    Jämförande retorikanalys av tre av den spanske kungen Juan Carlos den förstes jultal, närmare bestämt hans första från 1975, jultalet efter statskuppen 1981 och hans i skrivande stund senaste från 2012. Talen presenteras i sin historiska kontext som jultal i en tid av ekonomisk och politisk kris samt i sin retoriska situation som tv-sända jultal till spanska folket i Spanien och övriga världen. Uppsatsens syfte är att ta fram några av de retoriska figurer som kungen använt i syfte att få fram budskapet på bästa sätt, att visa på arvet från Franco gällande Spanien som en traditionell, katolsk monarki, samt hur kungen enar det spanska folket kring en tradition i juletid.

    Abstract [en]

    Ensuring access to equal education is more complex than adopting remote teaching approaches. International reactions to Covid-19 included closing physical schools and moving teaching online. This has created learning challenges for newly arrived refugees and immigrants, and teaching challenges for their teachers. On 18 March 2020, language teaching for post-compulsory school-aged refugees and immigrants moved to remote teaching. This paper investigates this move. Through semi-structured interviews, we investigated how teachers attempted to assure equal access to these language courses and their perception of their students’ experiences of this shift. We found that many of the teachers’ students were inexperienced computer users. We also found that the teachers perceived that their students’ feelings of isolation from society increased, and that this in turn reduced their abilities to access the education being offered. Remote teaching is not sufficient on its own to support the social function of these courses. However, the interviewed teachers are highly creative teachers. For example, they kept trialling combinations of a wide range of communication possibilities including visiting students at home and holding outdoor meetings. In these ways they created an instantiation of agency that may have encouraged students. These actions suggest avenues for future research and potential ways of ameliorating the educational challenges created by the sudden move to teaching online.

    Abstract [en]

    A qualitative study conducted by semi-structured interviews with youth recreation leaders in a city in Västerbotten’s county in Sweden. The aim is to establish a greater knowledge regarding the youth recreation leader’s experiences of Swedish teenagers’ (17-25) reasons of use of multi-ethnical language among the teenagers, specifically with focus on certain categories as calques, slang words, non-inversion and broad generalization of prepositions. Previous studies from earlier years of the 2000’s have been set in the Southern parts of Sweden as cities as Göteborg, Malmö and Borås – which makes this survey relevant as a way of broadening the knowledge regarding multi-ethnical language among youths in Sweden. The survey was conducted at two youth recreation centres with four youth recreation leaders. The result supports that there are similarities with the slang words and calques used by young people in Southern parts of Sweden as in the Northern – just as some words seem to differ. The common understanding among the participating youth recreation leaders of why the youth recreation centres’ teenagers choose to speak multi-ethnical language is to mark group identity, as a camouflaging pseudo-language to exclude others as adults – or to show more affiliations in relations with closer friends.

    Inom den systemisk-funktionella grammatiken delas modalitet in i fyra olika modalitetstyper. De är SANNOLIKHET, VANLIGHET, FÖRPLIKTELSE och VILLIGHET. I denna kontrastiva studie undersöks hur de tre svenska modalverben böra, skola och kunna tagna ur en svensk nutidsroman kan klassificeras i dessa modalitetstyper. Därefter undersöks hur de svenska modalverben har översatts i den tyska utgåvan av romanen. Målet med denna undersökning är att ta reda på om det finns någon regelbundenhet i vilket tyskt modalverb som används i översättningen av ett visst modalverb inom en viss modalitetstyp. Resultatet av denna studien är att det inte går att påvisa ett helt entydigt mönster som kan kopplas till ett enskilt modalverb och en särskild modalitätstyp. Däremot ses tendenser som kan undersökas närmre med hjälp av ytterligare data.

