    I takt med internets framväxt uppkommer nya sätt att interagera och kommunicera med varandra. I"dagens"samhälle"använder"sig"majoriteten"av"studenter"och"företag"dagligen"sig"utav"internet"och"sociala"medier. I och med denna utveckling finns det en otrolig chans att marknadsföra sig själv både som student och företag för en väldigt liten kostnad. Även om man är ett mindre företag, eller är etablerade på en internationell marknad så finns ett behov av att synas och vara tillgänglig på de ställen som målgruppen och konkurrenterna finns.Examensarbetet nedan handlar om sociala medier, och hur företag kan locka och synas för Umeå universitets studenter genom dessa. Jag kommer att se resultatet ur aspekten arbetsgivarvarumärke (employer branding) och hur företag kan påverkas positivt och negativt genom att använda sig utav sociala medier i sin marknadsföring gentemot studenter på Umeå universitet.Rapporten kommer att ta upp både de de teoretiska delarna som uppkommer i och med sociala medier och de frågeställningarna som ligger till grund för rapporten. För att få ett bra underlag för rapporten har enkäter skickats ut till både företag och studenter för att få två sidors perspektiv. Detta kommer sedan att följas upp med en diskussions del, där vi får svar på frågor som bland annat ” Vilka medier används flitigast av företag och studenter?”Avslutningsvis kommer detta att sammanfattas i en slutsats del, där vi bland annat kan se att Linkedin är i dagsläget väldigt högt prioriterat hos företag medan för många studenter är det personliga mötet fortfarande viktigast.

    A Recipe for Responsiveness: Strategies for Improving Performance in Android Applications2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Mobile applications are expected to be fast and responsive to user interaction, despite challenges mobile platforms and devices face in terms of limited computational power, battery, memory, etc. Ensuring that applications are performant is however not trivial, as performance bugs are difficult to detect, fix, and verify. In order for mobile applications and devices to appear perfectly responsive to the user, they need to meet a 60 frames per second frame rate, and keep load times preferably between 0-300 ms. Meeting these expectations means that there is no room for performance bugs, so there is a need for improving and developing better testing tools and strategies in order to help mobile developers improve performance in their applications.

    This thesis investigates strategies for testing and improving performance in Android applications by conducting a literary study, and a case study with the Spotify Android application. Some of the key findings of this thesis include promising results from tools that visualise sources of performance bugs in the user interface of applications, as well as proposed strategies and tools aimed to help developers profile and improve performance in their Android applications.

    Abstract [en]

    As the final course in the education “University Diploma Programme for Process Operators” there is a thesis in cooperation with a company required.This thesis is about operator maintenance and 5S made at Metsä Board in Husum.In this report you can read my opinions and conclusions based on literature studies and the interviews that have been made with the staff at PM6 (the paper machine).I chose to focus on the theory of lean, 5S and operator maintenance because it covers the area of this thesis.The operators shall do their rounds to make sure that the equipment works fine. They shall also write down things that they notice in a checklist. This is not done as it should be and the question is: can this be solved by using 5S?My conclusion of this thesis are:Better review of the task so that everyone is involved. The equipment should be clearly marked, and to digitize - for example, with an NFC tag the checklist is automatically filled in by the operator standing nearby the machine. The motivation of the operators will be increased if they are given feedback and clear objectives.

    Abstract [en]

    Smart TV, also known as Connected TV, is the new generation of television. It can be connected to the internet and enables the user to surf the web and use TV specific applications. The TV applications available today however are more like smartphone applications shown on a big screen. Applications should take advantage of the fact that they are located on a TV and make use of TV specific content. Smart TV can engage the viewer by a more interactive way of ”watching” TV. The way TV consumers watch TV today has been analysed and a changein consumer behaviour has occurred over the last decade. The TV viewershave gone from a relaxed TV mood with all focus directed towards the TV to a multitasking mood, using second screens for additional activities related, as well as unrelated, to what is on the TV. People want toengage in a more interactive way of watching TV and this is especially true for so called ”borderless” consumers which include people that like and owns technical devices.In this thesis a prototype of a Smart TV application that takes advantage of the content available on the TV, called Quiz TV, was developed. It engages the user in a more interactive way of watching TV and lets the user play a quiz about what is shown on the TV while watching it. This can be done alone, together or against others. The results from a user test of the prototype show that most of the users would play the game if it existed for real and would like a more interactive way of watching TV.As people already have an active way of watching TV, and would preferan even more interactive one, the future of the Smart TV and the Quiz TV application is seen as promising.

    Abstract [sv]

    Test har utförts för att jämföra två huvudburna displayer (HMD), Penny Interactive Glasses och Sony Glastron, med traditionella displaymetoder för att presentera information i stridsfordon. Testen innehöll ett antal scenarion kring två olika aktiviteter. Testen har utförts i en simulerad miljö bestående av ett antal datorer, en mock-up av ett fordon och en projektor. Testresultat har utvärderas med Nasa TLX, vilket är ett program för uppskattning av arbetsbörda.

     

    Enkla test utfördes för att se hur ljusnivån påverkade användandet av HMD utomhus och om enkla filterlösningar var tillräckliga för att lösa problemen.

     

    Fokus i testen låg på en HMD från Penny som hade några intressanta hands-free lösningar för att styra applikationer. En bedömning gjordes av hur väl dessa lösningar fungerade och vad, om något, som behövde förbättras för att detta skulle vara praktiskt användbart.

     

    Förutom att göra en bedömning av om HMD:er är en lösning som faktiskt underlättar arbetet i ett stridsfordon har vi också försökt komma fram till några förslag på hur de skulle kunna förbättras inom områden så som passform och användarvänlighet.

