Jag uppfinner en plats i dikten där vi kan vara tillsammans: En litterär studie i förlusten av ett modersmål2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The objective of this thesis is to examine how the bereavement of a mother tongue in various ways affects a person and how literature discusses this experience. How does literature reflect it and is it possible to identify any specific and recurring themes? Are there any similarities between the experience of migration and the experience of colonialism? What purpose does writing serve in this and how to describe the impact of language? Hopefully this thesis will contribute to a better understanding of the situation for newly arrived people and for persons living in Sweden with Swedish as a second language.

The thesis has a postcolonial perspective as the focus is fiction dealing with a relocation from east to west. Earlier research and writings that has inspired is in particular the works by the two postcolonial theorists Franz Fanon and Sara Ahmed. The main source material for the study is literary works, e.g. the works of Jila Mossaed, Theodor Kallifatides, Athena Farrokhzad, Burcu Sahin and Yoko Tawada. The thesis is intentionally written in the form of an essay, suggesting the power of language and storytelling. The main objective of the thesis is to describe, rather than to arrive at a conclusion. One main focus is the author’s personal relation to the subject and to the Philippines and its colonial past.

The literary works addressed in this study suggests that literature dealing with migration and language bereavement mainly focuses on a discussion about the relation between the native tongue and the new language, the relation between the metaphysical body and the new geographical location, about feelings of speechlessness and alienation that becomes physical. All these concurrent themes can be used as tools to define an experience that in many aspects is inconceivable. The thesis also identifies similarities between colonialism and migration, as both raise the question of inherit right to a place and a lifelong search for a place to call home. In this effort, writing is important and may function as an emancipatory lever to create new places.

Apokalypsen som vision2010 (ed. 1)Book (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this book is to discuss and exemplify the phenomenon of the Apocalypse in the works and thoughts of Andrei Tarkovsky (1932-1986).

After an introduction in the first chapter, the first of the analytical chapters presents the life and works of Andrei Tarkovsky and looks at the apocalyptic motif in his oeuvre, as well as his thoughts and film aesthetics. The chapter also examines the term Apocalypse, which has accumulated a variety of meanings through the centuries, and the history of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction, mainly literature and film.

The second analytical chapter focuses on Tarkovsky's film "Andrei Rublev" (1966), its historical context and narrative, and presents a substantially new reading of key scenes - especially the epilogue which shows details of several icons by S:t Andrei Rublev. The chapter also includes an introduction to icons and a short biography of S:t Andrei Rublev, in order to be able to relate the film to traditions in Russian art, aesthetics and intellectual history.

Apart from the analytical chapters by Christo Burman mentioned above, the book contains Tarkovsky's essay on the Apocalypse from the 1984 lecture in St James's Church, London, an interview with the director on the subject of religion and belief (previously published in "Nytt Liv" 1985), a detailed filmography and the largest Swedish bibliography to date of material on Andrei Tarkovsky.

Svenska elevers läsning2012In: Svenskämnet i går, i dag, i morgon.: Svensklärarföreningens årsskrift 2012 / [ed] Gustaf Skar & Michael Tenberg, Stockholm: Svensklärarföreningen , 2012, 1, p. 162-177Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

The Function of Religion in Jane Eyre from a Feminist Viewpoint.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is a literary analysis of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, which focuses on how female and male characters approach religion. A stark contrast is presented between the two approaches - differing according to gender - which point to two different forms of religion. The novel highlights one form, the religion of the heart, as the superior form as it empowers women to achieve spiritual, mental and physical independence. The analytical approach is based upon Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar’s theory of imprisonment/escape as well as Carol Gilligan’s discussion of ethic of care and ethic of justice. Through these theories my study shows that the function of religion in the novel is not to discredit it, but to bring to the fore the disadvantages and benefits of religion. In the character Jane a biblical feminism is displayed which challenges the novel's patriarchal society.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The idea of my work was to investigate the significance of the surroundings for a story. In my work I chose to work with two books from two different authors. One book is called Priset på vattnet i Finistère, (in English: The price of water in Finistère) by Bodil Malmsten (2001) and the other book is called Vad jag talar om när jag talar om löpning, (in English: What I talk about when I talk about running) by Haruki Murakami (2010). From these books I selected some scenes and moved them to a new environment in my literary experiment, to study what happens to the scenes when they take place somewhere else. The questions I have been working with is as follows:

    How is the environment shaped?