    Detta är en undersökning om huruvida faktaböcker för barn är jämställda eller inte. Syftet är att undersöka moderna faktaböcker för barn ur ett genusperspektiv genom att studera böckernas texter på lexikal nivå och textnivå samt genom att studera bilderna. I tre olika nyligen utgivna faktaböcker varav en handlar om kroppen, en om rymden och en om dinosaurier, har jag räknat antal ord som syftar på kvinnor och män, analyserat vilka roller de orden får med hjälp av den systemisk-funktionella grammatikens ideationella metafunktion samt gett en snabb inblick i hur mycket kvinnor och män syns på böckernas bilder. Genom att göra detta hoppas jag få svar på huruvida faktaböckerna framställer en jämställd bild av kvinnor och män eller inte. Resultatet visar att ord som syftar på män används betydligt oftare än ord som syftar på kvinnor och dessutom beskrivs orden som syftar på män mer utförligt än orden som syftar på kvinnor. Ord som syftar på män får oftare rollen som förstadeltagare, alltså den aktiva i satsen, medan ord som syftar på kvinnor oftare får rollen som andradeltagare, alltså den som påverkas av skeendet i satsen. Bilderna visar att verkliga män som lever eller har levt ofta syns på foton och illustrationer, medan inga verkliga kvinnor som lever eller har levt syns på bild. Faktaböckerna presenterar därmed på en ojämställd bild där män framställs som aktiva samt synliggörs på bilder medan kvinnor framställs som mindre aktiva samt osynliggörs då de inte syns på bilder i lika hög grad som männen.

    This article deals with the bilingual nature of the Old Swedish manuscripts. A quick survey shows that the Swedish manuscript sources from the Middle Ages not easily can be divided into a Latin and a vernacular part. Of course there are manuscripts written entirely in Latin, and manuscripts written entirely in Swedish, but many miscellaneous manuscripts contain texts both in Swedish and Latin. Even in Latin manuscripts we can find Swedish words and phrases incorporated with the Latin texts, and even more common are Latin words and phrases incorporated with the Swedish texts. The article gives a sketch describing the mix between the two languages on both manuscript and textual level, and the article tries to interpret this fact from a social point of view. The scriptorium was in the Middle Ages bilingual. The writers could choose to use the learned language, Latin, or the language of the lay people, the verna-cular. The choice of language was made deliberately, depending on for example, the content of the text, the presumed audience of the text, the patron of the text etc. But even when the writers had made their choice, the bilingualism of the society revealed itself, maybe deliberately, for example to emphasize something ideological, maybe just as a slip of the pen.

    This book is about the Swedish manuscript culture in the Middle Ages. The primary aim is to discuss how different types of manuscripts written in the vernacular were used in the Swedish Middle Ages. A secondary aim is to discuss different methods of analysis for the interpretation of a manuscript culture.

    Twenty miscellaneous manuscripts are analyzed from a New Philological point of view. The analyses deal with both the understanding of the content as a whole in a medieval manuscript, and the interpretation of the codicology. The analyses show that the aim and functions of manuscripts can be traced by a close reading of formal texts as rubrics, introductions and conclusions. They also show that the layout of a manuscript is related to its use. For instance, layout and certain formula words can tell us whether the manuscripts is intended for silent reading or for a listening audience.

    The importance of analysing a manuscript as a whole is stressed throughout the book. This is the only way we can learn to understand the role of individual manuscripts in the Middle Ages. The book also points to the need for editions of whole manuscripts in the future. Without these we may never understand why a given manuscript was written.

    During the fifteenth century, the cult of Virgin Mary was at its peak in Sweden, as well as all over the Western world. This article discusses the manifestation of the learned cult within Swedish popular culture in this period by analyzing contemporary prayers and art works from Swedish parish churches. The texts and the visual arts are discussed with reference to Speculum Virginum (5th chap.), an important didactic work that was translated from Latin to Old Swedish during the second half of the fifteenth century. It is clear that the arguments found in the popular cult of Virgin Mary are much simpler and more dogmatic, than in the learned cult. Nevertheless themes from the learned cult are frequently used in vernacular prayers and in the visual arts, especially as seen in the praise of Virgin Mary as intercessor. Probably this had something to do with St. Birgitta of Sweden and her revelations that made a strong impact on Swedish late medieval church life.

    The literacy and learning that can be attributed to the female convent at Vadstena Abbey have not been yet thoroughly investigated, a lacuna this book aims to remedy. Through an analysis of the social community and a close reading of the texts transmitted by Cod. Holm. A 3, a significant manuscript used in the convent for table reading, this study dis¬cusses the textual world that structured the nuns’ life at Vadstena Abbey and thus attempts for the first time to take seriously the learning of the nuns of Vadstena.

