Injuries among weightlifters and powerlifters: a systematic review2017In: British Journal of Sports Medicine, ISSN 0306-3674, E-ISSN 1473-0480, Vol. 51, no 4, p. 211-219Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background Olympic weightlifting and powerlifting are two sports that expose the body to great forces. Injury characteristics have not been systematically reviewed for these two growing sports.

Objective The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature regarding various definitions of injuries used, injury localisation, the prevalence and incidence of injuries and the associated risk factors for injuries in weightlifting and powerlifting.

    Design Systematic review.

Data sources Five databases, PubMed, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, Scopus and Web of Science, were searched between 9 March and 6 April 2015.

Eligibility criteria for selecting studies Studies assessing injury incidence and prevalence in Olympic weightlifting and powerlifting were included. The Quality assessment tool for observational cohort and cross-sectional studies was used to assess methodological quality.

Results 9 studies were included in the review. Injury was defined fairly consistently across studies. Most studies were of low methodological quality. The spine, shoulder and the knee were the most common injury localisations in both sports. The injury incidence in weightlifting was 2.4–3.3 injuries/1000 hours of training and 1.0–4.4 injuries/1000 hours of training in powerlifting. Only one retrospective study had analysed possible risk factors.

Summary/conclusions The risk of injury in both sports were similar to other non-contact sports also requiring strength/power, but low compared to contact sports. The severity of injuries differed in the included studies. Since little has been studied regarding possible risk factors to injuries, further research is therefore warranted to explain why athletes get injured and how to prevent injuries.

Narrative review of injuries in powerlifting with special reference to their association to the squat, bench press and deadlift2018In: BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine, E-ISSN 2055-7647, Vol. 4, article id e000382Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Pain and injuries are considered a common problem among elite athletes and recreational lifters performing the squat, bench press and deadlift. Since all three lifts engage multiple joints and expose the lifters' bodies to high physical demands often several times a week, it has been suggested that their injuries might be related to the excessively heavy loads, the large range of motion during the exercises, insufficient resting times between training sessions and/or faulty lifting technique. However, no previous article has summarised what is known about specific injuries and the injury aetiology associated with the three lifts. Thus, the aim of this narrative review was to summarise what is known about the relationships between the powerlifting exercises and the specific injuries or movement impairments that are common among lifters and recreationally active individuals.

    Abstract [en]

This study was commissioned by the Västerbotten sports federation, who

called for an overview of the policies that the municipalities in

Västerbotten work after in the field of sport. The study aimed to identify

sports policy programs or documents that have been produced by the

municipalities, and how they work with them. Furthermore, the study

highlights the municipality’s politicians reasoning about

    sport and

    recreation-sector,

and how their sport policy-work was practiced. The data

collection was based on seven interviews and document-collections from

the 15 municipalities. The result shows that no municipalities have drawn

up a sport policy program, and

the lack of common goals, guidelines and a

clear vision of the sport and recreation-sector were big.

    The overall

process consisted of running the handling of cases involving the sports

industry. Municipalities work with sport and recreational questions dealt

largely with preserving the existing level and maintaining the sporting

    activities already in place.

Sagittal lumbopelvic alignment in patients with low back pain and the effects of a high-load lifting exercise and individualized low-load motor control exercises: a randomized controlled trial2018In: The spine journal, ISSN 1529-9430, E-ISSN 1878-1632, Vol. 18, no 3, p. 399-406Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background Context Assessment of posture and lumbopelvic alignment is often the main focus in the classification and treatment of patients with low back pain (LBP). However, little is known regarding the effects of motor control interventions on objective measures of lumbopelvic alignment.

Purpose The primary aim of this study was to describe the variation of sagittal lumbopelvic alignment in patients with nociceptive mechanical LBP. The secondary aim was to compare the effects of a high-load lifting exercise (HLL) and low-load motor control exercises (LMC) on the change in lumbopelvic alignment with a special emphasis on patients with high and low degrees of lumbar lordosis (lu) and sacral angle (sa).

Study Design This study is a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of HLL and LMC.

Patient Sample Patients from the primary study, that is, patients categorized with nociceptive mechanical LBP, who agreed to participate in the radiographic examination were included (n=66).

Outcome Measures Lateral plain radiographic images were used to evaluate lumbopelvic alignment regarding the lumbar lordosis and the sacral angle as outcomes, with posterior bend as an explanatory variable.

Materials and Methods The participants were recruited to the study from two occupational health-care facilities. They were randomized to either the HLL or the LMC intervention group and offered 12 supervised exercise sessions. Outcome measures were collected at baseline and following the end of intervention period 2 months after baseline. Between- and within-group analyses of intervention groups and subgroups based on the distribution of the baseline values for the lumbar lordosis and the sacral angle, respectively (LOW, MID, and HIGH), were performed using both parametric and non-parametric statistics.

