    Abstract [en]

    In this paper I present ongoing design research that explores mediating group experiences. The objective of the paper is to introduce subject matter and design research approach, to provide material for an in depth discussion of challenges.

    Several research designs are presented that yield insight in theoretical and conceptual aspects of remote group interactions. Themes emerging from them concern the concept of embodiment, in particular regarding the conceptualization and expression of groups through the mediating system, as well as embodiment of the system for the individual, in the sense of both incorporation and extension of action-perception capacities. To further articulate and express such themes, ongoing and proposed research is presented. Difficulty is brought forward in bringing the various research designs together as one body of work, particularly in relation to theoretical framework, related work and ultimately articulating contributions.

    Abstract [en]

    Design deals with matters of aesthetics. Historically, aesthetics in industrial design refers to the designed artifact: aesthetics of objects. When designed artifacts include digital technologies, aesthetics in design refers to what happens between people and artifacts as well: aesthetics of interaction. Now that these artifacts increasingly mediate our social lives, what aesthetics in design quite obviously also refers to, is what happens between people.

    This dissertation proposes an aesthetic of being together, as a necessary addition to current notions of aesthetics in interaction design practice, when it engages with digital systems that are part of people’s social life. It does not answer the question what Aesthetics is in general, instead it examines the work that particular notions of aesthetics do in interaction design practice.

    The practice based design research assembled in this dissertation starts from current notions of aesthetics in interaction design to explore the social experiences that mediated interactions between groups of people offer. What I found, through designing digital systems, is that current notions of aesthetics in interaction design are not conducive to addressing the kind of social experience people have with such systems. On the contrary, current notions actually inhibit interaction design to approach any experiences that cannot in the first place be conceived of as useful in terms of instrumental task performance. Yet, being social is hardly like performing a task or using other people in that sense.

    An aesthetic of being together is a proposition of a different fundament for interaction design practice. In addition to referring to properties of things and qualities of interacting with things, it refers to the kind of relations that come to expression between people interacting with each other with these things. Consequently, interaction design needs to resolve basic issues in what it considers and brings to expression, i.e. people’s relations with things and people at the same time. This requires (re-) considering what the designed thing is, what interaction is about and what the role of design is in bringing those to expression.

    My work contributes to the field of interaction design research an example of how, through practice, fundamental issues can be addressed. By orienting one set of concepts, ways of working and objectives into a different design situation, tensions built up that exposed foundational issues with that frame of reference, while pointing to the different fundaments needed to enable design practice to engage such situations.

    The results of the practical experimentation led to the articulation of a series of structural mechanisms of mediating systems.  These mechanisms provide material handles for interaction designers on how experiences of being present with others take shape. They configure the relations of artifacts and people in different ways than current notions of aesthetics afford. This theoretical investigation is then synthesised in the form of a new logic of expression for interaction design practice: an aesthetic of being together.

    Abstract [en]

    This project explores the future of podcasting as a digital audio media format for stories. As podcasts continue to grow in popularity the medium becomes more and more influential amongst all age groups. Unfortunately, existing solutions do not give enough attention to all possible aspects of the medium. Podcasts carry an untapped potential as they are often treated similarly to music files. This project consists of a platform, Cast3, with two separate products directed to listeners and creators of audio stories. The platform gives users a possibility to connect with similar minded people around specific topics through clubs.

    Inspiration and Method

    To understand the needs of listeners and creators of the stories, I immersed myself with the storytelling world and conducted a thorough research with conversations with both users groups, opportunities evaluations and concepts testing. The insights gathered during the research brought the conclusion that both listeners and creators tend to want more involvement and have stronger community gathered around audio stories. That is why the project’s goal is to form an audio story community for listeners and creators, where they connect through similar interests and share inspiring content.

    Result

    The final outcome of the project consists of a platform Cast3 that has 2 separate products directed to listeners and creators of audio stories. The platform gives users a possibility to connect with similar minded people around specific topics through clubs. The clubs are the spaces where listeners can exchange information, discover new content through a word of mouth and bond with the creators through live shows. The creators’ needs are supported through specialised tools that help to record stories and help to learn more about the listeners. The users of the platform can interact with audio stories through a redefined media format called freecasting. The new format improves a listening experience and respond to presently existing needs of listeners as well as creators.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis revolves  around the implementation and design of a social discovery web service called Go&Grow whose beta version was launched in september 2012. The aim of this study was to conduct a theoretical analysis of service design, putting it in comparison to other design disciplines, and finding key points in designing this web service. Another purpose was to start the implementation of the service using the web framework Django and further to evaluate different web techniques used to build such a system. Methods applied in this study were taken from literature describing the service design process.Based on these ndings, the identication of persons that should be involved in the design process was found. Also, prototypes of the design proposals were created to test user interaction and experience. The system has been implemented by using web techniques including Python and the Django framework, HTML, CSS, AJAX and JavaScript. Bothback-end as well as front-end development has been perfomed, though this thesis mainlyfocuses on the front-end aspects of implementation.The results of the study were a new design proposal of the web site as well as a launchedbeta version of the Go&Grow service.

