    Abstract [en]

    The American televangelist and healer Benny Hinn was invited to host three meetings at a Christian conference in Uppsala 2010. The hosting institution was the Swedish charismatic Christian denomination Livets Ord. Benny Hinn has been invited by them several times before, and it can be said he is popular in some parts of Christianity, but considered rather controversial in others. The invitation and the whole event spurred an online debate, mainly on blogs and Twitter, where Livets Ord and Benny Hinn were discussed and scrutinized. This article will focus on describing and analyzing how the event was perceived and evaluated, primarily in the digital media, before, during and after the event. The churches are currently attempting to reach new audiences through digital channels, and hope to support their adherents in their everyday life beyond the meetings and activities hosted at their physical church building. However, as seen in the article, entering the digital era is not always unproblematic or straight-forward. What is of particular interest here is how the digital media relocate the event – how this opens up a previously closed event, and potentially flattens out and questions traditional authorities.

    Abstract [en]

    The underlying question for this article is: – “is what is now happening online really new, and something never seen outside the internet, and before the internet?” Previous research has to a large extent emphasized the distinctive characteristics of internet culture, as separated from what is happening in the “real/physical” world. That is a approach also valid for how churches online have been seen, and there has been an established distinction between religion online (religious churches and representatives with an online presence), and online religion (religion conducted and practiced in an online environment). However, technical advantages in recent years (which also has changed our behavior online) has made this distinction more fluid and difficult to defend. But there is also a historical continuity of using modern media within the church, making it difficult to claim that contemporary transformations within the Christian sphere are unique. There are several historical examples of how media use changes religious faith and practices throughout time. This article will put digital churches into a contemporary and historical context in order to discuss if it is relevant to uphold a distinction between churches online vis-à-vis churches offline.

    Abstract [en]

    This article studies how the Laestadian movement (a Christian confessional revivalist movement that is sceptical of technology) uses digital media in general, and the internet in particular, in its work. In a time when churches on a large scale are concerned with how to communicate with people through digital media, the Laestadian movement choses another path, based upon other assumptions and choices. The focus here is on how congregations and representatives use digital media, and not on individual and private use, and this article will focus primarily on Sweden and Finland. Based on interviews with representatives and by mapping the congregations' online presence, this article provides an interpretation of the use of the internet within Laestadianism. Through this group, we see how ideology, faith, and practices regulate a restricted, negotiated, and conscious use of the internet, which challenges any preconceptions regarding use and effect of the internet on religion. This case study therefore gives additional perspective for understanding the role of digital media within and in relation to institutionalized Christianity.

    Abstract [en]

    Is the internet a means for individual empowerment and collective upheaval against oppressive powers, or is it a tool to monitor and control people in the hands of authoritarian rulers? This article addresses the “dyophysite” or what can be called the double nature of internet. That is a dualism that goes back to the origin of internet with its roots simultaneously in American West coast counterculture and the cold war militarism of the 1960s. Within the Christian community, this dualism plays out as the internet is viewed in a paradoxical matter. Even as cyberspace equips evangelicals to connect with other believers, it can introduce Christians to pagan ideas, tempting misbehavior and destructive communities.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper discusses the relation between information technology and religious values and practices, with a specific focus on Christian communities/Churches in the three-dimensional virtual world of Second Life (SL). In SL people meet for social reasons, go to concerts and museums, educate themselves, experiment with roles and identities and much more. People also seek Christian fellowship, participate in Church services, pray together, hang out with fellow Christians and so on. Their digital representations of the self, their avatars, conduct "on-line religion", to use Christopher Helland's well-used characteristic, i.e. are involved and interact with religious activities purely online (2005). People participate in religious activities to a large extent in similar ways as in the physical world, but with some media-related characteristics, which will be discussed here.

    Abstract [en]

    In summer 2012, the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden appeared on Twitter. There was only one problem – it was not the Archbishop himself who was tweeting, but an anonymous person. A discussion then ensued on Twitter and in the blogosphere between those in favor of the Archbishop and his department and mainly social media proponents.