Results The ranges of values for the present sample were 26.9–91.6° (M=59.0°, standard deviation [SD]=11.5°) for the lumbar lordosis and 18.2–72.1° (M=42.0°, SD=9.6°) for the sacral angle. There were no significant differences between the intervention groups in the percent change of eitheroutcome measure. Neither did any outcome change significantly over time within the intervention groups. In the subgroups, based on the distribution of respective baseline values, LOWlu showed a significantly increased lumbar lordosis, whereas HIGHsa showed a significantly decreased sacral angle following intervention.

Conclusions This study describes the wide distribution of values for lumbopelvic alignment for patients with nociceptive mechanical LBP. Further research is needed to investigate subgroups of other types of LBP and contrast findings to those presented in this study. Our results also suggest that retraining of the lumbopelvic alignment could be possible for patients with LBP.

    Abstract [en]

Sport is the biggest movement in Sweden and among youth is seen as the most important and one of the most prestigious leisure-time activities. Riksidrottsförbundet (RF) is the main organization of the Swedish sport movement. It receives funding from the government in order to represent and develop the Swedish sports clubs. The government’s choice to support sport within RF happens at the expense of other sports, for example skateboarding. Many youths today choose to engage in sport and/or physical activities outside the club activities. This study aims to map and analyze sport and physical activities within and outside the club activities, among ninth graders (15-16 year) in one school in Umeå kommun. Fifty-six pupils, in three classes participated in the survey and their answers are the result of this study. The result showed a broad amount of different sport and physical activities among the youths. Many youths quit their involvement within sport club activities in order to engage in sport and/or physical activities outside the club activities. The survey also showed differences in the youths motives of sport and/or physical activities within and outside the club activities.

    Abstract

Physical inactivity has become a global problem and causes millions of deaths every year. Fastighetsförvaltning AB has decided to carry out a workplace physical activity intervention in order to make the employees more physically active. The objective of this survey is to provide the information needed to encourage the personnel to engage in physical activity. The study focused on to which extent the employees was ready to engage in physical activity, which factors that impact the employees’ participation in physical activities and which subjects the intervention should contain. This study was based on a questionnaire which was sent to the 53 employees of the company. The results show that 95 per cent of the employees are to some extent ready to engage in physical activity based on TTM. Lack of time is the most common barrier to physical activity and doing things they enjoy is what motivates the employees. The subject the employees are most interested to engage in is physical activity.

    Abstract [en]

May 2010 a project called drop-in sports was started to get boys and girlsin the ages of 13-20 more physically active and keep them away from  committing crime. With the slogan ”come as you are, whenever you want and do what you want for free ” spontaneous sports was organized. To evaluate the project a research of the activity was carried out, where two of the objectives were to investigate how responsibility and empowerment is taken. Twelve hours of observations studies were used to collect data about leadership decision-making and democratic values in forms of respect, everybody’s right to play and influence. The study concluded that variations in the leaders decision-making affected the participant’s influence during activities. In terms of everybody’s right to play the study showed that, girls and younger participants were not included in the same scale at indoor activity as outside. Finally results showed that presence of leaders made an impact in respect and conflict management.

Umea: Umea university, Department of Education.

    Abstract

The study is based on an assignment from Vasterbotten Football Association that because of poor

participation in futsal activities wants to find out what clubs, the coaches and players in Vasterbotten

think of futsal. The aim is to find out the opinions on futsal and what these opinions are based on. In

addition, a literature survey to examine how sports grows and becomes established. Data were collected

through interviews in major cities and its surrounding areas in Vasterbotten. The coaches and clubs

opinions of futsal does not differ very much they both find that futsal is a fast, fun sport but in the end still

just a complement to football. The players in the study believed that it was the same as indoor football

and that they would have liked to have played futsal more than they do now. It did not differ significantly

between the opinions of the interviewees. To establish a sport there are certain elements that may affect

the development of a sport to different degrees. It is still sports culture which is the most important piece,

because the prevailing culture in Sweden right now believes that futsal is a complement to football this

cultural must change for futsal to successfully establish itself.

