The future of greying Europe: Conclusion2013In: Old age in Europe: A textbook of gerontology / [ed] Komp, K., & Aartsen, M., Dordrecht: Springer Netherlands, 2013, 131-136 p.Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Although Europe’s population is greying, the future of Europe does not look grey. What can be learned from this book is that old age is not necessarily characterized by frailty and decline, but instead can be a time of self-fulfillment, activity, and social participation. Moreover, we now know that population ageing does not need to threaten extant social and welfare state-related institutions, but instead opens up potentials for restructuring and reinvention. Life expectancy is longer than ever before and living conditions that enhance healthy ageing have very much improved. New technologies and Information and Communication Technologies may assist older people to stay in their homes longer. The growing possibilities to reach a good old age may have given rise to what is sometimes called ‘a silver economy’: an economy with all kinds of new products and services, particularly aimed at the growing share of healthy and wealthy senior citizens. The greying of Europe might, thus, ultimately lead us into a bright and colourful future.

Socionomstudenters välbefinnande: En studie om studenternas psykosociala välbefinnande vid Umeå Universitet2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ungdomsinflytande i Örnsköldsviks kommun: En tematisk analys om ungas möjlighet till ökat inflytande i Örnsköldsvik2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is based on three focus group interviews with minors living in Örnsköldsviks municipality. The aim is to investigate what minor individuals want to gain more influence in that concerns their citizenship rights. It also aims to investigate what obstacles there is in their surroundings that prevent them from influencing it. I have conducted semi-structured interviews with the focus groups. The theoretical framework consist of T.H Marshalls theories about citizenship, with the division of civil, political and social rights. Important theoretical conclusions from Tom Bottomore and Rut Lister theories about different group’s substantial opportunities to use their rights in their citizenship has also been used. The conclusion is that the minors living in Örnsköldsvik want to get more influence on their school, places to meet and the opportunity to create a culture place for them to practice music and other culture. The minors experience several obstacles to being able to gain real influence on their citizenship rights. Their young age was one explanation, but there are also laws and rules that prevent them from participating and gaining influenceof their rights in their citizenship

Alla är vi Charlie?: En diskursanalys av kampanjen #JeSuisCharlie på Twitter2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

'It's only a tradition': making sense of eradication interventions and the persistence of female 'circumcision' within a Swedish context2004In: Critical Social Policy, ISSN 0261-0183, E-ISSN 1461-703X, Vol. 24, no 1, 50-78 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper questions why female circumcision (FC) persists despite eradication interventions and the migration of people to non-practising countries and discusses the reasoning of Somali immigrants on female circumcision. It is based on interviews with diverse groups and individuals in the Somali community, mostly refugees in Sweden. Paradoxes implying denial and avoidance emerged. Female circumcision was described, as just 'a tradition' that has little to do with Islam. The fear of bringing up an uncircumcised daughter in the liberal sexual morality of Sweden was mentioned as a dilemma. Circumcised women said the health care they received during pregnancy and childbirth was poor while the law failed to take account of the experiences of the Somali people. We conclude that rather than eradication, interventions seem to have silenced and stigmatized the practice due to their failure to take account of its meanings, organization and contexts, including the diasporic dynamics within which immigrants negotiate identities.

Geographical distance in bibliometric relations within epistemic communities2013In: Scientometrics, ISSN 0138-9130, E-ISSN 1588-2861, Vol. 95, no 2, 771-784 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Scientists collaborate increasingly on a global scale. Does this trend also hold for other bibliometric relations such as direct citations, cocitations and shared references? This study examines citation-based relations in publications published in the journal Scientometrics from 1981 to 2010. Different measures of Mean Geographical Distance (MGD) are tested. If we take all citation links into consideration, there is no indication of MGD increase, but when we look at maximum distances of each relation, a weak tendency of increasing MGD could be observed. One major factor behind the lack of growth of mean distances is the form of the distribution of citation links over distances. Our data suggest that the interactions might grow simultaneously for both short and long distances.

