A design process from a collaborative point of view: Exploring the importance of collaboration between designers and clients2009Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This essay studies the design process from a collaborative point of view. A literature study has been carried out with focus on design processes and collaborative design, where important concepts and notions are presented. A practical design process was carried out where the project was to create a station identification for Swedish Channel 9. The process was than retrospectively analyzed and broken down into a time-line describing the whole process from amongst other a collaborative point of view. Collaboration between designers and client is found to be very important for the final design. Constraints are considered important to force creativity and the ability to convey abstract thoughts over long distance channels such as e-mail is found to be important in order to overcome the spatial barrier that exists in many design processes today.

Adoption av en kommunikationslösning: En kvalitativ studie2014Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The modern workplace is dependent on effective communication in order for the employees to be able to execute their tasks. Despite this over half of the new communications-solutions that are inserted to handle an organizations communication needs fail. Therefore this study focuses on the adoption of communication-solutions in the context of the modern workplace. This with the intent of identifying factors that are central to the individuals’ adoption of new communication-solutions. To this end a qualitative study was done through semi-structured interviews with ten respondents from four different organizations that recently inserted a new communication-solution. The findings of this study points to three factors as central for the adoption of a communication-solution. These are the existing information ecology, education and motivation. Organization should consider these three factors in order to contribute to the individual workers successful adoption of a new communication-solution. Although this study has a limited scope, tendencies the point towards the three factors that has been identified as central for the adoption of a communication-solution can be observed. More research within this field is needed to confirm the findings of this study.

Värdet av ett innovationscenteri offentlig sektor: En explorativ fallstudie av Arbetsförmedlingens digitalainnovationscenter2017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 180 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The conditions for organizations today has fundamentally changed as a result of

digitalization and digital innovation processes has become a central part in an organization's

continued work to handle changing requirements and needs. Arbetsförmedlingens

Innovationscenter is a new department that has been established as a part of the authority’s

journey towards digital renewal with the ambition to visualize digital opportunity for

tomorrow's labour market. A knowledge gap has been identified concerning how a public

organization through an innovation initiative manage the continuously increasing

expectations for them to work innovative and digitally. To close this gap an explorative case

study is conducted to study the role Innovationscenter plays in Arbetsförmedlingens work

with digital innovation. A conceptual framework is then created based on research on value

creation and innovation processes which is then used to study the empiricism. The study

shows that Innovationscenters role is mainly one of external monitoring, organisational

development and marketing. The conclusion is that Innovationscenter spends more time

inspiring than innovating and argumentation is presented concerning the importance of

creating the relevant structures to go from inspiration to innovation.

Multi-dimensional focus of IT Strategic approach for Value Co-creation: A study of customer’s experience in online banking service system2013Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Service-dominant logic is the co-creation of value-in-use with service systems resources and customers. This study aims to approach strategy for value co-creation process from customer’s perspectives on self-service technology. For that, a case study was conducted about the customer’s experiences on creating the values when using the online banking service. The thesis begins with the introduction about the potential of IT in service-dominant logic with service systems, related literature and theoretical framework of value co-creation as value-in-use/value co-destruction. Further, this study has analyzed the risk factors, challenges and complexities that occurred in service systems in the perspective of value-in-use/value co-destruction. Based on the findings, I have approached the multi-dimensional focus of IT strategic (flexibility, comfortability, effective information entity and customer-centric network) approach to increase customer participation in value co-creation process. This approach could be helpful to improve the quality of service systems in self-service technology and to understand customer’s reality during value creation process.

Digital Transformation in Banking: Exploring Value Co-Creation in Online Banking Services in India2019Ingår i: Journal of Global Information Technology Management, ISSN 1097-198X, Vol. 22, nr 1, s. 7-24Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Information Technology (IT) use has the potential to enhance firms' capacity to build and sustain competitive advantages. Though a rich literature notes how IT use continues to change the nature, scale, and scope of service delivery, surprisingly few studies have addressed the digital transformation processes through which the introduction of new IT-enabled online services are introduced in firms and industries. To address this issue, we identify and examine the processes through which IT may create or impair business value in service processes. To theorize these processes, we adopt a service-dominant logic perspective that views the customer as a co-creator of firm value and analyze some observed risks, tensions, and socio-technical challenges associated with the introduction of an online banking service system in India. Drawing on the findings, we present implications for IT strategy research and discuss in particular how firms can avoid unexpected value destruction when they increase customer participation in the delivery of online services to create value.