The Artistocratic Taste for Sport among Swedish Sport Researchers2017In: Scandinavian Sport Studies Forum, E-ISSN 2000-088X, Vol. 8, p. 1-27Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The cultural-scientific capital of sports researchers turns them into important arbiters of what is to count as a legitimate understanding of modern sport, and what is to be considered good and bad in sport. Drawing on the extensive work of Swedish sports researchers in social sciences and humanities between 1970 and 2010, the aim of this paper is to present a succinct view of how modern sport is portrayed in this intellectual milieu. The aim is to find out what its ascribed characteristics and essential values are, and then to contextualize this understanding socially and historically. The theoretical point of departure is the French cultural sociologist Pierre Bourdieu's writings on social classes and their different tastes for sport. Bourdieu's views on upper-class cultural fractions, which in his view includes university teachers and researchers, and their aristocratic attitude towards physical activity is of particular interest. This attitude includes a general distaste for win-at-all-cost – 'serious' – competitions, and a specific distaste for sports with a pronounced element of bodily contact such as boxing and football (soccer). According to the analysis presented here, this has also become the mainstream attitude among contemporary sport researchers in Sweden. The competition-critical discourse that is pronounced among Swedish researchers has one root in the general left-wing critique of the competitive market society prevalent in the 1970s, and another in specifically pedagogical ideas which claim that playful learning processes are always the most efficacious.

Umeå: Umeå university, Department of Education.

Physical activity is a growing problem in Sweden. To improve the situation a working method called FaR was developed. FaR is physical activity on recipe that primary health care providers can prescribe their patients.

The aim of this study was to investigate how a project in which, FaR patients are prescribed by the health center to a wellness facility may succeed. The project is taking place in Örnsköldsvik between the primary healthcare center Ankaret and Friskis&Svettis. Qualitative interviews were conducted with patients, prescribers and instructors.

The result showed that over all they are positive to the project but it reveals a number of obstacles on the road as the price at Friskis&Svettis and time constraints of prescribers. Instructors will also present a lack of knowledge on training with diseases and motivational theories. It is also found that the patients are requesting more support and feedback during the time of prescription. More time, feedback and knowledge is needed to improve the project.

An individual´s health is an important quality and asset to the individual, as well as to organizations and communities. The health of a human being is affected by the whole life situation, where the work place forms a significant part. The work place is an arena that can contribute to creating ill-health. In the light of increasing work- related ill-health in our society, it is important today to work with health-promoting initiatives in order to improve the well-being of people. It is advisable that an appointed key person at the work place works with health-promoting efforts. This person could very well be a health inspirer. The aim of this study was to make a closer examination and analysis of how health inspirers within the Social Services in Umeå identify themselves with their assignment

. Ten health inspirers took part in a qualitative interview study. The result showed that the assignment of the health inspires was to work with conveying knowledge and motivating their co-workers to a healthy behavior which in turn would lead to well-being and good health. The support and feedback by the manager and co-workers were important factors in motivating the health inspirers for the assignment. More distinct frameworks and guidelines proved to be factors that very well could have facilitated the work of the health inspirers.

The Swedish way to organize sport has a long tradition and the parents play an important role in ways to organize sport. Without the thousands of adults who voluntary work the sport associations would have problems to survive. However, there are tendencies to that commitment is reduced, which means that the activity is exposed. The purpose of this study was to examine parents opinions about a nonprofit children´s sport respective professional children´s sport. The study was based on questionnaires which were distributed to 83 parents in four different sports; equestrian sport, track and field sports, ice hockey and soccer. The results show that the parents value the sport, the physical activity, in itself, and not the actual organization of the non-profit sport. Furthermore, the parents seem to be in general positive about the changes a professionalising could mean.

    Abstract [en]

This paper has it’s background in Physical Activity on Prescription, a projectwhich the Swedish sports movement is part of. The study refers to a limiteddivision of sports for adults, namely a phenomenon here by referred to as dropin-activity. This form of physical activity is characterized by an understandingthat the participant often lack experience and that it is possible to pay for eachoccasion. The purpose of the study was thus to take a closer look on organized,non-profit sports clubs which offer this type of exercise for adults. To get theresults interviews was carried out in three different sports clubs with leaders ofthe activity and members from the board. The respondents were asked to talkabout their thoughts and experiences of the activity involving physical activity ofdrop-in nature executed in each sport club. The theoretical framework used toanalyze the interviews was the phenomenon of logics within sport, as describedby Stenling and Fahlén (2009). The analysis resulted in the identification of twomain logics; Social values and Resources for continued existence. The healthperspective were analyzed on the basis what had, or had not been said abouthealth in the interviews. The results show that growth is a main issue which canbe used to motivate the Swedish sport clubs to develop their activities. It’s alsoshown that the participants of the drop in-activities don’t get as much attention asthe ordinary members of the sport clubs which is crucial if the social values areto be obtained. The conclusions are that in order to make the healthimplementations work the programmatic approach has to be clear and consist ofterms that is easily related to.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to define students’ needs and wishes about the content of a health website. A questionnaire was distributed to 531 students at three different Universities studying two different education programs, of which 98 participated. The research was based on relevant articles, studies and literature. The study shows that students are interested in a health website and there seems to be a demand, among students, to improve their health. The study also shows that a health website would be a suitable intervention, which would reach a larger group of students compared to the interventions existing today, where the individual student would find her or his own way to a good health. Swedish University students appear to be in good health. However, the students seem to suffer from negative stress, which appears to be a common and serious problem. As the students at Sweden’s Universities have expanded during the last decades, the needs, wishes and conditions have consequently become scattered. The work in student health needs to be further researched and developed in order to meet each individual student’s needs.