    I det här arbetet studeras och utvärderas olika metoder för att energieffektivisera ett K-märkt hyreshus i Skellefteå som jag har valt att jobba med. Mitt arbete har tagits fram genom olika beräkningsmetoder för energieffektivisering. Dessa förslag lämnas till hyresvärden för beaktning. Energibesparingarna kommer på sikt att leda till ökad lönsamhet för fastigheten. Vid studiens beräkningar och diagram konstaterades att fönster, självdragsventilationen samt ett dåligt isolerat tak var de största energibovarna. En totalrenovering var inte aktuell eftersom det är privata ägare av fastigheten som inte har ekonomiska resurser till detta. Tilläggsisolering i takbjälklaget och insättning av energiglas gör dock att man sänker kostnaderna rejält i förhållande till investeringskostnaden. En återbetalningstid på ca 15år har uppskattats vilket i sammanhangen känns rimligt. Energiförbrukningen har beräknats sjunka från 278 till 223 MWh per år. Transmissionsförlusterna minskade från 1069 till 766 W/K, alltså hela 28% efter åtgärderna. Fönster och dörrar har förbättrats genom energiglas och nya tätningslister med 54%. Efter utförande av energieffektiviserande åtgärder för det här huset har beräkningar visat att de kommer att sänka energiförbrukningen med 21 % vilket får anses bra med tanke på den förhållandevis låga investeringen vad gäller både tid och pengar.

    A New Hands-free Face to Face Video Communication Method: Profile based frontal face video reconstruction2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave

    This thesis proposes a method to reconstruct a frontal facial video basedon encoding done with the facial profile of another video sequence.The reconstructed facial video will have the similar facial expressionchanges as the changes in the profile video. First, the profiles for boththe reference video and for the test video are captured by edge detection.Then, asymmetrical principal component analysis is used to model thecorrespondence between the profile and the frontal face. This allows en-coding from a profile and decoding of the frontal face of another video.Another solution is to use dynamic time warping to match the profilesand select the best matching corresponding frontal face frame for re-construction. With this method, we can reconstructed the test frontalvideo to make it have the similar changing in facial expressions as thereference video. To improve the quality of the result video, Local Lin-ear Embedding is used to give the result video a smoother transitionbetween frames.

    Företaget Tempus har sedan tidigare ett system med samma namn vars tjänster underlättar närvaroregistrering av barn inom förskola och skolbarnomsorg och som kostnaden vårdnadshavare betalar for omsorgen kan baseras på. Syftet med denna studie var att undersoka företagets hypotes, att det hos förskolor fanns ett behov av en teknisk lösning som underlattar tidsplanering av personal, vilket kunde underlätta arbetet med att schemalagga, fördela och åskådliggöra personalensarbetstider anpassat mot verksamhetens krav. Vidare om det fanns ett behov av en sådan tjanst, utreda förskolornas behov och hur en teknisk lösningkan anpassas mot detta. For att verifiera hypotesen och ge svar på följdfrågorna har en undersökande fallstudie utforts pa fem förskolor genom att tillämpa metoder såsom fall- och fältstudier, intervjuer, kravinsamling och funktionsanalys.

    Abstract [en]

    Gait analysis can be described as a study of human walking patterns. This is very useful in health care, since gait analysis can reveal important information about a patient, and be an aid in diagnosis and rehabilitation. Today gait analysis is done either by qualitative visual observation of the patient, or in resource demanding and advanced laboratory settings. Many studies have been done in the search for new technical solutions that enables quantitative gait analysis outside of the laboratory.

    The goal of this thesis was to evaluate the usability of a new gait analysis system and to find out how the user interface could be better adapted to the end user’s needs and goals. This was done by defining and using suitable methods for learning about the users, evaluating the system and by defining usability in a clinical setting. A redesigned prototype was then developed and tested.

    It was found that the original user interface had many usability issues and was in need of better adaption to the intended user group. Through user research personas and key user needs could be determined that became the basis for the design work, along with guidelines from previous studies within the field. The redesigned prototype was tested on potential end users.

    It was in this study determined that semi-structured interviews are suitable for learning about the users. Usability evaluation should preferably be done using a combination of evaluation that involves real end users and evaluation by usability experts. Guidelines for usability in clinical systems could also be defined. Considering the redesigned prototype, the users saw a great potential, and could see themselves using it in the future. The testing determined that the redesigned prototype managed to solve many of the usability issues found in the original design.

    Det FInns många typer av identikationsmedel och i denna rapport redovisas uppbyggnaden av en prototyp som använder ansiktsigenkänning för identifiering vid en dörr. Prototypen är ett resultat av ett examensarbete på företaqet Wawo Technology AB och författarens roll i projektet var som projektledare. Projektledarens fokus låg på kommunikation med teammedlemmarna, på att driva projektet framåt samt på att användartesta systemets alla delar. Resultatet av projektet blev en prototyp som i dagsläget är monterad på ett kontor och används av personalen. Registreringen till systemet sköts viaen hemsida av en administratör. Fotograferingen till registreringen genomförs med protoypen och det är möjligt att lagra era bilder per person vilket medföratt användarna kan lagra bilder på olika utseenden, exempelvis med och utan glasögon. Interaktionen med systemet har hållits enkelt och för att bli insläppt behövver användaren ställa sig framför prototypen och titta mot skärmen. Är användaren registrerad och blir igenkänd kommer en grön välkomstskärm att visas och dörren, som prototypen är kopplad till, låses upp. Fördjupningsavsnittet om ansiktsdetektering resulterade i ett förslag till Wawo Technology AB om en kombination av olika metoder för detektering, färginformation och en utseendebaserad metod. Förslaget är teoretiskt användbart både i prototypen och i en övervakningssituation med Wawos algoritm men skulle behöva testas i ett skarpt läge.

    Abstract [en]

    Interaction with digital products and interfaces concern more and more of human decision-making and the problems regarding environmental, financial and social sustainability are consequences much due to our behavior. The issues and goals of sustainable development therefore implies how we have to think differently about digital design. In this paper, we examine the adequacy of influencing sustainable behavior with a data-driven design approach, applying a conversational user interface. A case study regarding the United Nation’s goals of technological development and economic distribution was conducted, to see if a hypothetical business with a proof-of-concept digital product could be effective in influencing where companies base their operations. The test results showed a lack of usability and influence, but still suggested a potential with language-based interfaces. Even though the results could not prove anything, we argue that leveraging data analysis to design for sustainable behavior could be a very valuable strategy. A data-driven approach could enable ambitions of profit and user experience to coincide with those of sustainability, within a business organization.

