Designing for social inclusion of immigrant women: The case of TeaTime2018In: Innovation. The European Journal of Social Sciences, ISSN 1351-1610, E-ISSN 1469-8412, Vol. 31, no 2, p. 106-124Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We present our design of a digital service supporting social inclusion among immigrant women in an ethnically and socially diverse neighbourhood of a small Finnish town. The aim is to explore experiences and perceptions as well as potential barriers and challenges for using the web-based service. The case study is framed as design research having a strong user-centred design approach. We describe the design process and present the results of a mixed-method evaluation. The results are scrutinized from the perspectives of experience design. The analysis reveals a potential to facilitate social inclusion through the fulfilment of needs related to relatedness, autonomy, competence, pleasure and stimulations as well as popularity. However, some challenges in the interface design and communication of the security and purpose of the site were identified in the study. Significant differences were also found between immigrant women and local people regarding the need for this digital service.

Designing for Suburban Social Inclusion: A Case of Geo-Located Storytelling2015In: Interaction Design and Architecture(s) Journal, Vol. 25, p. 85-99Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article showcases a digital solution for strengthening social inclusion and well-being of senior suburban residents of a socially diverse Finnish town. The study is framed as design research where research is conducted in order to feed into a design process. A background study was first conducted in order to identify the target group’s needs, abilities, and attitudes towards the neighbourhood. The results revealed positive attitudes towards the area and the need for relatedness, autonomy, competence, pleasure and stimulation, physical thriving and security. Following a User-Centered Design process we based our design choices on these results and developed a local geocaching solution incorporating storytelling. The aim was to encourage senior citizens to socialize, be physically active and to experience the local urban place. An interview-based evaluation with older adults (n=6) combined with an analysis of online cache log data, showed positive experiences of the solution.

Cross-Cultural Digital Design: Lessons Learned from the Case of Image TestLab2016In: Crossmedia-Kommunikation in kulturbedingten Handlungsräumen: Mediengerechte Anwendung und zielgruppenspezifische Ausrichtung / [ed] Christopher M. Schmidt, Wiesbaden: Springer, 2016, p. 285-303Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

How we perceive something is colored by our cultural background. This diversity in perception presents a number of challenges when we create digital content targeting users in a cross-cultural context. In order to create successful digital solutions, it is important to understand both the individual and the culture the content is designed for. We believe that the best way of designing for a good user experience, is to include the end user in the design process. In this chapter we address cultural issues related to User-Centred Design. Lessons learned during the case of designing an international web-based brand research instrument are further presented.

Att hantera övergång mot Industri 4.0: En studie om implementering av digitala tillverkningsprocesser2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The powerful digitization and development of technologies is a fact. As a result, companies are facing the fourth industrial revolution in history; Industry 4.0. To remain competitive, it is important for companies to assimilate Industry 4.0 and its technologies, especially within manufacturing. Industry 4.0 offers numerous opportunities, but the implementation also comes with some challenges that should be taken into account for a successful transition. The aim of this study is to create an understanding of what Industry 4.0 can offer for companies and their manufacturing processes, and which challenges and opportunities that may be involved. This study has been based on research of the phenomenon Industry 4.0 as well as data collection from semi-structured interviews with employees of an industrial manufacturing enterprise.

The result of the study can be divided in to 4 separate conclusions that should be taken into account when implementing Industry 4.0. First of all, the company must have a customized strategy to embrace the implementation into their existing structure. Secondly, it is important that all employees are informed and involved about the new procedures to increase understanding as well as motivation. Thirdly, it is important that existing techniques and digital tools within the company are adapted for a transition to Industry 4.0, and they must also have a common standard to facilitate for data management. Finally, if these three areas listed above are taken into account, the implementation of Industry 4.0, can provide real-time information and understanding that contribute to a better overview of the manufacturing, the quality, the efficiency, the work tempo, as well as any problems and downtime. Industry 4.0 also allows for businesses to create a more flexible production and give a good insight and control over the business, including better decision. On top of that, it also cuts the energy consumption as well as many other expenses. Overall, Industry 4.0 offers companies an opportunity to potentially become leading in the global market.

Härskarens nya kläder: Vad händer när härskartekniker flyttar in på Facebook?2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis we focus on the issue of master suppression techniques and how they take form on Facebook. The research in area of master suppression techniques online is limited and therefore the purpose of this thesis is to create a greater understanding of the online environment of Facebook. We have used a method of netnographic observation studies and content analysis to create a triangular perspective of the subject. Based on the result of our observation studies we draw the conclusion that you can see signs of some of the master suppression techniques on Facebook. We also argue why others don’t show up. Another conclusion that we draw is that the environment on public Facebook pages is more harsh than we first believed. We also present a categorisation model for a simple overviewing of master suppression techniques on Facebook.

Bygga tillit på mobila enheter: En studie av designpraktik2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Increasing collection of user data in society raises issues of trust. How much information are we really prepared to share and what makes some services better than others in trustbuilding? Trust has been identified as necessary in vulnerable situations where risk is present, and many studies have highlighted the importance of trust on the web. For companies and organizations that collect sensitive user data, it becomes particularly important to build trust with their users. Mobile devices have characteristics that create both opportunities and challenges for user experience design. This study intends to find out how these influence design work from a trust perspective, and finally, how to build trust on mobile devices. Through qualitative interviews, the study has examined experiences of design work where sensitive user data has been involved. The results of the study show five themes, all of which are essential for building trust on mobile devices.

