    Abstract [en]

This article refects upon the role of adventure, both as a compositional feature and as an ideology, in the Swedish author Kurt Salomonson’s novels. Salomonson is usually labelled a working-class author, and this often tends to implicate a realistic style of writing. The article, however, argues that some of his novels use the genre of the adventure novel in order to launch his theme of taking risks, so as to change one’s social position and to investigate contemporary society. According to Mikhail Bakhtin, the hero of the adventure novel is not biographically determined. His or her actions are not governed by their biography or social position. The adventurer as a character and the genre of the adventure novel are used to look into the different social layers of society, as well as into the world of the workers. This perspective opens up for a more nuanced conception of working-class literature.

    Abstract [en]

    Norrland as Identity and Periphery

In this article I discuss the attempt, on the part of Swedish authors Pelle Molin, Olof Högberg and Gustav Hedenvind-Eriksson, to construct a Norrlandic identity around the turn of the twentieth century. Although Norrland is a part of Sweden, it has often been looked upon as something "other". Historically, there is a long tradition of viewing Norrland as a periphery, and as the great unknown. From the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when Norrland first became a concept to the rest of Sweden, it was as region lacking an identity of its own. Norrland was regarded as an object for the central power of Sweden, a view that might be labelled "colonial". Norrland was fundamentally conceived of as exotic "nature" – that is, as the opposite of culture – due to the fact that it supplied the natural resources which helped to create wealth in Sweden: the forests, the ore fields, and hydropower. The end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th witnessed attempts to construct another Norrland, with a history and a cultural identity of its own. It is particularly in fiction that this different Norrland begins to come into being.

Olof Högbergs Den stora vreden och skapandet av Norrland2015In: Samlaren: tidskrift för svensk litteraturvetenskaplig forskning, ISSN 0348-6133, Vol. 136, 260-286 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article I analyse Olof Högberg’s novel Den stora vreden [The Great Wrath], published in Sweden in 1906. The novel has been regarded as one of the first novels from the northern part of Sweden. I argue that Högberg used the novel in order to invent a cultural identity for Norrland, in much the same way as contemporary postcolonial literature does. Högberg, and other authors from the northern parts of Sweden in the early 20th century, reacted against the exploitation of the north by companies from the south of Sweden. The north had abundant natural resources: big forests, ore fields and great rivers, but was regarded as a wilderness or a wasteland with few inhabitants. In opposition to this view, Högberg wanted to incorporate stories, tales and legends from the north into his novel in order to show that the Norrlandic people had a history; they had an origin and a cultural identity. But Högberg also wanted to create an imagined community, a nation of Norrland, with his novel. To achieve this, he turned to the genre of the adventure novel. His main characters were representatives of different groups in Norrland. There was Svarte-Mickel, representing the common man; there was Emanuel Bredman, a representative of the indigenous Sami people; and there was Mäster-Sara, a representative of the strong woman of the north. The heroes followed the pattern of the adventure novel. They all had to leave their homes and go into the world, but returned in order to resurrect the nation of Norrland. In this way Högberg’s novel was about inventing Norrland as a nation.

The dialogic classroom: Bakhtin and the valuating perspective2017In: LIR.journal, E-ISSN 2001-2489, no 8, 12-23 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article deals with the idea of the dialogic classroom and its influence on the pedagogic discussion in Sweden, especially in the teaching of literature as part of Swedish language education. Through a discussion of Bakhtin’s theory of the dialogic, I argue that it is problematic to construct an opposition between experience-based teaching of Swedish and a more traditional approach that emphasises the literary canon. The teacher’s valuative relationship towards what he or she is teaching is important in order to initiate a dialogue with students, regardless whether the material being taught belongs to the literary canon or to popular literature. It is argued that Bakhtin’s theory has an unrecognized potential for the teaching of literature.
