Attityder till kvinnomisshandel: Attityden till kvinnomisshandel i dagens multikulturella Sverige2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Domestic violence against women is a widespread problem around the world, this study aims to investigate Swedish men’s attitudes towards this problem. To investigate this I have done a historic overview of the political attitude change and I interviewed two ethnic Swedish men and two men with a foreign background, this because to get a fair representation of our multicultural society. The results and conclusions is that the attitude haven’t changed that much over the years, it is mostly the latest decades that politicians and the medial debate have acknowledge the imbalance of power between the genders and that the patriarchy is a major factor towards this attitude. The interviewed showed that the men with foreign background had a tendency to have more traditionally attitude towards women then the Swedish men.

Looking good: a study of gendered body ideals among young people2000Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The main objective of this thesis is to study how social and cultural norms regarding body and appearance are perceived and interpreted by young people. This is done by studying both how these perceptions affect young people and how the body is controlled and altered through practices such as dieting, exercise, plastic surgery and the use of steroids. Another question raised in the study concerns important sources of influence for how one's own body is perceived. The study is based on a questionnaire distributed to 167 young girls and boys aged 13,15 and 17.The theoretical framework includes both general theories of the body and gender perspectives. Four themes have been applied in order to capture central and important aspects of the ideal body. These are; the problematic body, the controlled body, the commodified body and the social body. These themes are all related both to gender and to the portrayal of bodies in mass media. The main conclusion is that the body matters very much to many young people today, both their own perceptions of it and what others think of it. The perceptions of one's own body is also very much gendered. Many girls have internalised a fragmented and problematised way of looking at their bodies. They report a greater dissatisfaction with their bodies than do boys. Size and shape are regarded as particularly problematic and a small and slim body is preferred. Girls are also frequently engaged in practices to alter and control their bodies and are more concerned with the state of their own bodies and how others' view them. Boys expressed a greater satisfaction with their bodies. Their dissatisfaction is primarily focused on height and weight and indicates a desire to become bigger and taller. Exercise is the prime way for boys to alter their bodies. However, their own bodies are not as problematic as for girls; instead they seem to be more concerned with others' bodies. Friends, together with mass media (particularly visual media and magazines), are regarded as the strongest source of influence on how the respondents (both girls and boys) perceive their bodies.Age differences are also found. Girls display a tendency to be more dissatisfied with and be more involved in practices to alter the body the older they are. Boys display the reverse situation. The largest differences can therefore be found among the oldest. The influence of friends and media tend also to be perceived as more important among the oldest.

‘An Association for All’: Notions of the Meaning of Autistic Self-Advocacy Politics within a Parent-Dominated Autistic Movement2015In: Journal of Community and Applied Social Phychology, ISSN 1052-9284, E-ISSN 1099-1298, Vol. 25, no 3, p. 219-231Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we seek to explore the tensions between advocacy and self advocacy autistic movements in a Swedish context with a special focus on the meanings that enable the production of particular understandings of autism and the autistic subject. Drawing on articles written for the Swedish advocacy magazine Empowerment written for and by people with autism, the discourse analysis explores two competing discourses: a reformist and a radical. The reformist discourse underlines a goal of (political) representation expressed in Empowerment. It may be understood as an important part of producing a legitimate autistic political subject–positioned as a full member, with a full membership–within a parent-dominated autistic advocacy movement. The reformist discourse can be viewed as a result of a negotiation, where full membership is conditioned on the parents' terms and granted on specific terms. These include working together (neuro-inclusively), advocacy based on interest rather than identity/position as a specific target/member group, agreement upon a definition of autism as a disability (a deficit) a person has rather than an identity. In relation to this, an alternative legitimate autistic subject is produced through invoking the counter-hegemonic radical discourse. Such a narrative produces the ‘Asperger’ or ‘Aspie’. Here, the ‘full membership’ refers to a sense of identification with sense of belonging to and being at home with other people with autism. It contains a certain amount of autistic solidarity within the group of adults with autism.