Att lyckas med en dashboard: En kvalitativ studie om framgångsfaktorer i en Business Intelligence-lösning2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Success is something different for every organisation and Business Intelligence can be a tool to achieve success. Today big data is everywhere and organisations are starting to use these data and transform it to information. Information has always been valuable and from an organisational view now more than ever. Transforming data into information is critical, due to the fact that it’s a lot of data to consider. To acquire information, visualization of data may be useful. Dashboards can help in the process but it isn’t an easy task.  Instead of putting focus on the problem and the underlying factors, this study intends to investigate the success factors that can be the base for the use of a successful dashboard as a Business Intelligence tool. Previous research shows that there is no legitimate framework for success factors in Business Intelligence tools and dashboards. Through a qualitative approach and semi-structured interviews, we examine what users perceive as the most important factors for a successful dashboard. This is done with a Business Intelligence focus. The study shows that the major success factors when using a dashboard is purpose, data quality, organisational knowledge and context. These factors will hopefully lead to success when using a dashboard.

Is it too late?: Investigating implications of late introduction of a user-centered approach in design processes2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With the increasing number of digital applications being developed today, the demand on smooth processes and satisfied end users increase along with it. In software development the focus on functionality is central in any process and is the factor determining whether or not the application is functional. However, even if a product is functional it does not mean that it is easy to use, hence providing a satisfying user experience. The purpose of this paper is to study whether or not there are any implications regarding the user experience when a user-centered approach is not applied from the beginning of any give process, taking the variety of methodologies available in regard. The paper is supposed to provide an initial insight into the problems regarding application of user-centered design in the development of digital artifacts. This is a qualitative study where six practicing interaction designers where interviewed regarding their experiences in processes where they had been involved from the start and projects where they had been involved at a later stage, and what, if any, differences there were. The results showed that there is in fact a difference in how the respondents viewed the different scenarios, with the most significant difference being that the impact they had decreased the further down the line they were introduced to the project, as well as the value of user tests drastically decreased. Budget and deadline were two important aspects that were pointed out as being the deciding factor when dealing with changes in a project where late introduction of user-centered design had occurred.

"Det finns en "vi och dem"-känsla som beror på det geografiska": En kvalitativ fallstudie om hur samhörighet skapas på distribuerade IT-konsultbolag med hjälp av IKT2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

IT consulting firms increasingly work distributed with employees based in different geographic locations. In this there is a difficulty in developing and maintaining good soli- darity and togetherness. Former research indicates that organizations need to frame and comply with strategies regarding distributed work in order to be successful and competi- tive. This inquiry purpose to study the requirements needed to invent solidarity and togetherness in IT consulting firms. In this qualitative research the empirical data is gathe- red through semi-structured interviews which is complemented with relevant literature. In order to create a distinct structure a theoretical framework with focus on social processes has been designed. By using the theoretical framework concrete strategies was formulated. The essence in this inquiry’s conclusion is the comprehension of invisible values in distri- buted IT consulting firms. Invisible values refers to none-measurable aspects in the social working environment. This inquiry results in a few concrete suggestions regarding te- chnical solutions that can support the social processes in distributed organizations.

Att läsa genom att lyssna: En studie om bibliotekariers attityder till och användning av ljudböcker som läsfrämjande redskap2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Almost everyone in today’s society is in contact with projects (Tonnquist, 2010). At the sametime, the idea of what project management is often gets misunderstood. The interest forproject management and public relations lad the bases for this examination work. This is astudy that aims to improve the efficiency in projects at a PR agency. A couple of mainquestions were prepared to reach the purpose. These include how an agency is working withthe project process compared to theories, also the workflow and how ideas are developed ishighlighted to improve the efficiency. This study describes the traditional and the agile approach to provide an objective view ofhow projects could be carried. The method has then been qualitative with simplistic interviewsand observation at a case-agency. The goal has been to see the connections betweentheory and reality in order to give recommendations for a more efficient project work. The result of this study identifies some similarities between theory and reality. Trends inboth agile and traditional where seen. Though the result mainly showed a lack of structureand that the case-agency doesn’t work with a common strategy for project processes. The agency is given the recommendation to apply a structured version of both the traditionaland the agile approach. Then setting up a system for selecting. A project that is clearly drivenby the customer gets the traditional project approach. Clients that do know what they wantto achieve, but not how, gets projects with an agile approach. Another recommendation is togain a structured process for how to generate ideas. Less extensive recommendations inareas such as time management and prioritization where also presented. The efficiency issummarized in the application of the Lean philosophy, to eliminate everything that does notprovide benefits to the customer. The most relevant finding from this study is that project management is like life. There aremany different theories on how it can or should be done, but in the end it’s up to everyone tocreate their own way of doing it. Although the selected route should be at least reasonablystructured.

Palestina & Israel genom ögonen av svensk nyhetspress: En studie av fyra svenska tidningars rapportering av Israel-Palestina-konflikten2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study, Palestine & Israel through the eyes of the Swedish newsmedia, has examined how four Swedish newspapers framed the Israel-Palestine conflict between the years 2008-2018, as well as how the newspaper's coverage changed over time. The study used a quantitative and a qualitative method by analyzing frequently used words in the analyzed articles as well as in-depth readings of a few individual articles chosen via random selection. The study used framing theory as a way of analyzing the texts as well as Johan Galtung's normative theory of war- and peace journalism (Galtung 2003, 177-180). The study found that the Swedish newspapers most often used an international political frame to contextualize the war between Israel and Palestine. Focusing on the actions of international organizations and countries outside of the region historically known as Palestine. This way of framing the war also increased in tandem with big events in the international community such as Palestine's application to become a member of the UN. Furthermore, the results also showed that the Swedish newspapers’ portrayal of peace differed somewhat from Johan Galtung's description of “peace journalism”. The main difference was that peace journalism focused a lot more on the actions of elites rather than the actions of civilians. The elite persons that appeared in this frame were usually political actors such as the president of The United States and the foreign minister of Sweden.

