"Ja men ni sitter ju bara i kassan, hur svårt kan det vara?": En studie om personalens känsloarbete i två livsmedelsbutiker2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Representations of Trans People in Swedish Newspapers2019Inngår i: Journalism Studies, ISSN 1461-670X, E-ISSN 1469-9699, Vol. 20, nr 9, s. 1319-1338Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyses the discursive representations of trans people in 15,901 mainstream Swedish newspaper articles between 2000 and 2017 using topic modelling and critical discourse analysis. Drawing from critical perspectives on gender it was found that the articles to various degree assisted in maintaining heteronormativity. The discursive strategies employed by the journalists included trivialisation of trans expressions as dress-up and incorporation of them within binary stereotypes. Trans people were also excluded and deemed as deviant in some articles through insensitive gender descriptions and descriptions. Through the voices of experts, trans people were silenced and pathologized and while some representations of trans people were meant to empower, and offered a slightly less rigid view on gender, these articles too reinforced heteronormativity through continuous referral to binary gender.

”Fandom is a legitimate hobby”: En netnografisk studie om användares erfarenheter kring deltagandet i fanfiction och fangemenskaper2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This is the first report from a research project entitled "Migration and Social Change". The problem discussed in the report concerns the causes and effects of migration from Yugoslavia after World War II. I look upon problems of migration as a process covering sequences in time and space, and as the process that in its internal dynamics connects history with the present events, small countryside community with the European metropols, Dalmatian peasant with the World economy. The report consists of three parts. The first part deals with selected aspects of the intereuropean migration especially with the questions of winners and losers in the flows of migration. The second part deals with the Yugoslavian emigration, its structural causes and its historical background. The focus is on the Reform of 1965, its socio-economic implications and effects. The third part deals with Yugoslavian emigration and its effects on the small countryside community of Vrlika. The local cuiturai-historical heritage and present events mix in a complicated manner in the local area as i.e. when the outside forces are impacting on the traditional modes of living, and in this process new problems and opportunities are developing.

Today, there are some 14* millioh migrant wörkérs in Ëurope. The difficulties in the transformations they have to undergo in the process of social change can only be understood by connecting the "culture of yesterday" with the "conditions of today".Migration research often lacks a dynamic perspective, i.e. it is seldom possible to find systematic studies in this field that include the socio-cultural origin of migrants. Such studies as there are overemphasize information on the present experiences of immigrants in their adopted contries or, which is equally unsatisfactory, they deal with mechanical dichotomies such as "before" and "after" experiences. In both cases, the process of social change is left out. This report is an attempt towards a more complete understanding of the connection between yesterday, today and tomorrow in the life of migrants. Becoming a discipline: the institutionalization of Library and Information Science in the Nordic countries2008Inngår i: Journal of Documentation, ISSN 0022-0418, E-ISSN 1758-7379, Vol. 64, nr 5, s. 721-737Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - The paper's objective is to analyze the social organization of library and information Science (LIS) using the Nordic countries as example, focusing on organizational setting, research work and relations between LIS and academia as well as the field of professional practice.

Design/methodology/approach - Based on a framework for analyzing scientific fields, as well as its application on LIS, aspects relating to the impact of contextual factors on research was identified and discussed based on information front, e.g. LIS institution web sites. The results were discussed, not only in relation to the framework primarily utilized, but also from a less disciplinary view on research organization, for analytical contrast.

Findings - A close connection between academic affiliation and research orientation was found, reflected in organizational issues, media for communicating research and access to resources. This relates to general issues of levels of independence front other disciplines and lay groups, to what extent research is evaluated by intra-disciplinary standards and to the level of consensus on terminology and research processes.

Research limitations/implications - Limiting the study to institutions in one particular geographical area, where several institutions being at an early stage of formalization, the possibility of reaching generalizable conclusions is limited. The strength of the conclusions is also somewhat restrained Clue to the nature oft he empirical material, being based on web documents with varying levels of exhaustability in terms of data provision.

