Kyrkan som plats vid skolavslutningar?: En studie av lärare och lärarstudenters attityder gentemot kyrkovistelse och konfessionella inslag2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Samme Fader han dock Bliver: En litteraturstudie angående gudsbilden i två barnbiblar2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a comparative literature study between two children’s bibles and the Swedish Bible. The study compares three stories from the Bible with the children’s bible versions of them. The purpose of the study is to see whether God is portrayed differently in the children’s bibles, and if so, in what way. The study uses narrtology to analyze the chosen texts and a hermeneutical frame of interpretation to ascertain what the difference between the versions of the same story is and if and how this effects the meaning, message or image of God conveyed by the original text. The study finds that many liberties have been taken with the original stories, the most frequent of which being different form of censorship. This is achieved by excluding violent and/or cruel parts of the stories in the children’s bible versions, or adding elements such as descriptions of positive emotions to God’s actions or enhancing the bond between God and other agents of the story.

The study is largely based on the work of Sören Dalevi and his dissertation Gud som haver barnen kär – Barnsyn, gudsbild och Jesusbild i Barnens bibel och Bibeln I berättelser och bilder, but this study is conducted on a much lower level and smaller scale.

Befästelsen av den kristna tron: En litteraturstudie om hur de jämtländska samernas kristna tro befästes under 1880-talet till 19132016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ecological sustainability in traditional Sámi beliefs and rituals2016Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The book gives a detailed overview of relevant traditional indigenous Sámi myths, beliefs and rituals based on empirical findings. The author inquires whether and how they are related to an ecologically sustainable use of the natural environment. Her main sources are ancient missionary texts, writings by Sámi and contemporary interviews with Sámi individuals. The traditional value system included ecological sustainability as a survival strategy. Beliefs and rituals, transmitted via stories, incorporated these values and transmitted a feeling of a round life, despite the strict rules for right behavior and punishment for transgressions. The term round symbolized a sense of safety, interconnectedness, reliance on mutual help and respect, identification and empathy with all living beings.

Reflections on ethic for ethnically non-indigenous researchers2016In: Agon Pohjoinen Tiede- ja Kulturuurilehti, ISSN 1799-1900, no 2Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

What constitutes ethical behaviour within and among research related to First Nations? This text was born out of an urge to explore the challenges faced by ethnically non-indigenous researchers who wish to study a living indigenous culture in a way that contributes not only to increasing knowledge but also to improving indigenous communities' living conditions. The present article does not to seek to provide conclusive answers. Instead, it aspires to discuss some issues raised in relevant decolonizing literature and reflect on the challenges they raise.  The texts provides an overview over past and present critical discussions on research ethics in projects related to the indigenous Sami people in Scandinavia. It gives special attention to the perspectives of ethnically non- indigenous master- and doctoral students.

Buddhism i skolan: En kvalitativ studie om högstadieungdomar med och utan buddhistisk bakgrund2017Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to investigate sixteen upper secondary pupils, of which six have Buddhist background, perceive the teaching of Buddhism in high school. Great emphasis is placed on their perception of Buddhism and the content as well as the methods used in teaching of Buddhism. The study was conducted using group interviews and individual interviews. The upper secondary pupils with a Buddhist background feel that they have learned more about the history of Buddhism in religious education in Sweden, but there is a lack of facts about Buddhist holidays and traditions though. The upper secondary pupils without a Buddhist background feel they don’t have knowledge of how a layman in Buddhism practice their faith and if there are Buddhist ceremonies. Based on the pupils' experiences, their teachers have used methods such as group work and presentations. As an important conclusion, I come to some degree of uniformity. Probably different perspectives on textbooks and films are needed.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of Att vara en i mängden… – En studie om religiös isolering på Facebook (Running with the pack… – A study on religious isolation on Facebook) is to gain an understanding of religious isolation between Christian, Jewish, Muslim and non-religious people. Further, the purpose is also to gain insight on how Christians, Jews and Muslims experience Facebook as a platform for expressing religious identity. The study was made using a concurrent mixed method, combining quantitative and qualitative methods, targeting Swedish Facebook users. The theoretical framework behind the study is The Spiral of Silence, by Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann.The results indicate that religious isolation exists, and that it effects how prone users are to self-disclose about their religious identity. Also, the study shows that public opinion does not affect how prone users are to self-disclose. Rather, it is determined by the perceived opinion of the people in the user’s Facebook network. Due to the algorithm used by Facebook to filter users’ newsfeed, the recommendation to all Facebook users is to deliberately show interest to a diversity of religious content