SEXUELLA TRAKASSERIER MOT BIBLIOTEKSPERSONAL: Typer, strategier och konsekvenser2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Global Software Development (GSD) is based on a geographical distance where teams are spread throughout the world. The related research have for a long time addressed the challenges presented by geographical distances. GSD is basically a necessity for many businesses to use in order to reduce development costs, reduce production time and to maintain high quality. The study aims to investigate the relationship between the reality of a specific maintenance project. Thus, our research question: How do distributed maintenance teams experience temporal, geographical and socio-cultural distances? To achieve the purpose of the study, we chose to perform a case study of a global consulting company which recently started a new system maintenance project. The data collection was done through interviews and observations at the premises of the consulting company. We have confirmed the previous research and come up with our own contributions to the field. The findings of our thesis provides aspects of communication, coordination and control related to the three distances stated in our research question. A new collective term has also emerged, off-shore blackboxing.

Telepresence communication för människor i kontorsmiljö: En kvalitativ studie i användarupplevelse av Mobile Robotic Telepresence2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As companies are more globalised and teams become more geographically distributed, the demand for technical solutions to bring more variety of communication increases. The aim of this study is to get a deeper understanding of how Mobile Robotic Telepresence is perceived by people  that is working in an office for a non-technological oriented company, and is interacting with it for the first time. The study was conducted at the participants office during workday where they got to control and practically explore the robot through a computer. The result shows that there is a positive attitude towards new technology and possible solutions for people that would like to cut down on work-related travels or a new way to arrange meeting. even though there were positive attitude, only half of the participants saw a clear use for the robot in their current work environment.

HIGH SCORE: A qualitative study on how gaming can further awareness in office environments2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Gamification as an educational tool has been explored extensively in traditional academic contexts such as universities and schools. There is however a lack of research on the usage of games for educational purposes in organizations, and even less research has evaluated games’ potential in creating organizational awareness. To understand if companies could benefit from gamification, this study looked at how employees’ professional backgrounds, social interaction and context during a game experience can influence employees’ awareness of the organization. In order to do that, a digital game that portrayed the supply chain process of an industrial company and focused on specific key aspects was built and tested with 17 employees in a large international organization. The results show that digital games can further both awareness of the organization by letting employees play and experience key aspects of the delivery process. The most noticeable increase in awareness were with the participants whose work is not directly involved in the supply chain.

Som man ropar får man svar: En jämförande fallstudie om hur två organisationer med hjälp av kommunikativa strategier arbetar med sina arbetsgivarvarumärken2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Title: "You get what you ask for” - A comparative study of two organizations and how they,

with the help of communicative strategies, work with their employer brands.

The purpose of this study was to compare how two organizations use communication

strategies as a part of their employer brand strategy. The study is based on the fact that today

it has become increasingly important for organizations to work with their employer brands.

Globalisation has led to new competitive situations for organizations and therefore the need

for communication has increased. The two organizations in this study have different

preconditions regarding recruitment. One organization is a part of the public sector and

has large recruitment needs. The other organization is smaller and privately owned and do

not have the same recruitment needs. The study also aims to identify if the communication

strategies differ depending on the differences between the organizations and how much

competition there is for jobs. To succeed with this, theories related to marketing,

organizational theory, organizational culture and organizational communication was used.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted and six employees were interviewed.

The analysis showed that both organizations thought it was important to work with their

employer brands but they worked in different ways to strengthen them. One organization had

a stated strategy and the other had not. One thing both organizations had in common was that

they considered their employees to be important assets, but they worked a little different to

strengthen their organizational cultures. In the external communication one organization were

more cautious while the other organization argued that they needed to be more daring to be

able to strenghten their employer brand. The result indicates that the strategies differ between

the organizations. The difference is mostly due to the different preconditions the

organizations had right from the start. The fact that one is part of the public sector and the

other one is a private organization is a thing that matters. Their sizes and their different

working areas also influence their work with the employer brand.

Det integrerade folk- och skolbiblioteket ur ett dramaturgiskt perspektiv2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The patient safety is not threatened” A discourse analysis of the patient safety discourse

The purpose of this study was to analyze the patient safety discourse through two different text-based materials. Three county councils / regions patient safety stories from 2015 and 19 articles on “nurses” and “patient safety” in the local press written in 2015 were analyzed with a discourse theory ambition. This is to see if there were inconsistencies and conflicts within the patient safety discourse. A patient safety story is by law required to be written every year for practitioners of health care.Security, interoperability, results, quality and patient safety culture was found as nodalpoints in the patient safety stories and the study clearly shows that there is a big difference between the materials in the attribution of meaning to the found nodalpoints. The patient safety stories uses rationality and bureaucratic jargon to ascribe meaning to the nodalpoints, and puts great faith in the measurement of risk, while those expressed by and about nurses in local press is very based on emotional arguments and an experience that the care provided is not secure due to shortage of nurses. There is therefore great antagonism within the patient safety discourse and the media can therefore be said to have an important role to challenge the otherwise hegemonic conception of what patient safety is and how patient safety is described in the patient safety stories.