    The first part of the book deals with the literacy events that were significant for the female convent, then turns to the literacy competences that can be found among the nuns of Vadstena Abbey, and finally describes the form of education the sisters could receive. The convent was literate, in both a professional and a pragmatic perspective. Many nuns were able to read and write in vernacular, some also in Latin. If only occasional examples of literate women at the convent are known before 1450, it appears that the literacy competence then increased signific¬antly, a situation which suggests that the nuns may have learned to read and eventually to write in the monastery under the supervision of a mentor.

    The learning of the nuns was marked by the mystical movement of the second half of the 15th century. This can be shown by an analysis not only of the works the sisters read but also of the textual structure of the monastic readings at the female convent. The auctoritates quoted in these texts taught the nuns in exegetical questions and ideological issues im¬portant for the Birgittines. Knowledge of the monastic virtues was of considerable importance in this education, especially humility which was explored in nearly all texts read in the convent.

    The second part of the book offers a close reading of a table reading manuscript which was produced in the beginning of the 16th century. This manuscript proved to be very important for the nunnery’s intellectual context as the daily read¬ings during the meals were an opportu¬nity for the monastery to emphasize ideologies and beliefs that the nuns should support. The table readings followed an old ritual as many of the texts that should be read were copied from older manuscripts. But notwithstanding their textual tradition, the texts to be preferred were obviously didactic and intended to educate the nuns. These texts must be seen as a bridge between the beliefs of the collectivity and the nuns’ private worshipping. There is in these texts a meditative tone which concurred to place the concrete daily routines and duties into an abstract Christological frame.

    This book is an edition of Cod. Holm. A 3, a manuscript from Vadstena abbey containing the Birgittine sisters’ official table readings in Old Swedish, i.e., official text to be read aloud during meal time at the sisters’ convent. The manuscript is dated 1502 according to its prologue, and is written by four different hands. The main scribes are known by their names, Katharina Gudhmundi and Anna Girmundi (both were nuns in the abbey). Maybe one of the anonymous hands may be the manuscript’s corrector, Elseby Gjordsdotter. The manuscript was commissioned by the abbess Anna Fickesdotter.

    The manuscript, composed of 156 parchment leaves written on two columnist, contains 98 different texts, complete or partial, of devotion, such as Saint Birgitta’s Revelations, commentaries on the Bible, Old Swedish translations of the well-known mystics Henrik Suso and Mechthild of Hackeborn, Saints lives and the like. Most of the texts are copied from older manuscripts that were owned by the sisters’ convent at Vadstena abbey. The introduction to this edition provides a codicological description of the manuscript together with a presentation of its content.

    The edition itself follows the manuscript as close as possible. To each folio and each line of the manuscript corresponds a page and a line in the edition. In addition the medieval interpunctuation is edited and the text is not normalised.

    The text is completed by a critical apparatus which supplies the following information: scribal mistakes, identification of the citations of the Bible and the auctoritates, detailed codicological information, variant readings from other manuscripts containing the same texts as Cod. Holm. A 3.

    Svenska som andraspråk är alltid omdebatterat men finns just nu som ett eget ämne med egen kursplan på ungdomsgymnasiet. Den här studien undersöker hur fem undervisande lärare i gymnasieämnet svenska som andraspråk ser på ämnet; vilka för-och nackdelar som finns, hur det organiseras på olika skolor samt hur behovet av SVA ämnet ser ut och hur lärarna tror att framtiden kommer att se ut. Metoden som valts för att genomföra studien är semi-strukturerade kvalitativa intervjuer med fem undervisande lärare på olika gymnasieskolor och i olika kommuner i norra Sverige. Fördelar som lärarna lyfte fram med att ha två separata svenskämnen är mindre elevgrupper, lägre tempo och ett material anpassat till eleverna. Nackdelar som framkom var en syn på ämnet som något med lägre status än SVE, för få engagerade kollegor och för lite utbildning/fortbildning av pedagoger i skolan. Alla deltagare i studien pratade enbart ur ett elevperspektiv när de diskuterade nödvändigheten av att ha SVA som eget ämne. De ansåg att det i dagsläget finns ett behov av att ha kurserna separerade, men några deltagare ansåg att organiseringen av hur detta ska lösas borde ses över. I framtiden tror lärarna att ämnet kommer att se ut ungefär som det gör för tillfället men att det kommer ske små förbättringar i och med ett förmodat ökat elevantal under de kommande åren.