Developing an authentic sex: deconstructing developmental–psychological discourses of transgenderism in a clinical setting2014In: Feminism and Psychology, ISSN 0959-3535, E-ISSN 1461-7161, Vol. 24, no 1, p. 20-36Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The paper is based on a broader study of the use of discourses of transgenderism among sex-reassignment evaluators in Sweden. In this paper we explore how a developmental–psychological discourse was reproduced by the evaluators in their discursive negotiations of transsexualism. We found that maturity and authenticity are two key concepts that illuminate how the developmental–psychological discourse both clashes with and works together with a medical–pathological discourse of transgenderism. The developmental–psychological discourse can help to produce a definition of transgenderism that is more diverse regarding male/female dichotomies. This in turn can create a wider range of possible subject positions for patients who are seeking help. The developmental–psychological discourse also imposes additional limitations regarding the subject positions available to transgender persons through a demand for maturity and for having gone through all of the steps in the expected identity development process. The developmental–psychological repertoire casts transgenderism as an identity crisis.

Att åldras i dagens samhälle: Upplevelsen hos personer 80+ av att åldras i det ordinära boendet med fokus på meningsfullhet2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

IDROTT FÖR ALLA?: En fallstudie om inkludering i idrottsföreningar i Umeå2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Cancer patients' experiences with nature: Normalizing dichotomous realities2017In: Social Science and Medicine, ISSN 0277-9536, E-ISSN 1873-5347, Vol. 172, p. 107-114Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aims: To explore cancer patients' subjective experiences with nature in order to examine the relevance of nature-based care opportunities in cancer care contexts. The rationale was to describe the underlying mechanisms of this interaction and produce translatable knowledge. Methods: Qualitative research design informed by grounded theory. Sampling was initially convenience and then theoretical. Competent adults with any cancer diagnosis were eligible to participate in a semi structured interview exploring views about the role of nature in their lives. Audio-recorded and transcribed interviews were analyzed using inductive, cyclic, and constant comparative analysis. Results: Twenty cancer patients (9 female) reported detailed description about their experiences with nature from which a typology of five common nature interactions emerged. A theory model was generated constituting a core category and two inter-related themes explaining a normalization process in which patients negotiate their shifting realities (Core Category). Nature functioned as a support structure and nurtured patients' inner and outer capacities to respond and connect more effectively (Theme A). Once enabled and comforted, patients could engage survival and reconstructive maneuvers and explore the consequences of cancer (Theme B). A dynamic relationship was evident between moving away while, simultaneously, advancing towards the cancer reality in order to accept a shifting normality. From a place of comfort and safety, patients felt supported to deal differently and more creatively with the threat and demands of cancer diagnosis, treatment and outlook. Conclusions: New understanding about nature's role in cancer patients' lives calls attention to recognizing additional forms of psychosocial care that encourage patients' own coping and creative processes to deal with their strain and, in some cases, reconstruct everyday lives. Further research is required to determine how nature opportunities can be feasibly delivered in the cancer care setting.

Äventyr och vänner: En undersökning av Facebookgruppen On Edge - En mötesplats för tjejer som söker äventyr2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay was to investigate how a functional and committed online community was established. We have analyzed a Facebook group named "On Edge - a community for girls who seeks adventures" to explore how On Edge is communicating to create dedication and identification amongst its members in their online community. The study has combined theories such as social identity theory, prosumption, participatory culture and mediatization theory. We have used a multimodal analysis to analyze the administrators and the members posts on Facebook, an online survey for On Edge’s members to answer and an interview with the founder of the community, Ebba Cronqvist. The result of the multimodal analysis showed that On Edge uses text and images to create a united language within the group that leads to dedication and identification to the community. The survey showed that most of the members felt a need of a place where adventurous women could meet other women who are alike. They help each other because of the friendly atmosphere and by the meaningful exchange of thoughts and minds. We also found that there are some fundamental forces that shapes On Edge to such a well working community: the group is driven by a strong “why”, and by using a language appropriate for the target group together with images, it creates a friendly atmosphere amongst the members in the group.

Corporate Social Responsibility – ett samtidsfenomen: Uttryck, intryck och avtryck2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

CSR is a far reaching concept and practice, whose popularity and diffusion has increased rapidly in recent years. Research indicates that CSR has made an evolutionary journey from primarily being characterized by reactiveness to develop into a risk minimizing and proactive competitive advantage and should be looked upon as an answer to heightened societal pressure and awareness. Based on a review regarding different relevant theoretical perspectives, this master thesis discusses CSR as a concept and practical matter in relation to various strategically chosen representatives of a selection of professions.

