    Abstract [en]

    Title:

A literature study in the colors of the rainbow – homo- and bisexual people’s experiences of encounters in healthcare.

    Background:

How you are being treated is an essential part in healthcare and a major reason for how patients experience care and nursing. The heteronorm in society may affect the attitudes and responses of healthcare personnel, which can lead to homosexual and bisexual persons being invisible in health care.

    Aim:

The aim of the study was to describe homo- and bisexual’s experiences of the encounters with healthcare professionals in healthcare settings.

    Method:

A literature study with fourteen qualitative scientific articles was analyzed with the inspiration of content analysis.

    Result:

Homosexual and bisexual people describe experiences of being treated as they are, to be treated with respect and to be acknowledges in their sexuality, but also experiences of meeting heterosexism in healthcare, meeting discriminatory attitudes and to be assumed to be heterosexual.

    Conclusion:

Homosexual and bisexual persons experience both satisfactory and unsatisfactory encounters with healthcare professionals in healthcare. This is because it is both in the community and in healthcare lack of knowledge and stigma surrounding these people. In order to raise awareness about homo- and bisexual persons, there is a need for extended information in education for healthcare professionals. Continued research involving these people should focus on men as the majority of studies concern women.