How does the story change when the environment changes?

What significance does the environment have on the story?

In my study I found out that the surroundings are important for the story, because the story need somewhere to take place. But I can also say that the importance of the surroundings depends on the story itself. In some stories, the environment can be a fundamental part of the story, that cannot be replaced. But in other stories the environment is not that important, and could therefore be replaced without significantly affecting the story.

Eyvind Johnson’s Hybrid North: Dynamics of Place and Time in Travelogues and Memory Sketches 1943–19632014In: Journal of Northern Studies, ISSN 1654-5915, Vol. 8, no 1, p. 19-36Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article explores the depiction and understanding of the Swedish North in memory sketches and travelogues, published between 1943 and 1963, by the author Eyvind Johnson, who was born in 1900 in Svartbjörnsbyn in Sweden’s northernmost county, Norrbotten, and went on to win the Nobel Prize for literature in 1974. The overarching argument of the article is that a creative interplay between places, "traffic," time and memory in Johnson’s writing shapes a hybrid picture of the Swedish North as a dynamic, inclusive and multidimensional domain, making Johnson’s articulations of the North of heightened relevance today. While frequently preoccupied with the past, Johnson’s representations of the North are always also, explicitly or implicitly, grounded in a contemporary political, economic or environmental context, be it world-war preparedness, welfare development, cold-war crisis, or increased utilisation of natural resources. The article begins by focusing on memory sketches that belong to official antho-logies celebrating milestones in the history of administrative structures and demarcations in the North. In these contexts, Johnson operates as an ambassador for the North, while providing incisive, at times critical, perspectives on past and present in the region. Drawing on theories of travel writing as a hybrid and "freer" form of writing, the article goes on to discuss how Johnson in travelogues such as Winter Journey in Norrbotten (1955) and "Summer Diary from Norrbotten" (1963) journeys into contemporary landscapes and townscapes that, at the same time, contain the traces or contours of his personal past. In these texts, Johnson acts both as a child of the North and as a special reporter approaching from the South in order to familiarise external audiences with the region. The article concludes by demonstrating how Johnson in Winter Journey uses contexts and concepts of travel to explore the relationship more broadly between his literary activity and the northern experience. In its finishing argument, the article suggests that notions of hybrid creativity and "transport" of motifs, material and perspectives are key to Johnson’s literary practice and "programme" in relation to the Swedish North.

Dags att skrota "lång och kort vokal" inom svenska som andraspråk2013In: Svenskans beskrivning 32, 2011 / [ed] Björn Bihl, Peter Andersson, Lena Lötmarker, Karlstad, 2013, p. 296-304Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Perceived quality of Swedish with a foreign accent: Comparison of speech with different temporal organization2012In: Proceedings: FONETIK 2012 / [ed] Anders Eriksson, Åsa Abelin, Göteborg: Göteborgs universitet , 2012, p. 135-138Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In an attempt to study variations in perceived quality as an effect of temporally differing Swedish with a foreign accent, recordings of one Spanish and one Estonian speaker were presented to groups of native Swedish listeners. Both inter-speaker differences as well as intraspeaker differences between intact and manipulated versions were studied. Temporal manipulations refer only to the durations of phonologically long segments. Segments were lengthened in the case of the Spanish speaker and shortened in the case of the Estonian speaker. Listeners tended to rate the pronunciation of the Estonian speaker higher than that of the Spanish speaker regardless of intact or manipulated version, whereas listeners who compared intact version to manipulated version tended to rate versions with “long sounds” higher than versions with “short sounds”. A substantial part of the native Swedish listeners rated intact and manipulated versions equally, but if they rated one over the other, the “long sound ” version was always rated as bestpronunciation with respect to three quality-related variables.