Moreover, the data were collected through in-depth semi structured interviews. The findings show that CSR is a contemporary and highly context dependent phenomenon whose inherent multiplicity brings a distinct aspect of uncertainty to it, in terms of both meaning and practice. And in some parts there is a reluctance to communicate CSR due to a fear of missing out of important aspects. Furthermore, additionally findings tell us that profitability in a CSR context is a wide continuum of meaning. Moreover, in terms of future research it would be of interest to see more comparative studies between specific businesses and/or cultures to examine how CSR as a management idea is perceived and implemented.

Självkänsla och självpresentation online: En studie kring några individers självpresentationer i form av träningsbilder på Instagram och hur den upplevda självkänslan påverkar/påverkas av detta.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Through the birth and arise of the Internet people has been given great opportunities to make selective selfpresentations online, which in the long run has resulted in an easier retaining of the self- esteem than in the offline world. Simultaneously, the self- esteem has been viewed as a cause for both success and failure since it plays a vital role regarding our attitudes, emotional reactions and behavior. On this basis I wanted to study the relation between self- esteem and self-presentations closer. The purpose of the study is to describe and analyze how some users who publish training photos of themselves on Instagram experience how they present themselves within this forum and how these presentations affect/ are affected by their perceived self-esteem in their everyday life. The study is based on theories regarding self- esteem through Maslows’ hierarchy of needs, the inner and outer self-esteem, and social comparisons. Theories about self-presentation are also used through Goffman’s dramaturgical metaphor, impression management and self-enhancement. Previous researches emphasize users’ opportunities to selective self-presentation online, how the use may affect the self- esteem and how the self- esteem can affect the users’ self-presentations. Four semi-structured interviews have been conducted with women within a 21-27 year old span. The results showed that the respondents’ perceived outer self- esteem tended to rise by positive feedback such as “like”-notifications, comments and followers to their training photos. The respondents’ experienced that their outer self-esteem tended to decline by upward comparisons with users who also publish training images. Finally, the results show that the respondents want to present their most positive sides in the field of training in the photographs to present a desirable image of themselves towards their audiences, while they tend to avoid showing negative sides which could harm the audiences’ impression of them.

    Abstract [en]

A person’s identity in relation to mental illness, employment and the social environment is a complex social construction. A construction which is characterized by the view that a human develop its sense of the self in relation to other people in the social interaction, as the tradition for interaction theory suggests. In this study I relate to Erwing Goffman’s theory about ´Stigma´ and to Anselm L. Strauss’ theory about ´Identity´, with a special focus on ´turningpoints´ and ‘transitions in social positions´. The previous research shows that prejudice, stigma and discrimination associated with the phenomenon of mental illness are frequent in everyday life. Furthermore, there are negative attitudes toward sick-listed people and welfare recipients. This may in turn influence whether people who have or have had experience of mental illness succeed in getting and keeping a job in the Swedish Labour Market. The purpose of this paper is to examine how one’s subjective experience of identity is changing when getting an employment, when the person has experience of some kind of mental illness. It is therefore necessary to understand the importance as an employment may have for certain individuals. It is also necessary to understand the importance of social support and the responses from the social environment in the process of ´getting back´. The study’s empirical base is gathered through four semi-structured interviews of people who have had experiences of mental illness but also have kept an employment during a longer time. The method of Grounded Theory was used to analyze the empirical data. The interviews revealed that one’s subjective experience of identity changed in a way that these individuals realized that a human is so much more than just a psychiatric diagnosis. The change was made possible by the importance of an employment, which meant that a door was opened to find a new role and a new meaning in life. The importance of the social support and the social treatment was about such as having a coordinating role, giving courage and hope. The change of one’s experience of identity was in line with the recovery process and that they gradually recovered, developed strategies and regained a valued role in their own and other’s eyes.