A model for strategic e-service implementation in the public sector: challenges for local governments in identifying potential candidates for e-service delivery2010Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

As more and more local governments begin to understand that the great promises of e-service delivery are harder than expected to realize, efficient use of ICT-resources have become increasingly important. Since simply providing more e-services is not the solution, the need to understand what constitutes a suitable e-service has arisen. Public services reach beyond the market domain; therefore, the complexities of public value must be dealt with when services are appraised. Furthermore, due to the heterogeneous nature of local government services it is impossible to evaluate all the options in depth; thus, there is a clear need for early-stage appraisal. However, existing methods of appraisal are burdened by intricacy, and associated with high costs. In response, this paper presents a model capable of reducing this intricacy. The model was developed through a participatory design process involving members on both operational and strategic level in the municipality of Skellefteå. The model implements state of the art into the workspace context while taking measures to reduce intricacy such as: incremental filtering, moving high intricacy elements to the end of the process, and exploitation of available data. As a result the organization is enabled to capture not only the low hanging fruit, but also the long tail of services. Furthermore, the improved understanding of e-service delivery has the potential to open up opportunities for new ways of business development and private-public partnerships. Finally, whereas the model presented is highly context-dependent, the implications outlined in this paper are not limited to this narrow scope.

Coordination from an Awareness perspective: Mechanisms and techniques for Awareness based Coordination support.2009Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

When a task becomes shared the need for coordination arises. One fundamental factor for coordination is awareness. This study aimed to answer the question of how awareness-based coordination support systems could increase the efficiency in the processing of tasks generated by the Customer Support Unit in Skellefteå municipality, ultimately creating a better work situation for the officers responsible for the handling of tasks and increasing the service level for the customers of their services. This question was answered by conducting interviews, observing system usage and through analysis of pre-existing interviews from earlier studies of the municipality’s CSU project. This study shows that there are aspects in the task management that are in need of coordination support and presents a task classification system based on the logistic nature of the task. Furthermore this paper identifies the main problems related to the current task management and from an awareness perspective discusses and outlines various mechanisms and techniques to address these problems. Alongside these problems the general lack of coordination support in the current Document and Workflow System (FlexiteBPMS) is approached. Furthermore all outlined proposals share the common aspiration of lessening the burden for the officers without simply shifting the workload onto other units in the workflow chain.

Digital transformation: the material roles of IT resources and their political uses2015Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

As IT became ubiquitous, we recognized that IT was everywhere but in our theories. Despite significant efforts, Information System (IS) research is still in desperate search for the IT artifact. Recent reviews show that IS research first and foremost considers IT resources as a socio-technical and managerial concern. Analyses of inertia are restricted to cognitive limitations or technical challenges of IT development and use as separate activities. Hence, IS research assumes that more development resources, extended training, and better management could turn most failures into success. In this thesis, I posit that IS strategy research often treats normal failure as unexpected to maintain the rational idea that managers are in control and that IT does not matter in and of itself. I argue that planned and convergent views of change work well under stable and unitary conditions but in this way fail to account for the complexity of current IS strategy practice. To substantiate this claim, I demonstrate how IS research routinely neglects the material IT use story in the context of digital transformation (DT) studies and social informatics. Political conflict is a constant theme in IS strategy implementation research, yet few studies provided explanation for the apprehension that managers and workers display during the introduction of new IT resources; even as most managers remain men I found also no study that theorized gender politics as related to IS strategy outcomes. I argue in particular that the IS fields routine adherence to borrowed assumptions about the pace, linearity, and sequence of radical change have limited IS scholars to marginally improve on received DT narratives in which IT plays little or no part as IT appears as an agent mostly before and after DT. Though much is said about how IT triggers and enables organizational change, the actual processes and mechanisms that underlies IS strategy change enactments are thus poorly understood. To examine how the material roles of IT resources and their political use can be captured and explained, I summarize and synthesize insights grounded in empirics from four appended research papers. In this way, I chart avenues for material theorizing of micro-affordances and institutions, and develop an IS strategy-as-practice lens that attends IT use as a material practice. After developing this lens, I discuss how material practice perspectives afford deep understanding of the materialities through which actors create, sustain, and transform organizational practice with digital material, and highlight some opportunities to observe the social consequences of IT use in the context of critical studies on men and masculinities and digital gender.