Originality/vallue - The intellectual organization of LIS research is well-known, whereas social and imstitutional aspects have been analyzed to a lesser degree; and with the differences in age and size of Nordic LIS institutions, they provide an interesting case of contemporary institutionalization of LIS research.

Changes in the LIS research front: time-sliced co-citation analyses of LIS journal articles, 1990-20042007Inngår i: Journal of The American Society For Information Science And Technology, ISSN 1532-2882, E-ISSN 1532-2890, Vol. 58, nr 7, s. 947-957Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Based on articles published in 1990-2004 in 21 library and information science (LIS) journals, a set of cocitation analyses was performed to study changes in research fronts over the last 15 years, where LIS is at now, and to discuss where it is heading. To study research fronts, here defined as current and influential cocited articles, a citations among documents methodology was applied; and to study changes, the analyses were time-sliced into three 5-year periods. The results show a stable structure of two distinct research fields: informetrics and information seeking and retrieval (ISR). However, experimental retrieval research and user oriented research have merged into one ISR field; and IR and informetrics also show signs of coming closer together, sharing research interests and methodologies, making informetrics research more visible in mainstream LIS research. Furthermore, the focus on the Internet, both in ISR research and in informetrics-where webometrics quickly has become a dominating research area-is an important change. The future is discussed in terms of LIS dependency on technology, how integration of research areas as well as technical systems can be expected to continue to characterize LIS research, and how webometrics will continue to develop and find applications.

The social and intellectual development of library and information science2006Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The background of the project is partly found in a long tradition within library and information science (LIS) of meta-analyses on the field, partly in a science studies discussion on research fields and their contextual relation to wider academia, fields of professional

practices and professionalization processes. The general purpose of the project is to analyze the social and intellectual development and organization of LIS; and to investigate the impact of the close relation to the practice field, as well as the relation to the academic world in general. Based on the general purpose of the project and results and interpretations of the four articles attached to the thesis, three questions were stated for discussion in the thesis proper, concerning: the effects of a dual origin and LIS as a discipline, a field of research and a field of practice, the purpose of meta-studies and implications in terms of identity and perception of LIS; and competition and cooperation with other fields of research. Because of the heterogeneous nature of LIS, a variety of methods and materials was used in the different articles; and methodological issues on limits and bias in bibliographic databases – and the implications on the perception of research areas with varying publication and citation behaviour – were discussed. The analyses were performed against a theoretical framework, providing key organizational characteristics of scientific fields, relating to social, intellectual and contextual aspects, in combination with theories on scientific and disciplinary development, professionalization and interdisciplinarity; but also, for analytical contrast: alternate theories on the development of the sciences since 1945. LIS shows two distinct paths of development: research areas developing out of other fields of research; and a disciplinary development originating out of the field of practice and institutions for educating practitioners. Analyzing meta-studies of LIS, the picture of a field with a vague identity and a diverse self-understanding, even in terms of core characteristics, emerges. The relation to the wider academic community is characterized by diffuse boundaries towards, and competition from, other fields of research. In general, LIS is a fragmented field with a multitude of wildly varying research areas; and with large variations in terms of organizational setting; which together with a vague identity and diffuse boundaries, as well as the close connections to the field of practice, might contribute towards explaining problems LIS have been experiencing, establishing itself in academia. However, there are also signs towards an integration of a number of LIS research areas, as well as an increase in interdisciplinary cooperation, contradicting theories suggesting a further fragmentation; and supporting ideas on the sciences developing towards e.g. interdisciplinarity and applicability of results.