     

    Vi kom fram till att HMD-lösningar potentiellt kan fungera bättre än nuvarande lösningar om de används på rätt sätt. För användning i varierande ljusförhållanden behövs någon lösning som kan variera filterstyrka eller displaystyrka. HMD:n från Penny har brister i sina hands-free lösningar som måste åtgärdas för att den ska vara praktiskt användbar.

    Abstract [en]

    This report is the final part of my studies at the Media Producer Programme at Umeå University. This report is about a project to the Church of Sweden Youth, which has been to direct an information film to on the topic annual meeting.

     

    To implement this project in a good way, a literature review on the Dramaturgical curve has been done. The literature review focus on what the differences and similarities between the dramaturgical curve for television and film productions is, how to capture the audience's interest in general and also how to structure a good information film, as well as things that may be helpful to think about. This is presented in the theory section along with references.

     

    The report also present specifically about what has been done, how and why. In the report you can also read my thoughts concerning the project and the thesis as a whole. This is presented in the later part of the report - implementation, results and discussion.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis represents a development from start to a proof of concept for an automobile configurator with 3D visualization. This proof of concept must be independent from other products and should only need a web browser to use. To be able to develop this type of product certain methods must be researched, these include; methods for developing a web based user interface for interaction with a 3D model, different methods for reducing data size of CAD models as well as visualizing the model. As there were two designers working alongside to develop this proof of concept, there was a good opportunity to try different approaches in terms of interface and test them on probable future users. A more conventional approach was preferred by the users and therefore chosen to be developed into a final design that would be for the website. When developing, certain features had to remain unimplemented due to time and resource restraints but the test users were still enthusiastic about such a product if the different aspects were to be polished.

    Den här rapporten redovisar examensarbetet vars huvudsyfte var att förstå teori och beräkningsgången bakom förspända betongelement samt att jämföra den med teorin för slakarmerade betongelement. Arbetet valdes eftersom inga kurser under studietiden har beaktat denna typ av utformning samt eftersom tillämningen av kunskapen inom området är stor ute i arbetslivet. Arbetet slutfördes genom inläsning av litteratur samt handledning.

    Det visade sig efter arbetet var slutfört att några delar av teorin och beräkningsgången bakom förspända betongelement var lik den som används vid slakarmerade betongelement, dock existerade även många skillnader. Likheterna erhålls bland annat vid beräkningarna av moment- och tvärkraftskapaciteterna. Skillnaden är att många extra steg måste utföras vid dimensioneringen, steg som till största del bara av olika kontroller, vilka utfördes bland annat vid dimensioneringen av tillverkningsprocessen och i brottgränstillstånd.

    Slutligen kunde det konstateras att förspända betongelement har många fördelar, vilka bland annat är att större spännvidder, mindre dimensioner på konstruktionerna samt mindre deformationer kan erhållas. Dock så krävs en större mängd beräkningar vid förspända än för slakarmerade betongelement.

    Angle Damping in Bundle Adjustment2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Bundle Adjustment is a common fine-tuning step used in photogrammetry. It uses different types of parameters, some of which can be considered to be almost linear while others can be considered to be highly nonlinear, e.g. the rotational parameters. However, in the Bundle Adjustment process all parameters are treated equal. In concert with a poor initial estimate, this might cause Bundle Adjustment to diverge. In this report, two novel methods based on the damped Gauss-Newton with Armijo linesearch, modified by giving rotational parameters a special treatment, are tested. These methods, Clamped Alpha and Linear Exponential Search, are compared to Gauss-Newton with Armijo linesearch, as well as to the undamped Gauss-Newton method, also known as the Gauss-Markov method. Parameter sweeps over different perturbation levels for the angular parameters show that each of the three damped methods outperform the Gauss-Newton method. Notably, the Clamped Alpha method also outperforms the other two damped methods, with as much as 16 times as many convergent cases for a given perturbation level. Meanwhile, the average number of iterations is increased by only 1.8 times that of the Gauss-Newton with Armijo linesearch. The results add to existing research arguing for the use of damped methods in Bundle Adjustment. In particular, the simple and cheap Clamped Alpha method is potentially attractive for problems where the uncertainty of the camera angles is significant. While the Clamped Alpha method show promising results, it should be noted that the experiments in this study are on synthetic data. In order to solidify these results, further investigations into the performance of Clamped Alpha using real-world data should be conducted.

    Abstract [en]

    This study shows that upper secondary students’ historical writing maybe influenced by their use of sources from traditional archives versus theiruse of digital sources in databases. A qualitative approach, theoreticalperspectives, and historical empathy seem to be stimulated primarily byusing traditional archives and print sources, while digital archives andsources, in contrast, stimulate the use of quantitative data and a moresocial scientific approach. The results indicate a historiographical shift instudents’ historical thinking, which researchers of history education needto consider in a digital era. The results of this study call for reflections inhistory teaching to make it possible for students to learn and experiencethe double nature of history as part of the humanities and social sciences

    In this study, 110 Swedish upper secondary students use a historical database designed for research. We analyze how they perceive the use of this digital tool in teaching and if they are able to use historical thinking and historical empathy in their historical writing and presentations. Using case-study methodology including questionnaires, observations, interviews and text analysis we find this to be a complex task for students. Our results highlight technological problems and problems in contextualizing historical evidence. However, students show interest in using primary sources and ability to use historical thinking and historical empathy, especially older students in more advanced courses when they have time to reflect upon the historical material.