Relative durations of post-vocalic consonants in readaloud Spanish by native Swedish L2-learners2013In: Proceedings of Fonetik 2013: The XXVIth Annual Phonetics Meeting 12–13 June 2013, Linköping University Linköping, Sweden / [ed] Robert Eklund, Linköping: Linköpings universitet , 2013, p. 81-84Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Prosody is said to be a persistent feature in foreign accents, particularly in the speech of adult learners. Native Swedish speakers have been reported to lengthen vowels in Spanish as well as post-vocalic consonants in English and German, more than native speakers of the respective languages. The aim of the present study is to examine whether native Swedish learners of Spanish produce increased postvocalic consonant durations in a reading aloud exercise. The text contains certain words that could be expected to trigger complementary consonant lengthening in native Swedish speakers. The result shows that there is no general tendency for native Swedes to lengthen post-vocalic consonants more than native speakers of Spanish in the present speech material. There are examples of longer consonant durations in the speech of the native,Swedish subjects, but it could be a coincidence. A conclusion is that the text used in the study, and probably Spanish as a language, contains few words that are ideal for triggering lengthening of post-vocalic consonants in native Swedish speakers.

Att känna sig svensk: En studie i svenskhet ur vuxna invandrares perspektiv2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is devoted to the Swedish author and Nobel Laureate Eyvind Johnson. The study involves a rereading of his oeuvre and an attempt to reformulate the prevailing picture of the author and his works.

The study begins by discussing the image of Johnson, as he portrays himself and as he is viewed and talked about by others: readers, critics and researchers. The discussion leads to an attempt to understand what Foucault calls the author-function, as a web of narrative, internal and external, that of the author, the readers and the critics.

Something that Johnson calls “truth” is important for his oeuvre. This is linked to the author’s experience and a duty to present testimony about reality, what Johnson would call documents. This reasoning leads to a discussion of different readings and the potential of cognitive values in fiction, and to an exploration of large and small themes, the general and the particular. Autobiographical texts as well as private correspondence with colleagues and friends are discussed from this perspective.

Through studies of forgotten and buried or vanished layers – a method that could be called archaeological – the dissertation examines texts in Johnson’s oeuvre that have received less attention, often neglected or ignored. Early short stories, unsuccessful novels and rejected manuscripts can allow recurrent motifs and themes to stand out more clearly and indicate new ways to read the major canonical works in his oeuvre as well. Such themes are found to be abandonment and homosociality, sexuality and misogyny. Important but hitherto often neglected motifs become keys that open the novels to new, closer interpretations.

Central features in the study are analyses of the novels Krilon, Strändernas svall (Return to Ithaca, London/New York 1952) and Några steg mot tystnaden. These particularly concern betrayal and being let down, often staged in a gender context. The dissertation leads up to a discussion of what in Johnsons works is reflections on a male, and ultimately also a human predicament. Different concepts are tested: male tragedy, melancholy, but the analysis finally settles on the term male pessimism.

It is not Prometheus that represents Johnson but Sisyphus. One must endure, and perhaps imagine oneself happy.

The first part of this report consists of a theoretical survey of the metalinguistic domain, the main focus being upon metaphonological abilities. Metaphonological tasks are analyzed in terms of cognitive demands and degree of automaticity. The importance of metaphonological abilities for reading, spelling, and dyslexia is discussed on the basis of this theoretical analysis. It is assumed that metaphonological abilities are a prerequisite for learning to read and spell. In the second part results from three empirical studies are reported. In the first one 46 dyslexies and their matched control group were studied during their first three years at school. The development of metaphonological skills (segmentation, sound blending, sound position analysis, and segment deletion), language skills, cognitive abilities, reading, and spelling skills was studied on several occasions. The main purpose of this longitudinal study was to gain a better understanding of the causal relationship between metaphonological abilities and reading and spelling. Several causal structural equation models were tested by the LISREL method. The results supported the hypothesis that metaphonological abilities have a causal influence on reading and spelling while no support was found for a reverse causal influence. The purpose of Study II was to investigate the development of metaphonological skills. Two randomly selected classes were given four different metaphonological tests (segmentation, sound blending, sound position analysis and segment deletion) in grade 1 and grade 2. The results showed that metaphonological abilities undergo a substantial increase during the first years at school. The performance on metaphonological tasks was also very sensitive to small variations in task demands. In Study III the effects of metaphonological training on segmentation, blending and spelling were experimentally investigated in grade 1. There was a significant effect of training in the segmentaion and blending tasks. However, the effect of metaphonological training on spelling was significant only for the children with the lowest segmentation and blending pretest performance. The main conclusions to be drawn from the three studies were that metaphonological abilities are of critical importance for learning to read and spell. Furthermore, metaphonological abilities develop during a rather long period and some children might profit from carefully designed metaphonological training tasks in order to prevent reading and spelling disorders.