The revolution that wasn’t: Investigating barriers to platform-based e-service delivery partnerships2012Ingår i: Proceedings of the 45th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, Wailea, January 4-7, 2012, 2012Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In response to the increasing political and popular demand on e-government to deliver, governments have begun to seek out new, alternative forms of operation. One such development in the domain of e-government is the emergence of private-public partnerships (PPP). However, research on PPPs in the service layer of e- government is virtually silent. In this paper we argue that one possible approach to help close this gap is by investigating key partnership issues from a platform perspective. Building on a case study, and using this novel perspective, we identify three key barriers for developing platform-based partnerships for e-service delivery in local government: the bureaucratic barrier, the interface barrier and the business barrier. Based on experiences from this study, we also conclude that the platform approach have proven useful as a means to close the highlighted gap in research.

Towards efficient and effective e-service delivery: Addressing the challenges of e-service evaluation in local government2012Ingår i: Transformational Government through eGov: Socio-economic, Cultural, and Technological issues / [ed] Y. Dwivedi & M. Akhter & Norm Archer, UK: Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2012, s. 155-188Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: This study present and provide insight into the design of eVAL, an ex ante e-service evaluation model designed for use in local governments with the ambition of helping local governments overcome the challenges of e-service delivery.

Methodology: The evaluation model has been developed through participatory design research, which takes place within an overarching case study of a Swedish municipality.

Findings: This paper identifies three key challenges for e-service delivery and evaluation in the local government: managing intricacy, handling public value and forecasting take-up.

Research limitations/implications: This study stresses the need for researchers to give attention to the dilemma local governments are faced with, and provides a possible middle-way out of the debate on the appropriateness of traditional investment techniques in the public sector.

Practical implications: The importance of data and organizational capabilities for evaluation and successful implementation of e-services is stressed.

Originality/value: This study provides an insight into the challenges that local governments have to face as the attempt to implement e-services in an efficient and effective fashion, while at the same time presenting a novel evaluation model capable of addressing some of these challenges. Whereas evaluation models do exist, none of the models reviewed during design were found applicable in the context of local government.

Towards efficient and effective E-Service Delivery: Addressing the matter of intricacy in service evaluation2011Manuskript (preprint) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The great promises of e-government have proven to be harder than expected to realise. Effective and efficient e-service delivery is dependent on making sound choices as to which e- services to implement; consequently, accountability in the use of ICT-resources have become of increasing importance. This generates a need to identify what constitutes a suitable e-service, and to devise models capable of evaluating available options. As public services reach beyond the business rationale of the private sector, such considerations must deal with the complexity of public value. Additionally, due to the heterogeneous nature of local government it is not feasible to evaluate every candidate in depth. For e-service delivery to reach beyond major services governments must lower their demands for accuracy and implement more cost- efficient ways of estimating public value. This paper investigates how this can be achieved while maintaining satisfactory results, and builds an understanding of the challenges that local governments face in doing so.

    Digital gender: perspective, phenomena, practice2015Ingår i: First Monday, ISSN 1396-0466, E-ISSN 1396-0466, Vol. 20, nr 4Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Past research on gender online has made important land gains but under-theorizes the Internet as a passive, fixed, and somewhat insubstantial space or context. By contrast, this special issue draws on new material thinking to put into questions the very notion of “cyberspace” as a distinct realm. In this vein, the contents of this issue critically examine how the Internet and related digital technologies actively “work” to maintain or transform systems of oppression, as displayed, for example, in the digital doing(s) of gender. They also show how digital technologies and related concepts can be used to challenge current understandings of race, class, and gender and to produce and provoke new forms of knowledge. While the contents of this issue are drawn from different fields and display great diversity, the individual contributions of each author helps to chart out three potent venues for future Internet research: namely digital gender as perspective, phenomena, and practice.

    Abstract [en]

The ability to effectively and efficiently interact with the business environment is key to organizational success. To this end, organizations increasingly use IT to enable new, improved flows of information both within and across organizational boundaries. Social media (SM) technologies hold great potential for enabling new forms of communication with distant actors. For this potential to be fully realized, however, investments in technology should be made alongside changes in organizational practice and design. While all IT strategies should complement high-level organizational goals and identify the organizational changes necessary to realize them,1 this is particularly the case with SM strategy, as it necessarily challenges traditional forms of organizing and blurs organizational boundaries.