    Abstract [en]

    Pentameric ligand-gated ion channels or Cys-loop receptors are responsible for fast inhibitory or excitatory synaptic transmission. The antipsychotic compound chlorpromazine is a widely used tool to probe the ion channel pore of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, which is a prototypical Cys-loop receptor. In this study, we determine the molecular determinants of chlorpromazine binding in the Erwinia ligand-gated ion channel (ELIC). We report the X-ray crystal structures of ELIC in complex with chlorpromazine or its brominated derivative bromopromazine. Unexpectedly, we do not find a chlorpromazine molecule in the channel pore of ELIC, but behind the beta 8-beta 9 loop in the extracellular ligand-binding domain. The beta 8-beta 9 loop is localized downstream from the neurotransmitter binding site and plays an important role in coupling of ligand binding to channel opening. In combination with electrophysiological recordings from ELIC cysteine mutants and a thiol-reactive derivative of chlorpromazine, we demonstrate that chlorpromazine binding at the beta 8-beta 9 loop is responsible for receptor inhibition. We further use molecular-dynamics simulations to support the X-ray data and mutagenesis experiments. Together, these data unveil an allosteric binding site in the extracellular ligand-binding domain of ELIC. Our results extend on previous observations and further substantiate our understanding of a multisite model for allosteric modulation of Cys-loop receptors.

    Abstract [en]

    Energy efficiency could be described as ”using less energy to provide the same service”.  There are many motivations to improve energy efficiency in buildings, for example financial cost savings to consumers and at the same time a reduction of the environmental and climate impact.

    In my thesis, I have on behalf of the real estate ”Skelleftebostäder” investigated one of their multi-residential properties to study possible energy efficiency improvements, such as replacement of the ventilation system, new windows and insulation of the attic floor. Life cycle cost analyzes have also been calculated to analyze how much each action will cost based on its lifetime, compared to if no action would be done.

    The work has mainly been conducted through literature studies with the use of the simulation program IDA ICE, where a model of the property has been constructed according to current conditions and energy needs. Subsequently, the simulations carried out for each energy efficiency act have then been compared with a reference house.

    The results showed that all the investigated energy efficiency acts would reduce the property´s energy use mainly by changing the ventilation system (which would reduce the property's energy performance by up to 35 %). Minimum savings of energy would additional insulation of the attic floor give; It would only reduce the energy performance by 4%. Of all the investigated energy efficiency acts and with regard to their life-length, it is however only new windows which turned out to be economical profitable for this building.

    Abstract [en]

    A reverberation chamber is a highly conductive cavity in which it is possible to generatehigh electromagnetic elds that can be considered statistically homogeneous. Reverberationchambers have existed as a resource for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing formore than 30 years. Working to promote international co-operation on standardization, severalorganizations have published various EMC standards. At Combitech AB in Linkopinghave a chamber that is commercially used for dierent types of measurements. To makethe chamber more attractive and versatile it is within their interest to get a system whichis compatible with the latest standards. The project aimed to develop a control system forthe reverberation chamber at Combitech and to equip it with functionality enabling it tomake measurements according to current EMC standards. Using the programming softwareAgilent VEE a program was developed to communicate with the supporting equipment andmanage test routines. Within the program software lies functionality directly associate withmode stirring and mode tuning procedures for standards DO-160F and MIL-STD. Duringmeasurements the program has abilities for skipping frequencies, pause/continue the currentsweep, executing preset events and adding commented markers to the plot window. Someother usable functionality implemented is project save/load, help section, directory selectionand data export abilities. The system holds functionality enabling measurements accordingto the standards in question, though future work will be needed to be able to carry througha proper and correct measurement routine.

    Designing interfaces for the visually impaired: Contextual information and analysis of user needs2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    This thesis explores how to design for the visually impaired. During the course of work, a literature study and interviews with blind and visually impaired people were conducted. The objective was to investigate what contextual information is wanted in new and unfamiliar spaces outside their home. The interviews also explored how they experience digital tools they are using today and what they think of the possibilities of voice and other user interfaces. The main finding from the study is that there are indications that multimodal interfaces are preferred. The interface should combine voice, haptic and graphics since the participants wanted to interact in different ways depending on functionality and context. Three main problem areas were identified, navigation, public transportation and shopping. Another result was that when developing for the visually impaired it should always be tested on people with a wide variation of vision loss to find the correct contextual information.

    Abstract [en]

    Usability is a common term used in discussions of WWW (World Wide Web). This is definitely important, as more and more web sites are frequently visited and many people claim the web as an important building block for the new economy or the network economy.

    However, the argument of this paper is that research so far have missed out important aspects of usability since their models for evaluation of web sites are based on traditionally usability concepts not optimized for web surfing but rather for measuring efficiency on tasks such as information search in traditional GUIs.

    This paper outline the framework used so far in research and practice to measure web usability and then, by illustrating how the "use" of the web sometimes is more then just information search it extends the traditional framework as a proposal for a more successful framework to measure real web usability.

    The paper concludes that there is a need to extend current frameworks for measuring web usability as well as it point out the importance of future research into the area of measuring how people actually are using web sites.

    Web usability is a common term used in discussions of WWW (World Wide Web). This is definitely important, as more and more web sites are frequently visited and have great impact in the new economy, the network economy.

    However, research lack in consistency in defining ‘web usability’. Some point out that the term is equivalent with the traditional term in HCI (Human Computer Interaction) research. Others point out the differences with traditional usability and do this with comparisons between the two.

    This article discusses the concept of usability in general as well as the notion of web usability and their relation. Further, a conceptual model is built to facilitate how to handle usability aspects on the web. This model is then exemplified with two examples of web sites. Here, the importance of choosing the right categorization is clear. The sites are both e-commerce sites, however, they show upon clear differences when it comes to usability aspects.

