    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to to examine what teachers think about visual art and how the learning process in this subject does look like. To answer these issues, I made interviews with five teachers of visual art from different schools, and I examined several examples of pupils’ artworks. The stories of the teachers were analyzed in relation to governing documents and with assumptions from sociocultural theory, postmodernism and pedagogical - aesthetic research as theoretical point of view.

By the qualitative interview method, the observations of the pupil’s artworks, and by the analysis of the interviews with the teachers, I have come to the conclusion that teachers think differently about art but they try to keep themselves in line with the national governing documents. Its affects aspects of disciplines, styles, techniques and medium that is exemplified by the pupil’s art works, and it points out similarities and differences between the pupil’s art works and between the teachers when teaching visual art.

Konst på internet idag: En retorikanalys av konstverksamma organisationers självpresentationer2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study about Art transformation and commodification in the digital age. The study applies a rhetoric analysis with the aim to understand how art sellers, gallery owners and entrepreneurs take part in this transformation process through their websites’ presentation texts ”about us”. The analysis is related to communication theories but it is also inspired by other theories such as Gramsci’s hegemony theory and Bourdieu’s cultural critical theory. The study shows that in an environment of ”Global Communication”, activities that are related to the visual art on the net are strongly influenced by the commodification. Marketers and business managers have a big advantage of this phase of change in Art activities on the net. As senders in a one-way communication process, they use their rhetorical skills in their presentation texts to build identities or to enhance their business, depending on the positions of power they have in the market. They invest in art and artists, in order to expand their businesses and to capture a wider audience of recipients on World Wide Web to get more money and power. The study recommends further research about the Art commodification, preferably from the receiver’s and the artists’ sides to reveal more aspects of the effects of this transformation process in Art and its values.

Collage etnolingüístico en la poesía mapuche2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study has the goal to analyze the strategy used by the Mapuche poets so called collage ethno-linguistic and to reveal how it is used by their authors. Given that we will analyze poems in which its authors are Mapuche, we want to investigate whether their own worldview, culture and religiosity is reflected into the poem.

For this purpose we will analyze three poems written by the Chilean Mapuche poets in order to have the proper overview of their lyrical poetry. Those poems are “Huida”, by Maribel Mora Curriao, “Quila” from Pedro Alonzo Retamal, and “Desde aquí” from the poet Jaqueline Caniguán.  On the other hand we will also inquire into other papers of several researchers that have studied the ethno-literature, such as Iván and Hugo Carrasco Muñoz and the paper written by the researcher Maria Ester Greve  in order to support our investigation.

Key words: ethnolinguistic collage, Maribel Mora Curriao, Pedro Alonzo Retamal, Jaqueline Caniguán, Mapuche poetry, world view, Mapuche religiosity.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Plato´s Republic is maybe the most widely read philosophical work of all times. It is the earliest surviving, systematic utopia in Europe´s history and continues to inspire people today. But who did Plato want to address with his work and why? In this paper I will discuss these issues. My thesis is that Plato wanted to direct his Republic to people, men and women, who have a good character and love wisdom in order to make them to think radically differently from the traditional norms. If these would-be philosophers could challenge the old-fashioned way of seeing things they could take the lead to establish a just society. I will also discuss critically two alternative approaches from other philosophers.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study was conducted with the purpose to investigate how second-generation immigrants with origins from the Middle East use humor sketches published on social media in relation to their identity. The study is analyzed based on postcolonial perspectives and theories such as orientalism, identity and imagined community. The aim is based on how the interviewees experience their identity related to the content shown is the sketches. The method used was qualitative interviews where the results showed that the interviewees found the humor sketches important and meaningful as they functioned as a form of defense mechanism against cultural clashes. Their reasoning was strikingly similar and showed that with the help of the humorsketches, they found a strengthened community and a connection to others who feel as if they are in an ”in-betweenness” as well.

