Developing sports with a children’s rights perspective?: Intentions, methods, and priorities of development projects in local Swedish sports clubs2017Inngår i: European Journal for Sport and Society, ISSN 1613-8171, Vol. 14, nr 3, s. 244-264Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyze the planned development of sport practice regarding children’s rights through project applications from Swedish sports clubs within the Lift for Sport programme. The study on which this paper reports uses data from a large-scale research project that evaluated this sport-for-all programme and is based on an analysis of 2563 applications within five different national sports organizations. Theoretically, the evaluation study draws on programme theories and analyses financially funded development applications made by the sports clubs. The proportion of applications concerning aspects of children’s rights was 2.4% within the following categories: children’s safety in sports, young people’s views, ethics of children’s sports, and prevention of exclusion and dropout from sport. Those applications were further examined regarding which intentions, methods, and priorities sports clubs were aiming to develop children’s sport to be in line with a children’s rights perspective. The methods used to reach the goals were sometimes the same regardless of intention, and, despite the good intentions and some creative methods used for development, applicants seemed to be uncertain about and searching for which relevant methods to use. The findings can be used to inform the discussion on the design of development programmes, policies, and practices to change children’s sport in the framework of children’s rights.

Resisting self-regulation: an analysis of sport policy programme making and implementation in Sweden2015Inngår i: International journal of sport policy and politics, ISSN 1940-6940, Vol. 7, nr 3, s. 391-406Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Political programming of sport has become the new orthodoxy in many countries where the strive for a more healthy and civically engaged population is intertwined with an ambition to encourage and make responsible individuals and organizations for meeting societal goals. Although much effort has been put into studying this phenomenon, there is still a shortage of understanding of how, why and with what results sport policy programmes are made and implemented. To address this shortage this article reports on a study of the largest government intervention in sport in Sweden with the purpose of exploring processes of responsibilization and self-regulation at play in the relationship between the government and sport as well as between sport organizations on different levels. Results show how sport has received a more salient position on the government agenda, where more instrumental goals have been accompanied by increased resources to aid in their attainment. This process has assisted in the ambitions to modernize sports organizations by encouraging development through self-regulation. The sports organizations involved have embraced the new goals and resources. However, instead of self-regulating in the desired direction, each organizational level in the sports system has forwarded the responsibility for development to the next level below. This process has left the sports clubs with the full responsibility of meeting the government goals, a responsibility they have not accepted. Understandings of these phenomena and processes are discussed by pointing to the specific institutional landscape and tradition of Swedish sport.

Educating Parents: A critical encounter between Swedish government parent support and parent’s narratives2011Inngår i: Changing the Future Educating about Gender, Exeter: Exeter University , 2011Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this study is to explore constructions of family and parenthood in Swedish contemporary parent support initiatives. We focus on government policy; municipal support initiatives; media representations of parenthood; parents’ narratives, and online activities. A discourse analytical perspective will guide the study. We draw on notions of how discourses form actions and boundaries in government’s parent support initiatives and in narratives of parents. The governmentality concept will be used to analyse processes of governance at state and individual levels (Foucault 1991). For policy analysis a “What’s the problem represented to be” approach (2009) will be used addressing how problems are constructed in policy, and how representations of problems bring about effects. Since issues of parenthood are saturated by ideas of e.g. gender, sexual orientation and dis-/ability, the study will be informed by theories of social categorizations (Butler 1990/1999; Connell 2009; Young 1997) and how these categories intersect (Crenshaw 1994; Yuval-Davies 2006). Research states Swedish parent support mainly addresses women/mothers (Bremberg,  004). There also seems to be a bias where “parents” are mainly represented by ethnic Swedish, well educated, urban, heterosexual nuclear families (Sarkadi 2009). Since parent education primarily has been studied from a medical perspective, there certainly is a need for educational researchers to study these programs and those involved, from a pedagogical and psychological perspective.

