Collage etnolingüístico en la poesía mapuche2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study has the goal to analyze the strategy used by the Mapuche poets so called collage ethno-linguistic and to reveal how it is used by their authors. Given that we will analyze poems in which its authors are Mapuche, we want to investigate whether their own worldview, culture and religiosity is reflected into the poem.

For this purpose we will analyze three poems written by the Chilean Mapuche poets in order to have the proper overview of their lyrical poetry. Those poems are “Huida”, by Maribel Mora Curriao, “Quila” from Pedro Alonzo Retamal, and “Desde aquí” from the poet Jaqueline Caniguán.  On the other hand we will also inquire into other papers of several researchers that have studied the ethno-literature, such as Iván and Hugo Carrasco Muñoz and the paper written by the researcher Maria Ester Greve  in order to support our investigation.

Key words: ethnolinguistic collage, Maribel Mora Curriao, Pedro Alonzo Retamal, Jaqueline Caniguán, Mapuche poetry, world view, Mapuche religiosity.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is based on Kågeträskdagboken, a peasant diary written by sisters Greta and Lovisa Dahlqvist near Skellefteå in northern Sweden between 1981 and 1901. The research has sought to establish whether centripetal or centrifugal forces determine the orthographical choices Greta and Lovisa make in their writing as well as what kind of impact these forces have on these authors’ linguistic identification. When centripetal forces are at play, people tend to write in a way that agrees with conventions and standardised language which means that orthographical patterns are applied. Centrifugal forces move away from centring institutions and apply heterographic patterns that challenge a language’s norms and conventions. Research in this thesis was conducted using a variety of orthographic variables and meticulously reviewing the source material. After gathering the data, a lengthy process of analysis, interpretation, and compilation began. Based on the results, it is apparent that both centripetal and centrifugal forces influence the linguistic choices of the writers, as evidenced by the diary’s prevalent orthographic and heterographic spelling patterns. One further finding is that these forces are having a cumulative impact on the writers, creating an identification linguistically with both their local dialect, skelleftemål, and the standardised written language of Swedish.

Gutamål: Ett kulturarv att vårda eller ett vardagsspråk att nyttja?2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Copies of Filip Stanislavov’s Abagar (Rome, 1651)2015In: Scripta & e-Scripta, ISSN 1312-238X, Vol. 14–15, p. 63-71Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The article discusses the currently available information on the extant copies of Filip Stanislavov’s Abagar, printed in Rome by the Propaganda Fide in 1651. Starting from Božidar Rajkov’s 1979 edition, which lists fifteen known copies and their presumed location, the article offers information on several copies that are not reported by Rajkov. These include copies in London, Paris, and Uppsala, the latter in the form of a scroll. In addition, the current location of most of the earlier known copies has been verified, and new information on a number of copies is presented: for example, the copy formerly located in Brussels is currently preserved at the Bibliothèque Diderot in Lyon, whereas the two German copies seem to have been lost.

    Abstract [en]

The article aims to describe some of the new approaches within Early Slavic studies that have become available due to the recent appearance of on-line library catalogs, public repositories, social media networks, and digital surrogates of medieval Slavic manuscripts and early printed books. The changing opportunities and challenges within this new digital context are demonstrated through short presentations of a few projects within Swedish Early Slavic studies, including the Novgorodiana Stockholmiensia project and the project Digitalised Descriptions of Slavic Cyrillic Manuscripts and Early Printed Books in Swedish Libraries and Archives.

Domestication and Foreignization in Russian Translations of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland2012In: Domestication and Foreignization in Translation Studies / [ed] Hannu Kemppanen, Marja Jänis, Alexandra Belikova, Berlin: Frank & Timme, 2012, p. 79-100Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In chapter 2 of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Alice tries to talk to a Mouse, but does not receive an answer: "'Perhaps it doesn't understand English,' thought Alice. 'I dare say it's a French mouse, come over with William the Conqueror.'". Accordingly, Alice addresses the Mouse in French: "Où est ma chatte?". Russian translators of Alice have translated this sequence in different ways – for example, in Vladimir Nabokov's translation (1923), which is often considered a typical example of a domesticated translation, the Mouse does not understand Russian. The mouse is probably French and the reason that it is in the same place as Anya (Alice) might be that it has stayed behind (in Russia?) after the retreat of Napoleon (in the 1812 war between France and Russia), and Alice speaks to the Mouse in French: "Ou est ma chatte?". On the basis of an analysis of examples of Russian and other translations, the present contribution will try to problematize the concepts domestication and foreignization, applying them not only to the translation of "domestic" source text elements, but also to source text elements that can be seen as "foreign".