"Vi vinner rättvist": En studie i lokala sportjournalisters hantering av de journalistiska yrkesidealen.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden sports journalism has been critisised among many for lacking professionalism and sports journalists have been accused of being both restricted and biased. Especially in local sports journalism the issue is said to be evenmore prominent.Through a qualitative discourse analysis the main purpose of this essay is to study the standard of objectivity in swedish local sports journalism.Thirty two randomly selected articles written in ten local newspapers after ten games in swedish footballs top divison Allsvenskan were read and analyzed during the study. In relation to the profesional ideals of journalism some major themes of shortcomings were discovered and categorized. The most significant was the lack of hearing both sides. The reporting was very one-sided in a way that most of the time favored the local team. From an objective view questionable reporting was also found when it came to the inclusion and exclusion of certain in-game situations but also in what surrounding circumstances the journalists chose to aim their focus on. Uncertaincies were likewise exposed in the amount of personal opinions being shown by the author.

    Disagreement Lost2021In: Synthese, ISSN 0039-7857, E-ISSN 1573-0964, Vol. 199, no 1-2, p. 1899-1932Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper develops a puzzle about non-merely-verbal disputes. At first sight, it would seem that a dispute over the truth of an utterance is not merely verbal only if there is a proposition that the parties to the dispute take the utterance under dispute to express, which one of the parties accepts and the other rejects. Yet, as I argue, it is extremely rare for ordinary disputes over an utterance’s truth to satisfy this condition, in which case non-merely verbal disputes are extremely rare. After examining various responses to the puzzle, I outline a solution using the framework of truthmaker semantics.

    Gómez-Torrente on reference to ordinary substances2020In: Manuscrito, ISSN 0100-6045, E-ISSN 2317-630X, Vol. 43, no 4, p. 97-107Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

According to the Kripke-Putnam orthodoxy, a term like 'water' refers to samples of the same substance as the items on the basis of which the term was introduced. However, observations due to Needham (2000) and Leslie (2013) cast doubt on the idea that there is a uniquely privileged notion of substance relevant to the determination of reference, in which case it would seem at best indeterminate what the word `water' refers to. In response to this problem, Gómez-Torrente (2019) has argued that there is a privileged notion of substance that plays a role in the determination of reference, namely, the ordinary notion of substance. This paper argues that Gómez-Torrente's proposal is not successful. Contrary to what Gómez-Torrente supposes, there is no uniquely privileged ordinary notion of substance; rather, there are many notions of substance compatible with the meaning of 'substance' none of which seems privileged over the rest.

    Abstract [en]

Young members of minoritized linguistic communities often face a situation of double marginalization. On one hand, many communities have struggled to maintain their languages due to oppression and assimilation politics, which often leads to a language shift. On the other hand, many uoung members also experience a language purism within the community, mostly from older generations, criticizing the young members' linguistic practices and language skills. This paper explores how young Tornedalians, Kvens and Lantalaiset use social media as an arena for metapragmatic reflexions on minority language learning and Meänkieli maintenance. Drawing on data from the social media platform Instagram, this paper examines the role of Meänkieli in young peoples' life and identity. The paper also explores how social media can contribute to create community among young Tornedalians, Kvens and Lantalaiset.

Afrocolombianos: Un retrato estereotipado en dos series televisivas colombianas.2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

Based on the democratic goals and mission in the Swedish curriculum and the rapidly changing media landscape, this study examines how textbooks, for pupils aged 13-15, present the writing of argumentative texts. Using content analysis and Ivanić's six discourses of writing and learning to write as a framework, fundamental aspects are reviewed: the writer, the reader, the media, the function attributed to the argumentative texts, and the writing discourse. The results show that the genre discourse dominates, closely followed by the skills discourse. If the same pattern also can be found in the practice it can be interpreted as a problem in relation to the democratic goals and mission. Furthermore the result depict the writer as a person with simple skills who write about ordinary issues (in contrast to the professional writer who can change major issues). In the textbook the reader is highlighted as important, but the pupil is not provided with any guidance to understand and find the reader. The textbooks also suggest that argumentative writing mainly has a dialogic function. However, this might be an issue in the classroom as writers will encounter difficulties conducting a dialogue with an unknown reader.