    Co-Teaching in Northern Rural Finnish Schools2018Inngår i: Education in the North, ISSN 0424-5512, Vol. 25, nr 1-2, s. 217-237Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Focusing on a rural municipality in northern Finland, the aim of this study is to investigate educators’ thoughts and experiences with co-teaching. The data from 40 teachers were collected via an electronic questionnaire, and a mixed-methods approach was used. In the quantitative responses, the teachers positioned themselves as spokespeople for co-teaching, even though they had little experience with this teaching method. The written responses were condensed into four main themes: requirements, interpretations, inclusion and joy. Various requirements, such as more time for planning, better facilities to teach in and more training, were required before co-teaching could be executed. However, those who had co-taught expressed joy and improved wellbeing at work compared with their time teaching alone. Finally, the various themes of teachers’ experiences in relation to co-teaching are discussed.

Collaborative Case-Based Virtual Learning in Higher Education: Consultation Case in Special Education2019Inngår i: Journal of Digital Learning in Teacher Education, ISSN 2153-2974Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Collaborative case-based virtual learning was used with special teacher education students from Finland (N = 94) and Sweden (N = 59). The case was about consultation and was tailor-made to fit their studies. The case was used as a bridge between theoretical and practical studies, and consisted of videos of an imaginary school, which proceeded in the form of a narrative. The goals for the students were practicing challenging situations and critical thinking in small groups—a kind of artificial experience building. After completing the case, the students responded to a questionnaire about it. They evaluated the case positively as a new, inspiring method. Only a few critical comments were received, such as that there was too little time for deep discussion. The method of virtual learning seems to be a good, inspiring way to study in higher education, as an alternative to lectures. Other topics these students would like to study in a similar way were issues related to interaction and new professional skills, such as co-teaching or discussions with parents. The different aspects of this kind of virtual collaborative learning are discussed.

Becoming a special educator: Finnish and Swedish students' views of their future profession2015Inngår i: Education Inquiry, ISSN 2000-4508, E-ISSN 2000-4508, Vol. 6, nr 1, s. 25-51Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, we discuss the views of 117 special education student teachers related to their oncoming profession in the framework of ecological theory. Together, 68 students from Sweden (26 special teachers and 41 SENCo students) and 49 from Finland responded to a questionnaire. We compared the respondents’ thoughts about their future work content, the focus areas of special education and inclusion. According to the expectations, the main task for these future special educators is to work with pupils and adults at school. The focus areas of their future work included co-operation and consultation, more so in Sweden. In addition, excellent interaction skills were central. The Swedish respondents supported full inclusion to a greater extent than the Finnish respondents. Finally, no critical aspects of resource allocation or conditions to ensure the child’s right to adequate support within the existing school systems were emphasised by the respondents. The results and the differences among the various respondents are discussed.

Bending mainstream definitions of sport, gender and ability: Representations of wheelchair racers2008Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Inspired by feminist post-structural thinking and with a discourse analytic approach, this study’s main theme is gendered identity, disability and sport. It consists of four separate, but interrelated, empirical studies and focuses on two research questions. Firstly, how do female and male wheelchair racers construct and perform their identities? Secondly, how are female and male wheelchair racers represented in Swedish sports media? To answer the research questions, semi-structured interviews with wheelchair racers, and a critical analysis of sports media texts from the Paralympics in Sydney, 2000 have been conducted. In this dissertation the composition of unwritten regulations produced by the media texts, that shaped the practice of wheelchair athletes was conceptualized as the discourse of able-ism. Findings indicate that the sports media texts constructed the subject of ‘disabled sportsman/sportswoman’, which indirectly reproduced the conception of a copy and not an original. The exclusion was, however, concealed and neutralized through the regulation and differentiation that the discourse of able-ism legitimated. Although sports media still seems to reinforce negative stereotypes of disabled athletes, the wheelchair racers themselves are challenging the gender, sport and disability discourses and establishing new ways of being physically powerful and excellent in and outside the sports arena. In fact, when the athletes got the opportunity to make their voices heard in media, they re-dressed the twisted picture of wheelchair racing as passive rehabilitation training into elite sport. Consequently, it seems that wheelchair racing and its high status in disability sports empowers both male and female racers which increases their possibility to be represented as ‘real’ sportsmen and sportwomen. Finally, although, the athletes have shown that wheelchair racing has a given place in modern sport, ‘being able’ as an athlete and being a gendered individual are still strongly connected to the appearance and performance of the un-impaired body.