    Abstract [sv]

The intelligence and personality of Finland's Swedish-speaking minority2016In: Personality and Individual Differences, ISSN 0191-8869, E-ISSN 1873-3549, Vol. 97, p. 45-49Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There is evidence that Finland's Swedish-speaking minority (Finland-Swedes) may have a distinct intelligence-personality profile from the Finnish-speaking Finns (Finns). We test this through an examination of the two groups' PISA (Programme of International Student Assessment) scores (which assesses representative samples of 15 year olds from OECD countries) and their personality scores, drawing upon a representative Finnish sample. We found Finland-Swedes to have slightly lower average intelligence. However, when controlling for gender and age, the Finland-Swedes score significantly higher on Conscientiousness, Extraversion and Emotional Stability. Overall, we found a Jensen Effect whereby most of the personality differences between the two groups could be attributed to the General Factor of Personality (GFP), which reflects the shared variance of lower-order personality traits. The GFP is assumed to reflect general social effectiveness.

Bringing Affect Back In: Measuring and Comparing Subjective Well-being across Countries2016In: Social Indicators Research, ISSN 0303-8300, E-ISSN 1573-0921, Vol. 127, no 1, p. 323-339Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, researchers and policymakers have paid increasing attention to cross-country comparisons of subjective well-being. Whereas classical theories of quality of life emphasize the central role of affective well-being (i.e., whether a person feels good or bad), previous comparative studies have focused almost exclusively on life satisfaction (i.e., cognitive evaluations of life). This study brings affect into the comparative study of subjective well-being, constructing a new measurement instrument that captures both the affective and cognitive dimensions of subjective well-being. Using European Social Survey data and multi-group confirmatory factor analysis, we estimate latent country means for the two dimensions and compare country rankings across the two measures. The results reveal important differences in country rankings depending on whether one focuses on affective well-being or life satisfaction. We identify crucial differences among top-ranking countries and, perhaps even more importantly, considerable differences in rankings among more moderately ranking countries. In a second step, we compare and evaluate the single-item measures commonly used in previous research with the results based on our new measures. We conclude by discussing our results in relation to previous studies, and in terms of their possible implications for future research and for policymakers bent on improving national levels of subjective well-being.

    Abstract [en]

This study investigates a Swedish educational project aimed to incorporate young people with intellectual disabilities into the labor market through internship. This qualitative interview study was conducted with six of the project student’s internship supervisors. The purpose of this study is thus to examine the motives behind the decision to take on a trainee from the program at the workplace. In addition, the study also aims to examine whether and how dif-ferent factors of the workplace affect the trainee’s opportunities for social inclusion in the workplace. Finally, the study seeks to investigate if the contact with the trainee influences the supervisor’s attitude towards people with intellectual disabilities and what might have an im-pact on that process. A theoretical framework, which includes Gordon Allport's "Contact hy-pothesis" and Max Weber's "Ideal types of social action", has been used to analyze the results. Study results show that the method of internship may lead to improved attitudes toward peo-ple with intellectual disabilities. An important part of this process proved to be that the work-place tasks were performed together with other employees and meant that the trainees had the opportunity to challenge their colleagues' perceptions of them.

NÄR FÖRÖVAREN ÄR EN KVINNA: Våld i nära relationer2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to describe and to interpret how fathers are concieved by their children. Various aspects of the male parent and the relationship between the child and his or her father are beeing investigated from the childs point of view. Forming an understanding of the fathers significance from the childs perspective is of particular importance for the study. This perspective is being formulated from a position that looks upon the childs socialization and the identityshaping processes as primarily a matter of "what children do with what is done to children".The empirical data in the study was obtained by interviewing one hundred children, seven and ten year old girls and boys, partly from Umeå and partly from some small villages a few swedish miles away from the town. The semistructured interviews were made with children from five different schools and from eighteen different school-classes.Data show that a vast majority describe a fairly close relationship to a father with clearly anti-patriarchal characteristics. The middle-class father is seen as a more family-oriented parent, more equal to his spouse than the working-class father who is more likely of beeing described in traditional terms. Some gender-related patterns are shown that concerns different orientations towards the father. While the boys tend to view their fathers in direct relation to themselves - him and me - the girls are more likely to describe their male parents as familyfathers and from a perspective that sees him as a partner to the mother. From the characterization the children made of their fathers from the family-drawings, four different cateogories, representing various perspectives on the father, were identified: The Positive, the Ambigous, the Disappointed and the Neutral. The symbolic interactionism, based on the works of George H. Mead, is argued to be a fruitful theoretical framework for understanding the socializationprocess in which the childs concepts of its father are being shaped. From a perspective on the cultural modernization and its impacts on parenting and the relationship between fathers and children, it is also claimed that there are reasons to beleive that the tendencies of release from a traditional determination not only put new burdons on parents and children in modern society, but also provide a widening of possibilities and a powerful potential for forming more "normalized", non-authoritarian and non-oppressive, interaction-based relations betweenchildren and their fathers.

    Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: Motivatio

Examining drivers of sustainable consumption: the influence of norms and opinion leadership on electric vehicle adoption in Sweden2017In: Journal of Cleaner Production, ISSN 0959-6526, E-ISSN 1879-1786, Vol. 154, p. 176-187Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Transportation accounts for a large and growing part of carbon dioxide emissions. With an increasing vehicle fleet worldwide private car use is becoming an acute problem in need of urgent attention and action. Policy interference and cleaner cars are not enough; alternative fuel vehicles such as electric vehicles need to be adopted by consumers as well. Previous research on pro-environmental consumer behavior and sustainable consumption has proven the importance of norms and pro-environmental attitudes. However, little research has focused on understanding interpersonal influence found influential in consumer behavior research relating to innovation adoption. Consumer opinion leading and opinion seeking are two such interpersonal influence attitudinal constructs that have not been empirically analyzed in relation to sustainable consumption and alternative fuel vehicles. The main aim of this study is thus to analyze the influence of a set of attitudinal constructs on electric and flexfuel vehicle adoption: personal norms, social norms, ecological attitudes, opinion leading, and opinion seeking. Data from a questionnaire survey on three groups of electric vehicle adopters and non-adopters is used (N=1,192). The results confirm the importance of personal norms, opinion leading and opinion seeking in the three groups also when controlling for socio-demographic factors. The main contribution of this study is that it shows the importance of both interpersonal influence and attitudinal factors as drivers for eco-innovation adoption. The study also contributes in showing that electric vehicle and flexfuel vehicle adopters differ in relation to non-adopters on several factors.

Adoption of alternative fuel vehicles: Influence from neighbors, family and coworkers2017In: Transportation Research Part D: Transport and Environment, ISSN 1361-9209, E-ISSN 1879-2340, Vol. 54, p. 61-73Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

During the last years, many governments have set targets for increasing the share of biofuels in the transportation sector. Understanding consumer behavior is essential in designing policies that efficiently increase the uptake of cleaner technologies. In this paper we analyze adopters and non-adopters of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs). We use diffusion of innovation theory and the established notion that the social system and interpersonal influence play important roles in adoption. Based on a nationwide database of car owners we analyze interpersonal influence on adoption from three social domains: neighbors, family and coworkers. The results point primarily at a neighbor effect in that AFV adoption is more likely if neighbors also have adopted. The results also point at significant effects of interpersonal influence from coworkers and family members but these effects weaken or disappear when income, education level, marriage, age, gender and green party votes are controlled for. The results extend the diffusion of innovation and AFV literature with empirical support for interpersonal influence based on objective data where response bias is not a factor. Implications for further research, environmental and transport policy, and practitioners are discussed.

Ung och fördomsfri?: En jämförande analys av homofoba och främlingsfientliga attityderhos ungdomar på svenska gymnasiet2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Subjective well-being among the self-employed in Europe: macroeconomy, gender and immigrant status2016In: Small Business Economics, ISSN 0921-898X, E-ISSN 1573-0913, Vol. 46, no 2, p. 239-253Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Previous research shows that the self-employed generally experience a higher degree of job satisfaction compared to regular employees. However, our knowledge of subjective well-being among the self-employed, the differences between various groups of self-employed and the potential influence of contextual factors is somewhat limited. The purpose of the present paper is to address this gap by taking macroeconomic conditions, gender and immigrant status into consideration. The results show that self-employment is positively related to subjective well-being, but there are also differences between groups of the self-employed; self-employed with employees report a higher level of life satisfaction than the self-employed without employees. Economic growth is more important for the level of life satisfaction among the self-employed than among employees. The analyses also point to different patterns for female and male self-employed without employees: only women experience a higher level of life satisfaction compared to employees. The results also show that the relationship is stronger among immigrants than natives. The results of this study confirm the importance of considering potential heterogeneity when examining subjective well-being among the self-employed.