Key words: patient safety, discourse theory, patient safety stories, nurses, media

Romen i journalisternas händer: en kritisk diskusanalys av hur romer framställs i Dagens nyheter före och efter erkännandet som nationell minoritet2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The study The Rome in the hands of journalists: a critical discourse analysis of how Roma people are represented in Dagens Nyheter before and after recognition as a national minority examines the swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter´s reporting of the Roma people in 1998 and 2018. The aim is to find out if the recognition as a national minority in 2000 has created some form of change in the journalists' representation of the Roma people and how it is expressed.  The method that has been used is a critical discourse analysis, where the main focus has been on the language the journalists have used and how it influenced the larger social context. The study uses a theoretical framework that includes theories that surronds the power of media, representation of the language, stereotypes and other psychological aspects which can explain the mindset of the journalists.  The analysis found both differences and similarities in the reporting of the Roma people since they became a recognised national minority in Sweden. Still, in the discourse of 2018 it can be seen that they mostly are portrayed in av negative and stereotyped way. But it can also be noticed that small steps within the social discourse has been taken. Especially in the usage of language where the Roma people in 1998 almost always where named as ”gypsies” which almost never occured in 2018. It can also be seen that in the discourse of 2018 that the Roma people get to speak for themselves in a less stereotyped way than in 1998. The study found that it is only then, when the Roma is depicted as an individual and get to tell its own story, old stereotypes can be disregarded.

Nationalism och Norrientalism: En diskursanalys av den norrländska självständighetsdebatten sensommaren 2016 och framåt2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The student thesis Nationalism and Norrientalism: A Discourse Analysis of the Norrlandic Independence Debate of Late Summer 2016 and Beyond aims to examine the style and content of the recent secession debate in the Swedish and Norrlandic printed press.

From the late summer of 2016 to the beginning of 2017 the question of Norrlandic sovereignty was a prioritized topic in the legacy media debate, as well as in social media. It commenced after the Swedish government enterprise Vattenfall planned to relocate forty employment opportunities from Jokkmokk, raising the question of Norrlandic independence based on a post-colonialist view of the region. This thesis examines how the framing of Northern Sweden as a colony has been established, re-established or refuted in the different discourses of the printed debate, through a faceted lens composed of various theories of Orientalism and nationalism.

Rooted in the discourse theory of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, merged with the critical discourse analysis of Norman Fairclough, and leaning against media theories of inoculation and framing, the study takes aim at the myths, metaphors, articulations and antagonisms which constituted the polemics in the printed press of the period.

The results conclude that the debate revolved around independence, resources, and the myth regarding Norrland—often described as a barren landscape, marked by vast distances and a lack of social services. The term colony was used to describe Norrland as marginalised and robbed of its natural resources, whereas the term was met by opposition from the objecting side, who emphasised the historic and present representation of Norrlanders in high politics. The colonial identity was constituted in the press through internal Orientalism by Stockholm writers and self-Orientalisation by Norrlandic ones. The most distinct patterns of difference between the objecting side and the advocating side of independence was the determination of the real economic loser of a Norrlandic secession from Sweden.

Ekot av normerna: En diskursanalytisk studie av hur kön konstrueras i Dagens Ekos nyhetssändningar2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sweden’s most trusted news distributor, Sveriges Radio (Swedish Public Service radio broadcaster), has high ambitions with the journalism it broadcasts – especially when it comes to gender equality and diversity. This thesis examines how gender is constructed in Dagens Eko (Today’s Echo) to find if and how power structures are expressed language-wise. Queer theory is used to look at how gender is constructed and how one can look at, and question, gender and gender hierarchies. Intersectionality is used to find how different power structures work together, combined with theories about how journalism constructs truth. At the same time the thesis is also evaluating different choices of theories and methods, to find strengths and weaknesses for future research purposes.

The analysis is based on materials from domestic news segments from Dagens Eko, consisting of one week’s broadcasts in January 2015. Critical linguistics is used as a method, with emphasis on Halliday’s functional grammar, as a part of Fairclough’s three-layer model. Through the eye of critical discourse analysis, this study shows that gender is constructed through language, more specifically via categorization and stereotyping. The thesis conducts that the use of so called cases, people who are in the news segments to give a more human perspective on the subject, is problematic because this is as also a way of efficiently constructing stereotypes. The thesis also concludes that while using statistics to present more equal representation in the news, this is not enough.

Gamification i utbildning: Hur görs det på bästa sätt?2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Gamification is the use of elements and mechanics from the video-game industry in contexts which are not game-related. Gamification has, in the last decade, become a popular way to enhance a lot of contexts, such as medicine, business and education, by creating intrinsic motivation and engagement as well as changing behavior in the userbase. While a big part of the published science related to gamification is concerned with the question of “does gamification work?”, the question of what makes it work and why it works have gotten less attention. This study researches how to design a gamification experience in the context of education in the best possible way, including what the most common pitfalls are and how to avoid them, by studying the published literature on gamification in the context of education.

The results of the study suggest that adhering to the self-determination theory (SDT) from the field of psychology is important in creating intrinsic motivation, and that a key part of gamification design may lie in choosing game elements which fulfil the three basic needs proposed by SDT: relatedness, competence and autonomy. A common pitfall in the design of gamification seems to be failure to fulfill these three needs. The study also shows that while gamification yields positive results for many people, a small but significant portion of the population does not gain any benefit from many gamification experiences. This suggests that an analysis of the future users of the gamification experience should be done prior to designing the gamification experience. Lastly, useful design principles are also found and discussed.