Life before and after Stroke: Living Conditions and Life Satisfaction in Relation to a General Elderly Population1992Inngår i: Cerebrovascular Diseases, ISSN 1015-9770, E-ISSN 1421-9786, Vol. 2, nr 1, s. 28-34Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Living conditions and life satisfaction before and after stroke were assessed in 80 patients with acute stroke (mean age 73 years). The results were compared with a general elderly population. Already prior to their stroke the patients had more health problems, lower functional ability, more passive leisure time and lower global life satisfaction. Low life satisfaction was associated with dependence in the activities of daily living (ADL). Economic resources, social network and psychiatric morbidity before stroke did not differ from the general elderly population. At 3 months of follow-up, almost half of the patients reported low life satisfaction, compared to only 2% in the national sample. Major depression and ADL dependence were associated with low life satisfaction after stroke. We conclude that much of the disability and handicap seen in stroke patients is present already before the stroke. Stroke-related deterioration of ADL performance, major depression and social disintegration after stroke interact to further reduce life satisfaction for the stroke victims and their families.

Lön efter kompetens?: En kritisk diskursanalytisk studie av sjuksköterskeupproret 20122013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

A stimulating, practice-based job facing increased stress: Clinical supervisors’ perceptions of professional role, physiotherapy education and the status of the profession2005Inngår i: Advances in Physiotherapy, ISSN 1403-8196, E-ISSN 1651-1948, Vol. 7, nr 3, s. 114-122Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The aim was to study perceptions of professional role, education and the status of the profession among clinical physiotherapy supervisors. Five focus group discussions were conducted with 15 supervisors attached to four universities in Sweden. Qualitative analyses were carried out using constant comparisons. Triangulation of researchers was used to increase trustworthiness. The supervisors experienced themselves as being in the centre of two competing and changing fields - the academic setting and the clinic in healthcare organization. The contact with students and their updated knowledge base were the most positive aspects of being clinical supervisors. To create a good learning environment for the students was considered important, but lack of time in all aspects of the work created stress and dissatisfaction. Students’ hands-on skills and treatment techniques were regarded to be rather poor and there is too much emphasis on theoretical knowledge and research methods in the curriculum. The physiotherapy profession has potentials to develop in innovative fields such as health promotion and disease prevention outside the hospitals, but healthcare with its hierarchical organization is a hindrance for this development. Collaborative efforts to bridge the gap between university and clinical setting are needed.

Team social cohesion, professionalism, and patient-centeredness: gendered care work, with special reference to elderly care – a mixed methods study2017Inngår i: BMC Health Services Research, ISSN 1472-6963, E-ISSN 1472-6963, Vol. 17, artikkel-id 381Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Healthcare organisations are facing large demands in recruiting employees with adequate competency to care for the increasing numbers of elderly. High degrees of turnover and dissatisfaction with working conditions are common. The gendered notion of care work as 'women's work', in combination with low salaries and status, may contribute to negative work experiences. There is abundant information about the negative aspects of elderly care health services, but little is known about positive aspects of this work. The study aim was to investigate work satisfaction from a gender perspective among Swedish registered nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists, focusing specifically on healthcare services for the elderly.

Methods: A mixed methods approach was adopted in which we combined statistics and open-ended responses from a national survey with qualitative research interviews with healthcare professionals in elderly care organisations. The survey was administered to a random sample of 1578 registered nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists. Qualitative interviews with 17 professionals were conducted in six elderly care facilities. Qualitative and quantitative content analyses, chi2 and constructivist grounded theory were used to analyse the data.

Results: There was a statistically significant difference in overall work satisfaction between those who worked in elderly care and those who did not (64 and 74,4% respectively, p < 0.001). Nine themes were derived from open-ended responses in the questionnaire. The qualitative interviews revealed four prominent storylines: 'Team social cohesion', 'Career development and autonomy', 'Client-centeredness', and 'Invisible and ignored power structures'.

