    Abstract [en]

    Surveys reveal that the majority of innovation projects do not achieve their goals and waste resources. Notorious examples are the National Health Service's National Programme for IT project and many multibillion European Union funded projects. Academics and practitioners suggest that this failure is because conventional project management methods fail to capture the serendipitous, evolutionary and experimental nature of complex innovation projects. Results from previous research based on European Union healthcare innovation projects revealed that we need to develop a robust method based on the systems thinking construct of equifinality to understand and manage complex causality in projects. This paper critically evaluates how equifinality has been used in management research, the reasons for the discontinuous application of systems thinking and equifinality and examines the ways to embed equifinality in project management, arguing how holism, control, boundary management and causal complexity are critical to the application of system thinking in project management.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper investigates the types of policy instruments responsible for the success of policy implementation through projects. Based on evidence from 12 comparative multiple case-studies, the paper provides an analytical insight from real practice on how and why different types of instruments lead to either successful or unsuccessful projects. In particular, the key finding is that in order for projects to implement policy successfully, policy instruments have to be designed based on specific systems thinking constructs related to flexibility. The findings provide the crucial but missing holistic conceptual direction for the development of implementation theory, which needs to overcome conceptual fragmentation and polarization. The findings also provide the insight as to how instruments really function which is essential to policy makers and project managers involved in public innovation programs. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd.     There are several approaches to study innovation. Systems Theories use analysis of the functions of their elements (subsystems) and their relations. A systemic theory like Triple Helix is based on the premises that relations between the policy, academia and industry subsystems are the means of production and utilization of innovation, and are also the means of drafting infrastructures to base unique networks of hybrid organizations like projects to deliver innovation. The question is how systemic relations are defined and conceptualized in the project literature and whether we can enhance our understanding of innovation systems by mapping dynamic interactions and causality in relating.

    This paper illuminates systemic relating as practiced between policy and projects in the EU innovation system. In order to do this, it is important to focus on a specific relational aspect ofthe relation between these actors and to produce a detailed mapping of their interactive dynamics. The paper studies how 14 innovation projects relate with the implementation part of EU policy. The results are organized in relational maps displaying the dynamic interaction between policy and projects. Based on these maps a causal flowchart is abstracted to explain policy-project systemic relations, filling explanatory gaps in both the Triple Helix and project networks literatures. According to the findings, policy implementation instruments need to be redesigned since they have a restrictive influence upon the management of the innovation project and specifically upon the management of change and of internal/external project relations.

    Strategizing through urban spaces: materializing a capital of culture2013Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

    The question in this paper is how strategies concerned with the development of the urban environment and economy create 'boundary spaces', that are physical but also social and mental, in which people translate, enact and materialize these strategies. Specifically, our study investigates the materialization of an urban strategy within the context of a development-cultural initiative by using a strategy-as-practice perspective enriched by narrative analysis. The narrative approach contributes to our understanding of how the social and material are successively entangled through urban spaces and weaved together and translated in praxis, practices and by practitioners. The 'boundary spaces' leave a clear mark in the townscape and aims to influence the ways of life in the city by outlining how the future could be built, since they become an interface transiting cultural, economic and social boundaries.

    Materializing urban design through boundary spaces2015Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper involves an exploration of how architecture, landscape and construction spaces contribute in urban design by providing incentives for interaction and emergence of collaborative ventures during a large cultural development initiative. The paper contains an analysis of how spaces becomes boundary mechanisms facilitating the translation of a cultural vision. By elaborating on ‘boundary spaces’ to explain the materialization of an urban strategy we use a praxeological outlook as it is framed in the strategy-as-practice literature. When we more closely delves into how spaces can be set in motion and become generative platforms we use the notion of action nets. Methodologically, the paper investigates how such strivings are articulated, planned and implemented in a local context by using a narrative approach comprised by analyses of narrative infrastructures. By mediating different layers of interpretation, boundary spaces turn into artifacts exceeding strategic projections.