Vägen mot en ny Polismyndighet - Strategers betydelse vid organisationsförändring2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today, the largest public organization in Sweden goes through a major reform. This study highlights the Swedish Police change from several independent organizations towards one common authority, and a group of strategists working intensely with the change during 2014. The study uses a qualitative method and the empirical material consists of interviews. The survey begins with a qualitative content analysis and is followed by analysis with focus on strategy.

The study results yielded following conclusions:

    • Strategy specialists and middle managers are important, and perhaps necessary, sense makers of strategic change, but also the Achilles heel in cases where they are absent
    • Project methodology, project governance and communication strategies can generate favorable conditions for implementing strategic change. Use of the methods should be preceded by the analysis of organizational culture and habit of leading and working in temporary project organizations
    • The Swedish Police deliberate strategy development process 2013-2014 promoted the implementation of strategic change within and across organizational levels
    • Public Organizations with complex organizational environment requires effective communication planning because the issues otherwise tend stuck on an organizational level and hinder the change process

Existentiella frågor I Det Senmoderna Samhället: En kvalitativ studie om unga vuxnas subjektiva upplevelserkring existentiella frågor2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    ABSTRACT - SAMMANFATTNING

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Spaces for support: Discursive negotiations of supporter positions in online forum discussions about suicide2018In: Discourse, Context & Media, ISSN 2211-6958, E-ISSN 2211-6966, Vol. 25, p. 98-105Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article investigates self-organized peer-to-peer support in online forum discussions about suicide. It analyzes how the discursive strategies through which participants introduce themselves as supporters relate to the support they provide. The analysis shows that the strategies employed to construct supporter identities commonly draw on what has been described as 'somatic individuality' - by which the management of biological 'risks' are framed as individual responsibilities - and by negotiating tensions between different perspectives on suicide. These are; (a) a discourse focusing on psychiatric knowledge and psychopharmaceuticals (b) a discourse focusing on social context and personal relationships, and (c) a critical stance towards the established care system. Negotiations between these condition, and are also conditioned by, power relations in the forum. These dynamics regulate the ways in which participants can use an online forum in order to move away from crisis points by discursively attempting to enter a supporter position.

Vardagslivets organisering: Jämställdhet bland förstagångsföräldrar2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sambandet mellan utbildning och främlingsfientlighet: Trender i Europa 2002 -20122015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Exploring communication of traumatic experiences from Khmer Rouge genocide survivors to their offspring: In-depth interviews with both generations2016In: International Journal of Social Psychiatry, ISSN 0020-7640, E-ISSN 1741-2854, Vol. 62, no 4, p. 327-333Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Traumatic events experienced by parents who have survived genocide influence mental health among their offspring. This study aims at exploring how the communication of traumatic events between Khmer Rouge survivors and their offspring was perceived by both generations.

Methods: Qualitative interviews were performed with six Khmer Rouge survivors and with six young people representing the second generation and were analysed using a content analysis approach.

Discussion: Parents felt that informing their children was important to instill gratitude for living a better life and to empower them. Among children, this was met with empathy but sometimes also disbelief and at times they blamed their parents for being too submissive.

Conclusion: The study discloses the complexity, pros and cons of intergenerational sharing of trauma.

IT och iPad som pedagogiskt tänk vid skrivbordet och i genomförande: Exemplet Furutorpsskolan i Hässleholm2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

At the background of an ongoing discussion about merits and professionalism in theeducational system this case study aims to depict the process of implementing Informationtechnology in Swedish schools through a specific example in southern Sweden. This is doneby interviewing key individuals involved in an iPad project, taking place in a period whereschools “are testing the waters” and media debates rage on what role technologies (computers,iPads and other devices) should have in educational settings. This qualitative essay showsboth possibilities and obstacles as seen by the participants at a school trying to keep up withincreasing demands from society as well as the educational system. The process ofimplementing iPad in the daily operation has served an invigorating purpose considering thatthe staff has previously been relatively deprived of technological benefits concerning bothstudents and educators. But the implementation has also been stressful and demanding forindividual teachers. This study shows that iPad has benefitted the teachers in terms offulfilling special needs in the classroom and has further shown that using IT mightcomplement their daily work. As for further implementation after this project is concluded, there are some aspects where caution should be advised which can also be useful to learnfrom: The importance of continuous in-job training, establishing practical solutions on siteand putting aside time to be used for planning and to reduce stress among the staff.