Conclusions: The results show the complexity of elderly care work and describe several aspects that are important for work satisfaction among health professionals. The results reveal that work satisfaction is dependent on social interrelations and cohesion in the work team, in possibilities to use humour and to have fun together, and in the ability to work as professionals to provide client-centered elderly care. Power relations such as gendered hierarchies were less visible or even ignored aspects of work satisfaction. The storylines are clearly linked to the two central discourses of professionalism and gender equality.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate how individuals that have been playing pen and paper role-playing games since the 1990s to 2016 view their own experiences and the development of role-playing games. Six informants were interviewed in-depth about their experiences and how they view the change of roleplaying games and how society sees it. All the informants had been playing roleplaying games since the 1990s and are still playing. In the thematic analysis, five themes were identified: negative experiences, relationships, fantasy, development and normative change. This study exemplifies the complexity of belonging to a stigmatized group and also how a cultural phenomenon can grow, change and become accepted. It also highlights the role the informants themselves played in that change. Interestingly, it was found that the informants kept playing, despite the stigma around their hobby, because they found role-playing to be meaningful and stimulating and not for the reason that they identified themselves as role-players. Furthermore, all informants mention that thanks to role-playing they have developed a skill-set (e.g. creativity, problem-solving, understanding of group dynamics), which has become valuable to them later in life. The informants always believed that role-playing was something positive and meaningful, which also was confirmed once enough research had been done.

    Abstract [sv]

Ageing towards meaningful work?: Age, labour market change and attitudes to work in the Swedish work force, 1979–20032014Inngår i: Nordic Journal of Social Research, ISSN 1892-2783, E-ISSN 1892-2783, Vol. 5, nr 1, s. 161-189Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A central finding in earlier research is that attitudes to work generally are more positive among older workers than among younger workers. This result has been interpreted in two different ways, by the cultural and the structural hypotheses. The cultural hypothesis sees age differences as outcomes of generational differences. We would expect that different cohorts should hold different work attitudes and that the work values of an age group at an earlier point in time should be different from the work values of the same age group at a later point in time. The structural hypothesis sees age differences as expressions of labour market inequality between older and younger workers. This point of view leads us to expect that age differences in work attitudes will follow changes in the job structure and in working conditions.

Drawing on data from the Swedish survey of living conditions (ULF), attitude change within the Swedish work force during the period 1979–2003 was examined. Three sub-periods, 1986/1987, 1994 through 1996 and 2001 through 2003 were compared to 1979, the year of reference. The main results showed that a consistently lower share of the work force held extrinsic work values in the subsequent periods and this applied to all age groups. The results did not support the assumption that broader cultural differences between generations are central explanations of differences in work values. Older workers held extrinsic work values to a lesser degree than younger workers regardless of period. Most strikingly the gap between the youngest group on the labour market (aged 16

–29) and the older ones widened during the period. Furthermore, class differences in the distribution of the extrinsic attitude were intact throughout the study period; manual employees were consistently more likely to hold an extrinsic attitude than were service class employees. This implies that differences in the probability of extrinsic work attitudes have been identifiable regardless of period, but that their prevalence has decreased since jobs involving features related to extrinsic work values have decreased since 1979.

The long and winding road: A life course approach to retirement behaviour2013Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Background: This thesis explores the retirement behaviour of older people approaching retirement decisions. The research questions in focus deal with the attitudes toward work, the retirement preferences and the subjective well-being of the "youngest old", i.e. people aged 55–64. The included studies analyse the social determinants of these subjective evaluations and how they predict the timing of retirement and post-retirement well-being.

Methods: In the included studies, methods are used that allow us to follow developments over time. Repeated cross-sectional analyses are employed to examine general developments pertaining to the older work force. These include OLS and logistic regression analysis. Longitudinal analyses are used to follow individual developments over time. These include Structural equation modelling and Cox regression analysis.

Results: The results indicate that subjective evaluations such as attitudes to work and retirement preferences, as well as subjective well-being, are closely related to the structural conditions to which individuals are exposed, i.e. class position and work environment. The results also indicate that subjective evaluations such as preferred exit age and subjective well-being reported while in the work force are determinants of both the timing of retirement (in the case of preferred exit age and pre-retirement subjective well-being) and post-retirement subjective well-being (in the case of pre-retirement subjective well-being).

