Vad händer med fritidspedagogyrket och fritidshemspedagogiken i Sverige?2014In: Barn, ISSN 0800-1669, no 3, p. 61-74Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Leisure-time pedagogues will often be left alone to handle the structural changes that impact on the conditions for their profession. This article is based on a qualitative interview study and aims to explore and discuss what happens with leisure-time pedagogues’ professional development and leisure-time pedagogics in the aftermath of Swedish leisure-time centers incorporation in schools along with decentralization and education policies over the last decades. Analysis and interpretations draws on profession theories and concepts of Bourdieu’s sociological theory. The results show that the exercise of the leisure-time pedagogic and its potential decreases in the leisure-time center and that the professional development of the leisure-time pedagogues to some extent is strengthen. In other cases the role of the profession is undermined. These variations can be related to the local governance of each school and to the strength of the leisure-time pedagogues’ collective base in the school unit.

The school-family relationship in socially divided Swedish lower secondary schools2013In: Barn, ISSN 0800-1669, Vol. 31, no 4, p. 89-103Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines the school-family relationship in order to understand what significance the family has for teachers, students, and head teachers. Drawing on theory by Reay (2004), this article deploys family and school habitus to analyse two Swedish lower-secondary schools with different social structures. The data consist of interviews and observations. Results indicate that one of the schools has a compatible habitus – that is, similar values among its families about education – which simplifies the relationship and allows it to be used to strengthen and develop school practices. The other school has a diverse habitus – that is, different values among its families about education. Therefore an equal relationship is more difficult to facilitate, because the families have different abilities to take on this responsibility. This article concludes that developing a pedagogy that fully integrates and acknowledges students’ ideas and life experiences is a potential force to change a school’s habitus, diminish the importance of the family habitus in schooling, and ensure that students receive equivalent education.

Ett föräldrastöd grundat i barnkonventionen?: En analys av hur föräldrastödsmaterial förhåller sig till olika dimensioner av barnkonventionen2014In: Barn, ISSN 0800-1669, no 1, p. 41-56Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish strategy for parent support aims at offering all parents supporting activities that should be based on the values expressed in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). A specific subtarget of the strategy is to make parenting programs more available to parents. The aim of this study was to examine if, and how, the books and booklets parents use in six different parenting programs describe the UNCRC and how the texts present societal notions of the child and the parent-child relationship. The texts were examined using a qualitative text analysis and a model describing different dimensions of the UNCRC. The results show that some texts do not describe the UNCRC at all, while some present it but without problematizing and concretizing it. Further, some texts relate family life toa societal context, while some more narrowly focus on the family interaction.
