Gender and status competition in pre-modern societies2022Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This innovative volume of cultural history offers a unique exploration of how gender and status competition have intersected across different periods and places. The contributions collected here focus on the role of women and the practice of masculinity in setting as varied as ancient Rome, China, Iran and Arabia, medieval and early modern England, and early modern Italy, France, and Scandinavia, as well as exploring issues that affected people of all social rank, from raillery and pranks to shaming, male boasting about sexual conquests, court rituals, violence, and the use and display of wealth. Particular attention is paid to the performance of such issues, with chapters examining status and gender through cultural practices, especielly specific (re)presentations of women. These include Roman priestesses, early Christian virgin martyrs, flirtation in seventh-century Arabia, and the attempt by an early modern French woman to take her place among the immortals. Together this wide-ranging and fascinating array of studies from renowned scholars offers new insights into how and why different cultures responded to the drive for status, and the complications of gender within that drive.

Ecological sustainability in traditional Sámi beliefs and rituals2016Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The book gives a detailed overview of relevant traditional indigenous Sámi myths, beliefs and rituals based on empirical findings. The author inquires whether and how they are related to an ecologically sustainable use of the natural environment. Her main sources are ancient missionary texts, writings by Sámi and contemporary interviews with Sámi individuals. The traditional value system included ecological sustainability as a survival strategy. Beliefs and rituals, transmitted via stories, incorporated these values and transmitted a feeling of a round life, despite the strict rules for right behavior and punishment for transgressions. The term round symbolized a sense of safety, interconnectedness, reliance on mutual help and respect, identification and empathy with all living beings.

Herren är min herde, mig skall intet fattas: En uppsats om svenska väckelserörelsers påverkan på Amerika-emigrationen2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper deals with the effect that the 18th and 19th century swedish revivals had on the emigration to America. Due to the law of 1726 against any practice of religion that was not the one preached by the established church, many swedes had to take their belief some place else. America offered a sanctuary for these grops of people due to its freedom of religion. The fanatic so called Erik Jansonist Movement from Alfta parish in Hälsningland is thought to be the first revival movement whos members emigrated from Sweden due to religious reasons. These people belived that their leader Erik Jansson was Messias and that America was the land of Kanaan. The fact that Jansson himself had been put in prison for his faith also made it imposible for his movement to stay in Sweden unless they aplied by the law and were forced back in to the swedeish church community. This revival later gave inspiration to other religious movements to emigrate from Sweden and start a new life in America. Amongst the biggest ones were the swedish lutherians and the Baptists wich this paper also includes. Both these groups had a substantial number of followers but the swedish lutherians were the ones who recruited the most number of people once they had established themselves in America. The Baptist Movement was already big in America wich made it easier for the swedish Baptists to settle there. In this paper I debate wether these people realy emigrated because of their belief or if their belief was one of many reasons. Also, I try to work out how much these emigrated revivals bacame the inspiration to other people in their emigration, believers or not.

De läste Dårhushjonet!: Laestadiansk ungdomsväckelse i Sverige 1970-19782012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Becoming Christian: On the Identification of Christ-Believers as Χριστιανοί2020In: Journal of Early Christian History, E-ISSN 2471-4054, Vol. 10, no 3, p. 64-82Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The origin of the designation χριστιανός is ambiguous. In this article, the use of this term is studied with special emphasis on how it reflects the selfunderstanding of the early Christians in the respective texts. In the late first and early second centuries, the term appears to have been something of a title of honour and an ideal which Christ-believers wished to attain. Toward the end of the second century, χριστιανός was somewhat diluted into referring to Christians as a group in general.

Ignatius, Polycarp, and Their Reception in the Second Century2022In: Early Christianity, ISSN 1868-7032, Vol. 13, no 2, p. 188-204Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [de]

Paul and the Jesus Tradition: Reconsidering the Relationship Between Paul and the Synoptics2022In: Journal of Early Christian History, ISSN 2222-582X, Vol. 12, no 2Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The relationship between Paul and the Jesus tradition is a central issue in New Testament scholarship. Although it is customary to look for Gospel traditions in the Pauline epistles, an opposite approach would better fit the chronology of the sources. It is more probable that the evangelists were influenced by Paul than the other way around. For this reason, a re-evaluation of the development of the Jesus tradition from Jesus, via Paul, and to the Gospels, is necessary. This essay examines the possibility of viewing Paul as a source of the Gospels.

Paul’s letters to the seven churches and their pastoral appendix: a proposal regarding the emergence of the corpus paulinum2024In: Novum Testamentum, ISSN 0048-1009, E-ISSN 1568-5365, p. 80-94Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article deals with the issue of the collection and formation of the Corpus Paulinum. It argues that a collection of Pauline letters to seven churches was crucial to this development. This collection possibly also included Hebrews in conjunction with Romans, but not Philemon. Another parallel collection was made of four letters to individuals, but was not popularised until later. When the two collections were merged into the present Corpus Paulinum, their respective order based on decreasing length was preserved, and they were placed alongside each other. As for Hebrews, it was relegated to the end due to the controversy regarding its authorship.

Peter's legacy in early christianity: the appropriation and use of Peter's authority in the first three centuries2021Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study combines traditional historical-critical methods with the sociological theories of Max Weber and Pierre Bourdieu in order to discuss how Peter’s authority is portrayed and used to create legitimacy in Christian texts from the first three centuries. The New Testament texts that mention Peter are discussed together with other early Christian writings that in one way or another relate to Peter as an authoritative figure. Peter emerges as a central figure in the diverse early Christian movement and is used to a high degree to discuss theological legitimacy. The main divide is between those who argue that legitimate theology should have a conservative point of departure based on traditional material handed down from the earthly Jesus and an apostolic succession based on interpersonal relations and those who argue in favour of a more progressive point of departure which places more emphasis on contemporary charismatic experiences. Both these perspectives are used by groups of various theological persuasion in order to argue their own position. Peter is sometimes used to legitimise a theological position with reference to Peter’s relationship to the earthly Jesus and sometimes to discredit traditions concerning the earthly Jesus by pointing out that Peter did not understand his true message. Peter is used as both positive and negative example for both these ways of creating legitimacy.