    The present article describes and analyzes the social media debate, and how authority and hierarchies are negotiated in and through social media. The analysis is based on Heidi Campbell’s “Religious-Social Shaping of Technology” model, and emphasizes the need to take into account not only the faith and tradition of the religious actor, but also the societal context in which the negotiating process takes place. In this case, the concepts of “media- tization” and “secularization” are used to understand the broader context of the process.

    This study aims to construct a typology of the visual style of Christian spaces in the online vir-tual world of Second Life (SL). Virtual worlds offer diverse new possibilities for architecturalstyle, unrestricted by gravity, weather or scarcity of materials. These new regions also operatelargely beyond the control and indeed awareness of established religious authorities, so they canalso offer users new opportunities to reconsider the social structure of their communities. Thisresearch project aims to survey religious responses to these new potential freedoms. Research todate on religion in SL has focused on small samples of spaces or activity, but we found 114Christian spaces. An overwhelming number of the locations we visited featured a Christianchurch building. 81 of 114 included a church building that reproduced a recognizable offlinearchitectural style, and only 9 included a church with an entirely different style. Only 15 Chris-tian locations had buildings that cannot be characterised as churches.

    This article focuses on the relationship between the members of a local fire brigade in Sweden and their tools, as well as the organisational dynamics that forge this relation. Drawing on the work of Karen Barad [2007. Meeting the universe halfway. Quantum physics and the entanglement of matter and meaning. Durham: Duke University Press], and particularly her notion of intra-action, the intention is to unpick the strong material and symbolic relationship between men, masculinity and tools seen in this profession. While Barad’s work has been useful within feminist theories, few attempts have been made to investigate how her work can benefit critical studies of men and masculinities, one exception being Ulf Mellström [2016. From a hegemonic politics of masculinity to an ontological politics of intimacy and vulnerability? Ways of imagining through Karen Barad's work. Rhizomes, 30. Retrieved from http://www.rhizomes.net/issue30/mellstrom.html] who explores how intimacy may be productive in developing more nuanced understandings of masculinities. Inspired by this approach, this article explores how using Barad’s notion of intra-action as an analytical tool can facilitate a deeper exploration of men’s intimate relationships with technologies. The intra-action between the members of the local fire brigade and their firefighting tools is not a one-off encounter, but takes place continuously. Hence, while a tool – in a specific situation – becomes an integral part of the body and the identity of a group of people, it requires constant maintenance in order to accomplish successful fire extinctions.

    This poster will present the methodology behind the creation of a linguistic corpus based on a subset of the 2007 International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media dataset. Posts from a small group of political bloggers were tagged for parts of speech and indexed into a corpus using the program Xairia. From this corpus, the political blogger subset will be investigated for register and referential information. Referential information,especially with regards to new and given information, will be compared against network placement both to identify network innovators as well as to compare network placement as a catalyst for innovation. The final section, Further Research, will outline the modifications necessary for the creation of a full-scale corpus based on the entire ICWSM 2006 dataset.

    Abstract [en]

    Contrary to the utopian expectation that the Internet will lift the poor out of squalor, erase differences and finally let men and women compete on equal footing, there are clear power differences present online. In many online interactions, anonymity is being abandoned in favor of real profiles, community building and networking. Once this anonymity has been abandoned, however, members of these communities must negotiate ways of interacting with one another. Often online communication among members of the same community is a seamless discourse between parties. Exploration of the points at which these interactions break down can provide valuable insight into the underlying culture of the community. This paper will explore underlying structures of gender and power through a sociolinguistic analysis of the weblog discourse surrounding the Kathy Sierra death threat case.

    The YouTube video sharing site is used by huge numbers of young people in the roles of consumers as well as producers of content and meaning. The site hosts an extremely large amount of video clips, and its users represent a wide variety of nationalities, religions, ethnic backgrounds, identities and lifestyles. These facts make it hard to see how a tangible sense of actual community could be created within the site. Using on- and offline ethnographic data in the form of footage, interviews and patterns of community interaction (favoriting, subscribing, commenting, rating, and video replies), this chapter presents the results of a case study that aims to analyze how a specific interest group with a certain national anchoring (Swedish parkour youth) deal with the vastness and complexity of YouTube in creating a sense of identity and community in relation to their specialized interest.