    Abstract [en]

    In this thesis a comparison is being made between two different translations into Swedish of the Italian novel Lessico famigliare by Natalia Ginzburg from 1963. The first translation (Familjen) was published in 1981 and was made by Ingalisa Munck and the second (Familjelexikon) was made by Johanna Hedenberg and published in 2021. Due to the limited scope of the project, samples to be studied based on qualitative analysis have been chosen from the source text. The main focus has been on the strategies employed by the translators when it comes to culturespecific elements, how they have chosen to deal with dialects and idiolects in the novel, and how they have chosen to deal with foreign words in the text. Some other aspects have also been taken into account, such as rhythm and structure of the text for instance. One aim has been to see if it were possible to discern to what extent, on the basis of the chosen strategies, the translated texts could be considered as adapted to the receiving culture (strategy of acceptability) or as preserving the languageculture of the source text. However, great attention has also been directed towards other factors such as differences due to the time span between the two translations or the individuality of the translator.

             The analysis has shown that both of the translators show tendencies to move between the above-described attitudes toward the original text, but that the translation by Munck from 1981 shows less adherence to the original text and a more open attitude to freer translation alternatives. The most obvious example of this is the total restructuring of portions of the source text, reconstruction of sentences and formation of new paragraphs. The translation by Hedenberg demonstrates a will to adhere the source text in all these respects, sometimes also replicating its musicality, rhythm and alliterations. However, as shown by the comparison between individual examples, elements of the two attitudes can be found in both translations. It is not possible to reach a full conclusion based on a qualitative analysis. 

             Furthermore, the rendition of foreign words suggests that the translators have been working with different types of model readers in mind: Munck with a reader that values the mixing of languages in the novel and the rendering of the bourgeoise Italian culture of the Levi family (and/or with a greater comprehension of French) and Hedenberg with a reader with a greater interest in understanding the text without being disturbed by elements of French in the dialogue – and/or with a lesser knowledge of the French language.

             Based primarily on the treatment the word “negro”, observations were made about the ageing of translations and the taboos they can reveal in a specific culture.

    Abstract [en]

    Revoicing Sámi narratives investigates the relationship between storytellers, contexts and collective tradition, based on an analysis of North Sámi narratives published in the early 1900s. This dissertation “revoices” narratives by highlighting the coexistence of different voices or socio-ideological languages in repertoires and by considering Sámi narratives as utterances by storytellers rather than autonomous products of tradition. Thus, this study serves as an act of “revoicing,” of recovering voices that had been silenced by the scientific discourse which enveloped their passage into print.

    Narrators considered “tradition bearers” were interviewed or wrote down folk narratives that were interpreted as representative of a static, dying culture. The approach chosen in this thesis highlights the dynamic and conscious choices of narrative strategies made by these storytellers and the implications of the discourses expressed in narration. By taking into account the intense context of social change going on in Sápmi at the time the narratives emerged, as well as the context that includes narrators, ethnographers and tradition, the analysis demonstrates that storytelling is an elaboration that takes place in negotiation with tradition, genres and individual preferences.

    The repertoires of four storytellers are studied according to a methodological framework consisting in critical discourse analysis from a folkloristic perspective. The analysis underscores the polyphony of the narratives by Johan Turi, who related with skillfulness of tradition by taking position as a conscious social actor. This study also investigates the repertoires of storytellers Ellen Utsi, Per Bær and Isak Eira who were interviewed by the

    Norwegian “lappologist” Just K. Qvigstad. Their contributions to his extensive collection of Sámi narratives express their relation to tradition and to the heteroglossia that surrounded them. Based on a receptionalist approach, this dissertation investigates the implications of these narratives for the North Sámi community at the turn of the twentieth century.