    Abstract [en]

    File sharing is a significant activity of enterprise computer use. In organizations, files are usually shared using e-mail attachments. However, large media files cannot be shared using e-mail, due to file size limitations. Instead, different external file sharing systems are used to share large files. The use and size of media files will continue to increase, which requires file sharing mechanisms that can handle this. For organizations today, it is difficult to find a file sharing application that fulfills all requirements and needs of the users. Especially for large media rich organizations, where the file sharing scenarios are many and files can be shared internally and externally with dissimilar feature and security requirements. An example of such an organization is Baggie, a fashion company where large media files are shared daily, using various file sharing systems. The inconsistency of what system to use, leads to confusion and frustration among its users. Additionally, their current file sharing systems do not fulfill all of Baggie’s users’ requirements and no system is integrated with their media asset management system.

    This master thesis aims to solve the challenges of file sharing within large organizations, particularly media rich organizations such as Baggie by centralize file sharing to one application. By performing a theoretical study and user studies, thirteen design guidelines for file sharing applications have been established. The guidelines focuses on usability, security and users’ requirements regarding media file sharing. Based on the studies, a prototype have been designed for a new file sharing application: BShare. BShare aims to replace Baggie’s current file sharing systems and the application fulfills all requirements of Baggie users. The BShare prototype can be seen as a reference design for file sharing applications.

    Clinical evaluation of atlas-based segmentation for radiotherapy of head and neck tumours2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Background

    Semi-automated segmentation using deformable registration of atlases consisting of pre-segmented patient images can facilitate the tedious task of delineating structures and organs in patients subjected to radiotherapy planning. However, a generic atlas based on a single patient may not function well enough due to the anatomical variation between patients. Fusion of segmentation proposals from multiple atlases has the potential to provide a better segmentation due to a more complete representation of the anatomical variation.

    Purpose

    The main goal of the study was to investigate potential operator timesaving from editing of atlas-based segmentation compared to manual segmentation for head & neck cancer.

    Materials and Methods

    A commercial atlas-based segmentation software (VelocityAI from Nucletron AB) was used together with several expert generated and protocol-based atlases of delineated CT images to create multiple atlas segmentations through deformable registration. The atlas that was considered most universal was selected to construct single atlas segmentation proposals. For fusion of the multiple atlas segmentations an in-house developed algorithm, including information of local registration success was used in a MATLAB-environment1. The algorithm uses weighted distance map calculations where weights represent probabilities of improving the segmentation results. Based on previous results1 the probabilities were estimated using the cross correlation image similarity measure evaluated over a region within a certain distance from the segmentation. Ten patients were incorporated in the study. Each patient was delineated three times, (a) manually by the radiation oncologist, (b) with a single atlas segmentation and (c) with a fusion of multiple atlas segmentations. For the methods (b) and (c) the radiation oncologist corrected the proposed segmentations blindly without using the result from method (a) as reference. For case (c) a total number of 11 atlas segmentations were used. The time spent for segmenting or editing the segmentation proposals by the radiation oncologist was recorded separately for each method and each individual ROI. In addition a grading was used to score how helpful the candidate segmentation proposals were for the structure delineations. The Dice Similarity Coefficient, the Hausdorff distance and the volume were used to evaluate the similarity between the delineated structures.

    Results

    The results show a time reduction in the order of 40% when the radiation oncologist only has to correct the multiple atlas-based segmentation proposal compared to manual segmentation. When using single atlas the corresponding figure is 21%.

    Conclusions

    Using atlas-based segmentation can reduce the time needed for delineation in the head and neck area of patients admitted for radiotherapy.

    Abstract [en]

    Time keeps on changing our perception of what is possible in our personal life and around us. Over time, jobs such as elevator operator was essential to make the elevator keep its speed, stop parallel to the floor and keep passengers safe in case of emergency. Nowadays elevator passengers just have to enter their destination and wait to be transported there. An operator would be superfluous for this, today, simple procedure.

    This paper aims to create a set of interaction strategies to provide an efficient and pleasurable journey for the passenger traveling with an autonomous bus, as well as evaluate concepts where these strategies have been applied. The strategies and concepts will be developed from an extensive user- and literature research where the situation of today will be analysed and looked upon with the eyes of tomorrow, to find challenges and needs.

    Findings shows that passengers have to trust the vehicle and service. At the same time vehicle and service providers have to provide a reliable and consistent service. Four design directions were created to establish this trust between the user and vehicle and service.

    To enable control and give passengers an efficient journey, passengers have to be provided with adequate and reliable information. The information regarding the bus’s behaviour should be communicated in a transparent way so the bus’s intentions and actions are understandable from a passenger point of view. Also, passengers have to be enabled to stay safe when using the bus, during commuting and emergency, through giving them cues in how an emergency should be handled.

    Abstract [en]

    Everyday we come up with new solutions for our existing problems. But the solutions of today are tomorrow’s problem. The products we create as designers are often bringing more complexity in our society than it is initially intended for.

    This thesis aims to give a new perspective on the design practice community. Instead of starting with a problem-solving scope, this thesis intent is to find what is truly meaningful for human life, meaning finding, and to propose how we can envision new ways of meaning making within interaction design. The two processes together of meaning finding and meaning making is how we can aim for concrete results that are relevant for our society.

    To better understand what truly matters for human life, I collected 14 stories through ethnographic research. These ethnographic stories reveal the nature of human characteristics when people face and overcome big challenges in life. Some of these ethnographic stories highlights the life of a WWII survivor, war refugee, leukaemia child-patient and a widow. Parallel, to the ethnographic work, I explored how I can evoke a deeper connection between people, by making them listen to each-other’s heartbeat. 

