenge then, become finding a solution where as much as possible of resources in terms of infrastructure and staff could be used and also meet the requirements of video quality. By making interviews and reading internal working documents, existing resources were surveyed and the results shows that possibilities to solve the problem using existing technical infrastructure and labour exists and should be implementable instantly, if requested.

”Nu är du såhär för att du ser ut så!”: En undersökning om normkreativ och inkluderande kommunikation2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Communications have a variety of stereotypes that create prejudices and norms. Which, in turn, amplified and re-used in a habitual patterns when communication is created. It creates a vulnerability and marginalization of the people is the norm deviant. The stereotypes and norms that reproduced again and again in public space affects the mindset of who should get seen and which not to have seen. To find out how these stereotypes can be changed and to get more people included in the communication, the study developed using the concept as a norm creativity, critical analyzes norm and stereotypes.

The study has a qualitative perspective, where three qualitative structured interviews conducted with people working with norm creativity and norms critical analyzes. The characters come from both the communications industry and the education system.

The three respondent states that it is important to work with a norm creative and inclusive communication. It would change the negative stereotypes that are in communication. They also see a resistance in the industry to move away from the familiar. They all believe that there is a fear of losing money on a norm creative communication. This is not right. When companies work with norm creative communication it will appear new, perhaps unexpected, audiences for agencies to reach out to. Which will then lead to more groups may be apparent in communication. This in itself leads to a more inclusive communication. Which leads to stereotypes and norms are changing for the better.

Studies in knowledge representation: modeling change - the frame problem : pictures and words1985Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In two studies, the author attempts to develop a general symbol theoretical approach to knowledge representation.

The first study, Modeling change -

the frame problem, critically examines the - so far unsuccessful - attempts to solve the notorious frame problem. By discussing and analyzing a number of related problems - the prediction problem, the revision problem, the qualification problem, and the book-keeping problem - the frame problem is distinguished as the problem of finding a representational form permitting a changing, complex world to be efficiently and adequately represented. This form, it is argued, is dictated by the metaphysics of the problem world, the fundamental form of the symbol system we humans use in rightly characterizing the world.

In the second study, Pictures and words, the symbol theoretical approach is made more explicit. The subject Is the distinction between pictorial (non-linguistic, non-propositional, analogical, "direct") representation and verbal (linguistic, propositional) representation, and the further implications of this distinction. The study focuses on pictorial representation, which has received little attention compared to verbal representation. Observations, ideas, and theories in AI, cognitive psychology, and philosophy are critically examined. The general conclusion is that there is as yet no cogent and mature theory of pictorial representation that gives good support to computer applications. The philosophical symbol theory of Nelson Goodman is found to be the most thoroughly developed and most congenial with the aims and methods of AI. Goodman's theory of pictorial representation, however, in effect excludes computers from the use of pictures. In the final chapter, an attempt is made to develop Goodman's analysis of pictures further turning it into a theory useful to AI. The theory outlined builds on Goodman's concept of exemplification. The key idea is that a picture is a model of a description that has the depicted object as its standard model. One consequence Is that pictorial and verbal forms of representation are seen less as competing alternatives than as complementary forms of representation mutually supporting and depending on each other.

Embodied tele-presence system (ETS): designing tele-presence for video teleconferencing2014In: Design, user experience, and usability: User experience design for diverse interaction platforms and environments / [ed] Aaron Marcus, Springer International Publishing Switzerland, 2014, Vol. 8518, p. 574-585Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In spite of the progress made in tele conferencing over the last decades, however, it is still far from a resolved issue. In this work, we present an intuitive video teleconferencing system, namely - Embodied Tele-Presence System (ETS) which is based on embodied interaction concept. This work proposes the results of a user study considering the hypothesis: “ Embodied interaction based video conferencing system performs better than the standard video conferencing system in representing nonverbal behaviors, thus creating a ‘feeling of presence’ of a remote person among his/her local collaborators”. Our ETS integrates standard audio-video conferencing with mechanical embodiment of head gestures of a remote person (as nonverbal behavior) to enhance the level of interaction. To highlight the technical challenges and design principles behind such tele-presence systems, we have also performed a system evaluation which shows the accuracy and efficiency of our ETS design. The paper further provides an overview of our case study and an analysis of our user evaluation. The user study shows that the proposed embodied interaction approach in video teleconferencing increases ‘in-meeting interaction’ and enhance a ‘feeling of presence’ among remote participant and his collaborators.