Skramligt, Argt & Enkelt: Identitet och Sociala normer, i relation till subkulturen Punk.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Grooming: Ur ett socialpsykologiskt perspektiv2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to analyse the descriptions of young girls' experiences of internet contacts, which have led up to sexual abuse. The aim is to give additional understanding and knowledge concerning grooming.       Grooming means that somebody gets in contact with someone else with the intention of committing sexual violations at a later stage. In most cases this concerns adults who contact children. We have chosen to confine ourselves to focusing on the grooming on internet that has happened to girls. By means of thematic analyses of texts from the books Jag kände mig speciell, grooming på internet, 2012 and Alexandramannen, vår tids största nätsexhärva, 2009, we have found certain themes and linked them up with previous research-work and also theory of social psychology. We have used previous research that describes young people's inclination for internet, which has primarily dealt with the control, anonymity and freedom they have experienced. We have also used studies that describe how male interpretative priority affects sexual acts, and discovered that this fact makes it complicated to report sexual abuse for women. The theories of social psychology we have used are Fromm's mechanisms of escape and Gidden's ontological security, which explain the development of the individual, and how that person is influenced by the conditions during his/her childhood and youth, and also Goffman's theories regarding the dramaturgic acting and internet as a specific arena. In this study it has shown that internet is a specific arena with specific rules that affect the girls' space of action and interaction. It has also shown that the girls' already difficult conditions during childhood and youth, for example because of having family problems and parents who are addicts, have influenced the girls' self-identity and self-integrity, which has created mechanisms of escape that has made it possible for

Shame and interpersonal sensitivity: Gender differences and the association between internalized shame coping strategies and interpersonal sensitivity2018In: Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic, ISSN 0025-9284, E-ISSN 1943-2828, Vol. 82, no 2, p. 137-155Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present study investigated gender differences in interpersonal sensitivity and internalized shame coping strategies in 252 undergraduate students. To measure interpersonal sensitivity and shame coping strategies, the self-assessment forms Interpersonal Sensitivity Measure and Compass of Shame Scale were used. The analyses revealed that compared to men, women display interpersonal sensitivity to a higher degree, and they use internalized shame coping strategies to a greater extent. The results also showed that interpersonal sensitivity is highly correlated with shame coping strategies. However, in contrast to earlier research, no gender difference was found, and gender did not significantly mediate the association between interpersonal sensitivity and internalized shame coping. These results could aid clinicians and researchers in promoting, designing, delivering, and evaluating treatments for patients with, for example, depression, anxiety, and interpersonal and/or relational problems.

Different childhoods: non/normative development and transgressive trajectories2018Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Different Childhoods: Non/Normative Development and Transgressive Trajectories opens up new avenues for exploring children's development as contextual, provisional and locally produced, rather than a unitary, universal and consistent process.

This edited collection frames a critical exploration of the trajectory against which children are seen to be 'different' within three key themes: deconstructing 'developmental tasks', locating development and the limits of childhood. Examining the particular kinds of 'transgressive' development, contributors discuss instances of 'difference' including migration, work, assumptions of vulnerability, trans childhoods, friendships and involvement in crime. Including both empirical and theoretical discussions, the book builds on existing debates as part of the interrogation of 'different childhoods'.

This book provides essential reading for students wishing to explore notions of development while also being of interest to both academics and practitioners working across a broad area of disciplines such as developmental psychology, sociology, childhood studies and critical criminology.

Coping and mental health of Iranian social workers: the impact of client violence2013In: Social behavior and personality, ISSN 0301-2212, E-ISSN 1179-6391, Vol. 41, no 5, p. 805-814Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Client violence towards social workers and its impact on their practice, and physical and psychological health, as well as the importance of coping as a factor in health outcomes, are well documented. However, there is a dearth of studies concerning these issues in Iran. We conducted a national survey of 390 social workers in Iran, and employed structural equation modeling to test the potential mediating role of coping strategies on the relationship between violence and health outcomes. Active coping was used more than passive coping and the use of active coping had a direct positive effect on health. Results indicate that the two coping behaviors are related and the success of each depends on the other. We discuss our findings with special regard to the context of social work in Iran.