A manual alphabet for touchless gesture-controlled writing input with a myoelectric device: Design, evaluation and user experience2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The research community around gesture-based interaction has so far not paid attention to the possibility of replacing the keyboard with natural gestures for writing purposes. Additionally, insight into the actual user experience of such an interaction style is only insufficiently provided. This work presents a novel approach for text input that is based on a manual alphabet, MATImyo. The hand alphabet was developed in a user-centered design process involving potential users in pre-studies, design process and evaluation procedure. In a Wizard-of-Oz style experiment with accompanying interviews, the alphabet’s quality as input language for composing electronic texts was evaluated and the user experience of such an interaction style assessed. MATImyo was found to be very suitable as gestural input language with a positive user experience. The whole process of designing MATImyo and evaluating its suitability and user experience was based on the principles of Embodied Interaction, which was chosen as theoretical framework. This work contributes to understanding the bigger picture of the user experience of gesture-based interaction and presents a novel, more natural text input method.

No Writing Center is an Island: A Swedish Writing Center and its University Library Work Together2016In: Building Bridges through Academic Writing: Research, Policy, and Practice: Third International Conference on Academic Writing in Israel June 27-28, 2016, 2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Writing center tutors and librarians share in the goal of helping students with the recursive processes of writing and researching. Nevertheless, few writing centers that are located in university libraries work collaboratively, but rather simply share a location.

Research from the US shows that collaboration can take different forms, and while some of these may be readily transferable to European university systems, some will be challenging to implement. Also, this research tends to originate from librarians rather than writing consultants (Ferer, 2012).

Umea University is unusual in that it works collaboratively. Drawing on our experience, we will provide a Swedish university's perspective based on the collaboration between its Writing Centre and University Library. We explain how we work together to match students' writing and researching needs, the challenges in collaborating, and what future additional collaborations are possible. Finally, we raise the question, what more can we do to develop and maintain our collaboration?

Discussing best practices can provide valuable information to better meet the new generation of students. Research, thinking and writing go hand in hand. Rather than compartmentalizing these processes, writing tutors and librarians can work together with students to help them navigate these intricately linked processes. Collecting this expertise into one location allows students more comprehensive support and convenient access: "one-stop shopping" (Cooke & Bledsoe, 2008).

Writing centers and libraries can have an influence in the current reformation of higher education and should contribute to the discussion by promoting their strengths and sharing their respective knowledge (Elmborg, 2005). We hope to contribute to the conversation through our presentation.

Öppen Innovation: En kvalitativ studie om idétransformation inom företag2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The concept of open innovation is about outsourcing part of the innovation process to external actors and to make use of other resources and knowledge than your own. This is one possible way to meet the challenges that today’s competitive and fast market places on companies. Open innovation has created conditions for open events such as hackathons and through these kind of events, ideas can be generated that companies can use in their business. Outside-in is a perspective of open innovation as a means to integrate external knowledge and ideas into its own operations, and this study takes place in the context of open innovation with an outside-in perspective. The study aims to find how the methods, techniques and tools affects the transition from an idea to an internal project, which results in new products and services. The study is qualitative and data has been collected through interviews with companies which have extensive knowledge of working with innovation. The result of the study shows there is a gap in the transformation of ideas and internal projects, and that there are no systematic approach to the methods, techniques and tools used to facilitate the transformation.

    Abstract [en]

This study was focused to highlight the problems that comes with being a minority on a workplace, in this case female sports journalist who are working in a male dominated sports field. The objective was to find out how the female sports journalist was experiencing working in such a domain, with focus on journalists who works on local news papers. The study also wanted to look on how these workplaces incorporated gender in their daily work.

In combination with gender theory, with concepts as masculine hegemony and power structures, I also choose to apply the american researcher Rosabeth M Kanters concept ”token”. With these aspects in mind I analyzed the five interviews that I carried out with female sports journalist with a qualitative data analysis.

The results of the study showed that the female sports journalist in some aspects were aware of the difficulties of being a woman in a male dominated area – when they were talking about the profession at large. But on the other hand they were not as aware when it came to their own situation. Even though the gender problems that comes with being a woman in a patriarchal society, in combination with the minority-issue, the respondents did not express their situation in terms of problem, even though their stories of interview situations for example showed the opposite.

In conclusion, the study showed that even though the respondents really enjoyed their work, even though it was not always easy to cope with. But since their own interest in sports and the profession lead them there in the first place, the obstacles created in society like the minority role they were in or the fact that they are women in a patriarchal society, they kept working in the profession despite the resistance.

Effektiv crossmedia - Att äta kakan och ha den kvar: En kvalitativ studie om hur småföretag kan effektivisera sin marknadsföring2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Crossmedia is a phenomenon that is widely used for marketing despite the fact that far from everyone are familiar with the word. Crossmedia has many advantages if used effectively, although this is not always the case. Small business owners are facing many challenges, among which limited time and budget are the most common. Research shows that marketing is a challenge for small businesses and that they often lack concrete plans and strategies. It also suggests that some sort of guidance, for example in the shape of DIY-tools, would be beneficial for small business owners since hiring communication agencies usually is too expensive. Three local small business owners have been interviewed in this study in order to investigate the thoughts they have about marketing and to what extent they use crossmedia. It was found that all respondents use crossmedia to some extent and that all of them experience challenges related to marketing. All respondents also agreed that the need for assistance in marketing exists among small business owners. With this in mind, a checklist has been created as a part of this study to assist small business owners in their marketing practice and help them implement successful use of crossmedia. Surveys have been used to evaluate the checklist and the results show additional support for the thesis that this kind of help is useful for small business owners.