The impact of labor market insecurity on mental health among immigrants in Europe2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The impact of labor market insecurity on immigrants’ mental health is understudied. This current study investigated whether labor market insecurity, as measured by different employment arrangements, has detrimental impact on immigrants’ depression, and if so, how it compares to the role of unemployment. Furthermore, this study investigated whether labor market insecurity had more detrimental impact on immigrants than non-immigrants. To do so, data from seventh wave of European Social Survey (2014/2015) was divided into three separate immigrant groups; first-generation immigrants, second-generation immigrants and non-immigrants. The results shows that labor market insecurity among immigrants had detrimental impact on mental health. The effects were not restricted to the first- generation immigrants’ mental health, they could also be observed in the second-generation immigrants and among non-immigrants. The results presented in this thesis show that not only unemployment, but also insecure employment arrangement have negative impact on mental health, both among immigrants and non-immigrants.

HBT-arbete utifrån likabehandlingspolicy: Första och andra linjens chefers möjligheter för och föreställningar kring arbetet med HBT-frågor på Skellefteå kommun2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Kuratorers tankar om relationens betydelse i samtalsbehandling2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Bullying and social objectives: A study of prerequisites for success in Swedish schools2009Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the relationship between organizations structure, culture and leadership. The specific organization that has been studied is Swedish secondary schools. The Swedish schools have a divided task, first to develop the students academic skills and secondly to develop the students socially and civically. This thesis has its interest on the schools social environment with special interest focused on questions regarding bullying and insulting behaviour. The data that has been used consists of interviews and questionnaires with students, teachers and principals in 24 Swedish schools that have been studied in a larger study. This work is a part of a project called Structure, Culture and Leadership – prerequisites for successful schools?.  The 24 schools that took part in the SCL study were divided in to four different groups depending on how well they are succeeding in reaching the social and academic objectives formulated in the steering documents. The main result show that principals that succeed to align structure and culture in relation to both the social and academic objectives are the ones that can be perceived as successful. It is these schools that have the lowest level of bullying and the highest grades. The principal takes social responsibility and takes questions in relation to bullying and insulting behaviour seriously. By doing that the principal can communicate the seriousness of the topic in order to develop awareness within the organization and a preventive work can therefore be possible. In schools that work with the students’ ability to be participative seems to develop the students both socially and academically.

    Abstract [en]

In the Swedish school law and curriculum it is stated that students shall be participative in their work. They should work in a participative manner and the pedagogical idea is that influence and participation has multiple benefits for the students’ development. In this article the relationship between student participation and school success is examined. By using a theoretically based participation index eight schools were chosen to be closer examined. Success was measured by the schools grades and the level of perceived bullying among the students. Student participation seems to have beneficial effects on the students’ academic and social development. In schools that have higher level of student participation the grades were higher and the level of perceived bullying among the students was lower than schools with a lower level of participation.

    Abstract [sv]

Influence in elderly and disability care2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Influence in elderly and disability care

Care for elderly and care for persons with disabilities are two sectors in the welfare state, aiming to give support, care and service when needed. There are both similarities and differences between the two sectors, our interest is how the concept influence has been discussed and understood in this both sectors. Influence is regulated in the Swedish Social Service Act and in the act concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments but is operationalized in different ways in care for elderly and care for persons with disabilities. It is for example much more concrete described for the care of persons with disabilities. In the care for elderly, influence is described in a more general way whit diffuse terminology.

The aim with the presentation is to discus differences and similarities in relation to influence and its consequences for the every day life. Laws, policies and previous research are discussed as is interviews with personnel working in respectively sector focusing on their descriptions of what they do at work. Our results show that personnel in the care for persons with disabilities include their clients in their work, influence is more visible for that group, and it is something obvious to consider at work in relation to participation and influence in ones own life. For the personnel in the care for elderly, influence is not as visible as a concept and when they talk about their work, they talk about routines and organisational needs. Our conclusions are that organisational guidelines as well as laws and policy decisions creates different opportunities to make influence for clients possible.

    Abstract [en]

Background: At the central administrative level in Sweden, care work is presented as a complex task for which personnel require special qualifications. In elderly care, questions of training and qualifications form the highly topical theme noticed by central actors. According to The National Board of Health and Welfare, the supply of manpower and the educational levels of the workers are the most important factors in ensuring high quality care for the elderly. The question of educational levels is, however, with the exception of personal assistants, not given as much attention in care for people with disabilities.

Aim: The aim of this dissertation is firstly to compare elderly care and care for persons with disabilities with the focus to describe and analyse education and work environment in these sectors. Secondly, the aim is to analyse if, and if so how, questions of education interacts with personnel’s view of the social work environment.