Vem är du som dömer din nästa?: En studie om kristna feministers syn på abort2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The present study deals with the encounter between the diocese of Luleå and the process of modernising. The main issue is individualism as a part of modern man’s identity. What kind of individualism was it, and how did it find expression in the diocese’s perspective on faith during the first half of the 20th century? A leading idea in the thesis is that the low church profile provided the diocese with a particular readiness to meet the demands of modern culture. The starting-point of the study is Philosopher Charles Taylor’s theory on the rise of modernity’s concept of freedom and perception of the self, which includes a justification of a positive side of modern individualism and a corresponding dismissal of a negative side. This attitude opens the door for the possibility of doing greater justice to the low church emphasis on the individual person. Taylor asks, from his moral-philosophical point of view, as well as the diocese of Luleå did, whether the Christian faith would have any future in modern culture. The low church view on faith becomes dynamic-extential as it dismisses a traditional metaphysical or theoretical explanation of God as a transcendent reality. Instead the subject is given vital importance. This apprehension reflects an influence from expressivism as a new form of consciousness, in protest against the science of the 17th that separated reason from both nature and feelings. This was inherent in the diocese via pietism. However, not an outspoken anthropology, the diocese nevertheless indicates that it considers man a linguistic and self-interpreting creature. This amounts to a more suitable view on the belief in modern culture, which no longer can rely on a commonly accepted belief in an inherent order of the world as an expression of God’s intentions and will.

Demonisk besatthet och exorcism.: En komparativ studie av två böcker som tar upp Klingenberg caset.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines how two writers deal with demonic possession and exorcism in their written works that both have a common theme, the same alleged case of possession and exorcism. By comparing these written works I explore if the authors share any common or varying theories on possession and exorcism and investigate if the common theme of the two books has contributed to the authors writing similar books. My results show that the two authors deal with demonic possession and exorcism differently, one has theological views of the phenomena but is sceptical of their role in the alleged case, whilst the other believes that demonic possession and exorcism can be explained using scientific theories and that they are phenomena that played a part in the alleged case. The two books are quite different. I conclude that both writers’ theories of the phenomena are dependent on the existence of the phenomenon of religion.

From Mixed Choir to Worship Team. Historical and Theological Perspectives on Song Groups in the Swedish Free Churches

The study gives an overview of different types of choirs in the Free Churches in Sweden, especially in the Baptist Union. The aim is to discuss the ecclesial character of choirship, a concept that is introduced here, and to present a deeper understanding of it as a fundamental expression of being church. The underlying hypothesis is that different kinds of choirship create different kinds of ecclesial communities. And vice versa: different kinds of ecclesial communities create different kinds of choirship.

From the more than 160 year old history of Baptist choirs in Sweden the study identifies and discusses theologically five different choirships: mixed choirs singing SATB, string bands and choirs, revival campaign choirs, youth choirs/gospel choirs, struggle song choirs, and worship (or song) teams. Other types, such as men’s choirs and children’s choirs, are also mentioned. The study makes comparisons between the choirs in the Baptist Union and other Free Churches, especially the Mission Covenant Church and the Pentecostals. An important aspect of the study is also the cultural and socio-political context of the choirships. The choirs’ musical styles and genres both reflect and contrast with the traditions, trends and fashions of society.

Different elements in the choirship are revealed and analysed: the organisation of the choir, the spirituality of the choirship and its ecclesial community, the different musical styles, the role of choirship in the liturgy, the conductor, the message in the song texts and the frequency of rehearsal and performance. The study shows that the practice of choirship includes an ongoing evaluation of two distinct aspects of this art: form and content. The history of the Baptist choirs addresses the challenge of keeping form and content together.