    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to shine a light on the challenges connected to the implementation of a process focused way of thinking in a public service organization. To this we have conducted a series of qualitative interviews, primarily from participants of a university driven project. The project aims to teach decision making employees of public service organizations how to use process modeling techniques to increase their efficiency. We have also interviewed the teachers who have taught the courses included in the project. As a final point of view we have also interviewed a researcher and IT consultants to compare novice users with experienced users of process modeling techniques. The interviews resulted in a high amount of data which we then analyzed by categorizing the data in five different categories. These categories provided the base of our result and originated solely from our interviews. We found that we had two main categories, comprehension of the organization and comprehension of the notation. We also found three categories that influenced these two main categories, communication, external factors and synergies and distribution. Our analysis showed that every category, or challenge if you will, could be connected in some way to previous research. As a conclusion we could show that all of our five categories could be verified as challenges connected to the implementation of a process focused way of thinking in a public service organization.

Trapped in Facebook: A grounded theory exploration2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Facebook is the biggest social network and therefore it is of interest to view how people get immersed into the user experience of it. Not much has been done about immersion into Facebook and how it entraps the user in a never-ending flow of impressions. Using a combination of qualitative interview studies and think-aloud walkthroughs we set out to study this phenomena. We found a varying mix of immersion, from those who couldn’t stop looking through their feeds to those who just used Facebook as a phonebook. We also found that while many wanted to reduce their usage of Facebook, none seemed able to make that plunge. From this we find design implications for both designing for immersion and avoiding entrapment. One key to the former is to have an error free environment, while the latter would be to make sure that all information is searchable.

Hur översätts naturen?: En kritisk diskursanalys av de svenska miljömålen2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket) has overseen the implementation, evaluation and development of the environmental political decisions in Sweden since 1967. In 1999 one “generation goal” (the general direction of the environmental politics) and fifteen “environmental quality goals” was installed to guide their work, in 2005 a sixteenth goal was instated. These goals (except for one) are supposed to be met in 2020. This is a study from a communication perspective of these goals and The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s role based on the theoretical concepts issue arena, stakeholder thinking, network, translation and mass communication. The method used is critical discourse analysis which focuses on how we understand, relate to and value different aspects of reality. The way political goals about the environment are written has implications on our relationship with nature and how we choose to govern it. The analysis shows, in line with previous studies on environmental policy documents, that the economical and human-centred discourses dominate. Ecological metaphors and expressions are mostly allowed within the discourse ecological modernisation. What differs from previous studies is that the growth discourse and the neo-liberal discourse are somewhat challenged and that the economical and human-centred discourses are questioned in some cases. The main conclusions are that more ecological discourse should be implemented in the translations of the political goals to gradually change the way we value and relate to nature and thereby create solutions that are sustainable long term. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency also should not back away from expressing the ethical responsibilities we have to restore and protect nature.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to study the two cases ”The hijacking of a bus in Årdal” & ”The double murder in Ljungsbro” from media ethics aspects.  The aim for this study is to clear up if the the Swedish newspapers have reported according to the mediaethic rules and to see if there is any

differences between the newspapers reporting. The following theories has been used to reach the objective: the journalism task, news values, the liberty of press and speach, media ethical rules and discursive discrimination. The study has used a critical discourse method formed by Teun a. van Dijk to analyse the material, mainly through macro- and microstructures. The material that has been analyzed are articles from Expressen, Aftonbladet, Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens Nyheter. From each happening, two articles per newspaper has been selected by a toss, which ended up with sixteen articles for the whole study. The result and analysis are introduced in packedges, contaning two articles per newspaper and are devided into the two different cases the study examines.

The result indicate that Expressen and Aftonbladet has breached the media ethic rules in both cases when focusing on the one of the swedish victims in Årdal and also when reporting about the suspect murderer in Ljungsbro. The basic journalistic ideals and values has been ignored, for the interest of producing sensational news.

    Abstract [sv]

Non-technical users’ first encounters with a robotic telepresence technology: An empirical study of office workers2018In: Paladyn - Journal of Behavioral Robotics, ISSN 2080-9778, E-ISSN 2081-4836, Vol. 9, no 1, p. 307-322Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Robotic telepresence technologies are becoming ever more usable and affordable, as well as increasingly available as consumer products. In the coming years, a significant number of people are likely to encounter the technology for the first time, and many, if not most, of them are going to be “non-technical” users, that is, people who do not have special technical knowledge and skills of IT-professionals. Therefore, understanding how nontechnical users are getting familiar with robotic telepresence technology, how they perceive the technology, learn to control it, and relate it to their everyday work practices, is a topical research issue. This paper reports an empirical study, in which eight non-technical users, office workers who were not IT-professionals, were introduced to robotic telepresence and provided with a practical experience of acting as pilots of a remotely controlled robot. In follow up interviews the participants were asked to reflect on potential uses of the technology in their professional activities. The participants could successfully acquire basic navigation skills and reached a high level of spatial presence, but experienced problems with developing a "new body image”. When reflecting on the potential of the technology for supporting their work, the participants envisioned a number of benefits associated with remote physical mobility. The impact of the technology on the quality of workrelated social interactions was expected to be generally positive but somewhat limited.