I riferimenti dei nomi secondo Antonio Rosmini2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [it]

Refugees in British Media Coverage: A Study of Dehumanizing Conceptual Metaphors2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study exemplifies, analyses and discusses the conceptual metaphors refugees are water and refugees are animals in British media discourse. In order to do this, examples of linguistic tokens of the metaphors were collected from four of the biggest newspapers in Britain; Daily Mail, The Sun, The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph. Linguistic tokens of the metaphors were found in all of the newspapers. The tokens of refugees are animals often appeared within quotation marks, whereas the refugees are water tokens appeared mostly unmarked, implying that refugees are water is more conventionalized than refugees are animals. The analysis of the tokens showed how different aspects of refugees are either highlighted or hidden when it is conceptualized in terms of water or animals. In the process of highlighting/hiding certain aspects of refugees, the refugees are dehumanized.

Attaching Meaning to Chinese Characters: A retrieval practice study of learners with no knowledge of Chinese2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

An increased demand for speakers of Mandarin Chinese (henceforth Chinese) in the West has lead to an increased need for high quality teaching of Chinese. In the present study, 24 native Swedish speakers with no prior Chinese language experience studied 60 Swedish words paired with their Chinese equivalents. Half of the pairs were learned by repeated studying (with the word pairs presented simultaneously) and half of the pairs by active retrieval (with the word pairs presented separately). The durations of repeated study and active memory retrieval were equated. All the Chinese characters were presented along with a phonological representation. After learning the 60 word pairs, a multiple-choice test was conducted to assess learning outcome. To test for for the importance of the phonological representation, half of the word pairs learnt in each condition had the representation removed during testing. Logistic mixed models found that performance was significantly better for repeated studying compared to active memory retrieval and that having access to a phonological representation during testing did not yield significantly better test performance.

Populärkultur i svenskundervisningen: En kvalitativ studie av textval i svenskundervisningen i grundskolans senare år2011Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The benefits of explicit knowledge for language learning is a much debated issue. In this study this question is approached from a new perspective since it focuses on the correlation between students’ concept images and their language ability. The focused concept is the subordinate clause in German. By means of a short written test the performance of 12 Swedish university-level students in three types of tasks was elicited: translating, correcting an erroneous text and commenting on grammatical differences in parallel German and Swedish texts. The students were asked to think aloud, but complementary questions were also asked if verbalizations were not lucid. A semi-structured interview that focused on school experiences, attitudes towards language learning and grammatical concepts followed. One year later the same procedure was repeated with three of the students who had successfully finished their first year of German. As for the concept images many students had only blurred conceptions of subordinate clauses, especially when they did not have access to texts to refer to. When they had the help from artefacts they often focused on visual clues such as subjunctions and verb position. Many verbalized statements were simply wrong. A common concept image described the subordinate clause as positioned after the main clause with the function of adding extra information. This led to the conclusion that the relative clause is the prototypical subordinate clause.Despite the often vague concept images, most students had no difficulty in producing subordinate clauses or in correcting a text with word order errors. Interestingly, the relative clause proved to cause the most problems. The fact that the students were able to produce subordinate clauses, but not able to explain their chosen solution indicates implicit knowledge. This in turn gives reason to believe that students have formed their own natural concepts from experience and not learned a well defined scientific concept. The students in this study could also be seen to represent stages in the concept building process that begins with a category ‘sentence’. Step by step different types of subordinate clauses break loose and form a new category ‘subordinate clause’. With time the attributes become more refined. The analysis of four Swedish grammars of German showed that three of them had content shortcomings, whereas the fourth placed too much emphasis on linguistic correctness which would leave the learners behind. In the last chapter implications for grammar writing and grammar teaching are discussed. One key point is the necessity of opportunities to verbalize your thoughts since this promotes learning

The Devil Wears Prada2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Place-Name Loaning Patterns as Cultural Survival Strategies in Sami Contexts2017In: Journal of Northern Studies, ISSN 1654-5915, Vol. 11, no 1, p. 53-70Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper discusses the place-name loaning patterns of one South Sami and one Inari Sami community that have plenty of parallel names in their area. The time span studied reaches from the end of the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century. The loaning and borrowing processes are analyzed and interpreted in a thoroughly studied cultural context. The author claims that the differences in loaning reflects different strategies that aim to secure the existence of minority language and culture, and that the place-names have been used as means of manifesting one’s cultural ownership to the land. The most important results based on the quality and distribution of the parallel names in the South Sami area reflects the existence of two separate name systems and a protective purist strategy toward outsiders. In the Inari Sami area the results indicate that the local Sami community has an open and pedagogical strategy towards outsiders and because of this they have shared the language-cultural code to the Finns. The author has been inspired in her study by the ideas presented in the field of ecological linguistics and cultural onomastics. This paper is based on the results of the author’s doctoral dissertation.