    Inevitably, by exploring the fundamental elements of human life and observing the emotions and behaviour of my interviewees and participants, the thesis find itself often on the playground between philosophy and human life. But by taking a strong interaction design perspective, these insights were manifested in the human design manifesto booklet. This booklet proposes six expressions for designers, with the intention to embrace the fundamental elements of human life when we design: 

    1. Design attitudes, not solutions. 2. Design the medicine of the mind. 3. Design for relationships. 4. Design for our direct senses. 5. Design for the deep human connection. 6. Design the act of kindness 

    Later on, for the meaning making part: one statement from the Human Design Manifesto was selected to explore in depth: Design the act of kindness. For this expression project Hidden Figures was created. Hidden Figures is a design proposal which demonstrates that a design creation can be driven by the fundamental elements of human life. In this case proposing the act of kindness as a vision on how our society could be. 

    In overall, this master’s thesis demonstrates how our design proposals can embody and resonate well between the three levels of design philosophy, a designer’s vision and interaction design practice: How we, as designers, can use meaning-making and meaning-finding to create more relevant impact for our society. Last, I hope this work encourages other designers to think deeply about their own creations and its impact. And help designers reflect on why they create and how they could also alternatively practice design.

    There is a increasing interest in creating wearable smartphone interaction technologies. A novel smartphone wearable hybrid interaction framework based on mixed low-cost hardware and software is proposed in this work. The software application renders touch-less application graphics and status information using smart phone's screen. Augmented reality image rendering technology is employed for a convenient hand/foot and phone interaction. The users interact with the application using hand/foot gesture motion behind the camera, which trigger the interaction event and generate activity sequences for interactive buffers. The touch-less algorithm provides a core support for hand/foot-gesture interaction by accurately detecting and tracking the hand/foot gesture. Four proof-of-concept application prototypes are developed based on the wearable hybrid framework. The user study evaluation demonstrates the social acceptability of the designed hand/foot gestures and the usability of the applications on proposed wearable hybrid framework with touch-less interaction approach.

    Svenska lärosäten har utvecklat egna kvalitetssystem som ska granskas och godkännas av universitetskans-lersämbetet (UKÄ). Typiskt bygger lärosätenas kvalitetssäkrings-system på cykliska mäta-värdera-åtgärda aktiviteter. I flera av dessa system förekommer extern kollegial granskning som en viktig komponent. Syftet med detta arbete är att belysa två olika system för extern kollegial granskning från olika perspektiv. Den externa granskningen av högskoleingenjörsprogrammen i maskinteknik vid Uppsala universitet och Umeå universitet är utgångspunkten och de perspektiv som belyses är de från

    • Programansvariga,

    • Utbildningsledare på fakultetsnivå, samt

    • Extern granskare

    I arbetet teoretiseras inte upplägg och genomförande av kvalitetsarbetet eller den kollegiala granskningen, utan målet är att genom vittnesbörd sprida praktisk kunskap och erfarenheter om två olika system för extern kollegial granskning.

    Initialt beskrivs de två olika systemen, hur olika aktiviteter och processer är tänkt att tillsammans bidra till att säkerställa att utbildningar håller en hög kvalitet. Särskilt fokus läggs på att beskriva upplägget på den externa kollegiala granskningen och hur den information som granskningen ger vid handen återkopplas till program och andra intressenter. Fakultetens utbildningsledare ger sin syn på genomförandet av den kollegiala granskningen ur ett övergripande fakultetsperspektiv samt beskriver de fakultetsövergripande slutsatser som dragits utifrån de externa granskningarna. Programansvariga beskriver verksamhetsnära erfarenheter av de kollegiala granskningarna. Särskilt intressant är beskrivningen av hur utfallet av den kollegiala granskningen bidragit till att definiera utvecklingsprojekt på programnivå. Resultatet kopplas till resursåtgång.

    Det tredje perspektivet är det av den externe granskaren. I fallet med högskoleingenjörsprogrammet i maskinteknik vid Uppsala respektive Umeå universitet var det samma granskare vilket ger en unik möjlighet att få en extern parts synpunkter på underlag i förhållande till efterfrågad granskning.Slutligen sammanfattas styrkor och svagheter i de båda ansatserna till extern kollegial granskning.

    The goal of this master thesis was to evaluate the field of Smart home applications run on mobile platforms such as smart phones. This was at the time a relatively new field that has attracted the attention of Smart phone giants like Apple and Google. This raised the question whether or not the users willingness to embrace the technology.

    To evaluate the field, a literature study was conducted covering the Smart home technology, and Apple’s and Google’s Smart home solutions. The rendered in a prototype for a Smart home communication application which was run on the Android platform. The prototype was then used in user tests focusing on the usability of the application and the field of Smart home smart phone applications.

    Even though the usability of the application was regarded fairly low, positive results were obtained regarding the evaluation of the field it self. This points to promising progress of Smart home applications run on smart phones.

    Increasing Donor Retention on Non-profit Crowdfunding Websites: Recommendations and Considerations2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    With the emergence of the concept of crowdfunding, a new alternative has arisen for non-profit organizations to procure funding for their cause. But several of the issues plaguing non-profits still remain. Attracting people to give in the first place is one major challenge, but retaining the relationship and keeping the donors giving is an even bigger one. This thesis delves into the issue of getting donors to sustain their giving, more commonly known as donor retention. More specifically, this thesis aims to identify what factors are important when aiming to improve donor retention in both charity and crowdfunding contexts. Additionally, the thesis explores what is important in the general structure and content of a non-profit crowdfunding platform, and what possible measures can be taken in order to improve donor retention through the platform.