(The environment surrounding female football players in Dalarna, Sweden – What factors affect their opportunities to develop?) Bachelor Essay in Swedish. Umeå: Umeå university, Department of Education

The following study investigated the environment in which female football players in the district of Dalarna in Sweden operate. The aim was to identify the elements that affect the players’ ability to develop according to their own potential, values and differences. Questions regarding how coaches and leaders perceive the availability of football in Dalarna and in which way players are given opportunities to develop in accordance with their own potential, values and differences were answered. Questionnaires were used as method, using the answers from 22 active coaches and leaders for female football as responders. Different factors in the environment were reported as influential for the players’ individual development among which the access to appropriate training facilities and the number of active players in each team were identified as existing and prevalent problems. In spite of this many coaches reported a need for more female football teams, creating an interesting organization paradox for future research.

Umeå: Umeå University, Department of Education.

    Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze in what extent Umeå municipality health coaches uses their policy "work environment, health and rehabilitation" in social services workplaces. Furthermore was the purpose to analyze the policy "work environment, health and rehabilitation" with help from Bacchi’s policy analyzing model. The study was based on a qualitative design and involved seven health coaches from the social service. Interviews were conducted and analyzed with sentence concentration. The result showed that it differs from person to person on which view on health they have and what they believe represent health promoting work. Most of the interviewees notions and understandings of health and health promoting work are however the same as the municipality’s. The health coaches follow the municipality’s directions on how the assignment should be executed, though they vary in the degree of engagement. Furthermore, all of the interviewees experience that they have the support from the municipality that they need. A few of them though lack the support from their leader. Finally, the result from the policy-analyze showed that Umeå municipality’s problem was that their quality of work was inadequate. It also showed that the municipality put a lot of responsibility on the leaders, but that they should take more accountability themselves.

Sammanställning av befintlig forskning om innebandy2012Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Background:

The purpose of this study was to comprehensively review the scientific research on floorball at the competitive and recreational levels according to field of study.

    Methods:

Full articles containing original data on floorball that had been published in English in peer-reviewed journals were considered for inclusion.

    Results:

Of 75 articles screened, 19 were included in this systematic review. One article each was identified in the fields of sports management and sports psychology, and the remaining 17 articles were in the field of sports medicine. Injury epidemiology in floorball players was the most thoroughly examined topic of research. To date, no research has been performed on the incidence of floorball-related injury, or any aspect of the sport, in children and adolescents.

    Conclusion:

Collaborative research among sports science disciplines is needed to identify strategies to reduce the incidence of injury and enhance the performance of licensed floorball players. Despite the increasing popularity of floorball in recent years, surprisingly little research has examined this sport.

(Physical activity and sports for adults in the county of Västerbotten – opportunities and challenges for a future activity directory). Bachelor Essay in Swedish. Umeå: Umeå university, Department of Education.

    Abstract

This paper originates from the need to organize all physical activities in the county of Västerbotten. In collaboration with the sports association of Västerbotten a future project will later be made to gather all these activities in one place. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze different sports clubs in the county of Västerbotten and their range of activities. Further, the purpose was also to assess the need of the sports clubs to develop the accessibility of their activities for adults in the county. The future aim of this study is that the results will compose a foundation for an activity directory which will increase the accessibility of different sports clubs and facilitate for individuals who practise some sort of exercise. Because of the limited research on this area, this study could be of interest for individuals, associations as well as for future research. To get the results interviews were carried out with nine different sports clubs and companies. The interviewees all had managing roles and good insights within their respective company. The respondents were asked about their opinions regarding the need of an activity directory and its possible benefits and disadvantages. The results show an interest for the directory from the majority of the respondents and that one of the primary benefits is that it provides marketing for the sports clubs and companies who choose to participate. One disadvantage with the activity directory could be that people with limited access to the Internet will be excluded, but as long as the marketing is good and the design is simple and well structured, the activity directory may have good future prospects.