Methods: The thesis is comprised of four studies and paper 1, 2 and 3 are based on the results of a qualitative interview study, which was comprised of 48 persons who worked in elderly care and the care for persons with disabilities. Of the 48 persons who took part in the study, 11 of them worked as middle managers and 37 worked as care workers in the every day care. Paper 4 consists of a research summary on how education for care workers is being studied in a Swedish and an international context.

The personnel who participated in the interview study work in different care settings; in elderly care the personnel work in both sheltered housing and public home care services. In the care for disabled persons, the personnel work in residential housing with special services, in public daily activities for people with intellectual disabilities and as personal assistants.

Result: Both managers and personnel find it important for care workers to have a degree of educational background as a basis for the learning process at the work place. The results also show that educational levels and the work environment are themes that are discussed differently by different actors. In previous research on education for care workers in both elderly care and the care for People with disabilities, academic education or education at a ground level has been seen as problematic due to the distance it is said to create between the worker and the care recipient. My results show that the discussion about education for care workers has become rather biased, and that highly educated personnel tend to be more aware of the power they possesses and that the relation to the care receiver is important. In elderly care the issue of education seems to be more a question of a general educational level. In the care for people with disabilities, the question of education for personnel is on a more individual basis, where the care workers learn together with the care recipient. Educational levels, the work environment and relations with colleagues and care recipients are connected and support from the managers is important for understanding the work and the relational perspective.

Prevalence and Correlates of Sexual, Physical, and Psychological Violence Against Women and Men of 60 to 74 Years in Sweden2017In: Journal of Interpersonal Violence, ISSN 0886-2605, E-ISSN 1552-6518Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Past-year sexual, physical, and psychological violence against women and men aged 60 to 74 years was studied. The data derived from a nationally representative survey on violence in which approximately 2,800 women and men aged 60 to 74 years in Sweden participated. Women were significantly more likely to have been subjected to at least one form of violence in the past year. The prevalence of sexual violence as well as systematic and repeated psychological violence was found to be significantly higher for women than for men. Sexual violence was the most common form of violence against women. Systematic and repeated psychological violence was the most common form of violence against men. Additional gender differences were found in relation to victim characteristics. While associations among women were found between violence victimization and sociodemographic characteristics, health as well as social capital, only health-related characteristics were found to be associated with past-year violence victimization among men. Among women, economic problems, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, lack of trust in other people, and not having anyone to talk to were associated with violence victimization. Poor psychological health and an at-risk consumption of alcohol were found to be associated with violence victimization among men. The results highlight the importance of research on violence victimization to assess gender differences also when inquiring into the situation among persons in older generations. The results also indicate practical implications for caring professions; the need to inquire into the experiences of violence among older persons and to pay particular attention to these characteristics when encountering women and men in this age interval.

Omvårdnadsprogrammet: genomströmning, etableringsgrad och utbildningens relevans2011Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Since the publication of Edwin Sutherland's classical study, White Collar Crime, personality has been treated as completely irrelevant as a cause or as a correlating variable in studies of economic crime. This article questions that thesis. In an ongoing Swedish project studying economic crime in the areas of construction, engineering, and the music industry, 128 informants were interviewed regarding the personal character of the economic criminal compared to that of the law-abiding businessperson. Data were collected from five different regions in Sweden using the Big Five model, the personality model most often used within the field of personality research today. This article compares the results from the interviews with the few international studies that exist regarding economic crimes in these areas and common results are emphasized. It also presents nuanced analyses of the significance of personality in economic crime.

Integrated criminology and biological related criminology facing white collar crime2015In: Advances in Criminology Research / [ed] Guzman Julia, New York: Nova Science Publishers, Inc., 2015, 1, 41-72 p.Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

During the last two decades the rise of integrated approaches and biosocial approaches has given criminology a fresh theoretical and empirical approach. However, a full scale integration of these two approaches has not come to a conclusion over the etiological question of what forms the criminal mind. The aim of this article is to give an argument whereby the agenda of white collar crime research can be developed by a synthesis of integrated and biosocial factors. The argument takes its standpoint in one of the recent theories on white collar crime research today, the crime-as-choice theory by Shover, Hochstetler & Alalehto (2012). The theory proposes an integrated model of factors working on different levels. For example, the linkage between lacks of credible oversight on aggregated level, the existence of a crime-facilitative culture on organizational level, and propensities towards aggressiveness, thrill-seeking, resilience, and entitlement on individual level. However, as a typical social scientific theory the crime-as-choice theory lacks a complete etiological argument behind its proposed proximate causality. I elaborate upon the etiological concepts from the fields of evolutionary theory, biosocial criminology and institutional theory to exemplify how the crime-as-choice theory can get an even more coherent structure between ultimate and proximate causes.