    Web usability is an important issue when it comes to design of web sites. We have to start to take it seriously.

    Over the last couple of years the field of Augmented Reality has transformed from something mainly seen in academic researchinto several examples of big commercially successful products, and the widespread use of highly capable mobile devices has greatly helped accelerate this trend. The powerful sensors in modern handsets enable designers to bring Augmented Reality implementations to the hands ofthe users.This thesis examines how Augmented Reality can be implemented onmobile platforms, mainly the iPhone 4, and surveys existing implementationsand solutions for developers. It presents a number of design guidelinesfor user interactions in AR on mobile devices that can be used fordesigners as a reference when designing user-centered mobile AR applications.

    Augmented Reality (AR), a concept where the real word is being enhanced with computer generated objects and text, has evolved and become a popular tool to communicate information through. Research on how the technique can be optimized regarding the technical aspects has been made, but not regarding how typography in three dimensions should be designed and used in AR applications. Therefore this master’s thesis investigates three different design attributes of typography in three dimensions. The three attributes are: typeface style, color, and weight including depth, and how they affect the visibility of the text in an indoor AR environment. A user study was conducted, both with regular users but also with users that were considered experts in the field of typography and design, to investigate differences of the visibility regarding the typography’s design attributes. The result shows noteworthy differences between two pairs of AR simulations containing different typography among the regular users. This along with a slight favoritism of bright colored text against dark colored text, even though no notable different could be seen regarding color alone. Discussions regarding the design attributes of the typography affect the legibility of the text, and what could have been done differently to achieve an even more conclusive result. To summarize this thesis, the objective resulted in design guidelines regarding typography for indoor mobile AR applications.

    Exploring self-efficacy in end-user programming: a feminist approach2014Licentiatavhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    Digital services and devices are today more spread than ever, forming a basis for new innovations, even among ordinary people. And yet, producers of such services and devices are mostly men with programming skills. Women's participation in development and design of digital products is thus not yet as influential as that of men.

    An approach to this situation is to offer web-based environments for end-user development where people with no programming experiences have the opportunity to develop their own smartphone applications. The SATIN project, a collaboration between universities and IT-companies, has taken such an approach, with a focus on supporting female end-users. This project has been serving as a case in this research with the purpose of exploring and understanding end-user programming related to self-efficacy and female strategies.

    Experiences from being a member of the SATIN project are accounted for as well as results from qualitative observation studies capturing subjects’ reactions to the system. In the first set of observations, 9 subjects tested a mock-up version of the so-called SATIN editor, where the actual app building takes place. Later on a second set of observations with 11 subjects focused on how to support computer self-efficacy and end-user programming strategies that women prefer to a higher degree than men.

    Observations indicate that the women where as positive to making use of the editor as the men. The test subjects also showed signs of motivation as well as creativity while exploring the system. An observation related to design aspects of the system was that the quality of the components that form the smartphone apps seems to be crucial if the system is expected to truly support strategies that women request.

    Supporting women's own perceptions of self-efficacy related to developing computer-based systems is challenging, still indications of acceptance and enthusiasm for the system were observed.

    From a design perspective, using strategies and self-efficacy sources as an evaluation framework in the development process shows potential for improved design, and not only when designing for female users, but for diverse groups of users, hopefully paving the way for a more diverse community of producers of computer-based products.

    Facilitating the access to digital learning resources: comparing different approaches to connecting learning object repositories2010Manuskript (preprint) (Annet vitenskapelig)

    The rapid growth of digital learning resources has brought forward a number of issues concerning availability, distribution and use. Altogether, the issues are a mix of interplaited technological and pedagogical considerations. Some of those issues, mainly related to repositories and the distribution of digital learning resources, are examined and described in this article. A particular focus is put on how resources can be described and indexed using metadata, and on how access to digital learning resources can be improved and facilitated through federation and/or harvesting of metadata in order to tie several repositories together to provide a service that offers one single access point. The study also examined how this single point of access can be moved closer to the user (i.e. to the environment where digital learning resources are used) through simple federation of the service, enabling access to the network of repositories from any virtual learning environment. The study was carried out by experiments connected to a real-life case. The study concludes in several suggestions for how access to digital learning resources can be enhanced, as well as in the identifications of a couple of new issues that need to be addressed by future research.

    Abstract [en]

    This dissertation investigates aesthetics of engagement in -interaction. Aesthetic refers to the aesthetic experience, based on a phenomenological and pragmatist understanding: dynamic and personal, appealing mutually to - and formed inseparably by - our bodily, emotional, as well as intellectual faculties. Engagement signifies this experience as forming a deeply involved relationship between people and an artefact in interaction. The theoretical background upon which this work is based, asserts that we perceive the world in terms of how we can act in it. Action, through the body, is how we make sense of the world around us. To be congruent with these foundations and the topic at hand means that the research program was investigated through a constructive design research process. The research program anchors and outlines the goal of this investigation: to contribute shareable knowledge of how to design for aesthetic engagement in interaction by leveraging a first-person -perspective. The findings of this research form two contributions to the overlapping fields of Human-Computer Interaction and (Interaction) Design Research.