    This was achieved by conducting a literature study in the field of donor retention in both a charity as well as crowdfunding context to find important factors as well as measures to be considered. In parallel, 15 interviews were conducted to gather insights on the attitudes, donation habits and motivations of people who had previous experience of giving to charity. In sequence with the interviews, 15 user tests on the crowdfunding platform of the non-profit organization Help to Help were performed. The user tests aimed to evaluate and collect donors' opinions and conceptions of the contents and layout of an existing non-profit crowdfunding platform. From the literature study several factors found to improve donor retention were identified. These were: satisfaction, trust, commitment and involvement. The literature study, interviews and user tests resulted in finding a large number of possible actions to take when constructing a non-profit crowdfunding platform. The measures were summarized and condensed into a collection of recommendations and considerations to take when designing such a platform to increase donor retention. The thesis also identified that crowdfunding components can make a charity website appear more transparent and innovative. Additionally, the thesis found that many donors continue to donate based on their initial conviction. Where the ability to provide proof of where the donations end up and ability to appear transparent were the most cited reasons for deciding to support an organization.

    Abstract [en]

    Music making and technological development has always been connected. The digital revolution has made advanced music production, writing and distribution tools universally accessible. New intelligent tools built on machine learning are entering the market potentially changing how we create music and interact with creative content. 

    The aim of this thesis project has been to find alternatives to existing interaction models manifested in modern DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations). Ideas developed through rough sketches and simple prototypes—the outcome consists of three concept videos proposing changes to three moments in the workflow of songwriters and producers.

    This thesis started with an idea of exploring the borderland between computer generated music and human creativity. Through desk research and interviews I learned that computational creativity exist and that there is a lot of different ways of defining creativity and art. Creating creative computers should not aim to replace humans creative abilities—it is rather about automating and creating tools that enhance our creative abilities. 

    To understand how songwriters and producers work the subject were investigated through semi-structured contextual interviews. The different ways of working and using tools were mapped out and potential opportunity areas were identified. This thesis have been a project that through sketching, mock-ups and simple prototypes questions how we use digital tools in music production. These concepts and sketches were continuously brought back to experts for feedback.

    The outcome consists of three concepts. They are presented through three short videos. These videos are now shared with a bigger audience and will act as an conversation starter for people interested in tools for digital music production. 

    1. Automating parts of the songwriting process and create a collaborative workflow between a you and a computer, through a conversational user interface. 

    2. A pressure sensitive touch surface that let you manipulate sound. It is an adaptive system that automatically detects active controls in your DAW—it maps these active controls from your computer screen down to a touch pad. 

    3. The third concept changes the way you organise and look for sound files. It is a automatised process where a software helps you compare different sounds to each other. It takes away most labels and focuses on mapping sound according to its auditory profile.

    I denna rapport görs en kartläggning på uppdrag av Sidas kommunikationsavdelning hur organisationen arbetar i dagsläget med rörlig media. Utifrån detta tas förslag fram på förbättringsområden och strategier för Sidas fortsatta arbete med rörliga medier. Rapporten är tänkt att bidra till underlag för framtida planering och beslutsfattande kring rörliga medier.

    Bakgrunden till studien är att kommunikationsavdelningen på Sida har märkt en ökad efterfrågan på rörlig media som kommunikationsmetod. I dagsläget är det främst tre typer av rörlig media som tagit fram hittills; filmning och direktsändning av seminarier, videointervjuer med experter och kända personer och en videoserie med namnet ”Människan i centrum”. Dessa publiceras på hemsidan, YouTube och Bambuser. För videolagring av videor av bättre kvalité används videotjänsten Qbrick.

    Som undersökningsmetod ingår kvalitativa intervjuer med tolv personer på Sida. Dessutom görs fördjupande kartläggning av följande områden:

    • Tekniska förutsättningar i IT-miljön på Sida och då främst huvudkontoret.• Anlitande av konsulttjänster för avancerade produktioner• Teknisk utrustning och exempel på produktion av rörlig media.

    En slutsats är att det finns en del att göra för att rörlig media ska bli en naturlig del av verksamheten. Förslag på åtgärder är bland annat att fundera över strukturen för arbetet rörlig media som till exempel vem eller vilka i organisationen ska kunna publicera material i Sidas namn. Ett annat förslag är att inkludera IT-enheten i arbetet med rörlig media.

    Augmented reality (AR) is a way of overlaying digital information onto a picture or a videofeed and has been used in industrial contexts for more than 20 years. This Master's Thesis examines if AR can be used to help maintenance engineers set up and maintain robot environments by visualizing robot movement and safety zones. The main result of the Master's Thesis is a prototype application for a tablet computer. The user points the tablet towards a robot filming it and the video feed is displayed on the screen. This video feed is augmented with a virtual zone displayed around the robot, illustratingthe area where the robot is allowed to move. The application fetches the coordinatesfor the zone from the safety system SafeMove { a system designed by ABB to increase safetyand allow closer human-robot collaboration.The visualization of a SafeMove conguration is currently limited to an image of atwo-dimensional coordinate system showing the zone as a set of dierent coordinates. Thismakes it dicult grasping the full layout of the three-dimensional zone. By using theapplication the user gets a better view of the layout, allowing the user to look at the robot from different sides and see the safety zone projected around the robot. User tests show that people working with SafeMove could benefit from using the application to verify the conguration of SafeMove systems and the conclusion is that AR, if used right, greatly can improve robot interaction and maintenance.