    Source use and argumentation behavior in L1 and L2 writing: a within-writer comparison2019In: Reading and writing, ISSN 0922-4777, E-ISSN 1573-0905, Vol. 32, no 6, p. 1635-1655Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to test whether Cummins' Linguistic Interdependence Hypothesis (LIH) might also apply to writing, by determining to what extent writers' text quality, source use and argumentation behavior are related in L1 and L2, how effective writers' behavior is and whether their L2 proficiency influenced the relations between them. To answer these questions, twenty students wrote four short argumentative source based essays each in L1 (Dutch) and four in L2 (English). A within-writer cross-linguistic comparison of their texts revealed that their L1 and L2 writing competencies appear to be related. Furthermore, writers' source use behavior differed to some extent between languages, but the strong positive correlations found between source use features suggest that in most cases this was more a person than a language effect. Similarly, for argumentation behavior, results showed some learner specific features (e.g. inclusion of titles and reference lists), but differences between languages for others (e.g. the inclusion of both arguments and counter-arguments). Effects of the different source use and argumentation features studied on text quality were limited and no clear effect of L2 proficiency on writers' behavior or their influence on text quality were found. Overall, in line with earlier research, these findings provide some additional support for Cummins' LIH and the idea that writers might have a common underlying source for writing related knowledge and practices which they can apply in multiple languages.

"Inside the Fat Woman, Trying to Get out": Louise Glück's Lyric Poetry and the Aesthetics of Anorexia2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In How to Disappear Completely, Kelsey Osgood asserts that modern accounts of anorexia are often written in first person and glamorize the illness. Moreover, these memoirs are often written from the perspective of a healed body and thus, the authenticity of these memoirs is questionable. Or as Strawson argues, "telling and retelling one’s past leads to changes, shifts away from the facts" (Strawson 447). This trend is clearly observed in most narratives of anorexia nervosa, wherein the past is reinvented and reshaped.

The anorectic’s story then, is a misrepresentation of the illness experience as the narratives are a fabricated reconstruction of the past. Addressing this issue, scholars such as Lawrence J Kirmayer and Josie Billington propose that rather than the narrative form, the lyric poem is better suited to capture illness experiences as "lyric poetry tends to emphasize simultaneity, evoking a moment of consciousness." (L. J. Kirmayer 20) .

Drawing from current theories in medical humanities, my thesis analyses the lyric poems of Louise Glück on anorexia nervosa and asks the following questions – Is there an anorexic aesthetic in lyric poetry? How does the lyric form contribute to our understanding of the illness and finally, is the lyric form better suited to convey, understand, and examine the illness?

Arabiska som elevens val: En intervjustudie om makt och inflytande i en specifik beslutsprocess på en skola2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Queering the Detective Novel2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Agatha Christie's novels have previously been studied for their intricate puzzles and her many ways of concealing the murderer and misleading the reader. Her novels may be considered two-dimensional, middlebrow and domestic with their confined, often rural settings, stereotypic characters and an almost complete lack of sex and violence. Thus, the texts of Christie are not what come to mind when thinking of queer theory. However, this does not mean that her texts cannot be queered. This essay explores the queer elements of the texts and provides a queer reading based on queer theory and gender theory. It becomes apparent that the queerness of Christie’s detective novels is formed from her convention-breaking style, her eccentric detectives and stereotypic characters in combination with an abundance of narrative clues pointing towards a less ordered universe beneath the traditional surface of English society. Superficially, Christie’s detective novels may seem to re-establish the status quo in society, although a closer look will reveal that it is not so. Central to her narratives are the detectives, who are operating outside of the legal system, thus introducing social disorder by circumventing police, judge and executioner. Moreover, her stereotypic characters are all performers, presenting a persona, a disguise. This stereotyping is accomplished through irony and humour, in other words camp, with the detectives performing gender in an almost drag-like manner. This essay has merely glanced at ways of queering Christie’s detective novels and future studies could make a more in-depth study of ways in which Christie’s text can be queered, thereby changing our understanding of her texts.

