    Background: Infant mortality rate (IMR) can be elevated due to suboptimal breastfeeding. In Cameroon, IMR is 63/1000 live births. Breastmilk contains all essential nutrients for a newborn. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends breastmilk to be the only thing ingested during the first six months of life. In order to promote breastfeeding more knowledge on social and cultural factors is requested.

    Objective: To describe infant feeding practices in Cameroon and to explore aspects influencing infant feeding among mothers from different socioeconomic groups in Cameroon.

    Method: The study was conducted in rural and urban areas in Cameroon, Africa. Data was collected through four nominal group interviews with a total of 30 women, with infants aged 0-12 months. In order to know their socioeconomic standard (SES), background questionnaires were filled in for each attending woman.

    Results: Obstacles within the areas of practical aspects, health conditions and social aspects influenced the nutrition of the infant. The degree of influence varied according to the level of SES and area of habitat (rural or urban).

    Conclusion: The mothers in our study were positive towards breastfeeding and knowledge of the recommendations was good. However few mothers complied with them. Three areas influencing infant nutrition were identified: practical conditions, health conditions and social setting. Consequently, the main problem is not simply lack if information about the recommendations, but the possibility to implement them.
