    Collections as one-and-many—on the nature of numbers2015Inngår i: Grazer Philosophische Studien, ISSN 0165-9227, E-ISSN 1875-6735, Vol. 91, nr 1, s. 17-58Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Peter Simons has been rather alone in the modern philosophy of mathematics to argue that the natural numbers should be regarded as properties of multitudes or collections. This paper, however, sides with Simons, but it modifies his property view by adding the notion of imposed collection boundaries and accepting fictional collections. Although partly inspired by the Husserl of Philosophy of Arithmetic, Simons dismisses Husserl's talk of psychological acts of collective combination, but this paper saves them by dressing them in modern cognitive clothes. Hereby, a reasonable partially constructivist notion of the natural numbers emerges.

    Constitution as a relation within mathematics2013Inngår i: The Monist, ISSN 0026-9662, E-ISSN 2153-3601, Vol. 96, nr 1, s. 87-100Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The author proposes a theory of constitution as applied to mathematics. For constitutional relations to exist, the concept of colocation (CR) in mathematics, in areas such as geometry or topography, should be accepted. The relations of mathematical constitution to material, perceptual and property constitution are also expounded.

    Mathematical vectors and physical vectors2009Inngår i: Dialectica, ISSN 0012-2017, E-ISSN 1746-8361, Vol. 63, nr 4, s. 433-447Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

From a metaphysical point of view, it is important clearly to see the ontological difference between what is studied in mathematics and mathematical physics, respectively. In this respect, the paper is concerned with the vectors of classical physics. Vectors have both a scalar magnitude and a direction, and it is argued that neither conventionalism nor wholesale anti-conventionalism holds true of either of these components of classical physical vectors. A quantification of a physical dimension requires the discovery of ontological order relations among all the determinate properties of this dimension, as well as a conventional definition that connects the number one and (in case of vector quantities) mathematical unit vectors to determinate spatiotemporal physical entities. One might say that mathematics deals with numbers and vectors, but mathematical physics with scalar quantities and vector quantities, respectively. The International System of Units (SI) distinguishes between basic and derived scalar quantities; if a similar distinction should be introduced for the vector quantities of classical physics, then duration in directed time ought to be chosen as the basic vector quantity. The metaphysics of physical vectors is intimately connected with the metaphysics of time. From a philosophical-historical point of view, the paper revives W. E. Johnson's distinction 'determinates-determinables' and Hans Reichenbach's notion of 'coordinative definition'.

Metrological thinking needs the notions of parametric quantities, units and dimensions2010Inngår i: Metrologia, ISSN 0026-1394, E-ISSN 1681-7575, Vol. 47, nr 3, s. 219-230Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The paper introduces a distinction between true metric and parametric quantities, units and dimensions. It claims in its first part that these distinctions shed important light both on the base quantity amount of substance and VIM's definitions of kind of quantity and quantity dimension. The second part is devoted to the unit one, and it claims that this unit must be regarded as a parametric unit, but also that it is not as needed as has been thought. The third part takes for granted that both the mole and the unit one are parametric units, and it argues that, for pedagogical reasons, the mole should be exchanged for the unit one, and the parametric quantity amount of substance be renamed as 'elementary entities'.

    Scattered Exemplification and Many-Place Copulas2013Inngår i: Axiomathes, ISSN 1122-1151, E-ISSN 1572-8390, Vol. 23, nr 2, s. 235-246Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Can there be relational universals? If so, how can they be exemplified? A monadic universal is by definition capable of having a scattered spatiotemporal localization of its different exemplifications, but the problem of relational universals is that one single exemplification seems to have to be scattered in the many places where the relata are. The paper argues that it is possible to bite this bullet, and to accept a hitherto un-discussed kind of exemplification relation called 'scattered exemplification'. It has no immediate symbolic counterpart in any Indo-European natural language or in any so far constructed logical language. In order to remedy this, a notion called 'many-place copula' is introduced, too.

    The basic distinctions in Der Streit2013Inngår i: Semiotica, ISSN 0037-1998, E-ISSN 1613-3692, Vol. 194, s. 137-157Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The paper presents Ingarden's views on what he calls "modes of being" ("ways of existence") and "existential moments"; the latter being constitutive parts of the former. Mainstream analytic philosophy has been dominated by the view that "existence" can mean only existence simpliciter. Ingarden, on the other hand, discerns four possible modes of being, one of which is of special interest to semiotics: purely intentional being. It is of relevance for the ontological understanding not only of texts, but also of pictures and other sign-related entities. At the end, an extrapolated Ingardenian semiotic triangle is presented.

    The ideal as real and as purely intentional: Ingarden-based reflections2013Inngår i: Semiotica, ISSN 0037-1998, E-ISSN 1613-3692, Vol. 194, s. 21-37Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The paper takes its departure from Ingarden's distinctions between four different main modes of being: absolute, extratemporal, real, and purely intentional. It introduces a distinction between two kinds of ideal entities: impurely ideal and purely ideal. Of the former kind are universals, and of the latter numbers; Ingarden regards both as existing in the extratemporal mode. It is then discussed whether Ingarden, and many others, has fallen prey to a mode illusion; and that, in fact, the impurely ideal entities exist in the real mode and the purely ideal in the purely intentional mode of being. The answers are weakly affirmative. On these presuppositions a concept of "mixed intentional object" is introduced. It seems to be of importance for how to understand numerical scales and the development of science.

    Abstract [en]

It is argued that temperature is a mind-independent emergent quality that supervenes on the kinetic energy of molecules and vibrating atoms. That is, temperature cannot be reduced to sensations of temperature, to a social-conceptual construction, or to kinetic energy.