Also, results indicate that recent policy changes in the Swedish pension systems are reflected in the retirement preferences of the older work force. A comparison of two time-points representing the incentive structure of the old and the new pension systems indicates that preferences were delayed with pension reform.

Conclusion: The thesis contributes a temporal perspective to a research field that is dominated by research studying retirement behaviour at a single point of in time. The included studies underline the value of understanding retirement behaviour as a process rather than an isolated event. The way people evaluate their work, their well-being and their retirement prospects is intimately intertwined with their earlier experience. These subjective evaluations affect future retirement outcomes. Life course approaches offer illuminating tools for examining and explaining the significance of the biographies behind retirement behaviour.

Retirement preferences before and after pension reform: Evidence from a Swedish natural experimentManuskript (preprint) (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the change of retirement preferences in the Swedish work force between 2002/2003 (t0) and 2010/2011 (t1). In 2003 a new pension system was introduced in Sweden. A central aim was to postpone retirement. Work incentives were strengthened by linking benefits more closely to the individual’s labour market participation. Also, older workers were given the right to work until age 67 which meant that age 65 was abandoned as the statutory age of retirement.

Drawing on cross-sectional data from the PSAE surveys in t0 and t1, the aim of the paper is to examine how retirement preferences developed between the time when the new system was about to be introduced and a time when it had been set in place. The study design has the character of a natural experiment. The main results show that there was substantial change in how retirement preferences were distributed in the two time-points.

In general, the 55–64 year-olds in t1 preferred to retire later than the same age group did in t0. The share of the older workforce which preferred to retire beyond 65 doubled and the increase was clustered around age 67. Most strikingly, this pattern applies to most sub-categories. Even those who reported poor health and poor work environment preferred to retire later in t1 than the corresponding category did in the preceding time-point. The results indicate that the strengthened work incentives and public campaigns to raise awareness of them have had a general impact on the older workforce in Sweden. The strong increase in age 67 as a preferred exit age indicates that the norm of suitable exit age is being delayed from 65 to 67.

    Abstract [en]

This study is a case study of a locally rooted environmental campaign on the Swedish island of Gotland. We aim to enhance the understanding of how locality is manifested in social movements that emerge in today’s networked world. We analyse how the double goals of speaking to, as well as beyond, the local context came into expression in the movement's social media activities. We draw on data from tweets and Facebook posts and include interactions between activists and critics as well as the resources linked to in the posts. Analysis indicate that the conflict must be seen as spanning across local, national and global levels. In line with earlier research, activists used social media to link their struggle with other struggles. Also, it was used to charge the local struggle with symbolic content by framing it as one of many struggles between local communities, authorities and multinational corporations. Beyond this, posts from the island signalled dedication to the history and long-term interests of the community. We argue that future studies should recognise the crucial role that reciprocity norms in the local community can play for outcomes of conflicts and that the notion of a 'local moral economy' can be used to reach a deeper understanding of this.

A wish come true?: A Longitudinal Analysis of the Relationship between Retirement Preferences and the Timing of Retirement2013Inngår i: Journal of Population Ageing, ISSN 1874-7884, E-ISSN 1874-7876, ISSN 1874-7884, Vol. 6, nr 1-2, s. 99-118Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the relationship between retirement preferences, expressed as preferred retirement age, and actual retirement age in Sweden. The data were drawn from the Swedish Panel Survey of Ageing and the Elderly (PSAE). The PSAE was fielded in 2002 and 2003 with the aim of mapping living conditions of older people in Sweden. The data, which have a powerful longitudinal component, cover a broad spectrum of welfare indicators such as health, daily activities, social interactions, labour market and working conditions, and attitudes towards and experiences of retirement. Cox regression analysis was employed to explore whether and to what extent retirement preferences had any impact on actual retirement age. The results imply that retirement preferences do represent, in relation to other known key factors, an isolated influence on retirement patterns. The introduction of time-dependent variables strengthened this argument by showing how the “hazard” for the timing of retirement varied during the study period: those who preferred to retire close the end point of the study period were more likely to retire at this time than those who preferred to retire after the end of the study period and those who preferred to retire at the beginning of the study period. The results also indicated that the categories that wished to retire close to the beginning of the study period were more likely to retire at this point of time. The study thus provides empirical support for those researchers, debaters and policymakers who have addressed the importance of changing preferences towards later retirement in order to prolong working life.