Strategisk kommunikation i ideella organisationer: En retorisk analys av hur Världsnaturfonden WWF kommunicerar förtroende i olika kommunikationskanaler2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study has aimed to examine how Världsnaturfonden WWF communicates trust in various communication channels. We also wanted to see if there are any differences in the different channels on how WWF communicates trust. It is a qualitative study that uses critical rhetoric analysis as method. We choose to analyze the communication channels sponsored facebookposts, personalized letters and two sites from WWF:s website. The empirical data has been analyzed with the aid of theories of strategic communication, non-profit organizations, rhetoric and media specificity. The results show that WWF uses various communication strategies to communicate trust in all of the examined channels. The most important aspects of trust is communicated through presenting what WWF:s collected money has contributed to, that the organization appears to be knowledgeable and engaged in the various areas they work for. In all of the channels we have examined, we have also seen that WWF uses a personal address to the reader. In the sponsored facebookposts and in the personalized letters, we find that WWF communicates more trust than on the website by using more emotions. WWF express more gratitude for donors and more concern for the various animals and the environment affected. Other differences we have seen between the channels are that they differ in how they are designed, but these differences are mainly due to different norms relating to the specific channels. This study has contributed with knowledge of how a non-profit organization such as WWF rhetorically communicates trust to different target groups through different communication channels. This study has also contributed to knowledge of the differences and similarities regarding how WWF communicates trust through the three different communication channels.

MAN FÅR LÄRA DEM VARFÖR DE VET SAKER: en kvalitativ studie kring slöjdlärares outtalade hantverksundervisning2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

It is widely recognized that changes in climate have an effect on people all around the world. There is also data supporting the claim that people are affected differently based on their ability (or lack thereof) to handle the imposed risks. The degree of ability can also determine whether adaptation and mitigation measures will be successful. This thesis discusses a few climate justice theories and principles to settle on those that can handle the variety in degrees of imposed risks. Arguments against isolated treatment of greenhouse gas emissions are drawn from discussion of the per capita principle. It is also argued that ideas about justice ought to be included into the theories and principles which guide international agreements. It is also shown that the absence of an account of historical responsibility ignores important considerations. Arguments against the rival account of Posner and Weisbach further strengthens the defended view.

    The Gears of War

The study of states, their expansion and interaction has always been an important part of political history and often involves military as well as economic perspectives. Relations between economic capital and means of coercion is according to Charles Tilly an integral part of the state and the security policies of early modern states included a high degree of resource mobilisation, preparation for and making of war. How were these problems meant to be solved and what really happened? These historical problems are brought together in this thesis to examine the Swedish government's intentions in the form of military and resource strategic objectives, how these were implemented in the form of rules and regulations and how this was followed by the armed forces in reality. By analysing strategical and operational plans, regulatory documents and muster-rolls with the help of Tillys statemaking theories as well as Lars Wedins strategical analysis model, the thesis sets out to define the swedish states' foreign  policy, military doctrine and strategy, compare regulations with reality and evaluate the ties between theory and practice. The study shows that geopolitical factors created demands for a new general military strategy that was based on warfare with higher mobility in the border provinces of the swedish realm. The security policy seems to have been an expression of the unity of the swedish state, however, the conflict between aristocratic and royal interests shows an interesting dynamic within the political system that is characteristic for the period. The resource strategy that supported the developing doctrine of mobile warfare in Sweden was based on a well equipped fleet, a smaller and more manageble baggage train for the infantry and a military storage system that together would enable faster responses, better transport and supply capability and a more agile defence that differed from the previous fortification doctine. The strategy for procuring and maintaining of outfitting and equipment of the infantry was decentralised during the early 1800's and the civil society became more involved in the resource mobilisation. This constituted a nationalisation of resource strategical means that aimed to alleviate the natural economic limitations in Sweden. The muster-rolls of Västerbottens' infantry regiment shows that the regulations were implemented in reality but that a deficient transport capability caused by disrupted supply lines and slow aquisition of new equipment led to a sometimes severe shortage of equipment and uniforms. Apart from the deficiencies there were substantial changes to more practical equipment in line with the mobile military doctrine and security policy of Sweden. In conclusion, a clear connection between political goals, regulatory documents and implemented changes are seen and an organic relationship between intention, regulation and reality. Further investigation of these historical problems, with ample source material and useful theoretic models in a swedish context, is encouraged.