Distance Communication: Trends and Challenges and How to Resolve them2014In: Strategies for a creative future with computer science, quality design and communicability / [ed] Francisco V. C. Ficarra, Kim Veltman, Kaoru Sumi, Jacqueline Alma, Mary Brie, Miguel C. Ficarra, Domen Verber, Bojan Novak, and Andreas Kratky, Italy: Blue Herons Editions , 2014Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Distance communication is becoming an important part of our lives because of the current advancement in computer mediated communication (CMC). Despite the current advancement in CMC especially video teleconferencing; it is still far from face-to-face (FtF) interaction. This study will focus on the advancements in video teleconferencing; their trends and challenges. Furthermore, this work will present an overview of previously developed hardware and software techniques to improve the video teleconferencing experience. After discussing the background development of video teleconferencing, we will propose an intuitive solution to improve the video teleconferencing experience. To support the proposed solution, the Embodied Interaction based distance communication framework is developed. The effectiveness of this framework is validated by the user studies. To summarize this work has considered the following questions: What are the factors which make video teleconferencing different from face to face interaction?; What researchers have done so far to improve video teleconferencing?; How to further improve the teleconferencing experience?; How to add more non-verbal modalities to enhance the video teleconferencing experience? At the end we have also provided the future directions for embodied interaction based video teleconferencing.

Expressive Multimedia: Bringing Action to Physical World by Dancing-Tablet2015In: Proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on Computational Models of Social Interactions: Human-Computer-Media Communication, ACM Digital Library, 2015, p. 9-14Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The design practice based on embodied interaction concept focuses on developing new user interfaces for computer devices that merge the digital content with the physical world. In this work we have proposed a novel embodied interaction based design in which the 'action' information of the digital content is presented in the physical world. More specifically, we have mapped the 'action' information of the video content from the digital world into the physical world. The motivating example presented in this paper is our novel dancing-tablet, in which a tablet-PC dances on the rhythm of the song, hence the 'action' information is not just confined into a 2D flat display but also expressed by it. This paper presents i) hardware design of our mechatronic dancing-tablet platform, ii) software algorithm for musical feature extraction and iii) embodied computational model for mapping 'action' information of the musical expression to the mechatronic platform. Our user study shows that the overall perception of audio-video music is enhanced by our dancing-tablet setup.

Aesthetics of being together2018Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Design deals with matters of aesthetics. Historically, aesthetics in industrial design refers to the designed artifact: aesthetics of objects. When designed artifacts include digital technologies, aesthetics in design refers to what happens between people and artifacts as well: aesthetics of interaction. Now that these artifacts increasingly mediate our social lives, what aesthetics in design quite obviously also refers to, is what happens between people.

This dissertation proposes an aesthetic of being together, as a necessary addition to current notions of aesthetics in interaction design practice, when it engages with digital systems that are part of people’s social life. It does not answer the question what Aesthetics is in general, instead it examines the work that particular notions of aesthetics do in interaction design practice.

The practice based design research assembled in this dissertation starts from current notions of aesthetics in interaction design to explore the social experiences that mediated interactions between groups of people offer. What I found, through designing digital systems, is that current notions of aesthetics in interaction design are not conducive to addressing the kind of social experience people have with such systems. On the contrary, current notions actually inhibit interaction design to approach any experiences that cannot in the first place be conceived of as useful in terms of instrumental task performance. Yet, being social is hardly like performing a task or using other people in that sense.

An aesthetic of being together is a proposition of a different fundament for interaction design practice. In addition to referring to properties of things and qualities of interacting with things, it refers to the kind of relations that come to expression between people interacting with each other with these things. Consequently, interaction design needs to resolve basic issues in what it considers and brings to expression, i.e. people’s relations with things and people at the same time. This requires (re-) considering what the designed thing is, what interaction is about and what the role of design is in bringing those to expression.

My work contributes to the field of interaction design research an example of how, through practice, fundamental issues can be addressed. By orienting one set of concepts, ways of working and objectives into a different design situation, tensions built up that exposed foundational issues with that frame of reference, while pointing to the different fundaments needed to enable design practice to engage such situations.

