Elderly Sami – symbols of Sami identity?: The role of elderly in the Sami community2010In: Ethnologia Scandinavica, ISSN 0348-9698, E-ISSN 0348-9698, Vol. 40, p. 27-42Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article is about the role of the elderly Sami in the Swedish Sami community and it is based om deep-interviews. To sum up you can find two dominating creative strategies among the elderly Sami of today in my material, strategies which strives to achieve feelings of inclusion and life consistency, to feel substantiated and valuable and to be as independent as possible. One strategy, which is practised by the elderly who still live among their relatives in the Sami village, is to be as active as possible and as long as possible in the reindeer herding. The reindeer herding is a way of life which symbolizes the good life. Another strategy, which is available for the elderly living in a larger village or in the city, is to take on the role as creator of Sami identity for the younger generation. The re-establishment of the Sami gives a sense of meaning and continuity and creates a common bond to the younger Sami who are searching for their roots.

Shafted: a case of cultural and structural violence in the power relations between a Sami community and a mining company in northern Sweden2015In: Ethnologia Scandinavica, ISSN 0348-9698, E-ISSN 0348-9698, Vol. 45, p. 73-88Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In the summer of 2013 a conflict between a mining company and a group of protesters took place in Gállok (Kallak) in northern Sweden. The conflict brought a long-standing debate to the surface about the so-called Swedish mining boom and its impact on both natural environments and the traditional Sami livelihood, reindeer herding. This article explores the power relations and structural and cultural violence experienced by members of a sameby (a Sami reindeer herding community) in its relations with the Swedish government-owned mining company LKAB. The study centres around the events that took place before and during the creation of an opinion piece, published in a Swedish national tabloid, involving both parties. The analysis uses two of the sameby members’ narratives to describe their experiences in order to investigate the power relations, which are then analysed using peace researcher Johan Galtung’s theories on structural and cultural violence.

Returnees’ Cultural Jetlag: Highly skilled professionals’ post-mobility experiences2019In: Ethnologia Scandinavica, ISSN 0348-9698, E-ISSN 0348-9698, p. 56-69Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article develops the concept of returnees’ cultural jetlag as an aspect of highly skilled professionals’ post-mobility experiences, based on an analysis of Swedish medical professionals’ experiences of working abroad and returning to Sweden. Its focus is on the experience of the post-mobility phase upon return to the country of residence, and the process which we conceptualize as “returnees’ cultural jetlag”, consisting of initial bewilderment, estrangement, and the endeavour to re-establish one’s cultural bearings, resulting in a new insights and perspectives on the taken-for-granted and a gradual, reflexive (re)adjustment. The article proposes theoretical refinements in relation to the more established concept of “reverse culture shock”.