    Detta examensarbete utfördes för Tempus Information Systems AB i Umeå. Tempus har skapat ett system för förskolor och fritidsavdelningar som ger föräldrar möjlighet att lägga scheman och rapportera frånvaro för sina barn digitalt, utan papper, med hjälp av webb-gränssnitt och mobila applikationer. Anställda och administratörer i skolverksamheten kan sedan se scheman och statistik för att kunna planera och följa upp sin verksamhet. Systemet ger även möjligt till registrering av faktisk närvaro vid en förskola. Detta görs med hjälp av pekskärmar och mobila applikationer där anställda kan markera ankomster och avgångar.Rapporten hade tre huvudsakliga mål.Först genomfördes en förundersökning som berörde alla olika delar av systemet. Faktiska användare intervjuades för att se vilka delar av Tempus som fungerar bra, och vilka delar som behöver förbättras. Dessa intervjuer innefattade vårdnadshavare, förskolepersonal, fritidsledare och kommunadministratörer. Sedan skulle en prioriterad lista tas fram med de delar av Tempus som behövde göras bättre och i vilken ordning de skulle behöva skapas.Slutligen skulle en eller flera punkter av denna lista implementeras. Genomförandet skulle resultera i en färdig, eller nästan färdig, applikation eller funktion.Undersökningar genomfördes över hela Sverige med faktiska användare av systemet och resulterade i en lista på vad som kunde göras bättre. Från denna lista valdes att den webbaserade applikationen för personal skulle uppdateras med mer touchanpassade komponenter, ny funktionalitet och möjlighet för nedladdning till Android och iOS.En enkel mockup av ett möjligt nytt gränssnitt skapades som sedan ledde fram till ett designförslag med nytt utseende och ny funktionalitet samt ännu bättre stöd för mobila enheter, jämfört med det nuvarande GWT-projektet. Det bestämdes även att den webbaserade applikationen skulle skapas som native applikationer, från GWT koden, med hjälp av Phonegap.Arbetet resulterade i en uppgraderad webbaserad applikation med bättre responsivitet och ny funktionalitet.

    The information exchange between parents and personnel at preschools is held informally and mainly when the child is departed from the preschool. Interviews with parents and personnel at preschools were made to find out what this exchange consists of, what factors affect it, and if there are parts that may be improved by making them digital. Through these interviews, the information need was extracted and analyzed, and factors affecting the information exchange were identified. Parts of these findings where compiled into asoftware idea as an extension to the software for preschools provided by Tempus Information Systems ab, where this master’s thesis was conducted.Requirements for the software were gathered and prioritized. Prototypes were made,tested, and evaluated leading to the development of a web application. The application supports input of chosen parts of the information need in order to make it accessible forparents. It is intended to be used by the personnel and to run on a tablet mounted on thewall, helping their everyday tasks, as well as being a service to parents of smaller children. This information could then be retrieved by the parents when the child is departed from theTempus Touch software at the preschool, thus freeing the information exchange to qualitative matters about the child’s well-being. It could also be accessible through the Tempus web or mobile application while at home.

    Abstract [en]

    The paper describes an interactive installation exploring perspectives on women’s rights, triggering visitors’ personal reflections through an immersive experience. Starting from the life histories of the women depicted in three paintings from fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth century, we explored three themes: emancipation, self-determination and violence. In the installation, representations of these three paintings were fragmented into panels, floating in the space suspended from a self-standing structure. On these elements, both the original painting and a writhing of visual material were dynamically displayed using a projector. The presence and movement of visitors in the room was tracked by means of a Kinect™ camera and influenced both the position and movements of the panels. A software crawler monitored discussions and debates on social networks. The intensity of these discussions was reflected in the movements of the panels and the content of the projections. The purpose of this interactive installation is to engage visitors in composing a harmonious picture of the complex domain of women’s rights. The experiential form confronts visitors with the opinions of other people debating the theme worldwide. The installation was the outcome of a craft-inspired learning module, grounded on constructivism and reflective practice.

    This study uses the mindset of Bryan Eisenbergs four behavior types (Competitive, Spontaneous, Humanistic, and Methodical), to in- crease the conversion rate and the user experience while shopping online. Traditional retailers, i.e physical stores, are not a priority anymore and a challenge for an e-commerce site is to maintain a relationship to the customer online. The mindset of the four be- havior types is aimed to be used to target the universe of buyers. This mindset and theory will be applied to a CRO-design process, where the focus is to increase the conversion rate optimization of a website. An extensive literature study, an analysis phase, user tests and a questionnaire were used to decide whether this concept is worth using as a part of the process or not. The results indicate that the concept of the four behavior types can be used to target the audience. The thesis states that the concept could be used as a general foundation to further develop this mindset.

    Denna rapport bygger på examensarbetet för Högskoleexamen i Medieteknik vid Umeå Universitet. Examensarbetet har utförts med Heja! Event- och Sponsringsbyrå på uppdrag av Olofsfors AB.

    Rapporten behandlar hur ett projektarbete genomförs, både teoretiskt så som praktiskt i form av svensk och engelsk litteratur och ett genomfört projekt för Heja!s kund, Olofsfors AB. Syftet med rapporten är att visa på hur ett projekts genomförande skiljer sig från de teorier som finns att hämta gentemot verkligheten.

    Då det inte finns någon möjlighet till fördjupad information om det genomförda projektet utifrån de genomförda delarna har en teoretisk referensram tagits fram. Den teoretiska referensramen behandlar en generell projektmodells upplägg och ett projekts organisationsstruktur. Den generella projektmodellen har beskrivits steg för steg samtidigt som specificering av rollernas ansvar i organisationsstrukturen fastställts.

    Olofsfors AB beskrivs utifrån historia, nutid och framtid. Den genomförande delen beskriver hur projektet har genomförts från början till slut med hjälp av Heja!s projektmodell.

    Med hjälp av den teoretiska referensramen, det genomförda projektet och personliga utlåtanden har en slutsats och diskussion tagits fram som besvarar de frågeställningar som står till grund för rapporten. Slutsatsen beskriver vad en projektmodell innebär och ifall Olofsfors AB har lyckats uppnå syftet och målet med projektet. Förslag till fortsatt arbete och diskussion kring personliga aspekter finns beskrivet.