    Storytelling appears to have had a set of functions for community members, from the normative as regards socialization, information and warning against dangers to the defensive with the elaboration of a discourse about solidarity, identity and empowerment.

    This article explores processes of place-making through the study of the linguistic landscape of a small-size town in Northern Sweden. The analysis of signs is used as a tool for examining the role and visibility of actors in the landscape. For this purpose, we examine who the authors are, what forms of multilingualism can be observed, and who has agency in the place-making of the public space. Our documentation consists of photos and fieldnotes from observations, encounters, and conversations with people during ethnographic fieldwork in 2019. Using a mixed-methods approach, all signs were first analysed quantitatively according to the categories of authors and function. Regression analysis was used to explore correlations between the categories. Secondly, multilingual signs were analysed qualitatively regarding their function and purpose in relation to their contexts. Our results illustrate a city centre with a strong presence of the Swedish language. Multilingual signs target specific groups and are intended for information, advertisement, rules and regulations; moreover, our findings indicate that the opportunities for private actors to influence the linguistic landscape are limited. The form of multilingualism in this context—visible multilingualism present mainly through English—is different from the one we can see in the socio-demographic data.

    Il piccolo mondo paesano: osservazioni traduttologiche sulla traduzione svedese de Il sarto della stradalunga di Giuseppe Bonaviri

    Il  presente lavoro si basa sull’analisi traduttologica del romanzo Il sarto della stradalunga di Giuseppe Bonaviri, pubblicato nel 1954 a Torino. Il lavoro vuole analizzare e mettere in risalto le strategie traduttive utilizzate nel passaggio dall’italiano allo svedese, in particolare riguardo agli elementi culturospecifici (realia). La traduzione utilizzata per l’analisi è quella di Ulla Åkerström, intitolata Skräddaren på långa gatan del 1991.

    L’ipotesi iniziale è che un lettore svedese sia spinto alla lettura di questo tipo di romanzo tanto dall’ambientazione quanto dalla trama e dai temi globali. La traduttrice avrebbe dunque individuato come componente più importante della sua traduzione il cronotopo geografico, rendendolo in questo modo la dominante del metatesto. Al contrario, nel prototesto l’ambientazione avrebbe un ruolo più subordinato rispetto alla trama e al cronotopo psicologico.

    Lo studio si suddivide in tre parti: la prima parte offre dei cenni biografici sull’autore sulla traduttrice. Nella seconda parte si esaminano la struttura e le caratteristiche linguistiche del libro, e si verificano inoltre alcuni aspetti in cui la traduzione svedese si discosta o meno dalla versione originale riguardo ai realia. La traduzione viene analizzata secondo metodi e parametri traduttologici, in particolar modo per quanto riguarda la resa dei termini culturospecifici, impliciti culturali, traduzione di nomi e toponimi. È stato quindi necessario analizzare in via preliminare le dominanti e le sottodominanti (gerarchia delle dominanti) del testo, formulare ipotesi operative riguardo al lettore modello di prototesto e metatesto, studiare le strategie traduttive rilevanti soprattutto per quanto riguarda la resa dei realia e contestualizzare quanto osservato. Infine, nella terza e ultima parte, si sviluppa e commenta l’analisi traduttologica effettuata. 

    La conclusione che sembra emergere è che la traduttrice abbia scelto di utilizzare una strategia maggiormente volta all’adeguatezza per alcuni realia connessi alla campagna e ai luoghi, ma una strategia volta più all’accettabilità per tutti gli altri tipi di realia.

    This research examines the effects of vowel quality (high vs. low) and postvocalic place of articulation (labial, dental, velar) on the relative timing of syllable-internal components, concentrating on the duration of prevocalic consonants. Results indicate that the duration of a prevocalic consonant tends to approximate compensate for the inherent duration of a following vowel. And although postvocalic place of articulation was not found to affect the duration of a prevocalic consonant in a CVC syllable, a relatively an inverse relationship was observed between the duration of a vowel and postvocalic consonant. These effects lead to durational patterns for the rhyme which result in a relatively stable overall syllable duration.