    Abstract [en]

The paper reports a study in which two aspects of interaction design - human interaction with technology and acting through technology were analyzed in the context of participatory sessions having the focus group format. The sessions were conducted as a part of redesigning a novel digital artifact, a web-based project management tool. An initial prototype of the artifact was introduced to two different groups of participants possessing expertise in, respectively, human-computer interaction (HCI) and teaching and learning, a key target application domain for the tool. Re-design suggestions provided by each of the focus groups were found to address issues with both user interface and functionality of the prototype. The main difference between the groups was in whether they primarily focused on interaction efficiency or artifact's integration into a larger social and technological context. Implications of the study for further development of participatory methods in interaction design are discussed.

Probing the design space of a telepresence robot gesture arm with low fidelity prototypes2017In: HRI '17 Proceedings of the 2017 ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction, ACM Digital Library, 2017, , p. 494p. 352-360Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The general problem addressed in this paper is supporting a more efficient communication between remote users, who control telepresence robots, and people in the local setting. The design of most telepresence robots does not allow them to perform gestures. Given the key role of pointing in human communication, exploring design solutions for providing telepresence robots with deictic gesturing capabilities is, arguably, a timely research issue for Human-Robot Interaction. To address this issue, we conducted an empirical study, in which a set of low fidelity prototypes, illustrating various designs of a robot's gesture arm, were assessed by the participants (N=18). The study employed a mixed-method approach, a combination of a controlled experiment, elicitation study, and design provocation. The evidence collected in the study reveals participants' assessment of the designs, used in the study, and provides insights into parti.cipants' attitudes and expectations regarding gestural communication with telepresence robots in general.

    Abstract [en]

As a research focused organization the problem with making the information easily read and interesting to the extent that the reader wants to share this information with its friends is a crucial one. To create the perfect communication, reaching and affecting the majority of society is an impossible task. If the focus instead lies on the thought that by building a serious and dependable reputation, using the ease of social media and trying to create a ripple effect to make change by networking communication, there is a possibility to influence.

The art of persuasion starts by building trust in a person or in this case in an organization. But if the communication is made by social media, how can one tell if the communication has built trust or created any positive response by the readers?

By using Python, a search algorithm has been set up for mining Twitter and analyzing all data covering the area of biofuel and its participants. This data is then used to start an information feedback loop, where the analytical conclusions made from the retrieved information and activities can affect the communication forwarded from the sender. In an agile manner the user is to choose “sprint”-time as well as a time for retrospect, all to refine the analytical method and improve the process.

“100k följare innan det här året är slut”: En studie om strategierna för personlig marknadsföring inom sociala medier2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

We all have a personal brand, even if we are not aware of it. What we choose to work with and our hobbies define how we are perceived. Social media is a platform that allows us to become whoever we want. And we can attract a large amount of followers with the correct strategies. This essay is conducted through a qualitative study with the purpose to investigate the strategies behind successful profiles on instagram. We used semi-structured interviews to answer our question formulations: What strategies are used? How are the strategies used? What are the reasons behind the initiative? And how is the relationship to the followers?

The study shows that a majority of the strategies on instagram require networking. The profiles help each other to grow by taking part in “likegroups” and through the “shoutout for shoutout” technique. We also found that the interactive users can have a large influence over the content.

Utmaningar med utveckling av mobila applikationer: En fallstudie om kravhantering ur ett utvecklingsperspektiv2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The use of mobile devices has during the last years expanded and on the market you can see a huge amount of applications. The development of mobile applications differs from traditional systems development since mobility infers that mobile applications can be used in different technological and social contexts. Although previous research has recognized that mobility can present mobile application developers with certain challenges, empirical studies of how problems arise and how they can be handled has thus far been limited. In this study we focused on the requirements engineering process from a development view with the purpose of finding challenges emerging in the development process. The study is based on a qualitative case study that employed semi-structured interviews with both project managers and system developers active in the requirements process. The data gathering included seven participants from five different companies. The results of the study showed that there is a huge lack in methodology usage when developing mobile applications. Most of the requirements were focused on technical issues with developing mobile applications. It was hard to take into account the user needs since they were hard to anticipate. The respondents felt that the relationship with the customer was most important when developing, nor was it important to identify the end users. The developers often expressed that customers lacked sufficient knowledge, and that the customer had not had time to mature when it comes to mobile application development. In the study we concluded that developers need to direct more attention towards finding the end users, identify their needs, and more work towards developing a methodology that focuses on that.

Äventyr och vänner: En undersökning av Facebookgruppen On Edge - En mötesplats för tjejer som söker äventyr2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay was to investigate how a functional and committed online community was established. We have analyzed a Facebook group named "On Edge - a community for girls who seeks adventures" to explore how On Edge is communicating to create dedication and identification amongst its members in their online community. The study has combined theories such as social identity theory, prosumption, participatory culture and mediatization theory. We have used a multimodal analysis to analyze the administrators and the members posts on Facebook, an online survey for On Edge’s members to answer and an interview with the founder of the community, Ebba Cronqvist. The result of the multimodal analysis showed that On Edge uses text and images to create a united language within the group that leads to dedication and identification to the community. The survey showed that most of the members felt a need of a place where adventurous women could meet other women who are alike. They help each other because of the friendly atmosphere and by the meaningful exchange of thoughts and minds. We also found that there are some fundamental forces that shapes On Edge to such a well working community: the group is driven by a strong “why”, and by using a language appropriate for the target group together with images, it creates a friendly atmosphere amongst the members in the group.