    Abstract [en]

This monograph is an empirical study of the competition between the French movement verbs amener/apporter and emmener/emporter, regarded as partial synonyms in the sense that they are interchangeable in certain contexts. The main purpose of this study is to account for these competing verbs from the perspective of actual language use, and to determine to what extent they are synonymous. The study is based on a corpus of French newspaper texts, some literary texts and the answers from a group of informants.

It is shown that these lexemes cannot be defined by the principle of shared properties of all the senses represented. They are best analysed as polysemous within the framework of the prototype theory, according to which there is a basic sense from which the other secondary senses are derived through metaphor or metonymy. In the case of these verbs the competition between them arises through the widening of the semantic content of the verbs amener and emmener, extended to the use of inanimate objects uncapable of movement. This case normally calls for the use of the verbs apporter et emporter.

In response to the question of the degree of synonymy between these verbs, when adopting a cognitive perspective, it is argued that they are to be considered as lexical variants rather than as perfect synonyms, in the sense that they focus on different aspects of the described movement. In other words, there is an aspectual difference between these closely related lexemes which is determined not only by inherent semantic properties, but to a large extent also by non-linguistic properties, such as the perspective adopted by the speaker in describing the mouvement. Finally, it is pointed out that the prototypical sense of each verb not only explains the different derived senses it gives rise to, but also accounts for the aspectual difference between these competing verbs.

    Abstract [en]

The dissertation deals with the Municipal Theatre of Göteborg with special reference to the period between 1967 and 1971, during which the group theatre developed and paved the way for a repertoire of social criticism.

The theatre debate is viewed against the background of the socio-economic, ideological, and cultural development of the 1960,s. After describing conditions at the Municipal Theatre of Göteborg under Mats Johansson's management from 1962 onwards, the study concentrates on analysing three group theatre plays produced by Lennart Hjulström: Flotten (spring 1967) by Kent Andersson, Hemmet (autumn 1967) by Kent Andersson and Bengt Bratt, and Sandlådan (autumn 1968) by Kent Andersson.

The first play thematizes the ideological confusion of the middle-aged generation, the second the disappointment of the aged at the betrayal of socialist ideals, and the third the manipulative repression of children's education.

A series of stagings with strong elements of social criticism caused a long and intense debate in the summer of 1969 about both the repertoire and the internal conditions of the Municipal Theatre.

In spring, 1971, Kent Andersson and Bengt Bratt wrote Tillståndet (an ambiguous title meaning both 'condition' and 'permission'), by which the authors intended to expose the repressive tolerance of bourgeois society. This play functions as an evaluation of both the group theatre period and the situation of the theatre as a whole, and it is therefore analysed in a metaperspective. It also functions as a summary of the criticism of the Swedish welfare state.

The House of Stewart as Agent of Language Change: A Historical Sociolinguistic Corpus Analysis of Register Variation and Language Change in the Stewart Letters (1504-1669)2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present project set out to explore whether or not the members of one of the most powerful families in history functioned as agents of language change. Using the Parsed Corpus of Early English Correspondence (PCEEC), the present project examines and discusses linguistic conservatism and innovation in relation to the historical movement towards a Standard English. This is done by scrutinising six members of the house of Stewart that can be found in the PCEEC following theories and frameworks pertaining to the scientific discipline of sociohistorical linguistics. The findings of the present study suggest that the house of Stewart appears to have been in the vanguard of language change in several respects.

    Abstract [en]

This paper discusses the asymmetry in selectional restrictions found in the basic causative typology of Kayne (1975) and Burzio (1986), drawing heavily on data from the Finno-Ugric language Torne Sámi, proposing that the Base Object in Faire Par causatives participates in a Control-relation, which has the effect of reducing the kind of Objects that can occur in this causative type. In essence, the surface Object is not an argument of the Base Verb, but rather, it is an argument of the causative formative. However, no comparable restrictions are found in the Faire Infinitive construction. In these, the Base Verb can take the same range of complements that it can when it is used as a simplex matrix verb. It is therefore reasonable to conclude that the surface object in Faire Infinitives is also the actual Object of the Base Verb.