Ivar Kreuger: An International Swindler of Magnitude2014In: Radical Criminology, ISSN 1929-7904, no 3, 47-70 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This essay discusses the case of Ivar Kreuger, the founder of Kreuger & Toll Inc. (a Swedish match conglomerate), known as the “Match King”. After his death in 1932, Kreuger was accused of falsifying accounts, forging documents and concealing a misappropriation of funds of a massive scale in the USA and Europe during the 1920s. The aim of this study is to explore the case of Ivar Kreuger and the business world of which he belonged, from a perspective of critical criminology, and mainly a left realist viewpoint. Using an integrative approach by combining data on an institutional, organizational and individual level, the essay will explore the case as a rather typical phenomenon within a capitalistic economy, despite its extreme outcome. It was the combination of a culture which bred monopolistic endeavors in business, together with an autocratic style of leadership and an ego which was intent on conquering, which lead to one of the worst known swindles in the history of white collar crime.

Teknik och konflikt: LKAB 1946-19871992Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the connection between technological dependence of mankind and its attitudes towards it. The issue is to what extent technological change in the workplace is a generator of conflict or a creator of consensus?

The subject of the study is the Swedish mining company LKAB during the period 1946-1987. The case study concentrates on the approaches to new technology by the local union leadership and the LKAB company management.

The analysis is carried out through a classification scheme over job- functions, divided into four functional categories. The classification is ranging from manually inclined work on the end to highly automized work on the other pole. The results show a clear and unquestionable development of mechanization. At the next level of analysis the focus is on approaches and ways of relating mechanization by the two parties took on the question, and how this influenced the relationships between the two parties. The final results show that technological change in general is a creator of consensus. However, at the same time, technological change is an unequeal process because the company commands control over three kinds of power resources; ownership, the legislative right of paragraph 32 and the monopoly of technological expertis. Organized labour can only try to attain technological knowledge and high levels of worker support.

The Act of Economic Crime: The Logic of Dirty Business and Normative Restrictions in the Swedish Restaurant Industry2000In: Journal of Scandinavian Studies in Criminology and Crime Prevention, ISSN 1404-3858, ISSN 1404-3858, Vol. 1, no 2, 156-177 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Why do respected businessmen get involved in economic crime? This is the classic question posed by researchers of economic crime. In this article both the economic and normative conditions on how it is to run a business are described, exemplified by data from the Swedish restaurant industry. The data were collected through semistructured interviews from 119 restaurateurs and 12 authority representatives. The data are interpreted with three hypotheses as guidelines: the hypothesis of 'differential association', the hypothesis of 'cross-pressure' and the hypothesis of 'the first generation of immigrants', which was formulated as a consequence of Merton's 'strain theory'.

The Psychology Behind Tax Crime: An Evolutionary And Game Theoretical Scenario2012In: Competitiveness: Psychology, Production Impact and Global Trends .Business Issues, Competition and Entrepreneurship / [ed] Alexander M. Beckford, Julianne P. Larsen, Nova Science Publishers, Inc., 2012, 47-57 p.Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article explores the relation between the willingness of corporate entrepreneurs to pay taxes and the impersonal demand of the tax authority upon corporate owners to fulfil the tax system. The relationship is discussed from a modern evolutionary and game theoretical standpoint including concepts as inclusive fitness, reciprocal altruism, prisoner’s dilemma, tit-for-tat, etc. The application of this theoretical model shows how entrepreneurs are willing to pay unselfish taxes if the taxes are distributed for community expenses such as schools, medical care, etc. and/or if they receive some direct tribute for their corporate activity, such as extra personnel provided by unemployment offices and paid for by the tax system. If entrepreneurs do not trust that the tax system will be used in either of these two forms, they are likely to feel that their resources are being confiscated. They can then logically - from evolutionary and game theoretical standpoints - evade taxes because they view themselves as cheated by an impersonal tax system.