    The main contribution is methodological and is concerned with generating knowledge through design. The methodological structure of this dissertation builds on a programmatic approach that centres on the first-person perspective of the designer, who learns from experience by reflecting on design action. Such an approach is fundamental to the design tradition, but its dependency on subjectivity is also a source of epistemological conflict since design, as mode of inquiry, matures and comes in contact with more established disciplines that have their own academic traditions. For design research, to develop its own intellectual culture, alternative and bidirectional relationships between theory and practice need to be further shaped, articulated, and debated in the field. This dissertation contributes to this discussion around designerly ways of knowing by exposing how skillful coping and intuition, through mechanisms of reflection-on-action, generate a multitude of perspectives on a complex design space. These perspectives reveal parts of the complexity of designing for aesthetic engagement, while leaving it intact. Exposing and consolidating the first-person (design) knowledge embedded in these perspectives allows this knowledge to be articulated as a shareable academic knowledge contribution.

    This shareable knowledge forms the second contribution of this dissertation. Reflections on the process and results of eight constructive design research projects describe a design space around aesthetic engagement. Individual reflections are consolidated into themes that describe how a design may elicit aesthetic engagement in interaction. These themes are experiential qualities: conceptual values that can be leveraged for a design to appeal to both mind and body in ways that are rich, open-ended and ambiguous. The findings propose strategies for interactions with digital technologies to open up the complexity of relations in the world between artefacts and people. Designing for aesthetics of engagement proposes ways to respect people’ skills in making sense of the complexity of the lived world. In respecting the uniqueness of their body and the subjectivity of their experiences, to design for aesthetic engagement is to support the expression of personal points of view in interaction. This points to ways in which designers can open up interactions with digital technologies to be more beautiful, respectful, and liveable, as it touches what makes us human: our personal being in the world.

    Design research is regarded to be a mode of inquiry particularly suited to engage with complex topics. In our work, we are interested in unpacking the complexity at the heart of an embodied aesthetic experience. In this article, through our digital and physical artefacts and a methodological reflection, we illustrate an ongoing design research project that a multi-disciplinary team of interaction designers, professional dancers, software developers, artists and 3D modelling experts are carrying out to develop insights on how to understand this complexity and how to use such insights as inspiration for interaction design-related projects. By embracing combinations of design, new technologies and simple visualisation tools, the project investigates the complex and hidden expressivity embedded in the skills of dancers in a programmatic design research approach. This investigation leads to insights on different levels. Firstly, cycles of formulation, realisation and reflection on design programs express parts of this complexity and this lets new research interests emerge. Secondly, as a body of work, reflecting on these cycles exposes how our “drifting” within this programmatic approach has started to unveil the complexities inherent in our research program. In this article we aim at contributing to the growing understanding of what designerly ways of knowing might be and how a practice aimed at expanding and contributing such knowledge unfolds.

    Tango is a form of partner dancing in which two bodies sense one another, and move accordingly, in a dynamic, physical dialogue that is known for its subtle complexities, beauty and intimate experience. In MoCap Tango, we explore how we can build on our skills as designers to highlight and unravel these embedded qualities and use them as inspiration in designing interactions. In this pictorial, we invite the reader to actively participate in the designerly engagement that turns objective data into subjective expressions; highlighting the qualities embedded in the movements of professional dancers.

    The advent of electronics and digital technologies in the last century has brought some significant changes in how we use and behave around doors. In this development, progress seems to imply a use of automation or shying away from physical interaction, and consequently a subtle yet potentially rich channel of information.

    Open Sesame aims to explore and reason around an opportunity and complementary perspective of leveraging digital technology to enrich the use of our haptic sense in future doors. The project poses an example situated in an office environment and builds on methods of hardware sketching to design a set of haptic door behaviours that reflect the state of a space. The resulting perspective attempts to make digital information about a room accessible for the user at a glance whilst reimagining the role of the door as a more active representative of the rooms it connects.

    Detta examensarbete har som syfte att inventera och jämföra utlokaliseringsbara kylmaskiner för Umeå Energis räkning. Umeå Energi levererar fjärrvärme och fjärrkyla till Umeå stad. Fjärrkylanätet som idag distribuerar fjärrkylan har byggts ut för att möta ett ökat framtida kylbehov. Det kommer trotts utbyggnaden finnas potentiella kunder som inte kan ansluta till fjärrkylanätet men som samtidigt redan är anslutna till fjärrvärmenätet. Nuvarande fjärrkyla produceras vid centraliserade anläggningar med fjärrvärme i högtemperaturdrivna absorptionskylmaskiner.

    Som konsekvens medför detta att temperaturen i fjärrvärmevattnet måste hållas tillräckligt hög för att kunna driva absorptionskylmaskinerna. Därigenom blir även temperaturen ute i fjärrvärmenätet förhållandevis hög. Detta möjliggör i sin tur drift av lågtemperaturdrivna kylmaskiner ute på platts hos de kunder som inte har möjlighet att ansluta till fjärrkylanätet. Under sommaren, då störst kylbehov föreligger, står en större avfallspanna för värmehållningen i fjärrvärmenätet. Umeå Energi får betalt för att elda avfall vilket innebär att driftskostnaderna för drivenergin till de egna värmedrivna kylmaskinerna blir mycket låg. I jämförelsen som gjorts har värmedrivna och icke värmedrivna kylalternativ undersökts genom ett livscykelkostnadsperspektiv utifrån likvärdiga förutsättningar.

    Investeringskostnad och driftdata har inventerats från olika leverantörer och genom kontakt med tekniskt insatta. Kostnaden för de övriga åtgärder som krävs för att få maskinerna driftklara, har beräknats utifrån givna produktdata, referenser till andra projekt samt resonemang. Jämförelsen har utgått ifrån att det enda som krävts för att få maskinerna i drift är elinstallation, framdragning av rör till befintlig maskinlokal, att fjärrvärme, råvatten och el etc. redan finns i byggnaden.