    Abstract [en]

    Ludwig Wittgenstein, austrian-born philosopher, wrote that “the limits of my language mean the limits of my world. All I know is what I have words for”. We tend to think so highly of our language because we think so highly about ourselves. Yet imagine be- ing able to communicate emotions without words. Words can’t express the visceral nature of our emotions. Words aren’t enough.

    How can we experience our emotional world, and others, in a more visceral, primitive way?

    This project proposes the creation of a new sense, using embodied technology, to allow human beings to have a different experience of each other’s emotions, through the study of the long distance relationship scenario. In this human augmentation scenario, design, and specially speculative design have an inherent power to create discussion, awareness and bring attention to how the new developed technologies could affect our existence.

    This project is meant to ask questions rather than nd a solution. It is meant for ev- eryone who is ready to think about the future of human beings and our evolution as a species.

    This document presents an overview of the ve (5) months project while detailing the extension of the work and exploration of the product proposed for emotional human augmentation.

    Abstract [en]

    This case study illustrates how changes in course structure and study program increase students' personal and interpersonal skills. The didactic methods used are based on CDIO and project management and the purpose of the implemented changes has been to increase the employability of the students, giving them a professional identity and increase their selfconfidence.

    To follow the CDIO approach (CDIO, 2010) by integrating project management as a recurring element throughout the program, give students the opportunity to practice generic skills on several occasions and in different contexts. To provide this, the program was restricted in 2011, one of the changes was to let students take a project management course in the first semester of their education. During this course, the students receive professional knowledge and skills that is meant to be further used in following project-based courses. To ensure progression, two strategic courses: Web and Multimedia Production and News Production for Television were revised in the autumn of 2013.

    The result shows that the well-implemented changes to the program and courses has led to an environment of increased personal and interpersonal skills for the students. Lecturers within the program highlight that students at a higher degree work more independently, execute projects more successfully and deliver better presentations in subsequent project-based subject-related courses. Moreover, it is also shown that the student group has taken more responsibility in projects and for their own role in the learning process. Analyzing the results, it is clear that the students have grown as individuals since they obtained a clearer identity as production manager and feel more confident before the final degree project and future career.

    For several hundreds of years printing has been the only effective channel for spreading mass communication. During the 1900s several new media channels have been invented and, with the addition of the Internet, this has both changed the way media is consumed and has increased the competition between different channels. This qualitative case study of 37 firms reports on how relationships are used in the printing industry to relieve some of the impact of the competitive forces from new, and easily accessible, media as a means for marketing and, furthermore, on the impact on the printing industry as an industry. The results from the case study show that there are both internal and external effects of forming relationships and those vertical, as well as horizontal, relationships are of great importance to create a sustainable competitive situation for the printing industry. Relationships are used to increase both the strategic flexibility of the firm and the flexibility of the print media channel. Furthermore, the study illustrates that the printing industry, and print as a medium of communication, is drifting gradually away from the actual customer due to the new paradigm of value creation.

    This paper reports on a case study showing how the printing industry, by arranging their organizations, cope with the competition from new media and enable a high value proposition to their customers in terms of database driven print. The study is based on interviews with 24 firms in the graphic arts industry and a survey of 136 firms. The results show that even though the use of print in general is declining, print in campaigns is sometimes regarded as exclusive due to general noise in digital channels. The firms in the printing industry have engaged in partial vertical integration to get closer customer contact and, thus, increase the amount of customized print for marketing purposes.

    Just as the media industry, media technology and interaction design are fast moving areas. Even though grounded in theoretical models, the problems that the students face after graduation are constantly changing and contemporary, which makes a CDIO approach to education important. This paper reports a case study concerning a project spanning two consecutive courses with the main objective to renew the digital news platforms of the media group VK Media. The project was carried out in 2013 with students from the five-year Master of Science program in Interaction Technology and Design at Umeå University, Sweden. The results illustrate how project-based learning and real case-based group projects can enhance both students learning and the internal process at the external industry partner. The results clearly show how that not only goals in the CDIO Syllabus 2.0 have been met during the project but also actual value has been created for the industry as the students’ design proposals have been implemented and launched publicly.

    This paper reports on a study regarding how vertical integration is used to increase customer relations in the printing industry and illustrates the competitive consequences with vertical integration towards customers. Results show that since direct customers are perceived as more loyal and profitable than advertising agencies and/or print brokers, integration of content creation is common to increase relations with direct customers. However, as direct customers' part of total production is still very small, integration of content creation gives rise to a potentially competitive situation between printing firms and advertising agencies. Printing firms recognized this problem as they try to avoid this competition. Two different approaches to the problem are illustrated. Printing firms either focus on simple jobs that are not of advertising agencies' interest or they isolate these services in a separate firm, and consequently can compete for direct customers and still be a printing firm to advertising agencies.

    Abstract [en]

    The Student Conference in Human – Information - Thing Interaction Technology is the grand finale of the course Current Topic in Interaction Technology and Design at the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics, Umeå University. The idea and objective of the course is to givethe students a forum where they can actively participate in scientific research and development through developing their own ideas. The course introduces students to independently researching an interesting topic, using a foreign language orally and in writing, writing a scientific article on theirwork and presenting their work at a conference. The conference format was chosen to provide a realistic environment for the presentation of the results. The work has been reviewed both by other participant on the course and members of the department. If the reviews are favourable, the paper is accepted as a full paper at the conference and included in the proceedings. Research that has an interesting topic and potential for future publication is presented as work-in-progress at the conference and the abstract is included in the conference proceedings.

    This year eight papers were accepted at the conference as full papers and are included in this proceedings. Furthermore, one papers was accepted as work-in-progress with included abstract.