    Abstract [en]

    Aiming to facilitate the description and evaluation of rhetorical responses to security issues, a framework was developed for comparative analysis of oral and written presentations. The framework was applied on three speeches held by the Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson and three speeches by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in the wake of the terrorist attacks on World Trade Center and Pentagon on September 11 and the subsequent military operation in Afghanistan.

    The framework was based on four narrative structures, referred to as images. The image of aggression was used to describe the speaker’s interpretation of a dramatic event, the image of threat to describe his consideration of the security threat and the image of securitisation to analyse solutions suggested in relation to the threat. The image of communication, finally, was used to describe relations between the speaker and his audience appearing in the speeches. Each image included an actor, an act or event, a referent object to the act and time and space. The images were analysed as discrete parts and also by an integrating approach. In the analysis, descriptions of the images were related to rhetorical tools, including logos, pathos, ethos, identification, vividness and agency.

    The analyses revealed similarities and dissimilarities between the two speakers. As for similarities, Persson and Putin used similar topoi. Persson used democracy – terrorism whereas Putin preferred civilisation – terrorism/barbarism, and both used cooperation. To both speakers, the images of aggression and threat tended to appeal to pathos and identification, and the image of securitisation and communication to logos and ethos. As for dissimilarities, Persson relied on the UN whereas Putin offered direct help to the US operation. In Persson’s speeches, the predominant topos was cooperation, in Putin’s civilisation – terrorism/barbarism. Persson focused on democratic values, Putin on the fight against terrorism. Persson’s images were more elaborated and vivid, Putin’s more moderate. These dissimilarities were tentatively explained by the two speakers’ different individual styles and domestic situations and, most important, by the speakers’ different agency on the international arena.

    In essence, the present framework, based on four discrete images, was found to be well-suited for cross-cultural analysis of rhetorical responses to security issues. The similarities exceeded the dissimilarities, which led to the conclusion that rhetoric of security politics may be defined as a discrete rhetorical genre. A bi-polar world view pervaded the rhetoric, preventing long-term solutions to security issues. Instead a focus on cooperation topoi, nuanced information, and the means and ends of securitisation was suggested.

    This is a study of Language learning strategies and how, why and when they are used in a group of four adult Hungarian learners of Swedish as second language.The empirical data is collected through qualitative interviews, which are analysed through the prism of factors listed in Rebecca Oxford’s Strategic Inventory of Language Learning (SILL). In the final stage of the analysis the findings are discussed in relation to Griffiths (2003, 2013, 2018) categories base-, core, and plus strategies.The results indicate that the learners both on individual and group level make use of a broad range of learning strategies, in a way which is consistent with advanced learners. All learners have lived outside of Sweden and a Swedish speaking context for years, but the results show that a number of learning strategies are still in use in order to keep linguistic competence.

    The main purpose of this study was to examine the classroom, teacher and student factors distinguishing grade three classes performing at higher levels than expected, in relation to socioeconomic status (SES) and language factors, from classes performing below their potential with regard to the same factors. Data from a standardized reading comprehension test and student and teacher questionnaires covering teacher, classroom and student characteristics were collected. The participants were 1,092 grade three classes and their class teachers, from Stockholm, Sweden. By use of regression and a twin-matching procedure, one group of 94 underachieving classes and another group of 94 overachieving classes were formed for comparison. Data about extended voluntary reading, classroom climate, teacher experience and the use of authentic literature were seen to be the main four indicators discriminating between over- and underachieving classes beyond the impact of SES and language background.

    The thesis explores the form, function and sociolinguistic distribution of explicit apologies in the spoken part of the British National Corpus. The sub-corpus used for the study comprises a spoken text mass of about five million words and represents dialogue produced by more than 1700 speakers, acting in a number of different conversational settings. More than 3000 examples of apologising are included in the analysis.

    Primarily, the form and function of the apologies are examined in relation to the type of offence leading up to the speech act. Aspects such as the sincerity of the apologies and the use of additional remedial strategies other than explicit apologising are also considered. Variations in the distributions of the different types of apologies found are subsequently investigated for the two independent variables speaker social identity (gender, social class and age) and conversational setting (genre, formality and group size). The effect of the speaker-addressee relationship on the apology rate and the types of apologies produced is also examined.