Virtuella team - interaktioner, engagemang och emotioner2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Librarians are vicious monsters, but canalso recommend a good read: En analys av alternativa bibliotekarieframställningar iscience fiction-litteratur2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Objectives: The aim of this study is to examine how the Swedish contact familysystem works in practice. The main focus of the study is on the relationship between the contactfamilies and the social services. What kind of help can the contact families expect to get from the social services and what do they feel could be added to that information? I also focus on the perspective of the social services and ask what kind of support they usually try to give contact families both before and during an assignment.

Theory: The theoretical framework draws on ideas about which kind of families are connected to the ideal family, who the contact family system should support, role of the contact family, problems surrounding the system and the teamwork between social services and the contact families.

Methods: The study is based on four semi-structured interviews with one social secretary and three contact families selected througha targeted selection.

Results: I found that the contact families are dependent on the social services and their support in order to complete their assignment. Good relations between the social services and contact families is an essential part of this since confidentiality agreements make it difficult for the contact families to confide in other parties. There are a variety of things that could help contact families, such as education, one specific contact at the social services among other things. However these actions need to be led by the social services since a part of their job is to protect the children. As it is today the contact families feel that the support is lacking a bit, due to the difficulties connected with reaching the right parties in the social services, among other things. The respondents had a variety of suggestions connected to strengthening the system.

Conclusions: The results show that the social services do not have any kind of official support to offer the contact families, however the social secretaries usually take it upon themselves to support the contact families even though they don't have any official time set out for it, since it is needed in order to enable the contact families to carry out their assignments. In order to strengthen the system it could be helpful for the contact families to have their own social secretary who is theirs regardless of their assignment.

Conflict and concord in work and family: Family policies and individuals' subjective experiences2012Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Background This thesis explores the relationship between individuals’ subjective experiences and the welfare state setting. The research questions in focus deal with the outcomes of women’s and men’s increasing dual roles in work and family in contemporary welfare states. The studies analyse women’s and men’s subjective experiences of combining work and family, and their perceptions of fairness in the division of household work.

Methods The thesis applies a comparative perspective where the unit of analysis is country and/or family policy model. A broad perspective with the aim to capture general patterns across a broad range of welfare states is combined with a narrower case-oriented approach. Multilevel analysis is used to analyse patterns at national as well as individual levels in the same model. Latent Class Analysis is used to capture patterns of latent dimensions with regard to the central concept of subject experiences.

Results The results indicate that the introduction of policies aiming to promote dual roles among women and men and the articulation of gender equality can matter for individuals’ subjective experiences of work-family conflict. In dual-earner countries, the probability that a high level of conflict is counterbalanced by feelings of life satisfaction is higher than in other policy models. A class asymmetry is found when it comes to effects of policy on men’s and women’s levels of work-family conflict and work-family satisfaction; women in the working class and the salaried class are more similar when it comes to experiences of work-family conflict and satisfaction in Sweden than in Germany and the UK. The analysis also shows that perceptions of fairness in the division of housework are moderated by the institutional and normative context. The politicisation of gender equality increases the correspondence between actual share of housework performed and the perceptions of fairness in the division of housework. The effect of politicisation is more important for men’s perceptions than for women’s.