    This qualitative study of 35 firms reports on how relationships are used in the printing industry to relive the "threat" from new media as a means for marketing and the printing industry as an industry.     Images are central to firms in their use of social media platforms as part of their marketing strategy. Images are a powerful online marketing tool as they allow for engagement and personalisation of marketing content for individual customers. However, images can be a double edge sword in the web 2.0 world, where consumers are able to post content to branded social media sites. This study evaluates the benefits of integrating image recognition into social media from the users perspective. The pilot study undertaken found the majority of the participants thought the possibilities presented for image recognition technology are useful, however they showed concern in relation to their privacy if this technology were to be in social media networks. The results also showed that prior familiarity with this technology does not have any significant impact in how social media users feel about having this technology in social media.

    The global nature of business has increased the importance ofstudents’ international experience during their studies at the university. Usinginteractive technologies the projects investigated ways to increase students’motivation to take responsibility for the learning process by creating “real”international co-creation experience online. This paper presents learningsfrom two consecutive international collaborative teaching between EdithCowan University, Australia, and Umeå University, Sweden, in 2017 and EdithCowan University and the University of Rijeka, Croatia, in 2018. Feedbackfrom the students showed they enjoyed working across cultures and academicdiscipline on simulated products and marketing campaigns. Issues raisedincluded: the need to explicitly explain how all parts of project is going to workand how the students execute their role. Incorporation of a formalintroduction process for the students in each location so all students have thesame knowledge about each other. Furthermore, the provision of real-timeopportunities to collaborate in lectures and the setting joint deadlines betweenthe units are of importance. Despite some of the shortcomings of the project,it has provided a firm foundation for the refinement of ongoing collaborativeteaching.

    This study evaluates if intentionally added design friction affects users level of satisfaction when using a mobile application. Today most applications are designed to have as little friction as possible. An interesting question is if a more mindful interaction will lead to more satisfied users. In this study two prototypes inspired by the Headspace application where tested. One prototype had added design friction and the other had none. The participants were asked to rate their experience and to choose which prototype they preferred. The result shows that most participants of the test would choose the mobile application with added design friction and that they felt more satisfied when they had a clear understanding of the goal of the task.

    With the digitalization and increasing number of Internet users,more and more personal data breaches occur. Many people are not awareof their personal data rights and have not received any instructions on howto act in situations such as when their personal data is abused. This issomething that illustrates the flaws of the Internet. A technology thatprovides solutions to some of these problems, such as trust andtransparency, is the blockchain technology. Hence, the objective of thispaper is to investigate knowledge about personal data rights and to explorethe design of a prototype of a blockchain application for increased securityand transparency. User tests were conducted, highlighting the greatestneeds for users to feel secure and in control over their personal data. Thisknowledge provide the foundation for a prototype based on blockchaintechnology that gives the users increased security and forces those whostore personal data to be more transparent with the usage.

    In recent years, schools made large investments to increase the integration and use of contemporary technologies in teaching and learning.Today iPads and educational applications are growing in popularity and are commonly used. These technologies have a potential beneficial effect on the learning, but studies show that some applications have flaws that hinder these positive effects, for example regarding the feedback provided to the user. This study has determined a number of guidelines for effective feedback in a learning situation and has further shown how well these guidelines can be reached in an educational application today. The study shows that there are both advantages and disadvantages of feedback in an application compared to giving feedback in a more traditional learning situation. Many of the guidelines for effective feedback were found to be possible to reach in an application, and the greatest advantage found in applications is that they can provide feedback timely on each action taken by the pupils.

    Progression bars and spinners have long been the norm when providing feedback during wait times on the web. However, a more recent trend is the use of skeleton screens. This paper aims to evaluate the usefulness of skeleton screens as an alternative to spinners. This is done user testing a fictional news site with two variations, one showing skeleton screens before content is loaded, and another utilizing spinners. Both a questionnaire and measuring timing while finding a specified article when entering a website for the first time was used. The results show that the page using skeleton screens, scored higher on average on both perceived speed and ease of navigation. However, people using the page with spinners were faster at finding the article when entering the site for the first time. The results of this paper cannot show any significant differences in any of the comparisons between the web pages.

    When using online nudges to steer people in the right directionwhile they are making a decision, there is usually one preferable outcome.What might happen if the user experience is inadequate, will the nudgesstill work or might they be undermined? In this paper we investigate thecorrelation between user experience and digital nudges in a decisionmaking process. A user A/B test was conducted to investigate theproblem. The test participants visited one of two websites that includedthe same nudges where they were nudged to choose option (a) instead of(b). The only difference in the websites was the quality of the userexperience, one website design had a good user experience while the otherone offered an inadequate user experience. The results showed thateveryone who was assigned the good user experience chose (a), while twoof the inadequate experience participants chose (b). The results indicatethat user experience design can be used for digital nudging.

    This case study illustrates and analyzes the process of redesigning one of the largest news media site in Sweden during a cooperation between the Interaction Design Study Program at Umeå University and VK Media using a customer centric open approach. The results show that the design process used, both provided new insights for the industry and produced an appreciated website that facilitated the transition into a new revenue model using a paywall for digital content.

    Abstract [en]

    The technology and marketing channels to display and broadcast advertisements are ever changing; this has led to the change of many forms of advertisements. Public advertisements have not changed as drastically as many others and can therefore be seen as out-dated. In this paper a prototype of an interactive advertisement with a dynamic user flow is presented where focus has been on attracting attention. Different interaction technologies have been discussed and compared. A Kinect sensor has been used to sense when a pedestrian enters the area in front of the advertisement. When the prototype then presents itself to the sensed pedestrian the user’s reaction determines the prototype’s next state and so forth. The findings from a qualitative user study and a quantitative analysis of interactive and non-interactive advertisements’ noticeability is presented.