The aim of this essay was to examine the reporting and framing of the coronavirus on DN.se and Aftonbladet.se's front pages, between January 7, 2020 and April 30, 2020. In order to do so, we chose to examine front page teasers on both newspapers front pages online. We define front page teasers as the package of text and pictures on the front page, which then takes the reader to the actual article. We formulated three questions to concretize the aim: How much space is given to the front page teasers about the coronavirus on Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet's front pages, in terms of number, size and location? How do the front page teasers frame the coronavirus on Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet's front pages, regarding to framing and perspectives as well as calming or alarming signals? And, what differences and similarities can be found between Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet’s front page teasers about the coronavirus, regarding to space and shape? The method chosen for this study was a quantitative content analysis, which was supported by theories about news values, media logic and narration, as well as the agenda setting theory and the framing theory. The results of the analysis stated that front page teasers about the coronavirus was given more space on both newspapers’ front pages during the majority of the selected time period, than front page teasers about other events. This could be explained by multiple theories about how threats, risks and crises, as well as sensational news, stand a better chance of making it to the front page, than other news. The analysis also showed that Dagens Nyheter chose to frame the coronavirus based on themes such as healthcare and economical consequences, while Aftonbladet chose a more human perspective. We speculated on how these results could affect the readers and their picture of reality – in this case the coronavirus – and came to the conclusion that Aftonbladet’s readers might feel more of a closeness to the coronavirus, than the readers of Dagens Nyheter. So, regarding to space – both in number and size – as well as theme, actor and signal, but also the newspapers’ own choice of words, our study made it possible for us to see how the “fish flu” gradually turned into a corona crisis.

    A web-based interactive tool for multi-resolution 3d models of a maya archaeological site2011In: 4TH ISPRS INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP 3D-ARCH 2011: 3D VIRTUAL RECONSTRUCTION AND VISUALIZATION OF COMPLEX ARCHITECTURES / [ed] Remondino, F; ElHakim, S, 2011, no W16, p. 23-30Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Continuous technological advances in surveying, computing and digital-content delivery are strongly contributing to a change in the way Cultural Heritage is "perceived": new tools and methodologies for documentation, reconstruction and research are being created to assist not only scholars, but also to reach more potential users (e.g. students and tourists) willing to access more detailed information about art history and archaeology. 3D computer-simulated models, sometimes set in virtual landscapes, offer for example the chance to explore possible hypothetical reconstructions, while on-line GIS resources can help interactive analyses of relationships and change over space and time. While for some research purposes a traditional 2D approach may suffice, this is not the case for more complex analyses concerning spatial and temporal features of architecture, like for example the relationship of architecture and landscape, visibility studies etc. The project aims therefore at creating a tool, called "QueryArch3D" tool, which enables the web-based visualisation and queries of an interactive, multi-resolution 3D model in the framework of Cultural Heritage. More specifically, a complete Maya archaeological site, located in Copan (Honduras), has been chosen as case study to test and demonstrate the platform's capabilities. Much of the site has been surveyed and modelled at different levels of detail (LoD) and the geometric model has been semantically segmented and integrated with attribute data gathered from several external data sources. The paper describes the characteristics of the research work, along with its implementation issues and the initial results of the developed prototype. [GRAPHICS] .

De som kunde kommit före oss: En inblick i den historiska romanen genom en karaktärsanalys av Jan Guillous Brobyggarna och Vilhelm Mobergs emigrantepos.2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this essay I aim to study the concept of the historical novel through a character analysis of four novels by Vilhelm Moberg: UtvandrarnaInvandrarna, Nybyggarna and Sista brevet till Sverige; and one by Jan Guillou: Brobyggarna. These novels all portray characters of great determination and grit, although the ones created by Jan Guillou tend to also have qualities moe commonly associated with superheroes.

To support my thesis, I use Georg Lukács´The Historical Novel, in which he defines what constitutes a well written historical novel. I have also researched how the two authors view their own works, with special emphasis on their claims to write truthfully, since one om Lukács main points is that the historical novel must be — not truthful — but realistic.