Conclusion The thesis contributes to a deepened understanding of the relationship between policy and work-family conflict and the integration of the perspectives of role conflict and role expansion; knowledge about the ways in which both class and gender relations are structured concerning the patterns of work-family conflict and satisfaction in different policy contexts; and new knowledge about the relationship between policy and men’s – and not only women’s – perceptions of fairness in the division of household work.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to explore theinteractive effects of gender, social class and public policy on men’s andwomen’s subjective experiences of work-family conflict and work-familysatisfaction. The central idea is that effects of gender and class covariatebetween different types of family policy models. Most previous comparativeresearch on the experiences of work-family conflict among women and men indifferent social contexts has assumed that class effects are similar acrosspolicy models. However, the results in this paper point to a class asymmetrywhen it comes to effects of policy on men’s and women’s levels of work-familyconflict and work-family satisfaction in three countries representing typicalcases with regard to family policy model (Germany, the UK, and Sweden). Theanalysis draws on data from the 2002 round of the International Social SurveyProgramme concerning family and changing gender roles, and shows that patternsof work-family conflict and work-family satisfaction differ among welfarestates. In Sweden women both in the working class and the salaried classexperience higher work-family conflict than men. However, these feelings ofconflict go hand in hand with correspondingly higher levels of work-familysatisfaction. In Germany class cleavages are more prominent than gender withregard to experiences of work-family conflict, while in the UK, women in thesalaried classes stand out with the highest level of work-family conflict ofall groups. In both Germany and the UK, experiences of work-family satisfactiondo not differ significantly between men and women in different classes.

Is it fair to share? Perceptions of fairness in the division of housework among couples in 22 countries.2013Inngår i: Social Justice Research, ISSN 0885-7466, E-ISSN 1573-6725, Vol. 26, nr 4, s. 400-421Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores the relationship between the actual division of housework and men’s and women’s perceived fairness in this regard. The central question is how the actual sharing of housework influences the perceptions of fairness in the division of housework. It is hypothesized that the perceptions of fairness differ between policy models. In countries where gender equality has been more present on the political agenda and dual-earner policies have been introduced, people are expected to be more sensitive to an unfair sharing or division of housework. By analysing the relationship between actual division of housework and perceptions of fairness in household work for 22 countries representing different family policy models, the study takes on a comparative perspective with the purpose of analysing the normative impact of policy. The analysis draws on data from the 2002 round of the International Social Survey Programme on family and changing gender roles. The results show that in countries that have promoted gender equality through the introduction of policies with an aim to promote dual roles in work and family, both women and men are more sensitive to an unfair division of household labour. The difference between perceptions in the different policy models is greater among men than among women, indicating that a politicization of the dual-earner family is more important for men’s equity perceptions than women’s.

    Work-family conflict in the Nordic countries: a comparative analysis2012Inngår i: Journal of Comparative Family Studies, ISSN 0047-2328, E-ISSN 1929-9850, Vol. 43, nr 2, s. 165-184Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to examine men's and women's subjective experiences of work-family conflict in the Nordic welfare states. These countries are often considered to be frontrunners with regard to gender equality, especially regarding the provision of policies that aim to support the reconciliation between work and family life. However, previous research has produced divergent results in response to the question of whether the welfare state institutions of the Nordic countries help to reduce work-family conflict. Do supportive institutions matter, or is the household division of labour of greater importance regarding experiences of work-family conflict? Drawing on data from the 2002 module of the International Social Survey Programme, the analyses indicate that experiences of work-family conflict among Nordic men and women can be divided into three clusters: work-family balance, occupational work overload, and dual work overload. In spite of their shorter working hours, women experience higher levels of work-family conflict than men. An unfair division of housework also increases work-family conflict. In the main, experiences of work-family conflict do not differ greatly among the Nordic countries, with the exception of Finland, where the level is lower than in the other countries. This points to a difference within the Nordic welfare state regime regarding the transition towards gender equality.