The results of the practical experimentation led to the articulation of a series of structural mechanisms of mediating systems.  These mechanisms provide material handles for interaction designers on how experiences of being present with others take shape. They configure the relations of artifacts and people in different ways than current notions of aesthetics afford. This theoretical investigation is then synthesised in the form of a new logic of expression for interaction design practice: an aesthetic of being together.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

For several hundreds of years printing has been the only effective channel for spreading mass communication. During the 1900s several new media channels have been invented and, with the addition of the Internet, this has both changed the way media is consumed and has increased the competition between different channels. This qualitative case study of 37 firms reports on how relationships are used in the printing industry to relieve some of the impact of the competitive forces from new, and easily accessible, media as a means for marketing and, furthermore, on the impact on the printing industry as an industry. The results from the case study show that there are both internal and external effects of forming relationships and those vertical, as well as horizontal, relationships are of great importance to create a sustainable competitive situation for the printing industry. Relationships are used to increase both the strategic flexibility of the firm and the flexibility of the print media channel. Furthermore, the study illustrates that the printing industry, and print as a medium of communication, is drifting gradually away from the actual customer due to the new paradigm of value creation.

Concurrent sourcing as a competitive advantage: a case study of the graphic arts industry2013In: ANZMAC 2013 Conference Proceedings, Auckland: The University of Auckland Business School , 2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reports on a case study showing how the printing industry, by arranging their organizations, cope with the competition from new media and enable a high value proposition to their customers in terms of database driven print. The study is based on interviews with 24 firms in the graphic arts industry and a survey of 136 firms. The results show that even though the use of print in general is declining, print in campaigns is sometimes regarded as exclusive due to general noise in digital channels. The firms in the printing industry have engaged in partial vertical integration to get closer customer contact and, thus, increase the amount of customized print for marketing purposes.

Industry based projects and cases: A CDIO approach to students' learning2015In: Proceedings of the 11th International CDIO Conference, Chengdu University of Information Technology , 2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Just as the media industry, media technology and interaction design are fast moving areas. Even though grounded in theoretical models, the problems that the students face after graduation are constantly changing and contemporary, which makes a CDIO approach to education important. This paper reports a case study concerning a project spanning two consecutive courses with the main objective to renew the digital news platforms of the media group VK Media. The project was carried out in 2013 with students from the five-year Master of Science program in Interaction Technology and Design at Umeå University, Sweden. The results illustrate how project-based learning and real case-based group projects can enhance both students learning and the internal process at the external industry partner. The results clearly show how that not only goals in the CDIO Syllabus 2.0 have been met during the project but also actual value has been created for the industry as the students’ design proposals have been implemented and launched publicly.

Moving closer to the customers: Effects of vertical integration in the Swedish commercial printing industry2013In: Competitive Intelligence, Analysis and Strategy: Creating Organisational Agility / [ed] Sheila Wright, Abingdon: Routledge, 2013, p. 181-193Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reports on a study regarding how vertical integration is used to increase customer relations in the printing industry and illustrates the competitive consequences with vertical integration towards customers. Results show that since direct customers are perceived as more loyal and profitable than advertising agencies and/or print brokers, integration of content creation is common to increase relations with direct customers. However, as direct customers' part of total production is still very small, integration of content creation gives rise to a potentially competitive situation between printing firms and advertising agencies. Printing firms recognized this problem as they try to avoid this competition. Two different approaches to the problem are illustrated. Printing firms either focus on simple jobs that are not of advertising agencies' interest or they isolate these services in a separate firm, and consequently can compete for direct customers and still be a printing firm to advertising agencies.

    Abstract [en]

Images are central to firms in their use of social media platforms as part of their marketing strategy. Images are a powerful online marketing tool as they allow for engagement and personalisation of marketing content for individual customers. However, images can be a double edge sword in the web 2.0 world, where consumers are able to post content to branded social media sites. This study evaluates the benefits of integrating image recognition into social media from the users perspective. The pilot study undertaken found the majority of the participants thought the possibilities presented for image recognition technology are useful, however they showed concern in relation to their privacy if this technology were to be in social media networks. The results also showed that prior familiarity with this technology does not have any significant impact in how social media users feel about having this technology in social media.

    Abstract [en]

In recent years, schools made large investments to increase the integration and use of contemporary technologies in teaching and learning.Today iPads and educational applications are growing in popularity and are commonly used. These technologies have a potential beneficial effect on the learning, but studies show that some applications have flaws that hinder these positive effects, for example regarding the feedback provided to the user. This study has determined a number of guidelines for effective feedback in a learning situation and has further shown how well these guidelines can be reached in an educational application today. The study shows that there are both advantages and disadvantages of feedback in an application compared to giving feedback in a more traditional learning situation. Many of the guidelines for effective feedback were found to be possible to reach in an application, and the greatest advantage found in applications is that they can provide feedback timely on each action taken by the pupils.