In the analysis I compare the characters from the different works with each other to see how they fit into Lukács´ definition of the historical novel. I make a point out of Guillou´s characters being a bit too perfect for them to be realaistic, while Moberg´s characters seem more alive and honest in their quest for a better life. Guillou seems to write his characters as representants of specific historical movements. I then open up for a discussion about the key characteristics of the characters in a historical, and attempt to explain why they have to be written in such a way.

Samkönade äktenskaps vara eller icke vara inom Svenska kyrkan.: En argumentationsanalys av debattartiklar från Kyrkans tidning och Dagens Nyheter.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This master thesis deals with two case studies in environmental archaeology and battlefield archaeology focusing on two major events in the late history of the Swedish coastal town Umeå and its nearby village Sävar. Established in the early 1600's, Umeå was known for its export of timber and import of cereals. The town has suffered from numerous fires, the fire in 1888 being the most devastating. Few written records of the town remain from before the 1900's. The latest war in Sweden's history is documented in historical sources and took place at Krutbrånet, Sävar where the Swedish troops suffered defeat against the russian forces in 1809. The old port in Umeå has not been previously excavated archaeologically and only a small part of the battlefield area at Krutbrånet has been surveyed. Neither of the sites have yet been protected sites under Swedish heritage conservation act. The purpose of these two case studies is to present new research results from these two sites. In the first case study, archaeobotany and soil chemistry methods were used to analyse soil samples from undisturbed cultural layers in a construction trench at the old port of Umeå. A thick burnt layer consisted of charcoal, oats and weeds, suggesting storage and possibly intended as food for horses. Oat and pea were radiocarbon dated to most likely late 1800's which places the burned layer with oats to the big city fire in 1888. The area could have intact cultural layers that are important to investigate for understanding the  unknown history of Umeås old port. The basis for the second case study is the material evidence of lead musket bullets found during a small field survey at Krutbrånet, conducted in 2010. The bullets were studied using X-ray Fluorescence together with spatial analysis to determine if troop nationality could be possible to distinguish based on composition, characteristics and spatial positions. The results revealed bullets  in varied sizes and composed of lead but also alloys of copper, antimony and tin that appear in mixed quantities spread in all the studied areas of the battlefield. Field surveys of uninvestigated areas at Krutbrånet are needed to understand the context of the studied material and of troop formations. Further studies could also be isotope analyses to determine the origins of the oats and bullets.

Nordiska slöjdpedagogers syn på hållbar utveckling som innehåll i slöjdundervisningen2020In: Techne series: Research in sloyd education and crafts science. A, ISSN 1238-9501, E-ISSN 1893-1774, Vol. 27, no 2, p. 64-80Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Enacting the fundamental values in art education2022In: Education and involvment in precarious times: NERA conference 2022. Abstract book / [ed] Michael Dal, School of Education, Univeristy of Iceland , 2022, p. 169-170Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    1. Research topic/aim: The overall purpose of this thesis is to describe and discuss preconditions for theenactment and the construction of fundamental values in art education in secondaryschool.

    2. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework used in this study is a combination of policy enactmenttheory (Ball et al. 2012) and Bernsteins (2000) concepts Classification and Framing. This combination allowed to analyse the influence of context and existing subjecttraditions and teaching practice in art education.

    3. Methodology/research design: The study is based on ethnographic methods, including classroom observations, video recordings and interviews with art teachers and pupils. Three art teachers and36 pupils in grades eight and nine (age 14-16) have participated in the study.

    4. Expected results/findings: The results show that the conditions for policy enactment are created by severalfactors that interact. Together with existing subject traditions and teaching practicesin art education, the unique contextual mix that every school provide creates theconditions for enacting the fundamental values in art education. For example, the artsubject carries an image-making tradition that pushes aside more theoretical syllabuscontent, such as image analysis. The situated context influences the professionalculture and, therefore, they function as a lens for selecting and translating thecurriculum; hence, different groups of pupils receive different democratic education. Also, the school's goal and result management focus on measurable subjectknowledge and therefore marginalise the fundamental values. Together, this makes itchallenging to incorporate fundamental values in subject teaching.