Robustness of journal rankings by network flows with different amounts of memory2016In: Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, ISSN 2330-1635, E-ISSN 2330-1643, Vol. 67, no 10, p. 2527-2535Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

As the number of scientific journals has multiplied, journal rankings have become increasingly important for scientific decisions. From submissions and subscriptions to grants and hirings, researchers, policy makers, and funding agencies make important decisions influenced by journal rankings such as the ISI journal impact factor. Typically, the rankings are derived from the citation network between a selection of journals and unavoidably depend on this selection. However, little is known about how robust rankings are to the selection of included journals. We compare the robustness of three journal rankings based on network flows induced on citation networks. They model pathways of researchers navigating the scholarly literature, stepping between journals and remembering their previous steps to different degrees: zero-step memory as impact factor, one-step memory as Eigenfactor, and two-step memory, corresponding to zero-, first-, and second-order Markov models of citation flow between journals. We conclude that higher-order Markov models perform better and are more robust to the selection of journals. Whereas our analysis indicates that higher-order models perform better, the performance gain for higher-order Markov models comes at the cost of requiring more citation data over a longer time period.

En studie i brott: om sexualitet, etnicitet och psykisk sjukdom: en kvantitativ och kvalitativ jämförelse om hur gärningsmännen bakom två uppmärksammade flickmord representeras i Aftonbladet och på Flashback forum.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this quantitative and qualitative study A study in crime: about sexuality, ethnicity and mental illness has been to reveal the relation between how the evening newspaper Aftonbladet and the Internet forum Flashback forum represent two men who has been convicted for the murder of two underaged girls. Hence more than one sixth of the swedish population has a lot of confidence in this newspaper it has been important to see how mental illness, sexuality, masculinity and ethnicity is produced and therefore reproduced through its descriptions of these men.

The central theories which have been used to visualize the representation of masculinity, sexuality, ethnicity and mental illness is R.W. Conell´s theory of hegemonic masculinity, Judith Butler´s hetereosexual matrix, semiotics, media commodification and framing. In addition, previous studies in the media reporting of the convicted rapist ”Hagamannen” and the terrorist Anders Behring Breivik as well as theory of the ideal vicitim and therefore the ideal perpretator has been relevant.

The material consists of a number of articles about the resolution of the homicide of Lisa Holm in 2015 and Helén Nilsson in 2004 in which Nerijus Bilevicus and Ulf Olsson were condemned. Furthermore, comments on Flashback forum where the abovementioned cases have been discussed were analyzed. Denotation and connotation, the heterosexual matrix and the pressethical rules applied as methodological tools.

In the current media landscape of 2016 newpapers´ foremost competitors of the readers’ attention are the complimentary websites and Internet forums. The comparison indicated that the users of Flashback forum discussed similar subjects as Aftonbladet regarding the previous mentioned attributes. Also, we identified that the journal more frequentely violated the pressethical rules in the describtions of the perpetrator who suffered from mental illness and was both bisexual, transsexual and also a pedofile. However, the ethnicity of the second perpetrator appeared early in the reporting of the homicide.

The results of the study have shown that the mechanisms of the commodification of media were more substantial in 2004/2005, concerning the descriptions of the perpetrator. The journal in 2015/2016 does not seem to have delievered such information to satisfy the crowd in comparison to the comments on Flashback forum. This is in contrary to the admitted opinion by media scholars.

Att aktivera deltagande: Design av ett crossmediakoncept2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis we present the procedures and outcomes of adopting two roles in a study: the role of a researcher and the role of a designer. The subject is crossmedia design. Crossmedia is a growing and changing trend for media producers of today its design is of great importance. The purpose is to create a concept from scratch that stands out from the crowd and engage people with the use of cross media as the approach. We also aim to investigate if a cross media designer can rely on previous research made within this subject or if the scene has changed.

In order to test and to fully understand the process of the subject, we designed a crossmedia concept, based upon previous and related research. We employ a qualitative and exploratory approach informed by recent developments in action design research. We will then review our results by analysing which medium, digital or analogue, was the most successful and how the audience and the general media embraced the concept.

Att presentera information i virtuell verklighet: En studie om var och hur information bör presenteras i virtuell verklighet vid användning av en fordonssimulator.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When talking about how to present information in virtual reality, the possibilities are countless, but there are also many problems surrounding the spatial location of the information. This study aims to examine where and how the instructions in a vehicle training simulator should be presented in a future implementation of the interface in virtual reality. To find this out, a gameplay was created in which four different placements of the instructions were made. Three options were based on earlier studies made by Smith (2015) and Jose (2016) and the fourth was based on the existing information in the vehicle training simulator. These gameplays were presented as a movie to a number of interviewees and followed up by questions after each movie. The interviewees were asked to give the movies three ratings from 1-5, valuing how they perceived the presentation of the instructions. To get further opinions, comments was collected from the interviewees throughout each session. In this two ways, we got answers to which of the four options the interviewees thought was best. The study showed that there were two options that stood out among the others and both were based on the concept of a head-up display, also known as a HUD. One was represented in the bottom of the windshield and the other one in the top. The result of which one of them who were perceived as best is too close to say, although the study is considered to have reached its goal, which was to help the developers on their way to a decision that will eventually be implemented.