    Den lösning som visat sig mest kostnadseffektiv är frikyla, strömmande vatten från borrhål samt bergkyla där en bergvärmeanläggning redan finns. Detta för att installations och driftskostnaderna är låga. De värmedrivna kylmaskiner som undersökts är främst absorptionskyla och sorptiv kyla som påverkas mycket av bränslepriset under driftsperioden, lasten, samt kundens effektbehov. Stora komfortkylankunder är lönsamma vid självkostnadspris för fjärrvärmen eftersom deras last är som störst då drivvärmen är som billigast under sommarhalvåret. Absorptionsmaskiner är intressanta från och med ca 600 kW kyleffekt för dessa kunder. Sorptiv kyla kan vara intressant i hela sitt effektomfång men endast om behandlingen av ventilationsluften vägs in. Vid rörligt el och fjärrvärmepris är kompressorluftkyla svårslagen tack vare aggregatets flexibilitet.

    Om den som skall kyla har ett stort kylbehov och redan äger mark är snökylning ett möjligt alternativ. Erfarenheten av snökyla är dock begränsad eftersom endast ett fåtal sådana anläggningar byggts i Sverige. 

    I denna rapport ges en fingervisning om vilka kylalternativ som är intressanta för utlokaliserad kylproduktion ur Umeå Energis respektive kundens perspektiv.

    I hela världen har förändrade konsumtionsmönster och den tekniska utvecklingen lett till omställning för olika medier. Mängden av information har ökat och utbudet har globaliserats. Denna utveckling har därför medfört möjligheter och utmaningar för såväl nya aktörer som mer etablerade medier. Idag beskrivs sociala medier som en ny plattform för marknadsföring, där det finns obegränsat med olika kommunikationskanaler, där svårigheter uppstår i hur nyetablerade varumärken ska förhålla och anpassa sitt innehåll efter de nya kanalerna.

     

    Följande examensarbete redogör för hur ett mediaföretag anpassar sig till nya format och digitala plattformar i takt med den digitala utvecklingen. Examensarbetet har baserats på hur en webbredaktion på företaget SVT arbetar och hur framväxten av en den nya plattformen SVT recept har påverkat deras arbetssätt. Examensarbetet har formats och angripits utefter kvalitativ metod, med semistrukturerade intervjuer, deltagande observationer och litteraturstudier. Ämnet som avhandlas har redogjorts i form av en vetenskaplig teori och studiens utfall presenteras i form av ett resultat och en slutsats. Under dessa redovisas påföljden av de semistrukturerade intervjuerna och slutligen jämförs teori samt resultat, med en analys av studiens utfall. Kontentan av arbetet sammanfattas under kapitlet för slutsatser, där potentiella utvecklingsmöjligheter för SVT.se/recepts digitala plattformar presenteras.

     

    Studien har gett svar på hur ett företags marknadsföring och digitala strategier förändras utefter det föränderliga medielandskapet och hur dessa måste anpassa sig efter de regelverk som innefattas av public service. Vidare har studien gett konkreta råd för fortsatt vidareutveckling av SVT recepts digitala plattformar. Studien visar även på relevansen av att i ett tidigt skede deklarera en tydlig strategi, genomföra en konkurrens- och omvärldsanalys, samt få en tydlig bild av användarnas behov och beteendemönster på plattformarna.

    The emergence of smart phones has had a positive impact on society as the range of features and automation has allowed people to become more productive while they are on the move. On the contrary, the use of these devices has also become a distraction and hindrance, especially for pedestrians who use their phones whilst walking on the streets. This is reinforced by the fact that pedestrian injuries due to the use of mobile phones has now exceeded mobile phone related driver injuries. This paper describes an approach that measures the different levels of distraction encountered by pedestrians whilst they are walking. To distinguish between the distractions within the brain the proposed work analyses data collected from mobile sensors (accelerometers for movement, mobile EEG for electroencephalogram signals from the brain). The long-term motivation of the proposed work is to provide pedestrians with notifications as they approach potential hazards while they walk on the street conducting multiple tasks such as using a smart phone.

    Interest in Virtual Reality (VR) is growing fast. Tech companies are now starting to identify its most relevant application that will make it desireable. The use of VR in healthcare and mental health, has been proven through clinical research. Moreover, patient support programs extend treatment to people’s homes. An underlying opportunity was to envision a service for remote treatment of phobias with exposure therapy through VR. During the process, I conducted desk research, interviews, a workshop, prototyping and user testing. I collected evidence to lay out the service experience and communicate the key role of the therapist in the overall journey. My goal was to maximize the leaning outcome of exposure therapy and avoid the return of fear. Focusing on VR for the mobile phone, as the most accessible hardware for the broad audience, I created examples of exposure experience, that demonstrate the therapist’s presence and the user’s interactions with the environment.

    Abstract [en]

    This project explores the question of how to support women living with endometriosis in the transition into live with a chronic condition while maintaining the best possible quality of life.

    Design process was planned out and exercises in four steps - preparations and background research (outlining well-being perspective, desk research, research online via social media), design research (multiple surveys, interviews, reflections online, co-creation sessions, probing, interviews following probing with co-creation sessions, ideation sessions, analysis), explorations (creation of directions, analysis, initial concepts creation, feedback, synthesis, design proposal, feedback and evaluation sessions, design improvements) and final design proposal. Activities were aiming to repeatedly

    open up the scope of the project and then through the analysis of each phase narrow it down again following diamond shape.

    One important aspect of the process was to engage women living with endometriosis as well as their loved ones throughout the whole process and design together instead of designing for them. Of course, experts were consulted as well to make sure project is following standards of medical care, but the primary focus on the users was important since the product was shaped rather as a lifestyle change facilitator as well as data collection tool rather than a strictly medical solution.