Today, the majority of students and companies use social media to communicate andit is more important then ever to be available at the same places as your target people and competitors. This research paper is about social media, and how employers can attract Umeå University’s students through these medias. When we look at the results, we will see the result from the aspect of employer branding, and how business can be affected by using social media in their marketing towards students at Umeå University.Below we will find the theoretical aspects that occur with social media and the issues that form the output of the report. To obtain a good basis for the report, a questionnaire was sent to both employers and students to get opinionsfrom both perspectives. The theoretical aspects will be followed by a discussion part, where we receive answers to questions like "Which media is most frequently used by companies and students?"Concluding this research paper we can see by the results that for employers Likedin currently is very high prioritized by, while for many students is more important with the personal contact.

Students Writing History Using Traditional and Digital Archives2014In: Human IT, ISSN 1402-1501, E-ISSN 1402-151X, Vol. 12, no 3, p. 78-116Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study shows that upper secondary students’ historical writing maybe influenced by their use of sources from traditional archives versus theiruse of digital sources in databases. A qualitative approach, theoreticalperspectives, and historical empathy seem to be stimulated primarily byusing traditional archives and print sources, while digital archives andsources, in contrast, stimulate the use of quantitative data and a moresocial scientific approach. The results indicate a historiographical shift instudents’ historical thinking, which researchers of history education needto consider in a digital era. The results of this study call for reflections inhistory teaching to make it possible for students to learn and experiencethe double nature of history as part of the humanities and social sciences

    Abstract [en]

In this study, 110 Swedish upper secondary students use a historical database designed for research. We analyze how they perceive the use of this digital tool in teaching and if they are able to use historical thinking and historical empathy in their historical writing and presentations. Using case-study methodology including questionnaires, observations, interviews and text analysis we find this to be a complex task for students. Our results highlight technological problems and problems in contextualizing historical evidence. However, students show interest in using primary sources and ability to use historical thinking and historical empathy, especially older students in more advanced courses when they have time to reflect upon the historical material.

Facilitating the access to digital learning resources: comparing different approaches to connecting learning object repositories2010Manuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The rapid growth of digital learning resources has brought forward a number of issues concerning availability, distribution and use. Altogether, the issues are a mix of interplaited technological and pedagogical considerations. Some of those issues, mainly related to repositories and the distribution of digital learning resources, are examined and described in this article. A particular focus is put on how resources can be described and indexed using metadata, and on how access to digital learning resources can be improved and facilitated through federation and/or harvesting of metadata in order to tie several repositories together to provide a service that offers one single access point. The study also examined how this single point of access can be moved closer to the user (i.e. to the environment where digital learning resources are used) through simple federation of the service, enabling access to the network of repositories from any virtual learning environment. The study was carried out by experiments connected to a real-life case. The study concludes in several suggestions for how access to digital learning resources can be enhanced, as well as in the identifications of a couple of new issues that need to be addressed by future research.

The consumption patterns have changed in the whole world and the technological evolvement has led to a reform of different kinds of media in peoples everyday lives. The amount of information has increased and the supply has become globalized. This development have brought opportunities and challenges for both newcomers in the media industries, but also to more established ones. Examensarbete webbsida skapad i Wordpress2013Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Restaurant Balder was for a long time unhappy with their previous homepage which is also the reason behind this thesis. It was therefore in their best interest to update the layout and create a more user friendly webbsite to present their restaurant. Another reason for Restaurant Balder to update their website in my opinion was to make it more suitable for smartphones. Given the fact that more and more users today use their smartphones to browse the internet, it has become crucial for businesses to have websites compatible with smartphones.

The website was created in the publishing platform Wordpress since this is an easy way to create great looking websites. Using Wordpress is also an easy way for the staff of Restaurant Balder to maintain the website since their knowledge within this field is limited.

The purpose behind this thesis was to create a better looking website, with more focus on usability and that was compatible with smartphones. Thanks to these factors it was our hope to generate more customers to Restaurant Balder. Whether or not this was a success however is difficult to decide at this moment, since the website has been published for such a short period of time. Time will simply stell.

Webbsida skapad i WordPress2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