    5. Relevance to Nordic educational research: Democratic education is essential in all Nordic countries, and these results helpexplain why it is not always easy to incorporate the more generic democratic goals inthe subject teaching.

The poster will show a model of how different factors interact as the curriculum isenacted.

Förutsättningar för iscensättning av en ny kursplan i bildämnet2023In: Konferens i pedagogiskt arbete, 2023: book of abstracts, Linköping: Linköping University Electronic Press, 2023, p. 128-128Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

"It will take time": visual arts teachers’ professional freedom in policy enactment2023In: Arts education policy review, ISSN 1063-2913, E-ISSN 1940-4395Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The paper aims to add to what is known about how contextual prerequisites and governance systems affect art teachers’ professional freedom, a topic of global significance. Previous research shows that Visual Arts education has not been aligned with current syllabi. This discrepancy is partly explained by ‘a lag’ in the teachers’ subject conceptions given that visual arts teachers traditionally enjoy considerable professional freedom while designing their teaching. That is only one explanation; in contrast, this article, set in the Swedish educational context, enhances understanding of policy enactment in the visual art subject, with relevance for global educational policies. To understand how contextual conditions and patterns of governance determine the level of teacher autonomy, in-depth semi-structured interviews with ten art teachers in the Swedish 9-year compulsory school were conducted over 10 months in 2022, coinciding with the implementation of a new curriculum. In addition, staff from the National Agency for Education (NAfE) were interviewed, and NAfE materials were analyzed. Employing policy enactment theory, the analysis shows that contextual factors significantly influence the prerequisites of policy enactment. Further, the goals- and results-based management of schools challenges art teachers’ professional freedom as teachers adapt to the principles of governmentality. This, in turn, makes enacting new art policy challenging and time-consuming.

Renegotiating subject content when enacting a new syllabus in art education2022In: Education and involvment in precarious times: NERA conference 2022. Abstract book. / [ed] Michael Dal, Reykjavik: School of Education, University of Iceland , 2022, p. 17-18Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    1. Research topic/aim: This research deals with enacting the art syllabus in the new curriculum (Lgr 22) inthe Swedish compulsory school. In this syllabus, the core content about images thatdeal with norms and values has been expanded and now includes schoolyear onethrough nine. The concept "norm" has been introduced in the art syllabus. Also, theconcept of "visual culture" has a protruding position in Lgr 22 compared to the formercurriculum (Lgr 11). Together, this shows a shift in subject content, which is meant tolead to changes in teaching practice. A change that often is slow and gradual (Åsén,2006). The aim of the study is to increase knowledge about and deepenunderstanding of how subject content is interpreted, renegotiated and takes shape atthe classroom level in the process of enacting a new syllabus.

    2. Theoretical framework: The theoretical point of departure is Ball et al. s' (2012) theory of curriculumenactment. Policy enactment is understood as a complex process where the contexthas a significant influence as different types of policy actors do policy (Ball et al.,2012).

    3. Methodology/research design: Central to the research design is policy ethnography, including observations, interviews, observations, and collection of teaching materials. The study is conductedin primary and secondary public schools and includes art teachers and pupils. Thefirst part of the study, starting spring 2022, consists of interviews with teachers andfocus upon their interpretation of the syllabus. The second part also includesclassroom observations and interviews with pupils.

    4. Expected results/findings: Expected results in the first part of this study will address how teachers interpret thenew syllabus in Lgr22. The analysis will show what influences teachers' interpretationand how they negotiate their understanding of the subject in relation to their subjectconception, professional culture and the school context. Preliminary results frominterviews will be presented at the conference.

    5. Relevance to Nordic educational research: Even though the art subject differs between the Nordic countries (Lindström, 2009),the results of this study are relevant to Nordic educational research as it contributesto the understanding of the process of and factors that influence policy enactment ina Scandinavian school context.