Information systems use as strategy practice: a multi-dimensional view of strategic information system implementation and use2014Ingår i: Journal of strategic information systems, ISSN 0963-8687, E-ISSN 1873-1198, Vol. 23, nr 1, s. 45-61Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Information systems (IS) are strategic in so far as they are used to realize strategic intent. Yet, while much has been said about aligning IS functionality with the strategic intent and how to organizationally implement strategically aligned systems, less is known of how to successfully implement strategic change associated with system use – a truly critical challenge within strategic IS implementation. Drawing on a strategy-as-practice perspective we address this gap by developing a multi-dimensional view of IS strategy, conceptualizing three key challenges in the IS strategy process, to explain how and why a paper mill, despite successfully implementing a strategic production management system, failed to produce intended strategic change. We call this outcome strategy blindness: organizational incapability to realize the strategic intent of implemented, available system capabilities. Using a longitudinal case study we investigate how cognitive rigidity of key actors and fixed, interrelated practices shaped the implementation of the new production system. We also identify core components and dynamics that constitute a richer multi-dimensional view of the IS strategy implementation (alignment) process. In particular, we identify three salient factors that contribute to strategy blindness – mistranslation of intent, flexibility of the IT artifact and cognitive entrenchment – and discuss how they affect strategic implementation processes. We conclude by discussing implications of our findings for IS strategy theory and practice, especially the contribution of strategy-as-practice to this stream of research.

Outflanking with information technology: a dialectic model of organizational transformationManuskript (preprint) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The information systems (IS) literature conveys two opposing narratives of how to create radical organizational transformation (OT) with information technology (IT): “Iron fist” scholars argue that such OT is best achieved by resolute leaders capable of driving episodic change by fiat, while “velvet glove” scholars posit that OT is best induced incrementally by compassionate leaders who nurture shared vision and minimize conflict. These narratives portray implicitly gendered management stereotypes and promote accounts of heroism. Built to celebrate deliberate managerial action, they also brush aside back-stage work necessary for successful IS strategy implementation and cast IT in the marginal role of a trigger for or enabler of OT. To address these shortcomings, we advance a dialectic model of OT that views IT as a material change agent. To synthesize insights from these opposing narratives of change, our dialectic model also interrogates dominant assumptions in received OT theory. The model is motivated by an unexpected and intriguing case of OT in a Swedish municipality where initially peripheral actors used IT to gradually bring about a much-contested radical change to the organization’s service logics. These actions resembled the military tactics founded on stealth and surprise that military leaders use to overcome overwhelming enemies; therefore, we term the new OT narrative “outflanking.” The narrative foregrounds three tactical IT uses—shielding, priming, and enrolling—that the actors deployed to overcome the opposition. As a result, we theorize that the role of novel IT uses is a necessary component of contemporary OT. Following a call for analyses of OT that recognize material effects of IT, the article concludes with a discussion of how managers can strike alliances with peripheral actors to render their organizations more dynamic, and how researchers need better articulate the complexity of the current IT-based OT.

To make or fake sense of information technology?: strategic ambiguity as a source of radical changeManuskript (preprint) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

While Information Technology (IT) resources signal different meanings to different actors, strategy scholarship advocates the establishing of tight links between the functional role and strategic purpose of IT resources. Particularly, the “interpretative flexibility” of IT resources is depicted as an obstacle for effective strategy implementation that needs to be overcome through planned deployment, training, and control. We challenge this conventional assumption. Through applying a practice lens in a qualitative multi-site case study, we identify four types of IT resource configurations, theorizing IT resource ambiguity as a source for radical change. Ultimately, we observe how, when, and why ambiguous uses of IT can form critical elements of new IT strategy practices, and suggest several implications of the observed IT resource ambiguity for strategy and management research.

    Abstract [en]

Many studies looked at mobile information needs of users and how to support those needs in the mobile platform and the challenges it holds. In this study I tried to take a different approach in arguing that the uses of the services available on the stationary set up are used with different motivations and goals on the various mobile platform context and therefore designing the mobile versions of those require careful considerations of that. I present the results of a study conducted to investigate how the use of Facebook mobile differ over the stationary and mobile platform and use that as an example to elaborate on the design considerations of similar services.

ME|EMO: Application concept for sharing emotions through non-verbal communication2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

ME|EMO provides a method to help users to express, visualize and share emotions through digital nonverbal communication. This application will enable the users to map their emotions to colors and encourage users to paint their feelings. A canvas with uncolored images and a color palette with color coded emotions creates an environment for expressing and visualizing the feelings. The result is an image file in the form of a simple piece of modern art with the possibility of sharing it through social networks, or to record the emotions and save precious moments of life. Technology development, new ways of communication, digital tools, apps, social media, have helped people to have a better life by giving people the opportunity to communicate easier with loved ones and friends. ME|EMO tries to enhance the way of modern communication (digital text-based) such as social networks or modern healthcare systems, by supporting the emotional side of communications.