    The outcome of the project is a flexible system VEA serving as a transition kit for women diagnosed with endometriosis, but also early detection screening tool and awareness platform for those who haven’t been diagnosed yet. Even though this might seem complicated I’ll try to explain why only this kind of a multifaceted approach can fully support women in their journey toward their best possible quality of life.

    VEA allows users to access Habit Nooks supporting them in introducing changes while guided by experts and supported by the community.

    Physical tracker allowing to track symptoms together with the Data Dashboard allow users to explore data patterns and make informed decisions. The system gives also an opportunity to get in touch with experts via calls or structured long-term programs.

    Beside the design proposal project was closed with a series of reflection touching on the bias in a medical field and how it might affect healthcare design, as well as designer’s experience of working on a project with a personal relevance.

    Abstract [en]

    Smartphones and applications are becoming more and more popular. Although, the user knowledge varies. Onboarding has been described in other previous studies as a tool for costumers to get a better understanding of applications. This thesis aims to develop guidelines for onboarding by investigating previous studies and by comparing different applications. By investigating to what extent onboarding is beneficial for an application, the question of if it is worth the time and effort for a company to develop an onboarding is discussed. A hi- fi onboarding prototype will be developed to be able to test the guidelines. Simplicity, knowledge of the user, smooth navigation and user satisfaction are a few things that were kept in mind from previous studies when developing the guidelines. To be able to develop guidelines, questions regarding mobile devices, application developing, user behaviour and manuals have also been studied.

    Interviews combined with observations allowed for an analysis of the guidelines by conducting an A/B test. One group of test subjects received an application with onboarding, and the other group received the same application without onboarding. The result of the A/B test showed that onboarding helped the user to find functions that could be considered difficult to locate. The test also showed that many people often skip onboarding, but people that complete the onboarding process gets a better understanding of the application faster. Guidelines for an efficient development of an onboarding are presented. In conclusion, onboarding is a tool that should be utilized if the developer aims to allow as many users as possible to understand the full potential of the application as fast as possible.

    Every day, we use technology. Online interactions leave traces and traces serves as portals into different aspects of our personalities, or how we want to be perceived by others. We are encouraged to record and express everything, from our most important moments to the least. However, the digital tools we use privilege only the moment, not the long term. They also tend to make everything feel equally important, thus giving us no incentive to go through our digital traces and decide what has lasting meaning and should be preserved and what we would like to be forgotten.The fabric of our lives is intertwined with our digital traces. What happens to them after the end of our lives? Just as our physical things live on past us, sometimes becoming a part of the lives of our family and friends this will surely be true for our data.How might we curate our digital legacy?

    Design-oriented research is an approach to HCI research that frames HCI as a design discipline. One approach to design research is that of critical making, which incorporates critical thinking and practical ‘making’ into the design process whereby ‘making’ is framed as another context of thinking. Cybertherapy is any computationally mediated psychotherapy intervention technique. Contextually, cybertherapy is situated within the field of Psychology and yet it is argued here the area is non-binary by nature and highly relevant to the field of HCI. This study demonstrates the validity of critical making as a design-oriented research approach to the field of cybertherapy design and beyond. Through the immersive demonstration of critical making for cybertherapy innovation design, the design research approach is evaluated and argued to be a beneficial stance towards such non-binary research and development.

    The area of mobile web is evolving rapidly but there are still no consensus regarding recommendations or best practices within the topic. Therefore this thesis is focused on interaction design within mobile web and compiles many dierent theories into guidelines for mobileweb design. The thesis may also be used as a foundation when deciding whether to developa native mobile application or a mobile adapted web application, or when choosing betweena separate mobile web application and a responsive web design.Components that are especially considered in this thesis are form elements and navigation menus. These are discussed relative to interaction on small touch screens such as smartphones and tablets. For example, text input elements can be optimized for the intended input format and one can take advantage of the device's native components for e.g. time and date input. A prototype of a responsive web application is also developed to further exemplify the theoretical theories. This is a exploratory study for the Swedish magazine Resume in collaboration with The Mobile Life and is focused on convert the original site into a responsive design, but still retain the overall Resume look and feel.

    How do you feel?: Designing for Emotional Self-Awareness and Perceived Anonymity in an Audience Response System2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 300 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Humans’ emotions have the ability to take over, which might end up with responses inappropriate to the situation. The solution to inappropriate responses is to have a better awareness. Great team-work, calm employees, and rational decision making are all qualities that derive benefit from emotional self-awareness. However, studies show that only 36 percent can identify their emotions as they happen. This paper takes on the opportunity to raise emotional self-awareness by designing a prototype that enables the users to reflect and anonymously share their emotion through an audience response system.

    Forty-eight participants, in various group sizes, did within-subjects tests. They started by writing down their answer to the question: How do you feel?. They later answered through the prototype. Whether or not the participants managed to be more specific through the prototype was measured, as well as their perceived anonymity. The results revealed that the prototype was useful in both helping the users to learn emotion definitions and further specify their emotion. In regards to the perceived anonymity, it showed that the design was favoring a larger group size around 20 participants.

    This chapter examines the concept of presence in a virtual world. It discusses recent findings of cognitive sciences research to offer a broader definition of presence. It suggests that presence is not the same as consciousness and discusses the three critical features of presence that cannot be explained by other cognitive processes. These include the ability of presence to allow the evolution of the self through the incorporation of tools and the role of presence in providing feedback to the self about the status of its activity. This chapter also explains that presence is an intuitive process.