This article questions two central presuppositions of recent research on early Christian ecclesial office. It argues that bishops and presbyters should not be too readily equated and that ecclesial office was not as closely connected to the providers of liturgical space (owners of house churches) as is often assumed.

    Abstract [en]

The historical context of the Revelation of John is a much-debated issue. This article discusses the most popular theories concerning the dating and authorship of Revelation and finds them wanting. Rather than being a composition of an otherwise unknown prophet named John in the late first century, it is argued that Revelation should be regarded as one of many pseudonymous apocalypses that are composed in the early second century.

    Abstract [en]

This article examines the issue of orthodoxy and heresy in second century Christianity. Through examination of the examples of Valentinus, Marcion, Montanus, and the movements connected to their heritage in later centuries, the nature of the relationship between these figures and other contemporary Christians is discerned. It is concluded that these three examples of alleged heretics in the second century likely never separated from the larger church during their lifetime. Rather, the condemnations of them often stem from conflicts with their alleged disciples later in time These teachers were simply part of the lively theological debate of the diverse second century church. The division between orthodoxy and heresy in the church fathers should thus be viewed as a social construction rather than an apt description of the situation.

    Abstract [en]

The Epistle of James is one of the most overlooked texts in the New Testament. This is partially due to Luther’s judgement of the epistle as anti-Pauline. This article suggests that James should rather be seen as an early reception of Paul that brings new insight into the Pauline legacy of the late first century. James also helps us understand more about the theological issues of its day.

The purpose of the work is to connect orthodoxy with correct episcopal succession.

The Saying Attributed to Jesus in Acts 20.352021In: Journal of Graeco-Roman Christianity and Judaism, ISSN 1467-1085, Vol. 17, p. 196-204Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The literary background for Paul’s farewell speech at Miletus is a much debated issue. Although the speech is obviously constructed by the authorof Acts for the purposes of his narrative, there is reason to believe that it is based on Pauline material. However, Acts has Paul end his speech by quoting a saying of Jesus that is otherwise unknown (Acts 20.35). In this short study, I will discuss its origin and purpose. There are three main possibilities for the origin of the ostensible sayingof Jesus in Acts 20.35. Either it is an authentic saying of Jesus that is quoted, or it was invented entirely by Luke and put in the mouth of Jesus, or it is a Christianized version of a Greek saying, or a combination of these possibilities. Hypothetically, it could also be a quotation of someone else that is incorrectly attributed to Jesus. Regardless of the origin of the saying, it is an integral part of Paul’s Miletus speech. Robert O’Toole regards the saying asthe climax of the speech, and I agree that Paul concludes his elaboration o his own ministry by connecting it to a saying of Jesus. Although it is rare that Paul quotes Jesus in his epistles, it is worth noting that the Miletus speech shows many connections to First Thessalonians, in which Paul also quotes Jesus. The emphasis on remembering what Jesus said is typically Lukan but not uniquely so since there are many other examples of this kind of formulation in early Christian literature. So although the saying is clearly part of Luke’s literary construction, its origin remains obscure.

    Abstract [en]

It is widely recognised that the speeches of Acts play a significant part in its composition. In this article, I argue that the speeches of Acts are a key to understanding the ideological agenda of the book of Acts and its construction of the spread and development of early Christianity. Acts uses a rhetoric from below, arguing that Christianity is a religion for regular people rather than the elite. In this regard, the rhetoric of Acts is populist.

    Abstract [sv]

Shiitisk politisk idétradition2011In: Islam och politik / [ed] Göran Larsson & Susanne Olsson, Lund: Studentlitteratur , 2011, p. 65-92Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Tro eller fönuft i politisk islam2011 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Omodernt: Människor och tankar i förmodern tid2009Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

How the nineteenth-century evangelical revival strengthened faith and undermined Christendom: a Swedish case2023In: Temenos, ISSN 0497-1817, E-ISSN 2342-7256, Vol. 59, no 2, p. 157-180Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article deals with the paradoxical relationship between thenineteenth-century Evangelical Revival and secularization. It is arguedhere that the revival and its worldview played a role in increasingpluralism and choice in the nineteenth century – a process often relatedto secularization. The Evangelical movement both attempted to op-pose modernity and rationalism and emphasized religious freedom, voluntarism, and individualism. It therefore induced and popularizedself-reflection, doubt, and deconversion. It also favoured religiousdemocracy in opposition to a state-imposed religious monopoly (atleast in northern Europe). Furthermore, by dividing people into be-lievers and nonbelievers, it emphasized religious polarization. Thiscontributed to an undermining of established religious structures, fragmenting and pluralizing the religious landscape and giving peoplethe option to abstain completely from religious commitment. TheSwedish confessional (inner mission) revivalist denomination Evan-geliska Fosterlands-Stiftelsen (EFS – approx. the Swedish Evangeli-cal Mission Society), founded in 1856, is used as a case. The popularliterature they published and distributed manifested an evangelicalworldview. In this article four themes, based on the popular literature, are used to study empirically the changing role of religion in relationto nineteenth-century revivalism: ‘the dualistic worldview’; ‘conver-sion’; ‘activism’; and ‘self-reflection’.