Early printed Church Slavonic Psalters in Swedish collections2021In: Славянски текстове и традиции: сборник в чест на Катрин Мери Макробърт = Slavonic texts and traditions : in honour of Catherine Mary MacRobert / [ed] Svetlina Nikolova, Ralph Cleminson, Veselka Zhelyazkova, Margaret Dimitrova, Sofia: Cyrillo-Methodian Research Centre , 2021, p. 161-168Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article presents 29 printed Church Slavonic Psalters from the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries currently preserved at Uppsala University Library and other Swedish repositories. Approximately half of the books were printed in Moscow, whereas the remaining books were printed in Kiev, Lviv, Vilna and other important printing centres during this period. The Swedish collections of early printed Church Slavonic Psalters are not impressive when it comes to numbers, but they offer insight in the early spread of Cyrillic printed books outside their countries of origin as well as in an important period in the history of book collecting in northern Europe.

    Abstract [en]

This article describes four volumes comprising more than twenty titles printed by the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide in Rome during the seventeenth century. The volumes, originally owned by Johan Gabriel Sparwenfeld (1655–1727), were donated to Uppsala University Library in the beginning of the eighteenth century and are still included in the collection of this library. The titles include alphabets and other works in Armenian, Arabic, Georgian, Hebrew, Persian, etc., as well as five Slavic publications printed with Cyrillic and Glagolitic letters: Azbukividnêk slovinskiĵ (1629), Ispoviedaonik sabran iz pravoslavniech naučitelia (1630), Ispravnik za erei ispovidnici (1635), Ispovedanie pravoslavnoe very (1648) and, perhaps the most spectacular, a copy of Filip Stanislavov’s Abagar (1651) in the form of a scroll.

Ljudlikhet och betydelselikhet i flerspråkiga toponymer2009In: Namn i flerspråkiga och mångkulturella miljöer: Handlingar från NORNA:s 36:e symposium i Umeå 16–18 november 2006, Umeå, 2009, p. 57-64Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The present article discusses toponyms in different languages referring to the

same geographical location, making a distinction between similarity in

sound (phonetic adaptation, name quotation, etc.) and similarity in sense

(name translation, etc.). In the latter case, following Coates (2005), a

distinction is made between semantic reference, onymic reference, and

apparent etymological sense. The short theoretical introduction is illustrated

with examples from bilingual or multilingual areas such as Southern Austria

(Kärnten—with German and Slovenian place-names) and, particularly,

Hong Kong, which exhibits an intricate interplay between two varieties of

Chinese—Cantonese and Mandarin—and English, where, due to the funda-

mental differences between the Chinese and English writing systems,

particular attention is paid to the different Romanization methods for

    Chinese.

    Abstract [en]

The article offers an identification and short description of thirty-four earlier unidentified printed leaves with Cyrillic text currently preserved at the Swedish National Archives in Stockholm. The leaves belong to three Cyrillic incunabula editions printed in Cracow in the 1490s: a Horologion, a Lenten Triodion, and a Festal Triodion. They constitute, to the best of our knowledge, the first Swedish Cyrillic incunabula fragments described. The leaves arrived in Uppsala as filling in the binding of a copy of Apuleius Asinus Aureus. The copy was taken as war booty in Poland in the 1620s, and the leaves were later transferred to the National Archives.