The wealthy white-collar criminals: corporations as offenders2010In: Journal of Financial Crime, ISSN 1359-0790, Vol. 17, no 3, 308-320 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to map out the corporate criminality among the 70 top-ranked corporations in the Swedish business world. It aims to identify properties common for companies that get a decision by a regulatory agency and which kind of properties there are when the regulatory agency goes to a decision.

Design/methodology/approach – Data on decisions taken against violation (criminal, civil, or administrative) collected from annual reports (1999-2008) presented on the internet by eight regulatory agencies in Sweden. The corporations collected by the internet site “largest companies” and the Swedish business magazine Affärsvärlden (World of Business). The analysis of data were worked out by cross tab, designed as analysis of covariation between one independent variable to one dependent variable, or two or more independent variables (were one or more of them were held invariant to each other) to one dependent variable.

Findings – Approximately, 60 companies (85.7 per cent) had at least one decision against them during the period 1999-2008, and 28 companies had more than five decisions (court, administrative law, objection or settlement) against them, which means that 40 per cent of the whole sample performed a carrier criminality. Among the variables, low profitability, interior business, and to some degree, management control tend to covary with some or all kinds of decisions given by the regulatory agencies.

Originality/value – The paper provides the field of white-collar crime an investigation of corporations as offenders from the Swedish horizon. It provides regulatory agencies with a model of the causality behind the decisions against a corporation.

Trafficking in the Northern Countries: Eastern Prostitution from Russia to Sweden and Finland2002In: Journal of Scandinavian Studies in Criminology and Crime Prevention, ISSN 1404-3858, ISSN 1404-3858, Vol. 3, no 1, 96-111 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Trafficking is a relatively new phenomenon in the research agenda on organized crime. In this article the spread of the phenomenon in Scandinavia is described and discussed. Special attention has been given to Russian-organized prostitution in the Tornio Valley (the borderarea between northern Finland and northern Sweden). The data for the article consist of observations at special 'deposit-sites' in Finland and interviews with the authorities concerned (police, customs, social services, Center for Disease Control (CDC), etc.) in Sweden, and also newspaper articles that have reported on the phenomenon. The methological projection of the article is exploratory in character with the purpose of describing the phenomenon, rather than being able to explain it. The results show that there is an organized trade in women in the Tornio Valley (set rendezvous points, pick-up sites, transport via Russian-registered minivans etc). Despite this the phenomenon cannot be tied conclusively to Russian-organized crime. One conclusion is that further research on this phenomenon should gather information from the Russian authorities and from the prostitutes themselves.

White Collar Criminals: the State of Knowledge2015In: The Open Criminology Journal, ISSN 1874-9178, ISSN 1874-9178, Vol. 8, 28-35 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

White collar crime is the least studied and the least understood crime type in comparison to traditional crime types. This review highlights the recent developments in the state of knowledge over the white collar criminals. The review concerns the topics of demography, motivation for offending and career criminality among white collar criminals. It compiles the international results (mainly West-European) so far in the three topics. The review ends with a request on further research that needs to be done in four aspects: what is the main demographic difference between white collar offenders and confirmative non-offenders? How can we explain the difference in the age-crime relationship between street criminals and white collar criminals? Why do we still have the gender divergences by white collar criminals, despite the fact that women increase their participation into the labor market? And why do we know so little about the criminal motivation among white collar criminals?

Measuring trust in the police by contextual and individual factors2016In: International Journal of Law Crime and Justice, ISSN 1756-0616, E-ISSN 1876-763X, Vol. 46, 31-42 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigate if procedural justice and police competence affects trust in the police independent on the level of perception of corruption, and whether the impact of procedural justice and police competence varies due to perception of corruption. The data used is European Social Survey round 5 (2010), containing 24 countries. To separate individual effects from aggregate effects we used multilevel analyses. The results show that procedural justice and police efficiency are of importance for trust in the police independent of the perception of corruption. But the results also show that the impact of both procedural justice and police competence varies due to the level of perception of corruption. The conclusion is therefore that the fight against corruption must be prioritized to increase trust in the police.