    Restaurang Balder var under en lång tid missnöjd med deras dåvarande hemsida vilket lade till grunden för detta examensarbete. De hade ett stort intresse av att uppdatera layouten på deras hemsida och få en snyggare och mer användarvänlig webbsida för att presentera sin restaurang. En annan stor anledning för Restaurang Balder att uppdatera sin webbsida enligt mig var att göra den mer anpassad för smartphones. Då allt fler surfar i sina smartphones är det i min mening en absolut nödvändighet att ha en webbsida, oavsett bransch, som är smartphonekompatibel.

    Denna webbsida skapades i publiceringsverktyget Wordpress då detta är ett enkelt sätt att skapa snygga hemsidor med enorma layoutmöjligheter. En annan anledning till valet av Wordpress var att det är ett enkelt verktyg att använda för att underhålla sin webbsida. Då beställaren Reza besitter begränsad kunskap inom detta område ansåg jag att Wordpress var det bästa alternativet.

    Målet med projektet var att genom en snyggare, mer lättnavigerad och smartphonekompatibel webbsida skapa en större kundkrets till Restaurang Balder. Huruvida detta lyckade eller inte går det inte att skapa en uppfattning om ännu då webbsidan varit publicerad under en så pass kort tid, utan det får framtiden utvisa.

    Följande examensarbete gick ut på att skapa en ny hemsida åt restaurangen Tapas Bar & Deli. Beställaren Petter Thylin hade en stor önskan av att uppdatera layouten på deras dåvarande hemsida och att få en snyggare och mer användarvänlig webbsida för att presentera sin restaurang.

    Att på ett tydligt sätt presentera den mest relevanta informationen på sidan var det som ansågs som det mest vesäntliga enligt både beställaren och mig själv. Detta innefattade information om öppettider, adressuppgifter, kontaktuppgifter och de olika menyerna. Ytterligare krav från Petter var bland annat att behålla deras logotyp och även dess gröna färg. En annan viktig aspekt var att hemsidan även skulle fungera bra på mindre skärmar, till exempel smartphones och surfplattor.

    Webbsidan utvecklades lokalt i publiceringsverktyget WordPress med hjälp av mjukvaran WAMPserver, vilken tillåter den egna datorn att agera likt en webbserver. Detta innebar att webbsidan kunde färdigställas och godkännas av beställaren innan den publicerades på deras publika webbserver.

    WordPress fungerar idag som ett CMS-system och är därför ett väldigt lätt verktyg att underhålla för användaren. Då beställaren besitter begränsad kunskap inom detta område ansåg jag att WordPress var det bästa alternativet att använda mig av för att skapa deras nya hemsida. Dessutom fick jag i och med detta chansen att ytterligare utveckla mina kunskaper inom WordPress vilket var mitt mål med följande projekt.

    Samtliga krav från den kravspecifikation som jag och Petter tillsammans kom överens om innan detta projekt drog igång uppfylldes. Logotypen placerades i webbsidans header och större delen av hemsidan gick i olika nyanser av den gröna färg som önskades. Vidare presenterades relevant information på ett tydligt sätt i form av widgets på samtliga sidor. Genom en responsiv layout navigeras webbsidan framgångsrikt även på mindre skärmar.

    This report concerns a Master's thesis that has investigated how modern technologycould be used to enhance children's learning as well as a resulting application for Android tablets. A theory study was conducted regarding what isconsidered as good pedagogics and what is needed in order to motivate studentsto learn. This study stood as a foundation while conceptualizing the resultingapplication. The nal application is called Flisan at the supermarket and is an educational application with gaming components, directed to 7-year-old boys and girls. This degree project is done in collaboration with the interaction design agency Screen Interaction.

    Abstract [en]

    Agile software development has emerged as a response to the rapidly changing software environment and the need to anticipate late change of requirements. An important tool for many agile methods is a projec tmanagement application with a task board to keep track of the progress. However, it can be difficult to find a project management applicationthat is suited for a workplace where development teams use different methods.

    The aim of this master thesis was to develop a prototype of a project management application adapted to Codemill AB where development teams use different agile methods. To achieve this, the work process of development teams were investigated, as well as existing project management applications, and the most important functionality and features from a user available point of view were identified. Two design concepts were developed based on the users’ needs. Both concepts were tested and compared by end users in order to develop a refined prototype with the best parts from both concepts.

    The results indicate that the development process in a workplace can vary a lot between different development teams even though their methods are inspired by the same framework. A project management application for agile software development must be flexible enough to handle these differences without becoming too complex and difficult to use. None of the investigated applications achieved this balance. This work aimed to develop a prototype of an application that fills this gap, with the users' needs in focus. The findings in this thesis are based on Codemill’s needs, however, they could also be considered by others with similar needs.

    Peek transforms the outside into an imaginary playground for children, where interacting with the natural world takes the focus and the child’s simple acts and explorations can turn into their own stories. It is an expressive digital tool that invites children to explore the outside, capture audio and visual snippets, and build stories around them. It comes together with a physical book which triggers child’s imagination through guided explorations and allows the child to keep the stories they created.

    The result is a play experience designed for children aged between 5 and 8 years old.

    I denna studie redogörs för hur ett varumärke är direkt kopplad till sina värdegrunder. Rapporten besvarar hur värdegrunder i en organisation skapas av företagets personal i form av ord som kopplas till företagets varumärke. Metodiken i denna studie har pendlat mellan intervjuer och workshopar. Studiens resultat visar att företagets personal och praktikanter kom tillsammans till tre ord som processats till Academys värdegrunder. Dessa ord är: gemenskap, utveckling och skaparglädje.