Slavic alphabets and languages in publications by the Propaganda Fide during the 17th and 18th centuries2019In: Slavic alphabets and identities / [ed] Sebastian Kempgen, Vittorio Springfield Tomelleri, Bamberg: University of Bamberg Press , 2019, p. 1-27Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The paper discusses the Glagolitic, Cyrillic, and Latin orthographies of the Slavic books published by the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide in Rome during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Through a comparison of eight versions of the Slavic text of the Apostles' Creed, the specific features of the respective orthographies are analysed in a chronological perspective. In addition, cross-scriptal comparisons of three editions of Robert Bellarmine's Nauk karstjanski kratak (published in the Glagolitic alphabet in 1628, in the Cyrillic alphabet in 1629, and in the Latin alphabet in 1633) and of the parallel Glagolitic and Cyrillic texts of Matej Karaman's biscriptal Bukvar (1753) are made. As the analysis shows, all texts exhibit a clear development from orthographies reflecting Central South Slavonic linguistic features to orthographies that show influence of East Slavic orthographic models. These tendencies are most pronounced in the Glagolitic and Cyrillic texts, whereas the orthography of the Latin-script texts seems to be more stable.

The article includes as an appendix a preliminary check-list of Slavonic books published by the Propaganda Fide during the period 1627–1791.

    Abstract [en]

In 1784 the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide in Rome published a unique edition to celebrate the visit of King Gustav III of Sweden (1746–1792). The book contains a poem by Gudmund Jöran Adlerbeth praising the Swedish king in forty-six different languages, including seven translations into Slavic languages (Bulgarice, Dalmatice, Illyrice, Polonice, Russice, Ruthenice, Serviane) printed in three different alphabets: Latin, Glagolitic, and Cyrillic. The present paper offers a description of some linguistic features of the different Slavic texts and attempts an analysis of how these features relate to the respective language designations and script systems. Through a comparison with other polyglot editions from the late sixteenth to the early nineteenth centuries, the Slavic texts are put in a broader perspective, and their relationship to the history of Church Slavonic is discussed.

Types of Books and Types of Records: A Short Presentation of the CGS Database of Cyrillic and Glagolitic Books and Manuscripts in Sweden2014In: Scripta & e-Scripta, ISSN 1312-238X, Vol. 13, p. 9-24Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The article presents some of the results of the project Digitalised Descriptions of Slavic Cyrillic manuscripts and early printed books in Swedish libraries and archives (2010–2013), focussing on the online database Cyrillic and Glagolitic Books and Manuscripts in Sweden (CGS), which contains descriptions of more than 600 items (manuscripts, manuscript fragments, and printed books) located in over twenty different repositories in sixteen Swedish cities. Mainly, the article discusses the description structure of the c. 400 printed books, belonging to some 300 different editions. Most of the books are printed or written in only the Cyrillic script, but there are also several Glagolitic printed books. The collections also include a few biscriptal editions, as well as a number of “non-Slavic” books with certain sections printed in the Cyrillic or Glagolitic script: Leonhard Thurneysser’s Melitsah (1583), Adam Bohorič’s Arcticæ horulæ succisivæ (1584), the book presented to the Swedish king Gustav III at his visit to Rome in 1784, etc. The majority of the described books are printed in Moscow, Kiev and other Slavic cultural centers, but the database also includes books printed in areas not dominated by Cyrillic or Glagolitic printing such as, for example, Stockholm (the Lutheran Catechisms in Church Slavonic [1628] and Finnish [1644]), Rome (Filip Stanislavov’s Abagar [1651]), and Tübingen (the first Glagolitic Croatian translations of the New Testament [1562–63]).

A particularly important feature of the CGS database is the possibility to provide its records with links to other online catalogues and projects: the National Union Catalogue of Sweden LIBRIS, the Worldcat catalogue, the ProBok and Repertorium projects—in addition, the database includes a substantial number of links to online available digital surrogates of the described books. Thus, the CGS database will, it is hoped, serve as a continuously growing hub for information on the collections of early Cyrillic and Glagolitic manuscripts and printed books in Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

Proverbs offer insights into normative symbolic systems of mean- ing. In this article, proverbs collected in Northern Sweden that mirrors an older agrarian environment are studied with a specific subset of such a normative meaning system in focus: masculinity and femininity. The analysis is centered on three important domains of human experience: The Marriage Market, The Household and The Sexuality. It is argued that the gender conceptions found in the proverbs form a system of gender hegemony, with hierarchically superior masculinity and hierarchically subordinate femininity. Furthermore, a possible cultural model found in the proverbs, that of The Successful Household, is out- lined and discussed.