Vi kan om ni vill.: En studie om muslimska flickors möjligheter att nå målen i idrott & hälsa.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Tro eller fönuft i politisk islam2011 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The study should be seen as an attempt to examine how a group of selected muslims from seven different cities in Sweden relate to Lars Vilks’s drawings of the prophet Muhammed (also called the roundabout dog) and if they feel that their attitude towards the drawings has changed during the seven years that have passed since the first drawing was published in the newspaper Närkes Allehanda in 2007. To understand these selected muslims’ approach, experiences and feelings in regards to the drawings I examine in what aspect they find the drawings provocative. I also examine what consequences Vilks’s roundabout dog-project might have had  for individual muslims in Sweden. The result portrays their individual reactions, experiences, feelings, views and thoughts on Vilks’s roundabout dog-project. The answers from the informants have been analyzed and discussed based on hermeneutic research theory.

The informants own recount and the following analysis the study contributes to the understanding of the facts behind the perceived provocation of the images of the prophet Muhammad.

    Abstract [en]

This study investigates how the genre of movies known as ”biblical films” should be used in education of religion, specifically the version practiced in Swedish upper secondary schools. The problem as stated is that the biblical film has become a common tool for teachers, without a deeper or even general knowledge of what the biblical film consists of and promotes. Using a deductive method within a qualitative framework, this study compiles and analyses the existing scientific literature regarding the properties of the biblical film and the use of film in education of religion. The result is a series of conclusions based on deductive reasoning, drawing from the analysed work. These conclusions state that the biblical film is a tool for teaching about the theological content of christianity, as well as the transcendent aspects and, to some degree, the ethical aspects of religion. The study also concludes that the biblical film should not be used to teach students in religious history, and also not to represent the religions of judaism and islam. With these conclusions, the study creates a tool for teachers to practice while using biblical film in education of religion, and also points to related areas waiting to be studied in the future.

    Abstract [en]

The American televangelist and healer Benny Hinn was invited to host three meetings at a Christian conference in Uppsala 2010. The hosting institution was the Swedish charismatic Christian denomination Livets Ord. Benny Hinn has been invited by them several times before, and it can be said he is popular in some parts of Christianity, but considered rather controversial in others. The invitation and the whole event spurred an online debate, mainly on blogs and Twitter, where Livets Ord and Benny Hinn were discussed and scrutinized. This article will focus on describing and analyzing how the event was perceived and evaluated, primarily in the digital media, before, during and after the event. The churches are currently attempting to reach new audiences through digital channels, and hope to support their adherents in their everyday life beyond the meetings and activities hosted at their physical church building. However, as seen in the article, entering the digital era is not always unproblematic or straight-forward. What is of particular interest here is how the digital media relocate the event – how this opens up a previously closed event, and potentially flattens out and questions traditional authorities.

Digital church and media: In a historical and contemporary context2012In: Masaryk University Journal of Law and Technology, ISSN 1802-5951, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The underlying question for this article is: – “is what is now happening online really new, and something never seen outside the internet, and before the internet?” Previous research has to a large extent emphasized the distinctive characteristics of internet culture, as separated from what is happening in the “real/physical” world. That is a approach also valid for how churches online have been seen, and there has been an established distinction between religion online (religious churches and representatives with an online presence), and online religion (religion conducted and practiced in an online environment). However, technical advantages in recent years (which also has changed our behavior online) has made this distinction more fluid and difficult to defend. But there is also a historical continuity of using modern media within the church, making it difficult to claim that contemporary transformations within the Christian sphere are unique. There are several historical examples of how media use changes religious faith and practices throughout time. This article will put digital churches into a contemporary and historical context in order to discuss if it is relevant to uphold a distinction between churches online vis-à-vis churches offline.

"If you need a virtual community, something is wrong with your congregation": institutionalized Laestadianism and the use of digital media2016In: Journal of Religion, Media and Digital Culture, ISSN 2165-9214, Vol. 5, no 2, 279-295 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article studies how the Laestadian movement (a Christian confessional revivalist movement that is sceptical of technology) uses digital media in general, and the internet in particular, in its work. In a time when churches on a large scale are concerned with how to communicate with people through digital media, the Laestadian movement choses another path, based upon other assumptions and choices. The focus here is on how congregations and representatives use digital media, and not on individual and private use, and this article will focus primarily on Sweden and Finland. Based on interviews with representatives and by mapping the congregations' online presence, this article provides an interpretation of the use of the internet within Laestadianism. Through this group, we see how ideology, faith, and practices regulate a restricted, negotiated, and conscious use of the internet, which challenges any preconceptions regarding use and effect of the internet on religion. This case study therefore gives additional perspective for understanding the role of digital media within and in relation to institutionalized Christianity.