    In this study, the prototypical apology, a speech act used to remedy a real or perceived offence, is only one of a number of uses of the apology form in the corpus. Other common functions of the form include discourse-managing devices such as request cues for repetition and markers of hesitation, as well as disarming devices uttered before expressing disagreement and controversial opinions.

    Among the speaker social variables investigated, age and social class are particularly important in affecting apologetic behaviour. Young and middle-class speakers favour the use of the apology form. No substantial gender differences in apologising are apparent in the corpus. I have also been able to show that large conversational groups result in frequent use of the form. Finally, analysis of the effects of the speaker-addressee relationship on the use of the speech act shows that, contrary to expectations based on Brown & Levinson’s theory of politeness, it is the powerful who tend to apologise to the powerless rather than vice versa.

    The study implies that formulaic politeness is an important linguistic marker of social class and that its use often involves control of the addressee.

    Internationally, virtual world environments such as Second Life® (SL) have become accepted as platforms for innovative educational activities at many universities in recent years. One such activity includes innovative ways of students coming in contact with other students in so-called telecollaborations. The present case study explores the initial stages in an Action Research process, namely the design and initial implementation of a telecollaborative language learning activity between four universities in Second Life under the EU-funded Avalon project. The chapter describes how theoretical frameworks including the Ecology of Language Learning (van Lier, 2004), the Five Stage Model of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (Salmon, 2004) and Activity Theory (Leont'ev, 1978) were used in order to address different aspects of the design of the course. Based on questionnaire responses from students and observations, the chapter then goes on to evaluate the relative success/failure of the first course trial. Finally, the chapter discusses the implications of the lessons learnt from this pilot project on further developments of the course concept in the action research process, and goes on to discuss implications of the findings for the use of virtual worlds in more mainstream educational settings.

    This paper explores sociolinguistic variation in the frequency of apologising in the spoken part of the British National Corpus. The starting point for the investigation is the apology formula, represented by the lexemes afraid, apologise, apology, excuse, forgive, pardon, regret and sorry. The sub-corpus used for the study comprises a spoken text mass of about five million words and represents dialogue produced by more than 1700 speakers acting in a number of different conversational settings. More than 3000 examples of apologising form the basis for the analysis. In the BNC, young and middle-class speakers favoured the use of the apology form. Only minor gender differences in apologising were apparent. The study implies that formulaic politeness is an important linguistic marker of social class and also shows that corpus linguistic methodology can successfully be used in socio-pragmatic research.

    The paper explores the quantity and quality of communication produced by teachers in Internet courses of academic English, particularly during the initial stages of course activity. The courses are entirely conducted in virtual learning environments without physical meetings, and are part of the Bachelor programme (A–C level) of English at Mid Sweden University. The pedagogic design of the courses is based on collaborative learning, which presupposes a communicative environment with positive interdependence and interaction, where knowledge is shared by students questioning and challenging each other. Consequently, the teacher’s role in setting communicative norms which encourage an environment of high acceptance, where students feel that they can express their opinions freely, is of utmost importance. The results suggest that there are two important factors that affect student activity in the initial stages of an online course: how much the teacher communicates with the class and the manner in which he or she does so.

    In a case study a University class undertook a translation from Swedish to English in a keystroke logging environment and then replayed their translations in pairs while discussing their thought processes when undertaking the translations, and why they made particular choices and changes to their translations.Computer keystroke logging coupled with peer-based intervention assisted the students in discussing how they worked with their translations, and enabled them to see how their ideas relating to the translation developed as they worked with the text. The process showed that Computer Keystroke logging coupled with peer-based intervention has potential to (1) support student reflection and discussion around their translation tasks, and (2) enhance student motivation and enthusiasm for translation.

This course activated learners and educators using a variety of support media including Marratech, an online conferencing system, and Second Life, a virtual world platform. The pilot course formed part of a one year project sponsored by The Norwegian University program(NUV) entitled "A Virtual Platform for Life Long Learning". In addition to the description of the course framework, we contribute with the development of an evaluation framework that may be applied to other courses taught in Second Life.