The overall purpose of this thesis is to describe and discuss preconditions for the enactment and the construction of fundamental values in art education in secondary school. The study is based on ethnographic methods, including classroom observations, video recordings and interviews with art teachers and pupils. Three art teachers and 36 pupils in grade eight and nine (age 14-16) have participated in the study. The schools are located in areas of different socio-economic status. Besides interviews, the empirical material consists of observation notes, video and sound recordings, documents and photographs from the observed lessons. In total, 27 lessons were observed and recorded, 20 interviews with teachers and seven interviews with pupils were conducted. The empirical material is analysed with a combination of policy enactment theory (Ball et al. 2012) and concepts form Bernstein (2000, 2003) and Bakhtin (1981, 1986).

The analysis reveals that the conditions for policy enactment are created by several factors that interact. It is impossible to designate a single factor to explain why the enacted curriculum turns out the way it does. The contextual dimensions, such as material context, situated context, professional culture and external context (Ball et al. 2012), constitute a complex and unique contextual mix in every school. Together with existing subject traditions and teaching practices in art education, the unique contextual mix creates the conditions for enacting the fundamental values in art education.

The art subject carries a tradition of image-making that pushes more theoretical syllabus content, such as image analysis, aside. The situated context influences the professional culture and, therefore, they function as a lens for selecting and translating the curriculum. Regardless of teachers' intentionsto enact the fundamental values in art education, the external context can create obstacles. The goal and result management of school leads to a focus on measurable subject knowledge and drive awayother curriculum parts such as the fundamental values, making it challenging to work with fundamental values in Art education.

In conclusion, there are no prerequisites for realising the intentions of the fundamental values as expressed in the curriculum. Despite this, the fundamental values have a given place in Art education. Although, it is not always expressed verbally; instead, it is image-borne.

Applying Cognitive Linguistics: Preposition Acquisition in an ESL Context with Arabic Learners2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Teaching prepositions in the context of English as a foreign language (ESL) can be particularly challenging. The present research explored the ability of Arabic-speaking students to understand and use prepositions and examined the efficacy of using cognitive linguistics to train them on the for and to prepositions. The study was conducted through an online survey, the delivery of a pretest to the willing participants, the supply of the cognitive linguistics activities and traditional training activities, and the delivery of posttests to assess the participants. 16 participants agreed to participate in the study. A comparison of the average values of their pretest and posttest scores revealed that they performed better on the posttests, with the group that took the cognitive linguistics activity showing better improvement. The Mann Whitney U Test showed that the improvements were statistically significant for both groups. The findings demonstrate that cognitive linguistics produces better language acquisition among non-native speakers of English than traditional approaches and should be used in the teaching of English prepositions.

Praktiska och teoretiska examinationsformer2009Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Voy a escuchar el silencio: Att välja låtttexter till undervisningen genom läsbarhetsmetoden2021Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In a classroom context, the readability of a text can be measured in many ways; one of them is to study the set of words and grammar in the text, and decide if they are a part of a student´s linguistic knowledge. This study concentrates on investigating the method for measuring readability when it comes to choosing a text for students learning advanced Spanish. This study also argues for the use of songs and lyrics as a part of the study material in the classroom. Therefore, the readability method will be tested on parts of lyrics from two songs in Spanish. The study will show some factors that can affect the readability of the texts. The study will, based on these factors, discuss semantics, head verbs and syntax.

Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine whether an intervention with the Rydaholms method leads to better decoding skills, improved reading comprehension and increased interest in reading. The participants were the third grade primary school children. A five-week training with the method was performed and children's results in reading speed, decoding and reading comprehension were compared to the pretest results. The interest in reading was measured with a questionnaire prior and after the invention was done. The results showed that the children had improved their decoding but not their reading comprehension. All the children reported a higher level of reading interest after the intervention. The results are discussed in relation to the research favoring training in spelling and decoding as a primary method to improve both decoding and reading comprehension and methods that combine training in spelling and comprehension. The study could show that improved decoding skills do not automatically lead to better reading comprehension due to a short-term memory advantage but training in comprehension strategies is needed. The finding that improved decoding lead to increased interest in reading gives support for the research that claims that decoding skills are fundamental for children's own view on reading.