Fega pojkar pussar aldrig vackra flickor: Könsrelaterade ordspråk i nordnorrländsk agrarmiljö belysta ur språkligt och kulturellt perspektiv.2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation deals with 199 gender related proverbs that were collected in northern Sweden and were used in an agrarian environment, approximately between the beginning of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. The conceptions of gender which these proverbs convey also belong to the same time range and place.

The aim of this dissertation is to find out which conceptions of gender that is conveyed by proverbs in an older agrarian environment in northern Sweden. In order to achieve this aim the following question is examined: What conceptions are found in the proverb material of the cultural category woman, the cultural category man and of the relationship between these categories?

As a base for an interpretation of the proverbs, which are written in various Swedish dialects, a linguistic analysis is carried out. The interpretation is then formed through a concept that was developed by Kirshenblatt-Gimblett (1982); namely, base meaning. This concept relates to the shared meaning of a proverb by a group of people. The proverbs that include metaphors and similes are analyzed with a method that is developed from the cognitive linguistic theory of blending (Fauconnier & Turner 1996, 1998).

The proverb material is sorted in three analytical categories, and presented in separate chapters: Chapter four, The Marriage Market (Äktenskapsmarknaden), chapter five: The Household (Hushållet) and chapter six, Sexuality (Sexualiteten). These categories are in turn divided into sub categories.

One example of a salient conceptions of gender that is found in the category The Marriage Market is that the man chooses a woman, not the other way around. One example of a central conception in the category The Household is that the man earns money and supply other resources and the woman takes care of these resources. The significance of the conceptions of male and female sexuality is that they convey the difficulty in controlling a virulent male sexuality.

The gender conceptions are analysed as part of a system of gender hegemony and a cultural model of the successful household is suggested based on the proverb material.

Indigenous Place-Names in (Post)colonial Contexts: The Case of Ubmeje in Northern Sweden2020In: Scandinavian Studies, ISSN 0036-5637, E-ISSN 2163-8195, Vol. 92, no 1, p. 104-126Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Postcolonial societies around the world still struggle with lingering colonial structures, among them the many official place-names on maps, signs, and in various registers and databases that have largely replaced Indigenous names. In the wake of strengthened minority policy globally, many Western countries today are striving to mend some of the damage that colonial place-naming practices have done, by acknowledging precolonial names and helping to revitalize their usage. However, as place-names are connected to issues of identity and power, especially in plurilingual and multicultural areas, such processes often become complicated.

The purpose of this study, then, is to illuminate the meanings and functions of Indigenous place-names in postcolonial settings. It does so through a case study of the proposed implementation of the Ume Sámi name Ubmeje as an additional official name for the city of Umeå in northern Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

Narratives about northern Sweden are often narratives about nature. This has been true throughout history and is still true today. Different ways of understanding nature have become intertwined with the place and the people who live there. The nature in northern Sweden can be magnificent and impressive, but it can also be desolate, threatening and dangerous. A dominant image of nature in northern Sweden - then as now - is the image of resources, assets.

The overall aim of the study is to shed light on the role of nature in linguistic place-making in northern Sweden with a particular focus on the settler colonization during the 18th and 19th centuries. Through a selection of text sources, nature’s central place in the story of the colonization, of the place, its history, change and future is highlighted.

The texts that are analyzed are the two journals in which Petrus Læstadius described his work as a missionary in Lapland, as well as Olov Petter Pettersson's detailed description of the settler colonization in the work Gamla byar i Vilhelmina.

The settler colonization took place in areas with Sami presence and history and this study connects to the research field of Settler Colonial Studies in a critical discussion of the linguistic place-making in the texts.

One of the aims of the study is to also shed light on the connections that exist between the settler colonization depicted in the texts, and the linguistic place-making with nature at the center that is ongoing in northern Sweden today.