Multi-Person Infrared Pupil Tracking for 3D TV without Glasses2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The success of recent 3-D stereoscopic movies such as Avatar has created a lot of attention for 3-D in the home. Almost all major consumer electronics (CE) manufacturers have launched their 3-D stereoscopic displays in the market. A problem with those solutions is that viewers have to wear glasses. Glasses-free autostereoscopic 3-D displays typically use lenticular lenses or barriers to create multiple views. However these displays suffer from a number of issues: inverted views at viewing cone transitions, cross-talk between views, and need for multi-view content.  As Philips Electronics research group, we believe that some of these issues can be reduced by using pupil tracking. In the research process, we began with an extensive literature study on people detection and tracking techniques that helped us to understand the benefits and the shortcomings of different applications. Addition to literature studies, we greatly benefited from constant experimentation with prototypes and the hands-on experience with variety of digital and optical components under different conditions. As a result, we designed a multi-person infrared pupil tracker and multi-view renderer for 3D display to adapt the view rendering in real-time according to viewer’s position. Together with the integration of these two applications, the integrated 3D TV successfully adapts the center view according to position of the viewer and able to provide a smooth transition while the viewer actively changes her position from a notable distance under ambient illumination. However, even though the pupil tracker is implemented for multiple people, because of the time limitation and the complexity of the problem regarding multi-view renderer, the integrated system functions only for one person.   Exploring the employed technique, in-depth description and detailed illustration of designed applications and the conclusions drawn from the implemented system; we believe that this paper forms a substantial guidance and show-how source for further research in the field of 3D display and people tracking methods.

Configuring value creation processes for global service: evidence from an IT firm2013Ingår i: Proceedings of the Nineteenth Americas Conference on Information Systems, 2013Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

To survive and prosper in a networked economy, organizations must learn how to act as part of a wider value network. Key firm capabilities are thus the positioning in a value network and the providing of services that are attractive for the market. In this article I report from a longitudinal study targeting a team that has been forced to handle a re-positioning within its value network. The team started out developing a software, tailor-made for each customer, but development have taken them to various positions and delivery context creating challenges for the team to tackle. As contributions, this research has the goal of providing new theoretical insights about the challenges involved in managing information infrastructure services from various positions in a value chain, how information gaps in value chains emerge as a result of an increased distance between service provider and customer, and how such gaps can be solved.

Living on the edge: balancing rigor and relevance within an action research context2010Ingår i: Industrial informatics design use and innovation / [ed] Holmström, Jonny, Wiberg, Mikael & Lund, Andreas, Hershey: IGI Global , 2010, s. 102-121Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes the efforts in ensuring research relevance by means of an industrial PhD project. The project is aiming at strengthening the relevance of research and development by educating scientists with an insight into the practical aspects of research and development and by developing networks in which knowledge can be effectively disseminated between industry and university. The project is taking its stand with an empirical and industrial centre with a technical solution called Dynamo, which is delivered by the company Logica. Dynamo, an intelligent portal that seamlessly connects systems, user information, roles and rule sets, and its context will provide a rich and useful empirical source from which to launch the action research process. The project contains two distinct stakeholders – industry and academy – jointly guiding the project and making sure that both worlds get a result that is in line with and contributes to their business. To this end two key stakeholders that have taken on the role as gatekeepers of rigor and relevance respectively. Taking position in the middle of the action is the PhD student who, by living the life of both researcher and consultant, will take on the role of balancing rigor and relevance. The chosen research approach together with the complex implementation context together with makes it crucial to take on an open minded selection.

From Technological Transitions to Service Transitions: A Study of Attenuation Effects in IT Service Provisioning2015Ingår i: Journal of Information Technology Services, ISSN 1975-4256, Vol. 14, nr 2, s. 337-354Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In a day and age when contemporary businesses are transformed, driven by a service-dominance logic and dependent upon IT, we need to understand how firms cope with technological adaptations and how such technological adaptations can lead to service adaptations. Drawing on a framework on technological transitions and an interpretive longitudinal case study of the services provided by a team within a large public IT firm, this article addresses the following questions:How do service transitions come about? Can we distinguish particular patterns in service transition processes? This research unveils how technological and social dimensions mutually constitute each other within development and implementation of service provisioning. The findings show how:(a) IT plays a fundamental role in service provisioning; (b) technological transitions are the necessary but insufficient preconditions for service transitions; and (c) there are attenuation effects when it comes to the move from technology transition to service transition.