    Abstract [sv]

Experiences and Perceptions of Young Adults with Physical Disabilities on Sports2015Inngår i: Social Inclusion, ISSN 2183-2803, E-ISSN 2183-2803, Vol. 3, nr 3, s. 39-50Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

People with disabilities seldom get a chance to voice their opinions on their sport experiences. A deeper understanding of the context-related experiences of sport is a prerequisite for teachers and leaders to be able to provide adequate, inclusive and meaningful activities. The aim of this qualitative case study was to examine how young people with disabilities made sense of sport, within both the compulsory school system and the voluntary sports movement. The study involved 10 young adults (aged 16 to 29 years) with disabilities, five males and five females. All the participants had rich experiences of sport. An inductive approach to qualitative content analysis of semi-structured interviews was used to enable individuals to explain and give meaning to their experiences of sport including those pertaining to gender and inclusion. The findings illustrated that dominating gender and ability norms influenced the interviewees’ understanding of themselves in relation to sport; as a consequence, some of the female interviewees had a more diverse, sometimes contradictory experience of sport than the male interviewees. The basic premise of this study is that researchers can develop more insightful understandings of inclusion by studying the subjective meanings that are constructed by people with disabilities in their sport experiences.

    Abstract [sv]

”What You Can't Learn from Cartoons: Or, How to go Hunting After Watching Bambi” är titeln på ett av bidragen i Nathan Kowalskis antologi Hunting: In Search of the Wild Life, som ingår i Wiley Blackwells serie Philosophy for Everyone.

    Abstract [en]

This paper focuses upon the meaning of being a female wheelchair racer at elite level. The paper is based on one-to-one semi-structured interviews with five female wheelchair racers, who all competed in the Paralympic Games 2000. This paper highlights the complexity and in some respects contradictive aspects of the ways in which elite female wheelchair athletes construct their identities. In this study the Paralympic Games are applied as a backdrop through which the athletes and their experiences are contemplated. Overall the research suggests that the interviewees cannot be contemplated as passive objects unable to affect their own lives. Rather they seem to be well aware of the logic of the discursive game and thereby manifest their independency through action and resistance. Thus they counteract people’s misperceptions by asserting their abilities as wheelchair racers.

    Abstract [en]

Drawing on the Foucauldian concept of governmentality and with a discourse analytic approach, the purpose of this study was to describe and analyse how wheelchair basketball (WCB) players governed themselves in relation to the dominant discourses of sport, gender and disability. This study was based on semi-structured interviews with 12 men and 6 women with and without classified impairment. The findings illustrated how governing operates in the micro-context of WCB and how the athletes were constituted at the intersection between technologies of power and technologies of the self. On the one hand, they were categorized according to a classification system by which the athletes were organized into competitive classes based upon sport-specific tests. On the other, they were taking up and rehearsing narratives about themselves in terms of normality. Finally, the results have shown how male and female WCB athletes take up and resist predominant sport, gender and disability discourses and how they govern themselves in relation to such discourses. The results of the study also illustrate how the workings of power were differentiated within the WCB context and how the sport and gender discourses provided instructions on how to become the desired ideal.

    Abstract [sv]

The relationship between physical activity and self-efficacy in children with disabilities2018Inngår i: Sport in Society: Cultures, Media, Politics, Commerce, ISSN 1743-0437, E-ISSN 1743-0445, Vol. 21, nr 1, s. 50-63Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this study is to investigate whether self-efficacy in children with disabilities could be strengthened through targeted and adapted physical activities led by specially educated leaders. Children and Youth Physical Self-Perception Profile (CY-PSPP) scale were used. The study includes 45 children of 8–14 years of age with different types of impairments. The children participated in training sessions twice a week and tried out 13 different physical activities during eight months. The median in this study of total self-efficacy was 104 points, which can be compared to median points varying between 100 and 107 in previous studies based on children without disabilities. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant increase of the means in four out of six different domains of self-efficacy before and after the study was carried out. Key findings indicated that this model is successful in strengthening the children’s self-efficacy and that their perceived self-efficacy was equal to that of children without disabilities.
