A very complex criterion of fixedness: Non-compositionality2008In: Phraseology: An interdisciplinary perspective, Amsterdam: John Benjamins Publishing Company , 2008, 1, p. 81-93Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The terminology used in definitions of different types of fixed expressions (such as idioms, locutions, proverbs etc.) is complex and sometimes ambiguous. Within the field of phraseology, it is therefore subject to discussion. This chapter deals with the complexity of the notion of non-compositionality. Non-compositionality is a criterion that often appears in definitions of fixed expressions. It will be shown that there are four dichotomies of particular interest within the very notion of non-compositionality. These dichotomies are: motivation/ non-motivation, transparency/opacity, analysability/unanalyzability and literal/figurative meaning. Other notions of relevance to non-compositionality, such as common meaning, prototypicality, salience and frequency as well as encyclopedic compositionality will also be described and problematized. Finally, the notions of partial compositionality, holistic or atomistic compositionality, and lexical content or grammatical form, all describing different aspects of compositionality, will be evoked, to further show the complexity of this criterion of fixedness.

Critères de figement: L’identification des expressions figées en français contemporain2004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Although there are units larger than the word in language, linguists have not been able to agree on a definition of these units. This study examines a variety of notions, relevant in the study of ”fixed” or ”frozen” expressions in contemporary French. Criteria such as memorization, unique context, non-compositionality, marked syntax, lexical blocking and grammatical blocking are analyzed in detail. A closer look at them reveals that in fact only one of them, lexical blocking, is both necessary and sufficient in the description of a fixed expression. The other criteria are, however, also important to the notion of ”fixedness”. It may well be that the criteria that have often been proposed in linguistic literature would benefit from being organized in a family resemblance rather than being used as necessary and sufficient conditions.

Her mother and his hand?: A study of possessives and nouns in Bridget Jones's Diary and fan fiction2009In: Codex and Code: Aesthetics, Language and Politics in an Age of Digital Media / [ed] Berkesand, Peter, Linköping: Linköping university electronic press , 2009, p. 239--257Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The interdisciplinary project "Cyber Echoes" analyses fan fiction, texts written by fans who use characters, places and themes from a source text, place them in a context they construct, and publish the texts on the Internet. One part of this project is linguistically oriented, and sets out to examine the language of a source text (a novel, a tv-series, a movie etc.) and the texts written by fans. This is where this paper is initiated. Is is also inspired by a Danish article by Scheuer (1995, english title: ‘His wife and her breasts’), who has made a quantitative study of the possessive pronouns in the dictionary "Den danske ordbog" (‘The Danish Dictionary’). What is interesting is of course not the pronouns themselfs, but rather what follows. "His" followed by a certain noun tells us something about male ownership, while what follows after "her" shows some relation between certain objects/ phenomena and women. While such a study can be interesting in itself, this paper aims to compare a source text – in this case Bridget Jones's diary by Helen Fielding – with some fantexts that take place in the Bridget Jones universe. The object of the study is the nouns that follow the possessive pronouns, and the focus is to detect similarities and differences in the texts with a gender aspect in mind.

Quand une publication religieuse devient le film « Citizen Kane »: Examination de la traduction des noms propres à travers Buffy contre les vampires2015In: Actes du XIXème congrès des romanistes scandinaves: Actes ROM Reykjavík 2014 / [ed] Sigrún Á. Eiríksdóttir, 2015Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on the translation of proper names in six epi- sodes of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The study shows that in most cases, in translations into French, the proper names are replaced, in a few examples by a generalisation (Neiman Marcus > ma boutique préférée), but mostly by an adaptation of some kind (with a cup of Bovril > dans mon lit). Despite omissions and adaptations that differ dramatically from the original version, the translation offers, in almost every example, an equivalent to the original that transfers the main idea to the French-speaking audi- ence. This is not to say that nothing is being lost in translation – in fact many things are being lost, such as certain qualities that pertain to the protagonists as well as associations to exact references.   The results show that proper names do get translated (contrary to the opinion of some researchers). Furthermore, some of them seem not only to refer to specific individuals, but to actually carry mean- ing, if only by association.