The role of context in managing information infrastructure services2010Ingår i: ICIS 2010 Proceedings, AIS Electronic Library (AISeL) , 2010Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Contemporary organizations are increasingly dependent on information infrastructures to deliver their services. However, information infrastructures are highly complex and dynamic, which lead to considerable management challenges. This research aims to contribute to our understanding of these challenges through an in-depth investigation of a team responsible for information infrastructure services at a large business and technology service company. The complexity and dynamics faced by the team emphasizes the important role of context in managing its information infrastructure services and underlying technology platform. To investigate the team’s practice we therefore adopt contextualist inquiry in combination with a pluralist approach based on four complementary theoretical lenses; technological frames of references, risk management, control versus drift, and dynamic capabilities. As contributions, this research has the dual goal to improve the teams’ practices while at the same time providing new theoretical insights about the role of context in management of information infrastructure services.

The character of a VR -visualization2003Ingår i: Proceedings of the 26th International Systems Research in Scandinavia (IRIS)Conference, 2003Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

When we humans are dealing with complex things in our daily lives, for example an artifact, we tend to ascribe different characters to it. This is our way of getting a quick overview of the artifact and makes it understandable to us. The ascribing of character is not based on thorough examination of the object at hand though, but rather on a certain thing, i.e. a characteristic that catches our attention. This characteristic gives us a certain feeling about the artifact and makes it possible for us to make a judgment about it, even if it is a snap one. With this as a starting point we try to identify the different characteristics, which constitute the overall character, i.e. realism. In many visualisations with this objective, realism is juxtaposed with copying static structures, i.e. buildings and streets. This is also a strong contributor to the realism character in the Botnia-track visualisation. In our opinion this is not enough to get a realistic character. We have identified a few other prominent characteristics that also are important contributors to the realism character, for example landmarks, sound, moving objects and narrator voice. Our main conclusion is that if a realistic character is desirable, more than visualisation of static structures is necessary. We found at least five additional characteristics that influence people’s perception of a virtualisation; landmarks, sound, moving objects and narrator voice. In our opinion, all of these are important for a realistic character to emerge and something that designers have to take in to consideration to reach the intended goal.

    Abstract [en]

People are used to working routines that are taught and transferred from one to another, routines such as how to interact with an information system and how to use it in a specific context. While user experience and usability have been two issues of interest within the field of HCI, there is a lack of research exploring usage and behavior while interacting with complex error-sensitive systems, in so much as an action that couldn’t be undone once performed. This thesis explores the error-sensitive aspects of complexity within interactions of the administering of medical prescription activities at an intensive healthcare unit. The aim is to investigate the interactions of computer-supported cooperative work environments used for information transformation activities for medical prescriptions. The results reveal a number of HCI-related issues in which clinicians socially bypass system interactions by making incomplete data inputs while assuming a given level of understanding of other employees.

Vad innebär övergången till Scrum?: En studie som undersöker hur Scrum påverkar systemutvecklingsarbetet i globala organisationer2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Currently many organizations are transitioning from the traditional approach to the agile approach regarding systems development methods. It is evident that research has mainly focused on smaller organizations transitioning, whilst less focus has been given t0 larger organizations. We find this interesting and the purpose of this study is to gain a deeper and broader knowledge concerning the following research question: How is system development work affected by a change from traditional system development methods to Scrum in large global organizations. We also investigate how Scrum can be adapted to complex projects with an internal client. The study is based on a case study, which takes a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews for information gathering and was conducted on a major Swedish telecom company. The company initiated the transition process approximately two years ago, with the transition still ongoing. The study indicates that the main reason for adopting the agile way of working was to optimize the development process by enhancing the effectiveness. Furthermore additional effects that were gained due to the change, for example a higher grade of team spirit and a more transparent development process. Furthermore we identified where the organization had made changes on the method, Scrum, this due to different reasons such as company size and the complex nature of the projects. Finally, the study showed that even though an organization choose to embrace agile methods, the practical context in which it is introduced can lead to it being adapted to the point where it deviates from its most central theoretical underpinnings.
